Almost-optimal bulk regularity conditions in the CLT for Wigner matrices

We consider linear spectral statistics of the form $\mathrm{tr} ( φ(H))$ for test functions $φ$ of low regularity and Wigner matrices $H$ with smooth entry distribution. We show that for functions $φ$ in the Sobolev space $H^{1/2+\varepsilon}$ or the space $C^{1/2+\varepsilon}$, that are supported within the spectral bulk of the semicircle distribution, these linear spectral statistics have asymptotic Gaussian fluctuations with the same variance as in the CLT for functions of higher regularity, for any $\varepsilon >0$.

An estimate for the radial chemical distance in $2d$ critical percolation clusters

We derive an estimate for the distance, measured in lattice spacings, inside two-dimensional critical percolation clusters from the origin to the boundary of the box of side length $2n$, conditioned on the existence of an open connection. The estimate we obtain is the radial analogue of the one found in the work of Damron, Hanson, and Sosoe. In the present case, however, there is no lowest crossing in the box to compare to, so we construct a path $γ$ from the origin to distance $n$ that consists of "three-arm" points, and whose volume can thus be estimated by $O(n^2π_3(n))$. Here, $π_3(n)$ is the "three-arm probability" that the origin is connected to distance $n$ by three arms, two open and one dual-closed. We then develop estimates for the existence of shortcuts around an edge $e$ in the box, conditional on $\{e\in γ\}$, to obtain a bound of the form $O(n^{2-δ}π_3(n))$ for some $δ>0$.

Equivalence of Polychromatic Arm Probabilities on the Square Lattice

We consider 2d critical Bernoulli percolation on the square lattice. We prove an approximate color-switching lemma comparing k-arm probabilities for different polychromatic color sequences. This result is well-known for site percolation on the triangular lattice in [Nolin08]. To handle the complications arising from the dual lattice, we introduce a shifting transformation to convert arms between the primal and dual lattices.

KPZ-type fluctuation exponents for interacting diffusions in equilibrium

We consider systems of $N$ diffusions in equilibrium interacting through a potential $V$. We study a "height function" which for the special choice $V(x) = \e^{-x}$, coincides with the partition function of a stationary semidiscrete polymer, also known as the (stationary) O'Connell-Yor polymer. For a general class of smooth convex potentials (generalizing the O'Connell-Yor case), we obtain the order of fluctuations of the height function by proving matching upper and lower bounds for the variance of order $N^{2/3}$, the expected scaling for models lying in the KPZ universality class. The models we study are not expected to be integrable and our methods are analytic and non-perturbative, making no use of explicit formulas or any results for the O'Connell-Yor polymer.

Central moments of the free energy of the O'Connell-Yor polymer

Seppäläinen and Valkó showed in \cite{SV} that for a suitable choice of parameters, the variance growth of the free energy of the stationary O'Connell-Yor polymer is governed by the exponent $2/3$, characteristic of models in the KPZ universality class. We develop exact formulas based on Gaussian integration by parts to relate the cumulants of the free energy, $\log Z_{n,t}^θ$, to expectations of products of quenched cumulants of the time of the first jump from the boundary into the system, $s_0$. We then use these formulas to obtain estimates for the $k$-th central moment of $\log Z_{n,t}^θ$ as well as the $k$-th annealed moment of $s_0$ for $k> 2$, with nearly optimal exponents $(1/3)k+ε$ and $(2/3)k+ε$, respectively.

Concentration for integrable directed polymer models

In this paper, we consider four integrable models of directed polymers for which the free energy is known to exhibit KPZ fluctuations. A common framework for the analysis of these models was introduced in our recent work on the O'Connell-Yor polymer. We derive estimates for the central moments of the partition function, of any order, on the near-optimal scale $N^{1/3+ε}$, using an iterative method. Among the innovations exploiting the invariant structure, we develop formulas for correlations between functions of the free energy and the boundary weights that replace the Gaussian integration by parts appearing in the analysis of the O'Connell-Yor case.

On the two-dimensional hyperbolic stochastic sine-Gordon equation

We study the two-dimensional stochastic sine-Gordon equation (SSG) in the hyperbolic setting. In particular, by introducing a suitable time-dependent renormalization for the relevant imaginary multiplicative Gaussian chaos, we prove local well-posedness of SSG for any value of a parameter $β^2 > 0$ in the nonlinearity. This exhibits sharp contrast with the parabolic case studied by Hairer and Shen (2016) and Chandra, Hairer, and Shen (2018), where the parameter is restricted to the subcritical range: $0 < β^2 < 8 π$. We also present a triviality result for the unrenormalized SSG.

On the chemical distance in critical percolation II

We continue our study of the chemical (graph) distance inside large critical percolation clusters in dimension two. We prove new estimates, which involve the three-arm probability, for the point-to-surface and point-to-point distances. We show that the point-to-point distance in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ between two points in the same critical percolation cluster has infinite second moment. We also give quantitative versions of our previous results comparing the length of the shortest crossing to that of the lowest crossing of a box.

On Global Solutions of a Zakharov type System

We consider a class of wave-Schroedinger systems with a Zakharov-Schulman type coupling. This class of systems is indexed by a parameter gamma which measures the strength of the null form in the nonlinearity of the wave equation. The case gamma = 1 corresponds to the well-known Zakharov system, while the case gamma = -1 corresponds to the Yukawa system. Here we show that sufficiently smooth and localized Cauchy data lead to pointwise decaying global solutions which scatter, for any gamma in (0,1].

