Foundations of local iterated function systems

In this paper we present a systematic study of continuous local iterated function systems. We prove local iterated function systems admit compact attractors and, under a contractivity assumption, construct their code space and present an extended shift that describes admissible compositions. In particular, the possible combinatorial structure of a local iterated function system is in bijection with the space of invariant subsets of the full shift. Nevertheless, these objects reveal a degree of unexpectedness relative to the classical framework, as we build examples of local iterated function systems which are not modeled by subshifts of finite type and give rise to non self-similar attractors. We also prove that all attractors of graph-directed IFSs are obtained from local IFSs on an enriched compact metric space. We provide several classes of examples illustrating the scope of our results, emphasizing both their contrasts and connections with the classical theory of iterated function systems.

A convex analysis approach to entropy functions, variational principles and equilibrium states

The first aims of this work are to endorse the advent of finitely additive set functions as equilibrium states and the possibility to replace the metric entropy by an upper semi-continuous map associated to a general variational principle. More precisely, using methods from Convex Analysis, we construct for each generalized convex pressure function an upper semi-continuous entropy-like map (which, in the context of continuous transformations acting on a compact metric space and the topological pressure, turns out to be the upper semi-continuous envelope of the Kolmogorov-Sinai metric entropy), then establish a new abstract variational principle and prove that equilibrium states, possibly finitely additive, always exist. This conceptual approach provides a new insight on dynamical systems without a measure with maximal entropy, prompts the study of finitely additive ground states for non-uniformly hyperbolic maps and grants the existence of finitely additive Lyapunov equilibrium states for singular value potentials generated by linear cocycles over continuous maps. We further investigate several applications, including a new thermodynamic formalism for systems driven by finitely generated semigroup or countable sofic group actions. On the final pages of the manuscript we provide a list of open problems in a wide range of topics suggested by our main results.

Bayes posterior convergence for loss functions via almost additive Thermodynamic Formalism

Statistical inference can be seen as information processing involving input information and output information that updates belief about some unknown parameters. We consider the Bayesian framework for making inferences about dynamical systems from ergodic observations, where the Bayesian procedure is based on the Gibbs posterior inference, a decision process generalization of standard Bayesian inference where the likelihood is replaced by the exponential of a loss function. In the case of direct observation and almost-additive loss functions, we prove an exponential convergence of the a posteriori measures a limit measure. Our estimates on the Bayes posterior convergence for direct observation are related and extend those in a recent paper by K. McGoff, S. Mukherjee and A. Nobel. Our approach makes use of non-additive thermodynamic formalism and large deviation properties instead of joinings.

Convergence to a Lévy process in the Skorohod $M_1$ and $M_2$ topologies for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems, including billiards with cusps

We prove convergence to a Levy process for a class of dispersing billiards with cusps. For such examples, convergence to a stable law was proved by Jung & Zhang. For the corresponding functional limit law, convergence is not possible in the usual Skorohod J_1 topology. Our main results yield elementary geometric conditions for convergence (i) in M_1, (ii) in M_2 but not M_1. In general, we show for a large class of nonuniformly hyperbolic systems how to deduce functional limit laws once convergence to the corresponding stable law is known.

A note on statistical properties for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems with slow contraction and expansion

We provide a systematic approach for deducing statistical limit laws via martingale-coboundary decomposition, for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems with slowly contracting and expanding directions. In particular, if the associated return time function is square-integrable, then we obtain the central limit theorem, the weak invariance principle, and an iterated version of the weak invariance principle.

Differentiability of thermodynamical quantities in non-uniformly expanding dynamics

In this paper we study the ergodic theory of a robust non-uniformly expanding maps where no Markov assumption is required. We prove that the topological pressure is differentiable as a function of the dynamics and analytic with respect to the potential. Moreover we not only prove the continuity of the equilibrium states and their metric entropy as well as the differentiability of the maximal entropy measure and extremal Lyapunov exponents with respect to the dynamics. We also prove a local large deviations principle and central limit theorem and show that the rate function, mean and variance vary continuously with respect to observables, potentials and dynamics. Finally, we show that the correlation function associated to the maximal entropy measure is differentiable with respect to the dynamics and it is $C^1$-convergent to zero. In addition, precise formulas for the derivatives of thermodynamical quantities are given.

