Higher-order QCD corrections to $H\to b\bar b$ from rational approximants

We use rational approximants to study missing higher orders in the massless scalar-current quark correlator. We predict the yet unknown six-loop coefficient of its imaginary part, related to $Γ(H\to b \bar b)$, to be $c_5=-6900\pm 1400$. With this result, the perturbative series becomes almost insensitive to renormalization scale variations and the intrinsic QCD truncation uncertainty is tiny. This confirms the expectation that higher-order loop computations for this quantity will not be required in the foreseeable future, as the uncertainty in $Γ(H\to b \bar b)$ will remain largely dominated by the Standard Model parameters.

A complete description of P- and S-wave contributions to the $B^0\to K^{+}π^{-}\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ decay

In this paper we present a detailed study of the four-body decay $B^0\to K^{+}π^{-}\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$, where tensions with the Standard Model predictions have been observed. Our analysis of the decay with P- and S-wave contributions to the $K^{+}π^{-}$ system develops a complete understanding of the symmetries of the distribution, in the case of massless and massive leptons. In both cases, the symmetries determine relations between the observables in the $B^0\to K^{+}π^{-}\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ decay distribution. This enables us to define the complete set of observables accessible to experiments, including several that have not previously been identified. The new observables arise when the decay rate is written differentially with respect to $m_{Kπ}$. We demonstrate that experiments will be able to fit this full decay distribution with currently available data sets and investigate the sensitivity to new physics scenarios given the experimental precision that is expected in the future. The symmetry relations provide a unique handle to explore the behaviour of S-wave observables by expressing them in terms of P-wave observables, therefore minimising the dependence on poorly-known S-wave form factors. Using this approach, we construct two theoretically clean S-wave observables and explore their sensitivity to new physics. By further exploiting the symmetry relations, we obtain the first bounds on the S-wave observables using two different methods and highlight how these relations may be used as cross-checks of the experimental methodology. We identify a zero-crossing point that would be at a common dilepton invariant mass for a subset of P- and S-wave observables, and explore the information on new physics and hadronic effects that this zero point can provide.

Padé approximants to $B\toπ\ellν_{\ell}$ and $B_{s}\to K\ellν_{\ell}$ and determination of $|V_{ub}|$

In light of the first observation of the semileptonic decay $B^{0}_{s}\to K^{-}μ^{+}ν_μ$ by the LHCb collaboration, we revisit the determination of the CKM parameter $|V_{ub}|$ from exclusive semileptonic $B$-meson decays. A controlled theoretical input on the Standard Model $B\toπ$ and $B_{s}\to K$ vector and scalar form factors from Lattice QCD in the large $q^{2}$ region, in combination with experimental measurements of the differential $B\toπ\ellν_{\ell}$ and $B^{0}_{s}\to K^{-}μ^{+}ν_μ$ branching ratio distributions, has allowed us determine $|V_{ub}|=3.86(11)\times10^{-3}$ and $|V_{ub}|=3.58(9)\times10^{-3}$ from the analyses of the individual decay channels, respectively, and $|V_{ub}|=3.68(5)\times10^{-3}$ from a simultaneous analysis of both decays, which is only a $1.4\%$ error and differs by $1.8σ$ with respect to the value from inclusive determinations $|V_{ub}|=4.25(12)^{+15}_{-14}(23)\times10^{-3}$. Our results are based on the use of Padé approximants to the participating form factors, highlight the importance of the decay $B_{s}\to Kμν_μ$ in complementing the traditional $B\toπ\ellν_{\ell}$ one in the exclusive determination of $|V_{ub}|$, and allow obtain, to the best of our knowledge, the first correlated results for the $B\toπ$ and $B_{s}\to K$ vector and scalar form factors. We hope that our study strengthens the case for precise measurements of the differential $B_{s}\to K\ellν_{\ell}$ decay rate with a finer resolution of the $q^{2}$ bins, as it would definitely allow achieving more conclusive results for $|V_{ub}|$.

