A CR invariant sphere theorem

We prove that every closed, universally embeddable CR three-manifold with nonnegative Yamabe constant and positive total $Q^\prime$-curvature is contact diffeomorphic to a quotient of the standard contact three-sphere. We also prove that every closed, embeddable CR three-manifold with zero Yamabe constant and nonnegative total $Q^\prime$-curvature is CR equivalent to a compact quotient of the Heisenberg group with its flat CR structure.

An interesting family of conformally invariant one-forms in even dimensions

We construct a natural conformally invariant one-form of weight $-2k$ on any $2k$-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold which is closely related to the Pfaffian of the Weyl tensor. On oriented manifolds, we also construct natural conformally invariant one-forms of weight $-4k$ on any $4k$-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold which are closely related to top degree Pontrjagin forms. The weight of these forms implies that they define functionals on the space of conformal Killing fields. On Riemannian manifolds, we show that this functional is trivial for the former form but not for the latter forms. As a consequence, we obtain global obstructions to the existence of an Einstein metric in a given conformal class.

Curved versions of the Ovsienko-Redou operators

We give a complete classification of tangential bidifferential operators of total order at most $n$ which are expressed purely in terms of the Laplacian on the ambient space of an $n$-dimensional manifold. This gives a curved analogue of the classification, due to Ovsienko--Redou and Clerc, of conformally invariant bidifferential operators on the sphere. As an application, we construct a large class of formally self-adjoint conformally invariant differential operators.

Global obstructions to conformally Einstein metrics in dimension six

We present a global conformal invariant on closed six-manifolds which obstructs the existence of a conformally Einstein metric. We show that this obstruction is nontrivial and, up to multiplication by a constant, is the unique such invariant. This also gives rise to a (possibly trivial) diffeomorphism invariant which obstructs the existence of an Einstein metric. We also discuss global conformal invariants which obstruct the existence of a conformally Einstein metric on closed six-manifolds with infinite fundamental group.

Some $Q$-curvature operators on five-dimensional pseudohermitian manifolds

We construct $Q$-curvature operators on $d$-closed $(1,1)$-forms and on $\overline{\partial}_b$-closed $(0,1)$-forms on five-dimensional pseudohermitian manifolds. These closely related operators give rise to a new formula for the scalar $Q$-curvature. As applications, we give a cohomological characterization of CR five-manifolds which admit a $Q$-flat contact form; and we show that every closed, strictly pseudoconvex CR five-manifold with trivial first real Chern class admits a $Q$-flat contact form provided the $Q$-curvature operator on $\overline{\partial}_b$-closed $(0,1)$-forms is nonnegative.

Some constructions of formally self-adjoint conformally covariant polydifferential operators

We introduce the notion of formally self-adjoint conformally covariant polydifferential operators and give some constructions of families of such operators. In one direction, we show that any homogeneous conformally variational scalar Riemannian invariant (CVI) induces one of these operators. In another direction, we use the ambient metric to give alternative constructions of certain operators produced this way, one of which is a formally self-adjoint, fourth-order, conformally covariant tridifferential operator which should be regarded as the simplest fully nonlinear analogue of the Paneitz operator.

$\mathcal{I}^\prime$-curvatures in higher dimensions and the Hirachi conjecture

We construct higher-dimensional analogues of the $\mathcal{I}^\prime$-curvature of Case and Gover in all CR dimensions $n\geq2$. Our $\mathcal{I}^\prime$-curvatures all transform by a first-order linear differential operator under a change of contact form and their total integrals are independent of the choice of pseudo-Einstein contact form on a closed CR manifold. We exhibit examples where these total integrals depend on the choice of general contact form, and thereby produce counterexamples to the Hirachi conjecture in all CR dimensions $n\geq2$.

The Frank-Lieb approach to sharp Sobolev inequalities

Frank and Lieb gave a new, rearrangement-free, proof of the sharp Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequalities by exploiting their conformal covariance. Using this they gave new proofs of sharp Sobolev inequalities for the embeddings $W^{k,2}(\mathbb{R}^n)\hookrightarrow L^{\frac{2n}{n-2k}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. We show that their argument gives a direct proof of the latter inequalities without passing through Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequalities, and, moreover, a new proof of a sharp fully nonlinear Sobolev inequality involving the $σ_2$-curvature. Our argument relies on nice commutator identities deduced using the Fefferman-Graham ambient metric.

A fully nonlinear Sobolev trace inequality

The $k$-Hessian operator $σ_k$ is the $k$-th elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Hessian. It is known that the $k$-Hessian equation $σ_k(D^2u)=f$ with Dirichlet boundary condition $u=0$ is variational; indeed, this problem can be studied by means of the $k$-Hessian energy $-\int uσ_k(D^2u)$. We construct a natural boundary functional which, when added to the $k$-Hessian energy, yields as its critical points solutions of $k$-Hessian equations with general non-vanishing boundary data. As a consequence, we prove a sharp Sobolev trace inequality for $k$-admissible functions $u$ which estimates the $k$-Hessian energy in terms of the boundary values of $u$.