Quantitative recurrence for free semigroup actions

We consider finitely generated free semigroup actions on a compact metric space and obtain quantitative information on Poincaré recurrence, average first return time and hitting frequency for the random orbits induced by the semigroup action. Besides, we relate the recurrence to balls with the rates of expansion of the semigroup's generators and the topological entropy of the semigroup action. Finally, we establish a partial variational principle and prove an ergodic optimization for this kind of dynamical action.

Specification properties and thermodynamical properties of semigroup actions

In the present paper we study the thermodynamical properties of finitely generated continuous subgroup actions. We address a notion of topological entropy and pressure functions that does not depend on the growth rate of the semigroup and introduce strong and orbital specification properties, under which, the semigroup actions have positive topological entropy and all points are entropy points. Moreover, we study the convergence and Lipschitz regularity of the pressure function and obtain relations between topological entropy and exponential growth rate of periodic points in the context of semigroups of expanding maps. The specification properties for semigroup actions and the corresponding one for its generators and the action of push-forward maps is also discussed.

The centralizer of $C^r$-generic diffeomorphisms at hyperbolic basic sets is trivial

In the late nineties, Smale proposed a list of problems for the next century and, among these, it was conjectured that for every $r\ge 1$ a $C^r$-generic diffeomorphism has trivial centralizer. Our contribution here is to prove the triviality of $C^r$-centralizers on hyperbolic basic sets. In particular, $C^r$-generic transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms have a trivial $C^1$-centralizer. These results follow from a more general criterium for expansive homeomorphisms with the gluing orbit property. We also construct a linear Anosov diffeomorphism on $\mathbb T^3$ with discrete, non-trivial centralizer and with elements that are not roots. Finally, we prove that all elements in the centralizer of an Anosov diffeomorphism preserve some of its maximal entropy measures, and use this to characterize the centralizer of linear Anosov diffeomorphisms on tori.

Uniform hyperbolicity revisited: Index of periodic points and equidimensional cycles

In this paper we revisit uniformly hyperbolic basic sets and the domination of Oseledets splittings at periodic points. We prove that periodic points with simple Lyapunov spectrum are dense in non-trivial basic pieces of Cr-residual diffeomorphisms on three-dimensional manifolds (r >= 1). In the case of the C1-topology we can prove that either all periodic points of a hyperbolic basic piece for a diffeomorphism f have simple spectrum C1- robustly (in which case f has a finest dominated splitting into one-dimensional sub-bundles and all Lyapunov exponent functions of f are continuous in the weak*-topology) or it can be C1-approximated by an equidimensional cycle associated to periodic points with robust different signatures. The later can be used as a mechanism to guarantee the coexistence of infinitely many periodic points with different signatures.

Unique SRB measures and transitivity for Anosov diffeomorphisms

We prove that every $C^2$ Anosov diffeomorphism in a compact and connected Riemannian manifold has a unique SRB and physical probability measure, whose basin of attraction covers Lebesgue almost every point in the manifold. Then, we use structural stability of Anosov diffeomorphisms to deduce that all $C^1$ Anosov diffeomorphisms on compact and connected Riemannian manifolds are transitive.

Multifractal analysis for weak Gibbs measures: from large deviations to irregular sets

In this article we prove estimates for the topological pressure of the set of points whose Birkhoff time averages are far from the space averages corresponding to the unique equilibrium state that has a weak Gibbs property. In particular, if $f$ has an expanding repeller and $ϕ$ is an Hölder continuous potential we prove that the topological pressure of the set of points whose accumulation values of Birkhoff averages belong to some interval $I\subset \mathbb R$ can be expressed in terms of the topological pressure of the whole system and the large deviations rate function. As a byproduct we deduce that most irregular sets for maps with the specification property have topological pressure strictly smaller than the whole system. Some extensions to a non-uniformly hyperbolic setting, level-2 irregular sets and hyperbolic flows are also given.