Emerging patterns of New Physics with and without Lepton Flavour Universal contributions

We perform a model-independent global fit to $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ observables to confirm existing New Physics (NP) patterns (or scenarios) and to identify new ones emerging from the inclusion of the updated LHCb and Belle measurements of $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, respectively. Our analysis, updating Refs. [1,2] and including these new data, suggests the presence of right-handed couplings encoded in the Wilson coefficients ${\cal C}_{9'μ}$ and ${\cal C}_{10'μ}$. It also strengthens our earlier observation that a lepton flavour universality violating (LFUV) left-handed lepton coupling (${\cal C}_{9μ}^{\rm V}=-{\cal C}_{10μ}^{\rm V}$), often preferred from the model building point of view, accommodates the data better if lepton-flavour universal (LFU) NP is allowed, in particular in ${\cal C}_{9}^{\rm U}$. Furthermore, this scenario with LFU NP provides a simple and model-independent connection to the $b\to cτν$ anomalies, showing a preference of $\approx 7\,σ$ with respect to the SM. It may also explain why fits to the whole set of $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ data or to the subset of LFUV data exhibit stronger preferences for different NP scenarios. Finally, motivated by $Z^\prime$ models with vector-like quarks, we propose four new scenarios with LFU and LFUV NP contributions that give a very good fit to data. We provide also an addendum collecting our updated results after including the data for the $B\to K^*μμ$ angular distribution released in 2020 by the LHCb collaboration.

$η$ and $η'$ decays into lepton pairs

In this work, we calculate the branching ratios for the $η(η')\rightarrow\bar{\ell}\ell$ decays, where $\ell = e,μ$. These processes have tiny rates in the standard model due to spin flip, loop, and electromagnetic suppression, for what they could be sensitive to New Physics effects. In order to provide a reliable input for the Standard Model, we exploit the general analytical properties of the amplitude. For that purpose, we invoke the machinery of Canterbury approximants, which provides a systematic description of the underlying hadronic physics in a data-driven fashion. Given the current experimental discrepancies, we discuss in detail the role of the resonant region and comment on the reliability of $χ$PT calculations. Finally, we discuss the kind of new physics which we think would be relevant to account for them.

Charm quark mass determined from a pair of sum rules

In this paper, we present preliminary results of the determination of the charm quark mass $\hat{m}_c$ from QCD sum rules of moments of the vector current correlator calculated in perturbative QCD at ${\cal O} (\hat α_s^3)$. Self-consistency between two different sum rules allow to determine the continuum contribution to the moments without requiring experimental input, except for the charm resonances below the continuum threshold. The existing experimental data from the continuum region is used, then, to confront the theoretical determination and reassess the theoretic uncertainty.

On the uncertainty estimates of the $σ$-pole determination by Padé approximants

We discuss the determination of the $f_0(500)$ (or $σ$) resonance by analytic continuation through Padé approximants of the $ππ$-scattering amplitude from the physical region to the pole in the complex energy plane. The aim is to analyze the uncertainties of the method, having in view the fact that analytic continuation is an ill-posed problem in the sense of Hadamard. Using as input a class of admissible parameterizations of the scalar-isoscalar $ππ$ partial wave, which satisfy with great accuracy the same set of dispersive constraints, we find that the Roy-type integral representations lead to almost identical pole positions for all of them, while the predictions of the Padé approximants have a larger spread, being sensitive to features of the input parameterization that are not controlled by the dispersive constraints. Our conservative conclusion is that the $σ$-pole determination by Padé approximants is consistent with the prediction of Roy-type equations, but has an uncertainty almost a factor two larger.

