Reinterpretation of LHC Results for New Physics: Status and Recommendations after Run 2

We report on the status of efforts to improve the reinterpretation of searches and measurements at the LHC in terms of models for new physics, in the context of the LHC Reinterpretation Forum. We detail current experimental offerings in direct searches for new particles, measurements, technical implementations and Open Data, and provide a set of recommendations for further improving the presentation of LHC results in order to better enable reinterpretation in the future. We also provide a brief description of existing software reinterpretation frameworks and recent global analyses of new physics that make use of the current data.

From realistic 2HDM-II CPV benchmarks to the $H^\pm \toτν$ decay at the LHC

Phenomenological studies of a CP-violating two-Higgs-doublet Model with type-II Yukawa couplings are presented. In the light of recent LHC data, an update on the viable parameter space that survives both the experimental and theoretical constraints is provided. In addition, the scope of the LHC in exploring this model through the discovery of a charged Higgs boson that decays in the tauonic mode is analysed. For this, various production channels were investigated, with emphasis on the boson-associated channel $gg\to H_i\to H^\pm W^\mp$ and the fermion-associated channels $gb\to H^\pm t$ and $gg\to H^\pm bt$. For the latter, a signal-over-background analysis is performed.

Charged Higgs boson benchmarks in the CP-violating type-II 2HDM

We discuss prospects for discovering a charged Higgs boson in the CP-violating type-II two-Higgs-doublet Model. In the light of recent LHC data, we focus on the parameter space that survives experimental as well as the theoretical constraints on the model. Once the phenomenological scenario is set, we analyse the scope for the LHC to discover a charged Higgs in association with the lightest neutral Higgs and a charged vector boson.

Flavour Structure of R-violating Neutralino Decays at the LHC

We study signatures of R-parity violation in the production of supersymmetric particles at the LHC, and the subsequent decay of the lightest neutralino being the end product of a supersymmetric cascade decay. In doing so, we pay particular attention to the possible flavour structure of the operators, and how one may discriminate between different possibilities. A neutralino LSP would couple to all quarks and leptons and a comparative study of its decays provides an optimal channel for the simultaneous study of all 45 R-violating operators. By studying the expected signals from all these operators, we demonstrate the ability to understand whether more than one coupling dominates, and to map the experimental signatures to operator hierarchies that can then be compared against theoretical models of flavour. Detailed comparisons with backgrounds, including those from MSSM cascade decays are made, using the PYTHIA event simulator.

Natural Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

We show that the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) constrained by the two-loop-order requirement of cancellation of quadratic divergences is consistent with the existing experimental constraints. The model allows to ameliorate the little hierarchy problem by suppressing the quadratic corrections to scalar masses and lifting the mass of the lightest Higgs boson. A strong source of CP violation emerges from the scalar potential. The cutoff originating from the naturality arguments is shifted from 0.6 TeV in the Standard Model to >6 TeV in the 2HDM, depending on the mass of the lightest scalar.

Tuned Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

We consider a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) constrained by the condition that assures cancellation of quadratic divergences up to the leading two-loop order. Regions in the parameter space consistent with existing experimental constraints and with the cancellation condition are determined. The possibility for CP violation in the scalar potential is discussed and regions of \tan_β-M_{H^\pm} with substantial amount of CP violation are found. The model allows to ameliorate the little hierarchy problem by lifting the minimal scalar Higgs boson mass and by suppressing the quadratic corrections to scalar masses. The cutoff originating from the naturality arguments is therefore lifted from ~0.6 TeV in the Standard Model to ~2.5 TeV in the 2HDM, depending on the mass of the lightest scalar.

CP violation in top quark production at the LHC and Two-Higgs-Doublet Models

We discuss CP violation in top-antitop production at the LHC, induced by gluon fusion and final-state Higgs exchange. Results by Bernreuther and Brandenburg are confirmed and further reduced. The lepton energy asymmetry is studied in detail in explicit Two-Higgs-Doublet Models with near-maximal mixing in the neutral Higgs sector. Unless there is only one light Higgs particle, and unless (in Model II) tanbeta \lsim 1, the CP-violating effects are very small, possibly too small to be seen at the LHC.

Testing $CP$ in the Bjorken process

In a more general electroweak theory, there could be Higgs particles that are odd under $CP$, and also Higgs-like particles which are not eigenstates of $CP$. We discuss distributions which for the Bjorken process are sensitive to the $CP$ parity. Correlations among momenta of the initial electron and final-state fermions yield this kind of information. We discuss also observables which may demonstrate presence of $CP$ violation and identify a phase shift $δ$ which is a measure of the strength of $CP$ violation in the Higgs-vector-vector coupling, and which can be measured directly in the decay distribution. We present Monte Carlo data on the expected efficiency, and conclude that it is relatively easy to determine whether the produced particle is even or odd under $CP$. However, observation of any $CP$ violation would require a very large amount of data.

Signals of $CP$ violation in Higgs decay

We consider an extension of the Standard Model where some Higgs particle is not an eigenstate of $CP$, and discuss the possibility of extracting signals of the resulting $CP$ violation. In the case of Higgs decay to four fermions we study correlations among momenta of the final-state fermions. We discuss observables which may demonstrate presence of $CP$ violation and identify a phase shift $δ$, which is a measure of the strength of $CP$ violation in the Higgs-vector-vector coupling, and which can be measured directly in the decay distribution. In addition to these angular correlations, we consider correlations between energy differences. The former correlations include some recently reported results, whereas the latter ones appear to provide a much better probe for revealing $CP$ violation.

Angular and energy correlations in Higgs decay

We discuss how correlations among momenta of the decay products may yield information about the CP-parity of the Higgs particle. These are correlations of decay planes defined by the momenta of pairs of particles as well as correlations between energy differences. Our study includes finite-width effects. In the narrow-width approximation the angular correlations coincide with previously reported results. The correlations between energy differences turn out to be a much better probe for CP determination than the previously suggested angular correlations, especially for massive Higgs bosons.