Multifractal analysis of the irregular set for almost-additive sequences via large deviations

In this paper we introduce a notion of free energy and large deviations rate function for asymptotically additive sequences of potentials via an approximation method by families of continuous potentials. We provide estimates for the topological pressure of the set of points whose non-additive sequences are far from the limit described through Kingman's sub-additive ergodic theorem and give some applications in the context of Lyapunov exponents for diffeomorphisms and cocycles, and Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem for Gibbs measures.

Specification and partial hyperbolicity for flows

In this article we prove that if a flow exhibits a partially hyperbolic attractor and it has two periodic saddles with different indices, and the stable index of one of them coincides with the dimension of strongly stable bundles, then it does not satisfy the specification property. As an application, we prove that all Geometric Lorenz attractors do not satisfy the specification property.

A version of Kac's lemma on first return times for suspension flows

In this article we study the mean return times to a given set for suspension flows. In the discrete time setting, this corresponds to the classical version of Kac's lemma \cite{K} that the mean of the first return time to a set with respect to the normalized probability measure is one. In the case of suspension flows we provide formulas to compute the mean return time. In particular, this varies linearly with continuous reparametrizatons of the flow and takes into account the mean escaping time from the original set.

Contribution to the ergodic theory of robustly transitive maps

In this article we intend to contribute in the understanding of the ergodic properties of the set RT of robustly transitive local diffeomorphisms on a compact manifold M without boundary. We prove that there exists a C^1 residual subset R_0 of RT such that any f in R_0 has a residual subset of M with dense pre-orbits. Moreover, C^1 generically in the space of local diffeomorphisms with no splitting and all points with dense pre-orbit, there are uncountably many ergodic expanding invariant measures with full support and exhibiting exponential decay of correlations. In particular, these results hold for an important class of robustly transitive maps considered in [Lizana-Pujals'12].

Exponential law for random subshifts of finite type

In this paper we study the distribution of hitting times for a class of random dynamical systems. We prove that for invariant measures with super-polynomial decay of correlations hitting times to dynamically defined cylinders satisfy exponential distribution. Similar results are obtained for random expanding maps. We emphasize that what we establish is a quenched exponential law for hitting times.

Positive Lyapunov exponents for Hamiltonian linear differential systems

In the present paper we give a positive answer to some questions posed by Viana on the existence of positive Lyapunov exponents for Hamiltonian linear differential systems. We prove that there exists an open and dense set of Hamiltonian linear differential systems, over a suspension flow with bounded roof function, displaying at least one positive Lyapunov exponent. In consequence, typical cocycles over a uniformly hyperbolic flow are chaotic. Finally, we obtain similar results for cocycles over flows preserving an ergodic, hyperbolic measure with local product structure.

Partial hyperbolicity and specification

We study the specification property for partially hyperbolic dynamical systems. In particular, we show that if a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism has two saddles with different indices, and stable manifold of one of them coincides with the strongly stable leaf, then it does not satisfy the specification property. As an application, we prove that there exists a $C^1$-open and dense subset $\mathcal P$ in the set of robustly non-hyperbolic transitive diffeomorphisms on a three dimensional closed manifold such that diffeomorphisms in $\mathcal P$ do not satisfy the specification property.

Statistical properties of generalized-Viana maps

We study quadratic skew-products with parameters driven over piecewise expanding and Markov interval maps with countable many inverse branches, a generalization of the class of maps introduced by Viana. In particular we construct a class of multidimensional non-uniformly expanding attractors that exhibit both critical points and discontinuities and prove existence and uniqueness of an SRB measure with stretched-exponential decay of correlations, stretched-exponential large deviations and satisfying some limit laws. Moreover, generically such maps admit the coexistence of a dense subset of points with negative central Lyapunov exponent together with a full Lebesgue measure subset of points which have positive Lyapunov exponents in all directions. Finally, we discuss the existence of some non-uniformly hyperbolic attractors for skew-products associated to hyperbolic parameters.

