Continuous valuations on the space of Lipschitz functions on the sphere

We study real-valued valuations on the space of Lipschitz functions over the Euclidean unit sphere $S^{n-1}$. After introducing an appropriate notion of convergence, we show that continuous valuations are bounded on sets which are bounded with respect to the Lipschitz norm. This fact, in combination with measure theoretical arguments, will yield an integral representation for continuous and rotation invariant valuations on the space of Lipschitz functions over the 1-dimensional sphere.

Quantum one way vs. classical two way communication in XOR games

In this work we give an example of exponential separation between quantum and classical resources in the setting of XOR games assisted with communication. Specifically, we show an example of a XOR game for which $O(n)$ bits of two way classical communication are needed in order to achieve the same value as can be attained with $\log n$ qubits of one way communication. We also find a characterization for the value of a XOR game assisted with a limited amount of two way communication in terms of tensor norms of normed spaces.

A Jordan-like decomposition theorem for valuations on star bodies

We show that every radial continuous valuation $V:\mathcal S_0^n\rightarrow \mathbb R$ defined on the $n$-dimensional star bodies $\mathcal S_0^n$, and verifying $V(\{0\})=0$, can be decomposed as a sum $V=V^+-V^-$, where both $V^+$ and $V^-$ are positive radial continuous valuations on $\mathcal S_0^n$ with $V^+(\{0\})=V^-(\{0\})=0$. As an application, we show that radial continuous rotationally invariant valuations $V$ on $\mathcal S_0^n$ can be characterized as the applications on star bodies which can be written as $$V(K)=\int_{S^{n-1}}θ(ρ_K)dm,$$ where $θ:[0,\infty)\rightarrow \mathbb R$ is a continuous function, $ρ_K$ is the radial function associated to $K$ and $m$ is the Lebesgue measure on $S^{n-1}$. This completes recent work of the second named author, where an analogous result is proved for the case of {\em positive} radial continuous rotationally invariant valuations.

Euclidean distance between Haar orthogonal and gaussian matrices

In this work we study a version of the general question of how well a Haar distributed orthogonal matrix can be approximated by a random gaussian matrix. Here, we consider a gaussian random matrix $Y_n$ of order $n$ and apply to it the Gram-Schmidt orthonormalization procedure by columns to obtain a Haar distributed orthogonal matrix $U_n$. If $F_i^m$ denotes the vector formed by the first $m$-coordinates of the $i$th row of $Y_n-\sqrt{n}U_n$ and $α=\frac{m}{n}$, our main result shows that the euclidean norm of $F_i^m$ converges exponentially fast to $\sqrt{ \left(2-\frac{4}{3} \frac{(1-(1 -α)^{3/2})}α\right)m}$, up to negligible terms. To show the extent of this result, we use it to study the convergence of the supremum norm $ε_n(m)=\sup_{1\leq i \leq n, 1\leq j \leq m} |y_{i,j}- \sqrt{n}u_{i,j}|$ and we find a coupling that improves by a factor $\sqrt{2}$ the recently proved best known upper bound of $ε_n(m)$. Applications of our results to Quantum Information Theory are also explained.

Radial continuous rotation invariant valuations on star bodies

We characterize the positive radial continuous and rotation invariant valuations $V$ defined on the star bodies of $\mathbb R^n$ as the applications on star bodies which admit an integral representation with respect to the Lebesgue measure. That is, $$V(K)=\int_{S^{n-1}}θ(ρ_K)dm,$$ where $θ$ is a positive continuous function, $ρ_K$ is the radial function associated to $K$ and $m$ is the Lebesgue measure on $S^{n-1}$. As a corollary, we obtain that every such valuation can be uniformly approximated on bounded sets by a linear combination of dual quermassintegrals.

Radial continuous valuations on star bodies and star sets

We show that a radial continuous valuation defined on the $n$-dimensional star bodies extends uniquely to a continuous valuation on the $n$-dimensional bounded star sets. Moreover, we provide an integral representation of every such valuation, in terms of the radial function, which is valid on the dense subset of the simple Borel star sets. We also show that every radial continuous valuation defined on the $n$-dimensional star bodies can be decomposed as a sum $V=V^+-V^-$, where both $V^+$ and $V^-$ are positive radial continuous valuations.

Sampling quantum nonlocal correlations with high probability

It is well known that quantum correlations for bipartite dichotomic measurements are those of the form $γ=(\langle u_i,v_j\rangle)_{i,j=1}^n$, where the vectors $u_i$ and $v_j$ are in the unit ball of a real Hilbert space. In this work we study the probability of the nonlocal nature of these correlations as a function of $α=\frac{m}{n}$, where the previous vectors are sampled according to the Haar measure in the unit sphere of $\mathbb R^m$. In particular, we prove the existence of an $α_0>0$ such that if $α\leq α_0$, $γ$ is nonlocal with probability tending to $1$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$, while for $α> 2$, $γ$ is local with probability tending to $1$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$.

Testing microscopic discretization

What can we say about the spectra of a collection of microscopic variables when only their coarse-grained sums are experimentally accessible? In this paper, using the tools and methodology from the study of quantum nonlocality, we develop a mathematical theory of the macroscopic fluctuations generated by ensembles of independent microscopic discrete systems. We provide algorithms to decide which multivariate gaussian distributions can be approximated by sums of finitely-valued random vectors. We study non-trivial cases where the microscopic variables have an unbounded range, as well as asymptotic scenarios with infinitely many macroscopic variables. From a foundational point of view, our results imply that bipartite gaussian states of light cannot be understood as beams of independent d-dimensional particle pairs. It is also shown that the classical description of certain macroscopic optical experiments, as opposed to the quantum one, requires variables with infinite cardinality spectra.

Joint system quantum descriptions arising from local quantumness

Bipartite correlations generated by non-signalling physical systems that admit a finite-dimensional local quantum description cannot exceed the quantum limits, i.e., they can always be interpreted as distant measurements of a bipartite quantum state. Here we consider the effect of dropping the assumption of finite dimensionality. Remarkably, we find that the same result holds provided that we relax the tensor structure of space-like separated measurements to mere commutativity. We argue why an extension of this result to tensor representations seems unlikely.

A physical approach to Tsirelson's problem

Tsirelson's problem deals with how to model separate measurements in quantum mechanics. In addition to its theoretical importance, the resolution of Tsirelson's problem could have great consequences for device independent quantum key distribution and certified randomness. Unfortunately, understanding present literature on the subject requires a heavy mathematical background. In this paper, we introduce quansality, a new theoretical concept that allows to reinterpret Tsirelson's problem from a foundational point of view. Using quansality as a guide, we recover all known results on Tsirelson's problem in a clear and intuitive way.

Tripartite probability distributions and communication complexity

We show that every tripartite quantum correlation generated with a Schmidt state (in particular every correlation generated with the GHZ state) can be simulated with the sending of two bits of classical communication from Alice to Bob and Charlie plus the sending of two bits of classical communication from Bob to Charlie. This extends recent results which showed that the maximal violation of Bell inequalities attainable by these correlations is uniformly bounded. For simplicity, we state and prove the result for three parties, but the generalization to the case of $n$ parties follows easily. We also show that every $n$-partite probability distribution generated with local resources plus $c$-bits of local communication can violate a Bell inequality by at most a factor of $2^c$.
