Isolated factorizations and their applications in simplicial affine semigroups

We introduce the concept of isolated factorizations of an element of a commutative monoid and study its properties. We give several bounds for the number of isolated factorizations of simplicial affine semigroups and numerical semigroups. We also generalize αα-rectangular numerical semigroups to the context of simplicial affine semigroups and study their isolated factorizations. As a consequence of our results, we characterize those complete intersection simplicial affine semigroups with only one Betti minimal element in several ways. Moreover, we define Betti sorted and Betti divisible simplicial affine semigroups and characterize them in terms of gluings and their minimal presentations. Finally, we determine all the Betti divisible numerical semigroups, which turn out to be those numerical semigroups that are free for any arrangement of their minimal generators.

Cyclotomic exponent sequences of numerical semigroups

We study the cyclotomic exponent sequence of a numerical semigroup S,S, and we compute its values at the gaps of S,S, the elements of SS with unique representations in terms of minimal generators, and the Betti elements b∈Sb\in S for which the set {a∈Betti⁡(S):a≤Sb}\{a \in \operatorname{Betti}(S) : a \le_{S}b\} is totally ordered with respect to ≤S\le_S (we write a≤Sba \le_S b whenever a−b∈S,a - b \in S, with a,b∈Sa,b\in S). This allows us to characterize certain semigroup families, such as Betti-sorted or Betti-divisible numerical semigroups, as well as numerical semigroups with a unique Betti element, in terms of their cyclotomic exponent sequences. Our results also apply to cyclotomic numerical semigroups, which are numerical semigroups with a finitely supported cyclotomic exponent sequence. We show that cyclotomic numerical semigroups with certain cyclotomic exponent sequences are complete intersections, thereby making progress towards proving the conjecture of Ciolan, García-Sánchez and Moree (2016) stating that SS is cyclotomic if and only if it is a complete intersection.

The monoid of monotone functions on a poset and quasi-arithmetic multiplicities for uniform matroids

We describe the structure of the monoid of natural-valued monotone functions on an arbitrary poset. For this monoid we provide a presentation, a characterization of prime elements, and a description of its convex hull. We also study the associated monoid ring, proving that it is normal, and thus Cohen-Macaulay. We determine its Cohen-Macaulay type, characterize the Gorenstein property, and provide a Gröbner basis of the defining ideal. Then we apply these results to the monoid of quasi-arithmetic multiplicities on a uniform matroid. Finally we state some conjectures on the number of irreducibles for the monoid of multiplicities on an arbitrary matroid.

On the computation of factorization invariants for affine semigroups

We present several new algorithms for computing factorization invariant values over affine semigroups. In particular, we give (i) the first known algorithm to compute the delta set of any affine semigroup, (ii) an improved method of computing the tame degree of an affine semigroup, and (iii) a dynamic algorithm to compute catenary degrees of affine semigroup elements. Our algorithms rely on theoretical results from combinatorial commutative algebra involving Gröbner bases, Hilbert bases, and other standard techniques. Implementation in the computer algebra system GAP is discussed.

Bases of subalgebras of K[[x]] and K[x]

Let f_1,…,f_sf\_1,\ldots, f\_s be formal power series (respectively polynomials) in thevariable xx. We study the semigroup of orders of the formal series inthe algebra K[[f1,…,f_s]]⊆K[[x]]K[[ f1,\ldots, f\_s]] \subseteq K[[ x ]] (respectively the semigroup of degrees of polynomials inK[f_1,…,f_s]⊆K[x]K[f\_1,\ldots,f\_s]\subseteq K[x]). We give procedures to compute thesesemigroups and several applications.

Cyclotomic numerical semigroups

Given a numerical semigroup SS, we let PS(x)=(1−x)∑s∈Sxs\mathrm P_S(x)=(1-x)\sum_{s\in S}x^s be its semigroup polynomial. We study cyclotomic numerical semigroups; these are numerical semigroups SS such that PS(x)\mathrm P_S(x) has all its roots in the unit disc. We conjecture that SS is a cyclotomic numerical semigroup if and only if SS is a complete intersection numerical semigroup and present some evidence for it. Aside from the notion of cyclotomic numerical semigroup we introduce the notion of cyclotomic exponents and polynomially related numerical semigroups. We derive some properties and give some applications of these new concepts.

