On Global Solutions of a Zakharov type System

We consider a class of wave-Schroedinger systems with a Zakharov-Schulman type coupling. This class of systems is indexed by a parameter gamma which measures the strength of the null form in the nonlinearity of the wave equation. The case gamma = 1 corresponds to the well-known Zakharov system, while the case gamma = -1 corresponds to the Yukawa system. Here we show that sufficiently smooth and localized Cauchy data lead to pointwise decaying global solutions which scatter, for any gamma in (0,1].

Regularity conditions in the CLT for linear eigenvalue statistics of Wigner matrices

We show that the variance of centred linear statistics of eigenvalues of GUE matrices remains bounded for large $n$ for some classes of test functions less regular than Lipschitz functions. This observation is suggested by the limiting form of the variance (which has previously been computed explicitly), but it does not seem to appear in the literature. We combine this fact with comparison techniques following Tao-Vu and Erdös, Yau, et al. and a Littlewood-Paley type decomposition to extend the central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics to functions in the Hölder class $C^{1/2+ε}$ in the case of matrices of Gaussian convolution type. We also give a variance bound which implies the CLT for test functions in the Sobolev space $H^{1+ε}$ and $C^{1-ε}$ for general Wigner matrices satisfying moment conditions. Previous results on the CLT impose the existence and continuity of at least one classical derivative.

Convergence of the eigenvalue density for beta-Laguerre ensembles on short scales

In this note, we prove that the normalized trace of the resolvent of the beta-Laguerre ensemble eigenvalues is close to the Stieltjes transform of the Marchenko-Pastur (MP) distribution with very high probability, for values of the imaginary part greater than m^{-1+ε}. As an immediate corollary, we obtain convergence of the one-point density to the MP law on short scales. The proof serves to illustrate some simplifications of the method introduced in our previous work to prove a local semi-circle law for Gaussian beta-ensembles.

Global wellposedness for a certain class of large initial data for the 3D Navier-Stokes Equations

In this article, we consider a special class of initial data to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations on the torus, in which there is a certain degree of orthogonality in the components of the initial data. We showed that, under such conditions, the Navier-Stokes equations are globally wellposed. We also showed that there exists large initial data, in the sense of the critical norm $B^{-1}_{\infty,\infty}$ that satisfies the conditions that we considered.

Local semicircle law in the bulk for Gaussian $β$-ensemble

We use the tridiagonal matrix representation to derive a local semicircle law for Gaussian beta ensembles at the optimal level of $n^{-1+δ}$ for any $δ> 0$. Using a resolvent expansion, we first derive a semicircle law at the intermediate level of $n^{-1/2+δ}$; then an induction argument allows us to reach the optimal level. This result was obtained in a different setting, using different methods, by Bourgade, Erdös, and Yau and in Bao and Su. Our approach is new and could be extended to other tridiagonal models.

The road to deterministic matrices with the restricted isometry property

The restricted isometry property (RIP) is a well-known matrix condition that provides state-of-the-art reconstruction guarantees for compressed sensing. While random matrices are known to satisfy this property with high probability, deterministic constructions have found less success. In this paper, we consider various techniques for demonstrating RIP deterministically, some popular and some novel, and we evaluate their performance. In evaluating some techniques, we apply random matrix theory and inadvertently find a simple alternative proof that certain random matrices are RIP. Later, we propose a particular class of matrices as candidates for being RIP, namely, equiangular tight frames (ETFs). Using the known correspondence between real ETFs and strongly regular graphs, we investigate certain combinatorial implications of a real ETF being RIP. Specifically, we give probabilistic intuition for a new bound on the clique number of Paley graphs of prime order, and we conjecture that the corresponding ETFs are RIP in a manner similar to random matrices.

Local semicircle law at the spectral edge for Gaussian $β$-ensembles

We study the local semicircle law for Gaussian $β$-ensembles at the edge of the spectrum. We prove that at the almost optimal level of $n^{-2/3+ε}$, the local semicircle law holds for all $β\geq 1$ at the edge. The proof of the main theorem relies on the calculation of the moments of the tridiagonal model of Gaussian $β$-ensembles up to the $p_n$-moment where $p_n = O(n^{2/3-ε})$. The result is the analogous to the result of Sinai and Soshnikov for Wigner matrices, but the combinatorics involved in the calculations are different.
