A CR invariant sphere theorem

We prove that every closed, universally embeddable CR three-manifold with nonnegative Yamabe constant and positive total $Q^\prime$-curvature is contact diffeomorphic to a quotient of the standard contact three-sphere. We also prove that every closed, embeddable CR three-manifold with zero Yamabe constant and nonnegative total $Q^\prime$-curvature is CR equivalent to a compact quotient of the Heisenberg group with its flat CR structure.

Extremal metrics for the ${Q}^\prime$-curvature in three dimensions

We construct contact forms with constant $Q^\prime$-curvature on compact three-dimensional CR manifolds which admit a pseudo-Einstein contact form and satisfy some natural positivity conditions. These contact forms are obtained by minimizing the CR analogue of the $II$-functional from conformal geometry. Two crucial steps are to show that the $P^\prime$-operator can be regarded as an elliptic pseudodifferential operator and to compute the leading order terms of the asymptotic expansion of the Green's function for $\sqrt{P^\prime}$.

Isoperimetric inequality on CR-manifolds with nonnegative $Q'$-curvature

In this paper, we study contact forms on the three- dimensional Heisenberg manifold with its standard CR structure. We discover that the $Q'$-curvature, introduced by Branson, Fontana and Morpurgo [BFM13] on the CR three-sphere and then generalized to any pseudo-Einstein CR three manifold by Case and Yang [CY95], controls the isoperimetric inequality on such a CR-manifold. To show this, we first prove that the nonnegative Webster curvature at infinity deduces that the metric is normal, which is analogous to the behavior on a Riemannian four-manifold.

Strong maximum principle for mean curvature operators on subriemannian manifolds

We study the strong maximum principle for horizontal (p-) mean curvature operator and p-(sub)laplacian operator on subriemannian manifolds including, in particular, Heisenberg groups and Heisenberg cylinders. Under a certain Hormander type condition on vector fields, we show the strong maximum principle holds in higher dimensions for two cases: (a) the touching point is nonsingular; (b) the touching point is an isolated singular point for one of comparison functions. For a background subriemannian manifold with local symmetry of isometric translations, we have the strong maximum principle for associated graphs which include, among others, intrinsic graphs with constant horizontal (p-) mean curvature. As applications, we show a rigidity result of horizontal (p-) minimal hypersurfaces in any higher dimensional Heisenberg cylinder and a pseudo-halfspace theorem for any Heisenberg group.

A Remark on the Kernel of the CR Paneitz operator

For CR structures in dimension three, the CR pluriharmonic functions are characterized by the vanishing of a third order operator. This third order operator, after composition with the divergence operator, gives the fourth order analogue of the Paneitz operator. In this short note, we give criteria under which the kernel of the CR Paneitz operator contains a supplementary space to the CR pluriharmonic functions.

Isoperimetric domains in homogeneous three-manifolds and the isoperimetric constant of the Heisenberg group $\mathsf{H}^1$

In this paper we prove that isoperimetric sets in three-dimensional homogeneous spaces diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^3$ are topological balls. We also prove that in three-dimensional homogeneous spheres isopermetric sets are either two-spheres or symmetric genus-one tori. We then apply our first result to the three-dimensional Heisenberg group $\mathsf{H}^1$, characterizing the isoperimetric sets and constants for a family of Riemannian adapted metrics. Using $Γ$-convergence of the perimeter functionals, we also settle an isoperimetric conjecture in $\mathsf{H}^1$ posed by P.Pansu.

The CR Paneitz Operator and the Stability of CR Pluriharmonic Functions

We give a condition which ensures that the Paneitz operator of an embedded three-dimensional CR manifold is nonnegative and has kernel consisting only of the CR pluriharmonic functions. Our condition requires uniform positivity of the Webster scalar curvature and the stability of the CR pluriharmonic functions for a real analytic deformation. As an application, we show that the real ellipsoids in $\mathbb{C}^2$ are such that the CR Paneitz operator is nonnegative with kernel consisting only of the CR pluriharmonic functions.