Phenomenology of bivariate approximants: the pi0 to e+e- case and its impact on the electron and muon g-2

The current 3$σ$ discrepancy between experiment and Standard Model predictions for $π^0 \to e^+e^-$ is reconsidered using the Padé Theory for bivariate functions, the Canterbury approximants. This method provides a model-independent data-driven approximation to the decay as soon as experimental data for the doubly virtual $π^0$ transition form factor are available. It also implements the correct QCD constraints of the form factor both at low- and high-energies. We reassess the Standard Model result including, for the first time, a systematic error. Our result, BR$(π^0 \to e^+e^-)=6.23(5)\times 10^{-8}$, still represents a discrepancy larger than $2σ$, unsurmountable with our present knowledge of the Standard Model, and would claim New Physics if the experimental result is confirmed by a new measurement. Our method also provides the adequate tool to extract the doubly virtual form factor from experimental data in a straightforward manner. This measurement would further shrink our error and establish once and for all the New Physics nature of the discrepancy. In addition, we remark the challenge this discrepancy poses in the evaluation of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the $(g-2)_μ$, specially confronted with the foreseen accuracy of the forthcoming $(g-2)_μ$ experiments.

The $η^\prime$ transition form factor from space- and time-like experimental data

The $η^\prime$ transition form factor is reanalyzed in view of the recent BESIII first observation of the Dalitz decay $η^\prime\toγe^+e^-$ in both space- and time-like regions at low and intermediate energies using the Padé approximants method. The present analysis provides a suitable parameterization for reproducing the measured form factor in the whole energy region and allows to extract the corresponding low-energy parameters together with a prediction of its values at the origin, related to $Γ_{η^\prime\toγγ}$, and the asymptotic limit. The $η$-$η^\prime$ mixing is reassessed within a mixing scheme compatible with the large-$N_c$ chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order, with particular attention to the OZI-rule--violating parameters. The $J/ψ$, $Z\toη^{(\prime)}γ$ decays are also considered and predictions reported.

Updated pseudoscalar contributions to the hadronic light-by-light of the muon (g-2)

In this work, we present our recent results on a new and alternative data-driven determination for the hadronic light-by-light pseudoscalar-pole contribution to the muon $(g-2)$. Our approach is based on Canterbury approximants, a rational approach to describe the required transition form factors, which provides a systematic and model-independent framework beyond traditional large-$N_c$ approaches. As a result, we obtain a competitive determination with errors according to future $(g-2)$ experiments including, for the first time, a well-defined systematic uncertainty.

$η$-$η'$ mixing in large-$N_c$ chiral perturbation theory: discussion, phenomenology, and prospects

A systematic study of the $η$-$η'$ mixing in Large-$N_c$ chiral perturbation theory is presented with special emphasis on the role of the next-to-next-to-leading-order contributions in the combined momentum, quark-mass, and $1/N_c$ expansions. At this order, loop corrections as well as OZI-rule-violating pieces need to be included. Mixing angles as well as pseudoscalar decay constants are discussed within this framework. The results are compared with recent phenomenological approaches.

Ballpark prediction for the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon (g-2)_μ

Using the momentum dependence of the dressed quark mass and the well-known formulae for the mass dependent quark-loop contribution to the light-by-light scattering insertions, we compute the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The relevant momentum running in the quark loop is calculated from the $π^0$ exchange contribution to the light- by-light scattering. Special emphasis on the reconstruction of the pseudoscalar transition form factor is made, and the $π^0$ contribution to the hadronic light-by-light is, as well, updated.

Pseudoscalar decays into lepton pairs from rational approximants

The pseudoscalar decays into lepton pairs $P\rightarrow\overline{\ell}\ell$ are analyzed with the machinery of Canterbury approximants, an extension of Padé approximants to bivariate functions. This framework provides an ideal model-independent approach to implement all our knowledge of the pseudoscalar transition form factors driving these decays, can be used for data analysis, and allows to include experimental data and theoretical constraints in an easy way, and determine a systematic error. We find that previous theoretical estimates for these branching ratios have underestimated their theoretical uncertainties. From our updated results, the existing experimental discrepancies for $π^0\rightarrow e^+e^-$ and $η\rightarrow μ^+μ^-$ channels cannot be explained unless the doubly-virtual transition form factors behavior -not yet measured- are out of theoretical expectations, which is an interesting result both for anomalous magnetic moments of leptons, and for physics beyond the standard model.