A notion of the weighted $σ_k$-curvature for manifolds with density

We propose a natural definition of the weighted $σ_k$-curvature for a manifold with density; i.e.\ a triple $(M^n,g,e^{-ϕ}\mathrm{dvol})$. This definition is intended to capture the key properties of the $σ_k$-curvatures in conformal geometry with the role of pointwise conformal changes of the metric replaced by pointwise changes of the measure. We justify our definition through three main results. First, we show that shrinking gradient Ricci solitons are local extrema of the total weighted $σ_k$-curvature functionals when the weighted $σ_k$-curvature is variational. Second, we characterize the shrinking Gaussians as measures on Euclidean space in terms of the total weighted $σ_k$-curvature functionals. Third, we characterize when the weighted $σ_k$-curvature is variational. These results are all analogues of their conformal counterparts, and in the case $k=1$ recover some of the well-known properties of Perelman's $\mathcal{W}$-functional.

Extremal metrics for the ${Q}^\prime$-curvature in three dimensions

We construct contact forms with constant $Q^\prime$-curvature on compact three-dimensional CR manifolds which admit a pseudo-Einstein contact form and satisfy some natural positivity conditions. These contact forms are obtained by minimizing the CR analogue of the $II$-functional from conformal geometry. Two crucial steps are to show that the $P^\prime$-operator can be regarded as an elliptic pseudodifferential operator and to compute the leading order terms of the asymptotic expansion of the Green's function for $\sqrt{P^\prime}$.

A Remark on the Kernel of the CR Paneitz operator

For CR structures in dimension three, the CR pluriharmonic functions are characterized by the vanishing of a third order operator. This third order operator, after composition with the divergence operator, gives the fourth order analogue of the Paneitz operator. In this short note, we give criteria under which the kernel of the CR Paneitz operator contains a supplementary space to the CR pluriharmonic functions.

A Yamabe-type problem on smooth metric measure spaces

We describe and partially solve a natural Yamabe-type problem on smooth metric measure spaces which interpolates between the Yamabe problem and the problem of finding minimizers for Perelman's $ν$-entropy. This problem reduces in all dimensions on Euclidean space to the characterization of the minimizers of the family of Gagliardo--Nirenberg--Sobolev inequalities studied by Del Pino and Dolbeault. We show that minimizers always exist on a compact manifold provided the so-called weighted Yamabe constant is strictly less than its value on Euclidean space. We also show that strict inequality holds for a large class of smooth metric measure spaces, but we will also give an example which shows that minimizers of the weighted Yamabe constant do not always exist.

Boundary operators associated to the Paneitz operator

We describe a set of conformally covariant boundary operators associated to the Paneitz operator, in the sense that they give rise to a conformally covariant energy functional for the Paneitz operator on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. These operators naturally give rise to a first- and third-order conformally covariant pseudodifferential operator. In the setting of Poincaré--Einstein manifolds, we show that these operators agree with the fractional GJMS operators of Graham and Zworski. We also use our operators to establish some new sharp Sobolev trace inequalities.

The CR Paneitz Operator and the Stability of CR Pluriharmonic Functions

We give a condition which ensures that the Paneitz operator of an embedded three-dimensional CR manifold is nonnegative and has kernel consisting only of the CR pluriharmonic functions. Our condition requires uniform positivity of the Webster scalar curvature and the stability of the CR pluriharmonic functions for a real analytic deformation. As an application, we show that the real ellipsoids in $\mathbb{C}^2$ are such that the CR Paneitz operator is nonnegative with kernel consisting only of the CR pluriharmonic functions.

On fractional GJMS operators

We describe a new interpretation of the fractional GJMS operators as generalized Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators associated to weighted GJMS operators on naturally associated smooth metric measure spaces. This gives a geometric interpretation of the Caffarelli--Silvestre extension for $(-Δ)^γ$ when $γ\in(0,1)$, and both a geometric interpretation and a curved analogue of the higher order extension found by R. Yang for $(-Δ)^γ$ when $γ>1$. We give three applications of this correspondence. First, we exhibit some energy identities for the fractional GJMS operators in terms of energies in the compactified Poincaré--Einstein manifold, including an interpretation as a renormalized energy. Second, for $γ\in(1,2)$, we show that if the scalar curvature and the fractional $Q$-curvature $Q_{2γ}$ of the boundary are nonnegative, then the fractional GJMS operator $P_{2γ}$ is nonnegative. Third, by assuming additionally that $Q_{2γ}$ is not identically zero, we show that $P_{2γ}$ satisfies a strong maximum principle.

A generalization of the Cai--Galloway splitting theorem to smooth metric measure spaces

We generalize the splitting theorem of Cai-Galloway for complete Riemannian manifolds with $\Ric\geq-(n-1)$ admitting a family of compact hypersurfaces tending to infinity with mean curvatures tending to $n-1$ sufficiently fast to the setting of smooth metric measure spaces. This result complements and provides a new perspective on the splitting theorems recently proven by Munteanu-Wang and Su-Zhang. We show that the mean curvature assumption in our result is sharp, which also provides an example showing that the assumption $R\geq-(n-1)$ in the Munteanu-Wang splitting theorem for expanding gradient Ricci solitons cannot be relaxed to $R>-n$. We also use our result to study a certain class of conformally compact quasi-Einstein metrics, giving, as generalizations of respective results of Cai-Galloway and Lee, necessary conditions for the boundary to be connected and for the bottom of the spectrum of the weighted Laplacian to be maximal.