On curves with one place at infinity

Let ff be a plane curve. We give a procedure based on Abhyankar's approximate roots to detect if it has a single place at infinity, and if so construct its associated δδ-sequence, and consequently its value semigroup. Also for fixed genus (equivalently Frobenius number) we construct all δδ-sequences generating numerical semigroups with this given genus. For a δδ-sequence we present a procedure to construct all curves having this associated sequence. We also study the embeddings of such curves in the plane. In particular, we prove that polynomial curves might not have a unique embedding.

Constructing the set of complete intersection numerical semigroups with a given Frobenius number

Delorme suggested that the set of all complete intersection numerical semigroups can be computed recursively. We have implemented this algorithm, and particularized it to several subfamilies of this class of numerical semigroups: free and telescopic numerical semigroups, and numerical semigroups associated to an irreducible plane curve singularity. The recursive nature of this procedure allows us to give bounds for the embedding dimension and for the minimal generators of a semigroup in any of these families.

Frobenius vectors, Hilbert series and gluings

Let S1S_1 and S2S_2 be two affine semigroups and let SS be the gluing of S1S_1 and S2S_2. Several invariants of SS are then related to those of S1S_1 and S2S_2; we review some of the most important properties preserved under gluings. The aim of this paper is to prove that this is the case for the Frobenius vector and the Hilbert series. Applications to complete intersection affine semigroups are also given.

Factorization invariants in half-factorial affine semigroups

Let NA\mathbb{N} \mathcal{A} be the monoid generated by A=a1,...,an⊆Zd.\mathcal{A} = {\mathbf{a}_1, ..., \mathbf{a}_n} \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^d. We introduce the homogeneous catenary degree of NA\mathbb{N} \mathcal{A} as the smallest N∈NN \in \mathbb N with the following property: for each a∈NA\mathbf{a} \in \mathbb{N} \mathcal{A} and any two factorizations u,v\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{v} of a\mathbf{a}, there exists factorizations u=w1,...,wt=v\mathbf{u} = \mathbf{w}_1, ..., \mathbf{w}_t = \mathbf{v} of a\mathbf{a} such that, for every k,d(wk,wk+1)≤N,k, \mathrm{d}(\mathbf{w}_k, \mathbf{w}_{k+1}) \leq N, where d\mathrm{d} is the usual distance between factorizations, and the length of wk,∣wk∣,\mathbf{w}_k, |\mathbf{w}_k|, is less than or equal to max⁡∣u∣,∣v∣.\max{|\mathbf{u}|, |\mathbf{v}|}. We prove that the homogeneous catenary degree of NA\mathbb{N} \mathcal{A} improves the monotone catenary degree as upper bound for the ordinary catenary degree, and we show that it can be effectively computed. We also prove that for half-factorial monoids, the tame degree and the ωω-primality coincide, and that all possible catenary degrees of the elements of an affine semigroup of this kind occur as the catenary degree of one of its Betti elements.

Nonhomogeneous patterns on numerical semigroups

Patterns on numerical semigroups are multivariate linear polynomials, and they are said to be admissible if there exists a numerical semigroup such that evaluated at any nonincreasing sequence of elements of the semigroup gives integers belonging to the semigroup. In a first approach, only homogeneous patterns where analized. In this contribution we study conditions for an eventually non-homogeneous pattern to be admissible, and particularize this study to the case the independent term of the pattern is a multiple of the multiplicity of the semigroup. Moreover, for the so called strongly admissible patterns, the set of numerical semigroups admitting these patterns with fixed multiplicity mm form an mm-variety, which allows us to represent this set in a tree and to describe minimal sets of generators of the semigroups in the variety with respect to the pattern. Furthermore, we characterize strongly admissible patterns having a finite associated tree.
