Spectral projections of an anharmonic oscillator with complex polynomial potential

For a broad class of polynomial potentials $V$, with an important and instructive representative being $V(x) = x^{2a} + i x^b$, $x \in \mathbb R$, $a, b \in \mathbb N$, we show that the system of spectral projections $\{P_n\}_n$ of an anharmonic operator $L = - (\mathrm{d}/ \mathrm{d}x)^2 + V(x)$ does not generate a (Riesz) basis in $L^2(\mathbb R)$ if $a - 1 < b < 2a$. Moreover, for $σ= [b - (a - 1)]/(1 + a)$ and $γ> 0$ small enough, $\limsup_n \|P_n\|/ \exp(γn^σ) = \infty$. Proofs are based on two groups of results which are of great interest on their own: (a) relationship between behavior (growth) of the norms of projections $\|P_n\|$ and of the resolvent $\|(z - L)^{-1}\|$ outside of the spectrum $σ(L)$; (b) partial fraction decompositions of special meromorphic functions $1/F$ where $F(w) = \prod_{k=1}^\infty \left( 1 + \frac{w}{a_k} \right)$, $a_{k+1} \geq a_k>0$, $k \in \mathbb N$, and the generalization of the first resolvent identity.

The damped wave equation with singular damping

We analyze the spectral properties and peculiar behavior of solutions of a damped wave equation on a finite interval with a singular damping of the form $α/x$, $α>0$. We establish the exponential stability of the semigroup for all positive $α$, and determine conditions for the spectrum to consist of a finite number of eigenvalues. As a consequence, we fully characterize the set of initial conditions for which there is extinction of solutions in finite time. Finally, we propose two open problems related to extremal decay rates of solutions.

Spectra of definite type in waveguide models

We develop an abstract method to identify spectral points of definite type in the spectrum of the operator $T_1\otimes I_2 + I_1\otimes T_2$. The method is applicable in particular for non-self-adjoint waveguide type operators with symmetries. Using the remarkable properties of the spectral points of definite type, we obtain new results on realness of weakly coupled bound states and of low lying essential spectrum in the $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric waveguide. Moreover, we show that the pseudospectrum has a normal tame behavior near the low lying essential spectrum and exclude the accumulation of non-real eigenvalues to this part of the essential spectrum. The advantage of our approach is particularly visible when the resolvent of the unperturbed operator cannot be explicitly expressed and most of the mentioned spectral conclusions are extremely hard to prove using direct methods.

Analysis of the essential spectrum of singular matrix differential operators

A complete analysis of the essential spectrum of matrix-differential operators $\mathcal A$ of the form \begin{align} \begin{pmatrix} -\displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} p \displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} + q & -\displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} b^* \! + c^* \\[2mm] \hspace{6mm} b \displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} + c & \hspace{4mm} D \end{pmatrix} \quad \text{in } \ L^2((α, β)) \oplus \bigl(L^2((α, β))\bigr)^n \label{mo} \end{align} singular at $β\in\mathbb R\cup\{\infty\}$ is given; the coefficient functions $p$, $q$ are scalar real-valued with $p>0$, $b$, $c$ are vector-valued, and $D$ is Hermitian matrix-valued. The so-called "singular part of the essential spectrum" $σ_{\rm ess}^{\rm \,s}(\mathcal A)$ is investigated systematically. Our main results include an explicit description of $σ_{\rm ess}^{\rm \,s}(\mathcal A)$, criteria for its absence and presence; an analysis of its topological structure and of the essential spectral radius. Our key tools are: the asymptotics of the leading coefficient $π(\cdot,λ)=p-b^*(D-λ)^{-1}b$ of the first Schur complement of $\mathcal A$, a scalar differential operator but non-linear in $λ$; the Nevanlinna behaviour in $λ$ of certain limits $t\!\nearrow\!β$ of functions formed out of the coefficients in $\mathcal A$. The efficacy of our results is demonstrated by several applications; in particular, we prove a conjecture on the essential spectrum of some symmetric stellar equilibrium models.

Approximations of spectra of Schrödinger operators with complex potentials on $\mathbb{R}^d$

We study spectral approximations of Schrödinger operators $T=-Δ+Q$ with complex potentials on $Ω=\mathbb{R}^d$, or exterior domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, by domain truncation. Our weak assumptions cover wide classes of potentials $Q$ for which $T$ has discrete spectrum, of approximating domains $Ω_n$, and of boundary conditions on $\partial Ω_n$ such as mixed Dirichlet/Robin type. In particular, ${\rm Re} \, Q$ need not be bounded from below and $Q$ may be singular. We prove generalized norm resolvent convergence and spectral exactness, i.e. approximation of all eigenvalues of $T$ by those of the truncated operators $T_n$ without spectral pollution. Moreover, we estimate the eigenvalue convergence rate and prove convergence of pseudospectra. Numerical computations for several examples, such as complex harmonic and cubic oscillators for $d=1,2,3$, illustrate our results.

