Banach lattices with upper $p$-estimates: Renorming and factorization

The notions of $p$-convexity and concavity are fundamental tools for studying Banach lattices, as they partition the class of Banach lattices into a scale of spaces with $L_p$-like properties. Upper and lower $p$-estimates provide a refinement of this scale, modeled by the Lorentz spaces $L_{p,\infty}$ and $L_{p,1}$, respectively. In this article, we provide a comprehensive treatment of Banach lattices with upper $p$-estimates. In particular, we show that many well-known theorems about $p$-convex Banach lattices have analogues in the upper $p$-estimate setting, including the ability to represent all such spaces inside of infinity sums of model spaces, to canonically factor the convex operators and identify their associated operator ideals, as well as to give a precise description of the free objects and push-outs. Proving these results is far from straightforward and will require the development of a variety of new tools that avoid convexification and concavification procedures. In fact, we will identify many fundamental differences between the theories of $p$-convexity and upper $p$-estimates, particularly with regards to isometric problems and renormings.

Banach lattices of positively homogeneous functions induced by a Banach space

Motivated by the construction of the free Banach lattice generated by a Banach space, we introduce and study several vector and Banach lattices of positively homogeneous functions defined on the dual of a Banach space $E$. The relations between these lattices allow us to give multiple characterizations of when the underlying Banach space $E$ is finite-dimensional and when it is reflexive. Furthermore, we show that lattice homomorphisms between free Banach lattices are always composition operators, and study how these operators behave on the scale of lattices of positively homogeneous functions.

Free complex Banach lattices

The construction of the free Banach lattice generated by a real Banach space is extended to the complex setting. It is shown that for every complex Banach space $E$ there is a complex Banach lattice $FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]$ containing a linear isometric copy of $E$ and satisfying the following universal property: for every complex Banach lattice $X_{\mathbb C}$, every operator $T:E\rightarrow X_{\mathbb C}$ admits a unique lattice homomorphic extension $\hat{T}:FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]\rightarrow X_{\mathbb C}$ with $\|\hat{T}\|=\|T\|$. The free complex Banach lattice $FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]$ is shown to have analogous properties to those of its real counterpart. However, examples of non-isomorphic complex Banach spaces $E$ and $F$ can be given so that $FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]$ and $FBL_{\mathbb C}[F]$ are lattice isometric. The spectral theory of induced lattice homomorphisms on $FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]$ is also explored.

Amalgamation and injectivity in Banach lattices

We study distinguished objects in the category $\mathcal{BL}$ of Banach lattices and lattice homomorphisms. The free Banach lattice construction introduced by de Pagter and Wickstead generates push-outs, and combining this with an old result of Kellerer on marginal measures, the amalgamation property of Banach lattices is established. This will be the key tool to prove that $L_1([0,1]^{\mathfrak{c}})$ is separably $\mathcal{BL}$-injective, as well as to give more abstract examples of Banach lattices of universal disposition for separable sublattices. Finally, an analysis of the ideals on $C(Δ,L_1)$, which is a separably universal Banach lattice as shown by Leung, Li, Oikhberg and Tursi, allows us to conclude that separably $\mathcal{BL}$-injective Banach lattices are necessarily non-separable.

Free Banach lattices under convexity conditions

We prove the existence of free objects in certain subcategories of Banach lattices, including $p$-convex Banach lattices, Banach lattices with upper $p$-estimates, and AM-spaces. From this we immediately deduce that projectively universal objects exist in each of these subcategories, extending results of Leung, Li, Oikhberg and Tursi (\emph{Israel J.\ Math.}~2019). In the $p$-con\-vex and AM-space cases, we are able to explicitly identify the norms of the free Banach lattices, and we conclude by investigating the structure of these norms in connection with nonlinear $p$-summing maps.

On the $A_\infty$ condition for elliptic operators in 1-sided NTA domains satisfying the capacity density condition

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided non-tangentially accessible domain (i.e., quantitatively open and path-connected) satisfiying the capacity density condition. Let $L_0 u=-\mathrm{div}(A_0 \nabla u)$, $Lu=-\mathrm{div}(A\nabla u)$ be two real uniformly elliptic operators in $Ω$, with $ω_{L_0}, ω_L$ the associated elliptic measures. We establish the equivalence between the following properties: (i) $ω_L \in A_{\infty}(ω_{L_0})$, (ii) $L$ is $L^p(ω_{L_0})$-solvable for some $p\in (1,\infty)$, (iii) bounded null solutions of $L$ satisfy Carleson measure estimates with respect to $ω_{L_0}$, (iv) the conical square function is controlled by the non-tangential maximal function in $L^q(ω_{L_0})$ for some (or for all) $q\in (0,\infty)$ for any null solution of $L$, and (v) $L$ is $\mathrm{BMO}(ω_{L_0})$-solvable. Moreover, in each of the properties (ii)-(v) it is enough to consider the class of solutions $u(X)=ω_L^X(S)$ with arbitrary Borel sets $S\subset\partialΩ$. Also, we characterize the absolute continuity of $ω_{L_0}$ with respect to $ω_L$ in terms of some qualitative local $L^2(ω_{L_0})$ estimates for the truncated conical square function for any bounded null solution of $L$. This is also equivalent to the finiteness $ω_{L_0}$-a.e. of the truncated conical square function for any bounded null solution of $L$. As applications, we show that $ω_{L_0}\llω_L$ if the disagreement of the coefficients satisfies some qualitative quadratic estimate in truncated cones for $ω_{L_0}$-a.e. vertex. Finally, when $L_0$ is either the transpose of $L$ or its symmetric part, we obtain the corresponding absolute continuity when the antisymmetric part of the coefficients has some controlled oscillation in truncated cones for $ω_{L_0}$-a.e. vertex.

