Measuring mechanical anisotropy of the cornea with Brillouin microscopy

Load-bearing tissues are typically fortified by networks of protein fibers, often with preferential orientations. This fiber structure imparts the tissues with direction-dependent mechanical properties optimized to support specific external loads. To accurately model and predict tissues' mechanical response, it is essential to characterize the anisotropy on a microstructural scale. Previously, it has been difficult to measure the mechanical properties of intact tissues noninvasively. Here, we use Brillouin optical microscopy to visualize and quantify the anisotropic mechanical properties of corneal tissues at different length scales. We derive the stiffness tensor for a lamellar network of collagen fibrils and use angle-resolved Brillouin measurements to determine the longitudinal stiffness coefficients (longitudinal moduli) describing the ex vivo porcine cornea as a transverse isotropic material. Lastly, we observe significant mechanical anisotropy of the human cornea in vivo, highlighting the potential for clinical applications of off-axis Brillouin microscopy.

High-extinction VIPA-based Brillouin spectroscopy of turbid biological media

Brillouin microscopy has recently emerged as powerful technique to characterize the mechanical properties of biological tissue, cell and biomaterials. However, the potential of Brillouin microscopy is currently limited to transparent samples, because Brillouin spectrometers do not have sufficient spectral extinction to reject the predominant non-Brillouin scattered light of turbid media. To overcome this issue, we developed a spectrometer composed of a two VIPA stages and a multi-pass Fabry-Perot interferometer. The Fabry-Perot etalon acts as an ultra-narrow band-pass filter for Brillouin light with high spectral extinction and low loss. We report background-free Brillouin spectra from Intralipid solutions and up to 100 microns deep within chicken muscle tissue.

On $L^p$-resolvent estimates and the density of eigenvalues for compact Riemannian manifolds

We address an interesting question raised by Dos Santos Ferreira, Kenig and Salo about regions ${\mathcal R}_g\subset {\mathbb C}$ for which there can be uniform $L^{\frac{2n}{n+2}}\to L^{\frac{2n}{n-2}}$ resolvent estimates for $Δ_g+ζ$, $ζ\in {\mathcal R}_g$, where $Δ_g$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator with metric $g$ on a given compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\ge3$. This is related to earlier work of Kenig, Ruiz and the third author for the Euclidean Laplacian, in which case the region is the entire complex plane minus any disc centered at the origin. Presently, we show that for the round metric on the sphere, $S^n$, the resolvent estimates in Ferreira et al, involving a much smaller region, are essentially optimal. We do this by establishing sharp bounds based on the distance from $ζ$ to the spectrum of $Δ_{S^n}$. In the other direction, we also show that the bounds in \cite{Kenig} can be sharpened logarithmically for manifolds with nonpositive curvature, and by powers in the case of the torus, ${\mathbb T}^n={\mathbb R}^n/{\mathbb Z}^n$, with the flat metric. The latter improves earlier bounds of Shen. Further improvements for the torus are obtained using recent techniques of the first author and his work with Guth based on the multilinear estimates of Bennett, Carbery and Tao. Our approach also allows us to give a natural necessary condition for favorable resolvent estimates that is based on a measurement of the density of the spectrum of $\sqrt{-Δ_g}$, and, moreover, a necessary and sufficient condition based on natural improved spectral projection estimates for shrinking intervals.

Uniform Sobolev Resolvent Estimates for the Laplace-Beltrami Operator on Compact Manifolds

In this paper we continue the study on the resolvent estimates of the Laplace-Beltrami operator $Δ_g$ on a compact manifolds $M$ with dimension $n\geq3$. On the Sobolev line $1/p-1/q=2/n$ we can prove that the resolvent $(Δ_g+ζ)^{-1}$ is uniformly bounded from $L^p$ to $L^q$ when $(p,q)$ are within the admissible range $p\leq2(n+1)/(n+3)$ and $q\geq2(n+1)/(n-1)$ and $ζ$ is outside a parabola opening to the right and a small disk centered at the origin. This naturally generalizes the previous results in \cite{Kenig} and \cite{bssy} which addressed only the special case when $p=2n/(n+2), q=2n/(n-2)$. Using the shrinking spectral estimates between $L^p$ and $L^q$ we also show that when $(p,q)$ are within the interior of the admissible range, one can obtain a logarithmic improvement over the parabolic region for resolvent estimates on manifolds equipped with Riemannian metric of non-positive sectional curvature, and a power improvement depending on the exponent $(p,q)$ for flat torus. The latter therefore partially improves Shen's work in \cite{Shen} on the $L^p\to L^2$ uniform resolvent estimates on the torus. Similar to the case as proved in \cite{bssy} when $(p,q)=(2n/(n+2),2n/(n-2))$, the parabolic region is also optimal over the round sphere $S^n$ when $(p,q)$ are now in the admissible range. However, we may ask if the admissible range is sharp in the sense that it is the only possible range on the Sobolev line for which a compact manifold can have uniform resolvent estimate for $ζ$ being ouside a parabola.

Physical properties of ReB2 under high pressure and effect of metallic bonding on its hardness

Using first-principles calculations, the elastic constants, thermodynamic property and structural phase transition of rhenium diboride under pressure are investigated by means of the pseudopotential plane-waves method, as well as the effect of metallic bond on its hardness. Eight candidate structures of known transition-metal compounds are chosen to probe for rhenium diboride ReB2. The calculated lattice parameters are consistent with the experimental and theoretical values. Based on the third order equation of states, the transition pressure Pt between the ReB2-ReB2 and MoB2-ReB2 phases is firstly determinate. Elastic constants, shear modulus, modulus, ratio and temperature are derived. The single-bonded feather remains in ReB2 compounds.Furthermore, a semiempirical method to evaluate the hardness of multicomponent crystals with partial metallic bond is presented. The effect of metallic bond on the hardness of ReB2 is searched and the hardness shows a gradual increase under compression, which is different from diamond.