Bifurcation of nonlinear eigenvalues in problems with antilinear symmetry

Many physical systems can be described by nonlinear eigenvalues and bifurcation problems with a linear part that is non-selfadjoint e.g. due to the presence of loss and gain. The balance of these effects is reflected in an antilinear symmetry, like e.g. the PT-symmetry, of the problem. Under this condition we show that the nonlinear eigenvalues bifurcating from real linear eigenvalues remain real and the corresponding nonlinear eigenfunctions remain symmetric. The abstract results are applied in a number of physical models of Bose-Einstein condensation, nonlinear optics and superconductivity, and further numerical analysis is performed.

On extremal properties of Jacobian elliptic functions with complex modulus

A thorough analysis of values of the function $m\mapsto\mbox{sn}(K(m)u\mid m)$ for complex parameter $m$ and $u\in (0,1)$ is given. First, it is proved that the absolute value of this function never exceeds 1 if $m$ does not belong to the region in $\mathbb{C}$ determined by inequalities $|z-1|<1$ and $|z|>1$. The global maximum of the function under investigation is shown to be always located in this region. More precisely, it is proved that, if $u\leq1/2$, then the global maxim is located at $m=1$ with the value equal to $1$. While if $u>1/2$, then the global maximum is located in the interval $(1,2)$ and its value exceeds $1$. In addition, more subtle extremal properties are studied numerically. Finally, applications in a Laplace-type integral and spectral analysis of some complex Jacobi matrices are presented.

Hydrogen atom in space with a compactified extra dimension and potential defined by Gauss' law

We investigate the consequences of one extra spatial dimension for the stability and energy spectrum of the non-relativistic hydrogen atom with a potential defined by Gauss' law, i.e. proportional to $1/|x|^2$. The additional spatial dimension is considered to be either infinite or curled-up in a circle of radius $R$. In both cases, the energy spectrum is bounded from below for charges smaller than the same critical value and unbounded from below otherwise. As a consequence of compactification, negative energy eigenstates appear: if $R$ is smaller than a quarter of the Bohr radius, the corresponding Hamiltonian possesses an infinite number of bound states with minimal energy extending at least to the ground state of the hydrogen atom.

Remarks on the convergence of pseudospectra

We establish the convergence of pseudospectra in Hausdorff distance for closed operators acting in different Hilbert spaces and converging in the generalised norm resolvent sense. As an assumption, we exclude the case that the limiting operator has constant resolvent norm on an open set. We extend the class of operators for which it is known that the latter cannot happen by showing that if the resolvent norm is constant on an open set, then this constant is the global minimum. We present a number of examples exhibiting various resolvent norm behaviours and illustrating the applicability of this characterisation compared to known results.

On the metric operator for the imaginary cubic oscillator

We show that the eigenvectors of the PT-symmetric imaginary cubic oscillator are complete, but do not form a Riesz basis. This results in the existence of a bounded metric operator having intrinsic singularity reflected in the inevitable unboundedness of the inverse. Moreover, the existence of non-trivial pseudospectrum is observed. In other words, there is no quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian associated with it via bounded and boundedly invertible similarity transformations. These results open new directions in physical interpretation of PT-symmetric models with intrinsically singular metric, since their properties are essentially different with respect to self-adjoint Hamiltonians, for instance, due to spectral instabilities.

Krein Spaces in de Sitter Quantum Theories

Experimental evidences and theoretical motivations lead to consider the curved space-time relativity based on the de Sitter group $SO_0(1,4)$ or $Sp(2,2)$ as an appealing substitute to the flat space-time Poincare relativity. Quantum elementary systems are then associated to unitary irreducible representations of that simple Lie group. At the lowest limit of the discrete series lies a remarkable family of scalar representations involving Krein structures and related undecomposable representation cohomology which deserves to be thoroughly studied in view of quantization of the corresponding carrier fields. The purpose of this note is to present the mathematical material needed to examine the problem and to indicate possible extensions of an exemplary case, namely the so-called de Sitterian massless minimally coupled field, i.e. a scalar field in de Sitter space-time which does not couple to the Ricci curvature.

PT-symmetric models in curved manifolds

We consider the Laplace-Beltrami operator in tubular neighbourhoods of curves on two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, subject to non-Hermitian parity and time preserving boundary conditions. We are interested in the interplay between the geometry and spectrum. After introducing a suitable Hilbert space framework in the general situation, which enables us to realize the Laplace-Beltrami operator as an m-sectorial operator, we focus on solvable models defined on manifolds of constant curvature. In some situations, notably for non-Hermitian Robin-type boundary conditions, we are able to prove either the reality of the spectrum or the existence of complex conjugate pairs of eigenvalues, and establish similarity of the non-Hermitian m-sectorial operators to normal or self-adjoint operators. The study is illustrated by numerical computations.