Trivial and simple spectrum for SL(2,R) cocycles with free base and fiber dynamics

Let $AC_D(M,SL(2,\mathbb R))$ denote the pairs $(f,A)$ so that $f\in \mathcal A\subset \text{Diff}^{1}(M)$ is a $C^{1}$-Anosov transitive diffeomorphisms and $A$ is an $SL(2,\mathbb R)$ cocycle dominated with respect to $f$. We prove that open and densely in $AC_D(M,SL(2,\mathbb R))$ (in appropriate topologies) the pair $(f,A)$ has simple spectrum with respect to the unique maximal entropy measure $μ_f$. On the other hand, there exists a residual subset $\mathcal{R}\subset \text{Aut}_{Leb}(M)\times L^\infty(M,SL(2,\mathbb R))$, with respect to the separate topology, such that any element $(f,A)$ in $\mathcal{R}$ has trivial spectrum or it is hyperbolic. Then, we prove prevalence of trivial spectrum near the dynamical cocycle of an area-preserving map and also for generic cocycles in $\text{Aut}_{Leb}(M)\times L^p(M,SL(2,\mathbb R))$.

Equilibrium states for non-uniformly expanding maps: decay of correlations and strong stability

We study the rate of decay of correlations for equilibrium states associated to a robust class of non-uniformly expanding maps where no Markov assumption is required. We show that the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius operator acting on the space of Holder continuous observables has a spectral gap and deduce the exponential decay of correlations and the central limit theorem. In particular, we obtain an alternative proof for the existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium states and we prove that the topological pressure varies continuously. Finally, we use the spectral properties of the transfer operators in space of differentiable observables to obtain strong stability results under deterministic and random perturbations.

Non-uniform specification and large deviations for weak Gibbs measures

We establish bounds for the measure of deviation sets associated to continuous observables with respect to not necessarily invariant weak Gibbs measures. Under some mild assumptions, we obtain upper and lower bounds for the measure of deviation sets of some non-uniformly expanding maps, including quadratic maps and robust multidimensional non-uniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms. For that purpose, a measure theoretical weak form of specification is introduced and proved to hold for the robust classes of multidimensional nonuniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms and Viana maps.

Entropy Formulas For Dynamical Systems With Mistakes

We study the recurrence to mistake dynamical balls, that is, dynamical balls that admit some errors and whose proportion of errors decrease tends to zero with the length of the dynamical ball. We prove, under mild assumptions, that the measure-theoretic entropy coincides with the exponential growth rate of return times to mistake dynamical balls and that minimal return times to mistake dynamical balls grow linearly with respect to its length. Moreover we obtain averaged recurrence formula for subshifts of finite type and suspension semiflows. Applications include $β$-transformations, Axiom A flows and suspension semiflows of maps with a mild specification property. In particular we extend some results from [4, 9, 17] for mistake dynamical balls.

On the entropy of conservative flows

We obtain a $C^1$-generic subset of the incompressible flows in a closed three-dimensional manifold where Pesin's entropy formula holds thus establishing the continuous-time version of \cite{T}. Moreover, in any compact manifold of dimension larger or equal to three we obtain that the metric entropy function and the integrated upper Lyapunov exponent function are not continuous with respect to the $C^1$ Whitney topology. Finally, we establish the $C^2$-genericity of Pesin's entropy formula in the context of Hamiltonian four-dimensional flows.

Entropy and Poincaré recurrence from a geometrical viewpoint

We study Poincaré recurrence from a purely geometrical viewpoint. We prove that the metric entropy is given by the exponential growth rate of return times to dynamical balls. This is the geometrical counterpart of Ornstein-Weiss theorem. Moreover, we show that minimal return times to dynamical balls grow linearly with respect to its length. Finally, some interesting relations between recurrence, dimension, entropy and Lyapunov exponents of ergodic measures are given.