Continuous valuations on the space of Lipschitz functions on the sphere

We study real-valued valuations on the space of Lipschitz functions over the Euclidean unit sphere $S^{n-1}$. After introducing an appropriate notion of convergence, we show that continuous valuations are bounded on sets which are bounded with respect to the Lipschitz norm. This fact, in combination with measure theoretical arguments, will yield an integral representation for continuous and rotation invariant valuations on the space of Lipschitz functions over the 1-dimensional sphere.

Invariant subspaces for positive operators on Banach spaces with unconditional basis

We prove that every lattice homomorphism acting on a Banach space $\mathcal{X}$ with the lattice structure given by an unconditional basis has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace. In fact, it has a non-trivial closed invariant ideal, which is no longer true for every positive operator on such a space. Motivated by these later examples, we characterize tridiagonal positive operators without non-trivial closed invariant ideals on $\mathcal{X}$ extending to this context a result of Grivaux on the existence of non-trivial closed invariant subspaces for tridiagonal operators.

Strictly singular non-compact operators between $L_p$ spaces

We study the structure of strictly singular non-compact operators between $L_p$ spaces. Answering a question raised in [Adv. Math. 316 (2017), 667-690], it is shown that there exist operators $T$, for which the set of points $(\frac1p,\frac1q)\in(0,1)\times (0,1)$ such that $T:L_p\rightarrow L_q$ is strictly singular but not compact contains a line segment in the triangle $\{(\frac1p,\frac1q):1<p<q<\infty\}$ of any positive slope. This will be achieved by means of Riesz potential operators between metric measure spaces with different Hausdorff dimension. The relation between compactness and strict singularity of regular operators defined on subspaces of $L_p$ is also explored.

A Jordan-like decomposition theorem for valuations on star bodies

We show that every radial continuous valuation $V:\mathcal S_0^n\rightarrow \mathbb R$ defined on the $n$-dimensional star bodies $\mathcal S_0^n$, and verifying $V(\{0\})=0$, can be decomposed as a sum $V=V^+-V^-$, where both $V^+$ and $V^-$ are positive radial continuous valuations on $\mathcal S_0^n$ with $V^+(\{0\})=V^-(\{0\})=0$. As an application, we show that radial continuous rotationally invariant valuations $V$ on $\mathcal S_0^n$ can be characterized as the applications on star bodies which can be written as $$V(K)=\int_{S^{n-1}}θ(ρ_K)dm,$$ where $θ:[0,\infty)\rightarrow \mathbb R$ is a continuous function, $ρ_K$ is the radial function associated to $K$ and $m$ is the Lebesgue measure on $S^{n-1}$. This completes recent work of the second named author, where an analogous result is proved for the case of {\em positive} radial continuous rotationally invariant valuations.

Almost band preservers

We study the stability of band preserving operators on Banach lattices. To this end the notion of $\varepsilon$-band preserving mapping is introduced. It is shown that, under quite general assumptions, a $\varepsilon$-band preserving operator is in fact a small perturbation of a band preserving one. However, a counterexample can be produced in some circumstances. Some results on automatic continuity of $\varepsilon$-band preserving maps are also obtained.

Geometric properties of infinite graphs and the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator

We study different geometric properties on infinite graphs, related to the weak-type boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal averaging operator. In particular, we analyze the connections between the doubling condition, having finite dilation and overlapping indices, uniformly bounded degree, the equidistant comparison property and the weak-type boundedness of the centered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator. Several non-trivial examples of infinite graphs are given to illustrate the differences among these properties.

Radial continuous valuations on star bodies and star sets

We show that a radial continuous valuation defined on the $n$-dimensional star bodies extends uniquely to a continuous valuation on the $n$-dimensional bounded star sets. Moreover, we provide an integral representation of every such valuation, in terms of the radial function, which is valid on the dense subset of the simple Borel star sets. We also show that every radial continuous valuation defined on the $n$-dimensional star bodies can be decomposed as a sum $V=V^+-V^-$, where both $V^+$ and $V^-$ are positive radial continuous valuations.

Banach lattice versions of strict singularity

We explore the relation between lattice versions of strict singularity for operators from a Banach lattice to a Banach space. In particular, we study when the class of disjointly strictly singular operators, those not invertible on the span of any disjoint sequence, coincides with that of lattice strictly singular operators, i.e. those not invertible on any (infinite dimensional) sublattice. New results are given which help to clarify the existing relation between these two classes.

Best constants for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on finite graphs

We study the behavior of averages for functions defined on finite graphs $G$, in terms of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator $M_G$. We explore the relationship between the geometry of a graph and its maximal operator and prove that $M_G$ completely determines $G$ (even though embedding properties for the graphs do not imply pointwise inequalities for the maximal operators). Optimal bounds for the $p$-(quasi)norm of a general graph $G$ in the range $0<p\le1$ are given, and it is shown that the complete graph $K_n$ and the star graph $S_n$ are the extremal graphs attaining, respectively, the lower and upper estimates. Finally, we study weak-type estimates and some connections with the dilation and overlapping indices of a graph.

Characterization of the restricted type spaces R(X)

We study functorial properties of the spaces $R(X)$, introduced in [Studia Math. 197 (2010), 69-79] as a central tool in the analysis of the Hardy operator minus the identity on decreasing functions. In particular, we provide conditions on a minimal Lorentz space $Λ_φ$ so that the equation $R(X)=Λ_φ$ has a solution within the category of rearrangement invariant (r.i.) spaces. Moreover, we show that if $R(X)=Λ_φ$, then we can always take $X$ to be the minimal r.i. Banach range space for the Hardy operator defined in $Λ_φ$.