Pseudoscalar transition form factors: $(g-2)$ of the muon, pseudoscalar decays into lepton pairs, and the $η-η'$ mixing

We present our model-independent and data-driven method to describe pseudoscalar meson transition form factors in the space- and (low-energy) time-like regions. The method is general and conforms a toolkit applicable to any other form factor, of one and two variables, with the potential to include both high- and low-energy QCD constraints altogether. The method makes use of analyticity and unitary properties of form factors, it is simple, systematic and can be improved upon by including new data. In the present discussion, the method is used to show the impact of experimental data for precision calculations in the low-energy sector of the Standard Model. In particular, due to its relevance for New Physics searches, we have considered the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (the pseudoscalar exchange contribution), the pseudoscalar decays into lepton pairs, and the determination of the mixing parameters of the $η$ and $η'$ system. For all of them we provide the most updated results in a data-driven manner.

Pseudoscalar-exchange contribution to $(g-2)_μ$ from rational approximants

We present our recent results on the hadronic light-by-light pseudoscalar-exchange contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon using rational approximants. Our work provides a generalization of Padé approximants to the bivariate case to describe the most general doubly-virtual transition form factor, which is required in the calculation. This method provides a powerful tool to systematically implement the known experimental data on transition form factors in the space-like region and low energies in a model-independent way. Given the lack of experimental data on the doubly-virtual transition form factor, we make use of the pseduoscalar decays into lepton pairs. We find an interesting and puzzling situation which calls for new experimental measurements to clarify the present state.

$η$ and $η'$ transition form factors from Padé approximants

We employ a systematic and model-independent method to extract, from space- and time-like data, the $η$ and $η'$ transition form factors (TFFs) obtaining the most precise determination for their low-energy parameters and discuss the $Γ_{η\rightarrowγγ}$ impact on them. Using TFF data alone, we also extract the $η-η'$ mixing parameters, which are compatible to those obtained from more sophisticated and input-demanding procedures.

Heavy neutrino decays at MiniBooNE

It has been proposed that a sterile neutrino ν_h with m_h \approx 50 MeV and a dominant decay mode (ν_h -> νγ) may be the origin of the experimental anomaly observed at LSND. We define a particular model that could also explain the MiniBooNE excess consistently with the data at other neutrino experiments (radiative muon capture at TRIUMF, T2K, or single photon at NOMAD). The key ingredients are (i) its long lifetime (τ_h\approx 3-7x10^{-9} s), which introduces a 1/E dependence with the event energy, and (ii) its Dirac nature, which implies a photon preferably emitted opposite to the beam direction and further reduces the event energy at MiniBooNE. We show that these neutrinos are mostly produced through electromagnetic interactions with nuclei, and that T2K observations force BR(ν_h -> ν_τγ) \le 0.01 \approx BR(ν_h -> ν_μγ). The scenario implies then the presence of a second sterile neutrino ν_{h'} which is lighter, longer lived and less mixed with the standard flavors than ν_h. Since such particle would be copiously produced in air showers through (ν_h -> ν_{h'}γ) decays, we comment on the possible contamination that its photon-mediated elastic interactions with matter could introduce in dark matter experiments.

Precise determination of resonance pole parameters through Padé approximants

In this work, we present a precise and model--independent method to extract resonance pole parameters from phase-shift scattering data. These parameters are defined from the associated poles in the second Riemann sheet, unfolded by the analytic continuation to the complex pole using Padé approximants. Precise theoretical parameterizations of pion-pion scattering phase shifts based on once-- and twice-- subtracted dispersion relations are used as input, whose functional form allows us to show the benefit and accuracy of the method. In particular, we extract from these parametrization the pole positions of the $f_0(500)$ at $\sqrt{s}=(453\pm 15) - i(297 \pm 15)$ MeV, the $ρ(770)$ at $\sqrt{s}=(761.4\pm 1.2)-i(71.8 \pm 1.0)$ MeV, and the pole of the $f_2(1270)$, located at $\sqrt{s}=(1267.3\pm 1.7)-i(95.0\pm 2.3)$ MeV. The couplings of the resonances to two pions are also determined with high precision, obtaining respectively, $3.8\pm 0.4$ GeV, $5.92\pm 0.15$ and $4.41\pm 0.23$ GeV$^{-1}$. Special attention is dedicated to the systematic treatment of the theoretical and statistical uncertainties, together with their comparison with previous determinations.

