Strong maximum principle for mean curvature operators on subriemannian manifolds

We study the strong maximum principle for horizontal (p-) mean curvature operator and p-(sub)laplacian operator on subriemannian manifolds including, in particular, Heisenberg groups and Heisenberg cylinders. Under a certain Hormander type condition on vector fields, we show the strong maximum principle holds in higher dimensions for two cases: (a) the touching point is nonsingular; (b) the touching point is an isolated singular point for one of comparison functions. For a background subriemannian manifold with local symmetry of isometric translations, we have the strong maximum principle for associated graphs which include, among others, intrinsic graphs with constant horizontal (p-) mean curvature. As applications, we show a rigidity result of horizontal (p-) minimal hypersurfaces in any higher dimensional Heisenberg cylinder and a pseudo-halfspace theorem for any Heisenberg group.

Isoperimetric domains in homogeneous three-manifolds and the isoperimetric constant of the Heisenberg group $\mathsf{H}^1$

In this paper we prove that isoperimetric sets in three-dimensional homogeneous spaces diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^3$ are topological balls. We also prove that in three-dimensional homogeneous spheres isopermetric sets are either two-spheres or symmetric genus-one tori. We then apply our first result to the three-dimensional Heisenberg group $\mathsf{H}^1$, characterizing the isoperimetric sets and constants for a family of Riemannian adapted metrics. Using $Γ$-convergence of the perimeter functionals, we also settle an isoperimetric conjecture in $\mathsf{H}^1$ posed by P.Pansu.

Umbilic hypersurfaces of constant sigma-k curvature in the Heisenberg group

We study immersed, connected, umbilic hypersurfaces in the Heisenberg group $H_{n}$ with $n$ $\geq $ $2.$ We show that such a hypersurface, if closed, must be rotationally invariant up to a Heisenberg translation. Moreover, we prove that, among others, Pansu spheres are the only such spheres with positive constant sigma-k curvature up to Heisenberg translations.

A positive mass theorem in three dimensional Cauchy-Riemann geometry

We define an ADM-like mass, called p-mass, for an asymptotically flat pseudohermitian manifold. The p-mass for the blow-up of a compact pseudohermitian manifold (with no boundary) is identified with the first nontrivial coefficient in the expansion of the Green function for the CR Laplacian. We deduce an integral formula for the p-mass, and we reduce its positivity to a solution of Kohn's equation. We prove that the p-mass is non-negative for (blow-ups of) compact 3-manifolds of positive Tanaka-Webster class and with non-negative CR Paneitz operator. Under these assumptions, we also characterize the zero mass case as the standard three dimensional CR sphere. We then show the existence of (non-embeddable) CR 3-manifolds having nonpositive Paneitz operator or negative p-mass through a second variation formula. Finally, we apply our main result to find solutions of the CR Yamabe problem with minimal energy.

Flows and a tangency condition for embeddable CR structures in dimension 3

We study the fillability (or embeddability) of 3-dimensional $CR$ structures under the geometric flows. Suppose we can solve a certain second order equation for the geometric quantity associated to the flow. Then we prove that if the initial $CR$ structure is fillable, then it keeps having the same property as long as the flow has a solution. We discuss the situation for the torsion flow and the Cartan flow. In the second part, we show that the above mentioned second order operator is used to express a tangency condition for the space of all fillable or embeddable $CR$ structures at one embedded in $\mathbb{C}^{2}.$

Uniformization of spherical CR manifolds

Let $M$ be a closed (compact with no boundary) spherical $CR$ manifold of dimension $2n+1$. Let $\widetilde{M}$ be the universal covering of $M.$ Let $% Φ$ denote a $CR$ developing map {equation*} Φ:\widetilde{M}\rightarrow S^{2n+1} {equation*}% where $S^{2n+1}$ is the standard unit sphere in complex $n+1$-space $C^{n+1}$% . Suppose that the $CR$ Yamabe invariant of $M$ is positive. Then we show that $Φ$ is injective for $n\geq 3$. In the case $n=2$, we also show that $Φ$ is injective under the condition: $s(M)<1$. It then follows that $M$ is uniformizable.

Uniqueness of generalized p-area minimizers and integrability of a horizontal normal in the Heisenberg group

We study the uniqueness of generalized $p$-minimal surfaces in the Heisenberg group. The generalized $p$-area of a graph defined by $u$ reads $\int |\nabla u+\vec{F}| + Hu$. If $u$ and $v$ are two minimizers for the generalized $p$-area satisfying the same Dirichlet boundary condition, then we can only get $N_{\vec{F}}(u)$ $=$ $N_{\vec{F}}(v)$ (on the nonsingular set) where $N_{\vec{F}}(w)$ $:=$ $\frac{\nabla w+\vec{F}}{|\nabla w+\vec{F}|}.$ To conclude $u$ $=$ $v$ (or $\nabla u$ $=$ $\nabla v)$, it is not straightforward as in the Riemannian case, but requires some special argument in general. In this paper, for a generalized area functional including $p$-area, we prove that $N_{\vec{F}}(u)$ $=$ $N_{\vec{F}}(v)$ implies $\nabla u$ $=$ $\nabla v$ in dimension $\geq $ 3 under some rank condition on derivatives of $\vec{F}$ or the nonintegrability condition of contact form associated to $u$ or $v$. Note that in dimension 2 ($n=1),$ the above statement is no longer true. Inspired by an equation for the horizontal normal $N_{\vec{F}}(u),$ we study the integrability for a unit vector to be the horizontal normal of a graph. We find a Codazzi-like equation together with this equation to form an integrability condition.

A Codazzi-like equation and the singular set for $C^{1}$ smooth surfaces in the Heisenberg group

In this paper, we study the structure of the singular set for a $C^{1}$ smooth surface in the $3$-dimensional Heisenberg group $\boldsymbol{H}_{1}$. We discover a Codazzi-like equation for the $p$-area element along the characteristic curves on the surface. Information obtained from this ordinary differential equation helps us to analyze the local configuration of the singular set and the characteristic curves. In particular, we can estimate the size and obtain the regularity of the singular set. We understand the global structure of the singular set through a Hopf-type index theorem. We also justify that Codazzi-like equation by proving a fundamental theorem for local surfaces in $\boldsymbol{H}_{1}$.
