Generating unrepresented proportions of geological facies using Generative Adversarial Networks

In this work, we investigate the capacity of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) in interpolating and extrapolating facies proportions in a geological dataset. The new generated realizations with unrepresented (aka. missing) proportions are assumed to belong to the same original data distribution. Specifically, we design a conditional GANs model that can drive the generated facies toward new proportions not found in the training set. The presented study includes an investigation of various training settings and model architectures. In addition, we devised new conditioning routines for an improved generation of the missing samples. The presented numerical experiments on images of binary and multiple facies showed good geological consistency as well as strong correlation with the target conditions.

Cube root weak convergence of empirical estimators of a density level set

Given $n$ independent random vectors with common density $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, we study the weak convergence of three empirical-measure based estimators of the convex $λ$-level set $L_λ$ of $f$, namely the excess mass set, the minimum volume set and the maximum probability set, all selected from a class of convex sets $\mathcal{A}$ that contains $L_λ$. Since these set-valued estimators approach $L_λ$, even the formulation of their weak convergence is non-standard. We identify the joint limiting distribution of the symmetric difference of $L_λ$ and each of the three estimators, at rate $n^{-1/3}$. It turns out that the minimum volume set and the maximum probability set estimators are asymptotically indistinguishable, whereas the excess mass set estimator exhibits "richer" limit behavior. Arguments rely on the boundary local empirical process, its cylinder representation, dimension-free concentration around the boundary of $L_λ$, and the set-valued argmax of a drifted Wiener process.

Exact rate of convergence of the mean Wasserstein distance between the empirical and true Gaussian distribution

We study the Wasserstein distance $W_2$ for Gaussian samples. We establish the exact rate of convergence $\sqrt{\log\log n/n}$ of the expected value of the $W_2$ distance between the empirical and true $c.d.f.$'s for the normal distribution. We also show that the rate of weak convergence is unexpectedly $1/\sqrt{n}$ in the case of two correlated Gaussian samples.

Convergence of Multivariate Quantile Surfaces

We define the quantile set of order $α\in \left[ 1/2,1\right) $ associated to a law $P$ on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ to be the collection of its directional quantiles seen from an observer $O\in \mathbb{R}^{d}$. Under minimal assumptions these star-shaped sets are closed surfaces, continuous in $(O,α)$ and the collection of empirical quantile surfaces is uniformly consistent.\ Under mild assumptions -- no density or symmetry is required for $P$ -- our uniform central limit theorem reveals the correlations between quantile points and a non asymptotic Gaussian approximation provides joint confident enlarged quantile surfaces. Our main result is a dimension free rate $n^{-1/4} (\log n)^{1/2}(\log\log n) ^{1/4} $ of Bahadur-Kiefer embedding by the empirical process indexed by half-spaces. These limit theorems sharply generalize the univariate quantile convergences and fully characterize the joint behavior of Tukey half-spaces.