Pseudoscalar Transition Form Factors from Rational Approximants

The $π^0$, $η$, and $η^\prime$ transition form factors in the space-like region are analyzed at low and intermediate energies in a model-independent way through the use of rational approximants. Slope and curvature parameters as well as their values at infinity are extracted from experimental data. These results are suited for constraining hadronic models such as the ones used for the hadronic light-by-light scattering piece of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, and for the mixing parameters of the $η- η^\prime$ system.

Reply to "Comment on 'Systematics of radial and angular-momentum Regge trajectories of light non-strange qqbar-states' "

In his Comment, D. Bugg argues against our usage of the PDG collection of light non-strange states together with the half-width rule to analyze the linearity of radial and angular-moment Regge trajectories in the large-N_c limit. After taking into account his observations on our choice of data, the radial Regge trajectories are again analyzed. We still find that our conclusion on the lack of universality between radial- and angular-momentum Regge trajectories is valid.

Meson dominance of hadron form factors and large-Nc phenomenology

We discuss the pion and nucleon form factors and generalized form factors within the large-Nc approach in the space-like region. We estimate their theoretical uncertainties through the use of the half-width rule, amounting to taking the half-width of the resonances as the deviation of their mass parameters. The approach embodies the meson dominance of form factors and the high-energy constraints from perturbative QCD. We compare the results with the available experimental data and lattice simulations. The meson-dominance form factors are generally comparable to the available experimental data within the half-width-rule uncertainties. Our errors are comparable to the experimental uncertainties, but are smaller than lattice errors.

Systematics of radial and angular-momentum Regge trajectories of light non-strange q\bar{q}-states

We reanalyze the radial (n) and angular-momentum (J) Regge trajectories for all light-quark states with baryon number zero listed in the 2011 edition of the Particle Data Tables. The parameters of the trajectories are obtained with linear regression, with weight of each resonance inversely proportional to its half-width squared, $(Γ/2)^2$. That way we are side-stepping possible channel-dependent and model-dependent extractions of the resonance parameters and are able to undertake an error analysis. The method complies to the fact that the pole position of the resonance is typically shifted from channel-dependent extractions by $\simΓ/2$. This is also a feature of the large-$N_c$ limit of QCD, where the masses change by $ Γ/2$ when evolving from $N_c=3$ to $N_c=\infty$. Our value for the slope of the radial Regge trajectories is $a=1.35(4) GeV^2$. We discuss the fundamental issue whether the masses of the light-quark non-strange states fit into a universal pattern $M_{nJ}^2 = a(n+J) +b$, as suggested by Afonin, and also predicted by some holographic models. Our joint linear-regression analysis in the $(n,J,M^2)$ Regge planes indicates, at a statistically significant level of 4.5 standard deviations, that the slopes of the radial Regge trajectories are larger from the angular-momentum slopes. Thus no strict universality of slopes occurs in the light non-strange meson spectra.

Analytic Reconstruction of heavy-quark two-point functions at O(α_s^3)

Using a method previously developed, based on the Mellin-Barnes transform, we reconstruct the two-point correlators in the vector, axial, scalar and pseudoscalar channels from the Taylor expansion at q^2=0, the threshold expansion at q^2=4m^2 and the OPE at q^2\rightarrow -\infty, where m is the heavy quark mass. The reconstruction is analytic and systematic and is controlled by an error function which becomes smaller as more terms in those expansions are known.