On the chemical distance in critical percolation

We consider two-dimensional critical bond percolation. Conditioned on the existence of an open circuit in an annulus, we show that the ratio of the expected size of the shortest open circuit to the expected size of the innermost circuit tends to zero as the side length of the annulus tends to infinity, the aspect ratio remaining fixed. The same proof yields a similar result for the lowest open crossing of a rectangle. In this last case, we answer a question of Kesten and Zhang by showing in addition that the ratio of the length of the shortest crossing to the length of the lowest tends to zero in probability. This suggests that the chemical distance in critical percolation is given by an exponent strictly smaller than that of the lowest path.

On the Spectrum of Random Anti-symmetric and Tournament Matrices

We consider a discrete, non-Hermitian random matrix model, which can be expressed as a shift of a rank-one perturbation of an anti-symmetric matrix. We show that, asymptotically almost surely, the real parts of the eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian matrix around any fixed index remain interlaced with those of the anti-symmetric matrix. Along the way, we show that some tools recently developed to study the eigenvalue distributions of Hermitian matrices extend to the anti-symmetric setting.

Regularity conditions in the CLT for linear eigenvalue statistics of Wigner matrices

We show that the variance of centred linear statistics of eigenvalues of GUE matrices remains bounded for large $n$ for some classes of test functions less regular than Lipschitz functions. This observation is suggested by the limiting form of the variance (which has previously been computed explicitly), but it does not seem to appear in the literature. We combine this fact with comparison techniques following Tao-Vu and Erdös, Yau, et al. and a Littlewood-Paley type decomposition to extend the central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics to functions in the Hölder class $C^{1/2+ε}$ in the case of matrices of Gaussian convolution type. We also give a variance bound which implies the CLT for test functions in the Sobolev space $H^{1+ε}$ and $C^{1-ε}$ for general Wigner matrices satisfying moment conditions. Previous results on the CLT impose the existence and continuity of at least one classical derivative.

Subdiffusive concentration in first-passage percolation

We prove exponential concentration in i.i.d. first-passage percolation in $Z^d$ for all $d \geq 2$ and general edge-weights $(t_e)$. Precisely, under an exponential moment assumption $E e^{αt_e}< \infty$ for some $α>0$) on the edge-weight distribution, we prove the inequality $$ P(|T(0,x)-E T(0,x)| \geq λ\sqrt{\frac{|x|}{log |x|}}) \leq ce^{-c' λ}, |x|>1 $$ for the point-to-point passage time $T(0,x)$. Under a weaker assumption $E t_e^2(\log t_e)_+< \infty$ we show a corresponding inequality for the lower-tail of the distribution of $T(0,x)$. These results extend work of Benaim-Rossignol to general distributions.

preprint2014arXiv

Sublinear variance in first-passage percolation for general distributions

We prove that the variance of the passage time from the origin to a point x in first-passage percolation on Z^d is sublinear in the distance to x when d \geq 2, obeying the bound Cx/(log x), under minimal assumptions on the edge-weight distribution. The proof applies equally to absolutely continuous, discrete and singular continuous distributions and mixtures thereof, and requires only 2+log moments. The main result extends work of Benjamini-Kalai-Schramm and Benaim-Rossignol.

Convergence of the eigenvalue density for beta-Laguerre ensembles on short scales

In this note, we prove that the normalized trace of the resolvent of the beta-Laguerre ensemble eigenvalues is close to the Stieltjes transform of the Marchenko-Pastur (MP) distribution with very high probability, for values of the imaginary part greater than m^{-1+ε}. As an immediate corollary, we obtain convergence of the one-point density to the MP law on short scales. The proof serves to illustrate some simplifications of the method introduced in our previous work to prove a local semi-circle law for Gaussian beta-ensembles.

Local semicircle law in the bulk for Gaussian $β$-ensemble

We use the tridiagonal matrix representation to derive a local semicircle law for Gaussian beta ensembles at the optimal level of $n^{-1+δ}$ for any $δ> 0$. Using a resolvent expansion, we first derive a semicircle law at the intermediate level of $n^{-1/2+δ}$; then an induction argument allows us to reach the optimal level. This result was obtained in a different setting, using different methods, by Bourgade, Erdös, and Yau and in Bao and Su. Our approach is new and could be extended to other tridiagonal models.

Subdiffusivity of random walk on the 2D invasion percolation cluster

We derive "quenched" subdiffusive lower bounds for the exit time tau(n) from a box of size n for the simple random walk on the planar invasion percolation cluster. The first part of the paper is devoted to proving an almost sure analog of H. Kesten's subdiffusivity theorem for the random walk on the incipient infinite cluster and the invasion percolation cluster using ideas of M. Aizenman, A. Burchard and A. Pisztora. The proof combines lower bounds on the instrinsic distance in these graphs and general inequalities for reversible Markov chains. In the second part of the paper, we present a sharpening of Kesten's original argument, leading to an explicit almost sure lower bound for tau(n) in terms of percolation arm exponents. The methods give tau(n) \geq n^{2+epsilon_0 + kappa}, where epsilon_0>0 depends on the instrinsic distance and (assuming the exact value of the backbone exponent) kappa can be taken to be 17/384 on the hexagonal lattice.