Umbilic hypersurfaces of constant sigma-k curvature in the Heisenberg group

We study immersed, connected, umbilic hypersurfaces in the Heisenberg group $H_{n}$ with $n$ $\geq $ $2.$ We show that such a hypersurface, if closed, must be rotationally invariant up to a Heisenberg translation. Moreover, we prove that, among others, Pansu spheres are the only such spheres with positive constant sigma-k curvature up to Heisenberg translations.

A Paneitz-type operator for CR pluriharmonic functions

We introduce a fourth order CR invariant operator on pluriharmonic functions on a three-dimensional CR manifold, generalizing to the abstract setting the operator discovered by Branson, Fontana and Morpurgo. For a distinguished class of contact forms, all of which have vanishing Hirachi-$Q$ curvature, these operators determine a new scalar invariant with properties analogous to the usual $Q$-curvature. We discuss how these are similar to the (conformal) Paneitz operator and $Q$-curvature of a four-manifold, and describe its relation to some problems for three-dimensional CR manifolds.

A positive mass theorem in three dimensional Cauchy-Riemann geometry

We define an ADM-like mass, called p-mass, for an asymptotically flat pseudohermitian manifold. The p-mass for the blow-up of a compact pseudohermitian manifold (with no boundary) is identified with the first nontrivial coefficient in the expansion of the Green function for the CR Laplacian. We deduce an integral formula for the p-mass, and we reduce its positivity to a solution of Kohn's equation. We prove that the p-mass is non-negative for (blow-ups of) compact 3-manifolds of positive Tanaka-Webster class and with non-negative CR Paneitz operator. Under these assumptions, we also characterize the zero mass case as the standard three dimensional CR sphere. We then show the existence of (non-embeddable) CR 3-manifolds having nonpositive Paneitz operator or negative p-mass through a second variation formula. Finally, we apply our main result to find solutions of the CR Yamabe problem with minimal energy.

Uniformization of spherical CR manifolds

Let $M$ be a closed (compact with no boundary) spherical $CR$ manifold of dimension $2n+1$. Let $\widetilde{M}$ be the universal covering of $M.$ Let $% Φ$ denote a $CR$ developing map {equation*} Φ:\widetilde{M}\rightarrow S^{2n+1} {equation*}% where $S^{2n+1}$ is the standard unit sphere in complex $n+1$-space $C^{n+1}$% . Suppose that the $CR$ Yamabe invariant of $M$ is positive. Then we show that $Φ$ is injective for $n\geq 3$. In the case $n=2$, we also show that $Φ$ is injective under the condition: $s(M)<1$. It then follows that $M$ is uniformizable.

Embedded Three Dimensional CR Manifolds and the Non-Negativity of Paneitz Operators

Let $Ω$ be a bounded strictly pseudoconvex domain in $C^2$ with a smooth, connected and compact boundary M and having a CR structure $J_0$ induced from $C^2$. Assume this CR structure has zero Webster torsion. Then if we deform the CR structure through real-analytic dependence on the deformation parameter and such that each deformed structure along the deformation path is smooth and embeddable in $C^2$, we show that for small deformations of the CR structure $J$ from $J_0$, the associated CR Paneitz operator for $J$ is non-negative. We also show that the Webster curvature for any ellipsoid in $C^2$ is positive. The results in this paper complement and provide partial converses to our earlier paper, (to appear Duke Math. J.) arxiv: 1007.5020.

A Codazzi-like equation and the singular set for $C^{1}$ smooth surfaces in the Heisenberg group

In this paper, we study the structure of the singular set for a $C^{1}$ smooth surface in the $3$-dimensional Heisenberg group $\boldsymbol{H}_{1}$. We discover a Codazzi-like equation for the $p$-area element along the characteristic curves on the surface. Information obtained from this ordinary differential equation helps us to analyze the local configuration of the singular set and the characteristic curves. In particular, we can estimate the size and obtain the regularity of the singular set. We understand the global structure of the singular set through a Hopf-type index theorem. We also justify that Codazzi-like equation by proving a fundamental theorem for local surfaces in $\boldsymbol{H}_{1}$.