Chiral dynamics predictions for eta' -> eta pi pi

The hadronic decays eta' -> eta pi pi are studied in the frameworks of large-Nc Chiral Perturbation Theory, at lowest and next-to-leading orders, and Resonance Chiral Theory in the leading 1/Nc approximation. Higher order effects such as pi-pi final state interactions are taken into account through a detailed unitarization procedure. The inclusion of finite-width effects in the case of RChT is also discussed. The Dalitz plot distribution and the differential branching ratio are computed in both approaches. The predicted Dalitz plot parameters obtained from the different treatments are compared with the most recent measured values. We find that the eta' -> eta pi pi branching ratios are easily understood, while the Dalitz plot parameters require the inclusion of pi-pi loops in order to achieve a reasonable agreement. Our final predictions agree with the experimental measurements. We hope our results to be of relevance for present and future experimental analyses of these decays.

Heavy-neutrino decays at neutrino telescopes

It has been recently proposed that a sterile neutrino ν_h of mass m_h=40--80 MeV, mixing |U_{μh}|^2=10^{-3}--10^{-2}, lifetime τ_h \lsim 10^{-9} s, and a dominant decay mode (ν_h \to ν_μγ) could be the origin of the experimental anomalies observed at LSND, KARMEN and MiniBooNE. Such a particle would be abundant inside air showers, as it can be produced in kaon decays (K -> ν_h μ, K_L -> ν_h πμ). We use the Z-moment method to evaluate its atmospheric flux and the frequency of its decays inside neutrino telescopes. We show that the ν_h would imply around 10^4 contained showers per year inside a 0.03 km^3 telescope like ANTARES or the DeepCore in IceCube. These events would have a characteristic energy and zenith-angle distribution (E_ν= 0.1--10 TeV and θ< 90^o), which results from a balance between the reach of the heavy neutrino (that disfavors low energies) and a sizeable production rate and decay probability. The standard background from contained neutrino events (ν_e N \to e X and neutral-current interactions of high inelasticity) is 100 times smaller. Therefore, although it may be challenging from an experimental point of view, a search at ANTARES and IceCube could confirm this heavy-neutrino possibility.

Hunting resonance poles with Rational Approximants

Based on the mathematically well defined Padé Theory, a theoretically safe new procedure for the extraction of the pole mass and width of resonances is proposed. In particular, thanks to the Montessus de Ballore's theorem we are able to unfold the Second Riemann sheet of an amplitude to search the position of the resonant pole in the complex plane. The method is systematic and provides a model-independent treatment of the prediction and the corresponding errors of the approximation. This letter partially covers the material presented by the author at the 15th International QCD Conference: QCD 10 (25th anniversary), Montpellier, France, 28 Jun - 3 Jul 2010 and at the Quark Confinement and the Hadron Spectrum IX, 30 August - 3 September 2010, Madrid, Spain.

Rational Approximations in Quantum Chromodynamics

We discuss some topics concerning rational approximations in Quantum Chromodynamics, especially those related with the mathematical theory of Padé Approximants. We focus on two kind of problems: the first one related with meromorphic functions (inspired by the Large-Nc limit in QCD) where we explore the Minimal Hadronic Approximation through the extraction of Low-Energy Constants and Condensate parameters of a two-point Green's function; and the second one related with meromorphic functions of Stieltjes-type where we present a critical analysis to a unitarization process applied to the Linear Sigma Model and also and application of the Padé Theory to the vacuum polarization function of a heavy quark. We also show the ability of these approximations when working with experimental data. Along these line, we make special emphasis on the reliability of that theory to control on systematic errors.

Chiral Dynamics Predictions for $η'\toηππ$

We study the decay $η'\toηππ$ in two different chiral invariant approaches: Large-$N_c$ Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and Large-$N_c$ Resonance Chiral Theory (RChT). We analyze the Dalitz plot and the invariant mass spectra. We also compare the relevance of the isoscalar and isovector channels in these approaches. While the predictions of Large-$N_c$ ChPT at next-to-leading order slightly disagree with the measured decay width (showing the need for final state interactions and higher order local contributions), a reasonable agreement is obtained for the case of RChT. Forthcoming experimental analyses at Bonn, Frascati, Jülich and Mainz will decide among the different frameworks.
