An orthogonality relation in complex normed spaces based on norm derivatives

Let $X$ be a complex normed space. Based on the right norm derivative $ρ_{_{+}}$, we define a mapping $ρ_{_{\infty}}$ by \begin{equation*} ρ_{_{\infty}}(x,y) = \frac1π\int_0^{2π}e^{iθ}ρ_{_{+}}(x,e^{iθ}y)dθ\quad(x,y\in X). \end{equation*} The mapping $ρ_{_{\infty}}$ has a good response to some geometrical properties of $X$. For instance, we prove that $ρ_{_{\infty}}(x,y)=ρ_{_{\infty}}(y,x)$ for all $x, y \in X$ if and only if $X$ is an inner product space. In addition, we define a $ρ_{_{\infty}}$-orthogonality in $X$ and show that a linear mapping preserving $ρ_{_{\infty}}$-orthogonality has to be a scalar multiple of an isometry. A number of challenging problems in the geometry of complex normed spaces are also discussed.

On non-linear mappings preserving the semi-inner product

We say that a smooth normed space $X$ has a property (SL), if every mapping $f:X \to X$ preserving the semi-inner product on $X$ is linear. It is well known that every Hilbert space has the property (SL) and the same is true for every finite-dimensional smooth normed space. In this paper, we establish several new results concerning the property (SL). We give a simple example of a smooth and strictly convex Banach space which is isomorphic to the space $\ell_p$, but without the property (SL). Moreover, we provide a characterization of the property (SL) in the class of reflexive smooth Banach spaces in terms of subspaces of quotient spaces. As a consequence, we prove that the space $\ell_p$ have the property (SL) for every $1 < p < \infty$. Finally, using a variant of the Gowers-Maurey space, we construct an infinite-dimensional uniformly smooth Banach space $X$ such that every smooth Banach space isomorphic to $X$ has the property (SL).

Pressure effects on the electronic structure, phonons, and superconductivity of noncentrosymmetric ThCoC2

The electronic structure, phonons, electron-phonon coupling, and superconductivity are theoretically studied in noncentrosymmetric superconductor ThCoC$_2$ as a function of pressure, in the pressure range 0 - 20 GPa. We found that the electronic band splitting induced by the spin-orbit coupling is enhanced under pressure. In spite of the overall stiffening of the crystal lattice, the electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$ increases with pressure, from 0.583 at 0 GPa to 0.652 at 20 GPa. If the isotropic Eliashberg electron-phonon coupling theory is used to simulate the effect on the critical temperature $T_c$, such an increase in $λ$ results in a substantial increase of $T_c$ from 2.5~K at 0 GPa to 4~K at 20 GPa. This shows that examining the effect of pressure offers a chance to resolve the pairing mechanism in ThCoC$_2$.

Applications of amenable semigroups in operator theory

The paper deals with continuous homomorphisms $S \ni s \mapsto T_s \in L(E)$ of amenable semigroups $S$ into the algebra $L(E)$ of all bounded linear operators on a Banach space $E$. For a closed linear subspace $F$ of $E$, sufficient conditions are given under which there exists a projection $P \in L(E)$ onto $F$ that commutes with all $T_s$. And when $E$ is a Hilbert space, sufficient conditions are given for the existence of an invertible operator $R \in L(E)$ such that all $R T_s R^{-1}$ are isometries. Also certain results on extending intertwining operators, renorming as well as on operators on hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces are offered.

Transition from positive to negative magnetoresistance induced by a constriction in semiconductor nanowire

We have studied the magnetotransport through an indium antimonide (InSb) nanowire grown in [111] direction, with a geometric constriction and in an external magnetic field applied along the nanowire axis. We have found that the magnetoresistance is negative for the narrow constriction, nearly zero for the constriction of some intermediate radius, and takes on positive values for the constriction with the radius approaching that of the nanowire. For all magnitudes of the magnetic field, the radius of constriction at which the change of the magnetoresistance sign takes place has been found to be almost the same as long as other geometric parameters of the nanowire are fixed. The sign reversing of the magnetoresistance is explained as a combined effect of two factors: the influence of the constriction on the transverse states and the spin Zeeman effect.

Fulde-Ferrell state induced purely by the orbital effect in a superconducting nanowire

We demonstrate that the Fulde-Ferrell (FF) phase can be induced uniquely by the orbital effect in a cylindrical metallic nanowire. In the external magnetic field the two-fold degeneracy with respect to the orbital quantum number $m$ is lifted what leads to a Fermi wave vector mismatch between the subbands with opposite orbital momenta in the paired state. This mismatch can be compensated by the nonzero total momentum of the Cooper pairs created by electrons from split subbands what results in the formation of the FF phase. With increasing magnetic field a series of FF stability regions appear in between which the standard BCS superconducting phase is stable.