A Paneitz-type operator for CR pluriharmonic functions

We introduce a fourth order CR invariant operator on pluriharmonic functions on a three-dimensional CR manifold, generalizing to the abstract setting the operator discovered by Branson, Fontana and Morpurgo. For a distinguished class of contact forms, all of which have vanishing Hirachi-$Q$ curvature, these operators determine a new scalar invariant with properties analogous to the usual $Q$-curvature. We discuss how these are similar to the (conformal) Paneitz operator and $Q$-curvature of a four-manifold, and describe its relation to some problems for three-dimensional CR manifolds.

Sharp metric obstructions for quasi-Einstein metrics

Using the tractor calculus to study smooth metric measure spaces, we adapt results of Gover and Nurowski to give sharp metric obstructions to the existence of quasi-Einstein metrics on suitably generic manifolds. We do this by introducing an analogue of the Weyl tractor $W$ to the setting of smooth metric measure spaces. The obstructions we obtain can be realized as tensorial invariants which are polynomial in the Riemann curvature tensor and its divergence. By taking suitable limits of their tensorial forms, we then find obstructions to the existence of static potentials, generalizing to higher dimensions a result of Bartnik and Tod, and to the existence of potentials for gradient Ricci solitons.

Smooth metric measure spaces and quasi-Einstein metrics

Smooth metric measure spaces have been studied from the two different perspectives of Bakry-Émery and Chang-Gursky-Yang, both of which are closely related to work of Perelman on the Ricci flow. These perspectives include a generalization of the Ricci curvature and the associated quasi-Einstein metrics, which include Einstein metrics, conformally Einstein metrics, gradient Ricci solitons, and static metrics. In this article, we describe a natural perspective on smooth metric measure spaces from the point of view of conformal geometry and show how it unites these earlier perspectives within a unified framework. We offer many results and interpretations which illustrate the unifying nature of this perspective, including a natural variational characterization of quasi-Einstein metrics as well as some interesting families of examples of such metrics.

Smooth metric measure spaces, quasi-Einstein metrics, and tractors

We introduce the tractor formalism from conformal geometry to the study of smooth metric measure spaces. In particular, this gives rise to a correspondence between quasi-Einstein metrics and parallel sections of certain tractor bundles. We use this formulation to give a sharp upper bound on the dimension of the vector space of quasi-Einstein metrics, providing a different perspective on some recent results of He, Petersen and Wylie.

The energy of a smooth metric measure space and applications

We introduce and study the notion of the energy of a smooth metric measure space, which includes as special cases the Yamabe constant and Perelman's $ν$-entropy. We then investigate some properties the energy shares with these constants, in particular its relationship with the $κ$-noncollapsing property. Finally, we use the energy to prove a precompactness theorem for the space of compact quasi-Einstein smooth metric measure spaces, in the spirit of similar results for Einstein metrics and gradient Ricci solitons.

Conformal invariants measuring the best constants for Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequalities

We introduce a family of conformal invariants associated to a smooth metric measure space which generalize the relationship between the Yamabe constant and the best constant for the Sobolev inequality to the best constants for Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequalities $\|w\r|_q \leq C\|\nabla w\|_2^θ\|w\|_p^{1-θ}$. These invariants are constructed via a minimization procedure for the weighted scalar curvature functional in the conformal class of a smooth metric measure space. We then describe critical points which are also critical points for variations in the metric or the measure. When the measure is assumed to take a special form --- for example, as the volume element of an Einstein metric --- we use this description to show that minimizers of our invariants are only critical for certain values of $p$ and $q$. In particular, on Euclidean space our result states that either $p=2(q-1)$ or $q=2(p-1)$, giving a new characterization of the GNS inequalities whose sharp constants were computed by Del Pino and Dolbeault.

On the nonexistence of quasi-Einstein metrics

We study complete Riemannian manifolds satisfying the equation $Ric+\nabla^2 f-\frac{1}{m}df\otimes df=0$ by studying the associated PDE $Δ_f f + mμe^{2f/m}=0$ for $μ\leq 0$. By developing a gradient estimate for $f$, we show there are no nonconstant solutions. We then apply this to show that there are no nontrivial Ricci flat warped products with fibers which have nonpositive Einstein constant. We also show that for nontrivial steady gradient Ricci solitons, the quantity $R+|\nabla f|^2$ is a positive constant.

Singularity theorems and the Lorentzian splitting theorem for the Bakry-Emery-Ricci tensor

We consider the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems and the Lorentzian splitting theorem under the weaker curvature condition of nonnegative Bakry-Emery-Ricci curvature $Ric_f^m$ in timelike directions. We prove that they still hold when $m$ is finite, and when $m$ is infinite, they hold under the additional assumption that $f$ is bounded from above.
