Spacetimes with all Penrose limits diagonalisable

We consider the problem of finding all space-time metrics for which all plane-wave Penrose limits are diagonalisable plane waves. This requirement leads to a conformally invariant differential condition on the Weyl spinor which we analyse for different algebraic types in the Petrov-Pirani-Penrose classification. The only vacuum examples, apart from actual plane waves which are their own Penrose limit, are some of the nonrotating type D metrics, but some nonvacuum solutions are also identified. The condition requires the Weyl spinor, whenever it is nonzero, to be proportional to a valence-4 Killing spinor with a real function of proportionality.

Non-diagonal four-dimensional cohomogeneity-one Einstein metrics in various signatures

Most known four-dimensional cohomogeneity-one Einstein metrics are diagonal in the basis defined by the left-invariant one-forms, though some essentially non-diagonal ones are known. We consider the problem of explicitly seeking non-diagonal Einstein metrics, and we find solutions which in some cases exhaust the possibilities. In particular we construct new examples of neutral signature non--diagonal Bianchi type VIII Einstein metrics with self--dual Weyl tensor.

A positive Bondi--type mass in asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes

The general structure of the conformal boundary $\mathscr{I}^+$ of asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes is investigated. First we show that Penrose's quasi-local mass, associated with a cut ${\cal S}$ of the conformal boundary, can be zero even in the presence of outgoing gravitational radiation. On the other hand, following a Witten--type spinorial proof, we show that an analogous expression based on the Nester--Witten form is finite only if the Witten spinor field solves the 2-surface twistor equation on ${\cal S}$, and it yields a positive functional on the 2-surface twistor space on ${\cal S}$, provided the matter fields satisfy the dominant energy condition. Moreover, this functional is vanishing if and only if the domain of dependence of the spacelike hypersurface which intersects $\mathscr{I}^+$ in the cut ${\cal S}$ is locally isometric to the de Sitter spacetime. For non-contorted cuts this functional yields an invariant analogous to the Bondi mass.

Penrose's quasi-local mass for asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-times

Penrose's quasi-local mass construction is carried through for two-surfaces at infinity in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-times. A modification of the Witten argument is given to prove a positivity property of the resulting conserved quantities. [This work formed part of Ron Kelly's Oxford D.Phil. thesis, and the first person pronoun refers to him. It appeared in hand-written form as `Asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-times' in Twistor Newsletter 20 (1985) pp11-23 (available at http://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/lmason/Tn/TN1-25), but is appearing type-set for the first time here. Footnotes marked ${\bf{PT}}$ have been added for this version by Paul Tod, in the hope of making this work available to a wider audience.]

Some geometry of de Sitter space

In this expository note, I present some basic geometric and twistor theoretic facts about de Sitter space leading up to a discussion of Penrose's quasi-local mass construction for linear gravity theory in the de Sitter background. The corresponding results for Minkowski space and anti--de Sitter space are familiar and can be found in \cite{PR} or \cite{HT} for the former and \cite{KT} for the latter. Some of the formulas given here are also quite familiar, but some are thought to be new and it is convenient to have these facts collected in one place.

Self-Dual Conformal Gravity

We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a Riemannian four-dimensional manifold $(M, g)$ with anti-self-dual Weyl tensor to be locally conformal to a Ricci--flat manifold. These conditions are expressed as the vanishing of scalar and tensor conformal invariants. The invariants obstruct the existence of parallel sections of a certain connection on a complex rank-four vector bundle over $M$. They provide a natural generalisation of the Bach tensor which vanishes identically for anti-self-dual conformal structures. We use the obstructions to demonstrate that LeBrun's anti-self-dual metrics on connected sums of $\CP^2$s are not conformally Ricci-flat on any open set. We analyze both Riemannian and neutral signature metrics. In the latter case we find all anti-self-dual metrics with a parallel real spinor which are locally conformal to Einstein metrics with non-zero cosmological constant. These metrics admit a hyper-surface orthogonal null Killing vector and thus give rise to projective structures on the space of $β$-surfaces.

Twistor Construction of Higher-Dimensional Black Holes - Part II: Examples

We apply the twistor construction for higher-dimensional black holes to known examples in five space-time dimensions. First the patching matrices are calculated from the explicit metric for these examples. Then an ansatz is proposed for obtaining the patching matrix instead from the data of rod structure and angular momenta. The ansatz is tested on examples with up to three nuts, and these are shown to give flat space, the Myers-Perry solution and the black ring, as expected. Rules for the transition between different adaptations of the patching matrix and for the elimination of conical singularities are developed and seen to work.

Some examples of the behaviour of conformal geodesics

With the aid of concrete examples, we consider the question of whether, in the presence of conformal curvature, a conformal geodesic can become trapped in smaller and smaller sets, or phrased informally: are spirals possible? We do not arrive at a definitive answer, but we are able to find situations where this behaviour is ruled out, including a reduction of the conformal-geodesic equations to quadratures in a specific non-conformally flat metric.

Twistor geometry of a pair of second order ODEs

We discuss the twistor correspondence between path geometries in three dimensions with vanishing Wilczynski invariants and anti-self-dual conformal structures of signature $(2, 2)$. We show how to reconstruct a system of ODEs with vanishing invariants for a given conformal structure, highlighting the Ricci-flat case in particular. Using this framework, we give a new derivation of the Wilczynski invariants for a system of ODEs whose solution space is endowed with a conformal structure. We explain how to reconstruct the conformal structure directly from the integral curves, and present new examples of systems of ODEs with point symmetry algebra of dimension four and greater which give rise to anti--self--dual structures with conformal symmetry algebra of the same dimension. Some of these examples are $(2, 2)$ analogues of plane wave space--times in General Relativity. Finally we discuss a variational principle for twistor curves arising from the Finsler structures with scalar flag curvature.

Cosmological Einstein-Maxwell Instantons and Euclidean Supersymmetry: Beyond Self-Duality

We construct new supersymmetric solutions to the Euclidean Einstein-Maxwell theory with a non-vanishing cosmological constant, and for which the Maxwell field strength is neither self-dual or anti-self-dual. We find that there are three classes of solutions, depending on the sign of the Maxwell field strength and cosmological constant terms in the Einstein equations which arise from the integrability conditions of the Killing spinor equation. The first class is a Euclidean version of a Lorentzian supersymmetric solution found in arXiv:0804.0009, hep-th/0406238 . The second class is constructed from a three dimensional base space which admits a hyper-CR Einstein-Weyl structure. The third class is the Euclidean Kastor-Traschen solution.

Cosmological Einstein-Maxwell Instantons and Euclidean Supersymmetry: Anti-Self-Dual Solutions

We classify super-symmetric solutions of the minimal $N=2$ gauged Euclidean supergravity in four dimensions. The solutions with anti-self-dual Maxwell field give rise to anti-self-dual Einstein metrics given in terms of solutions to the $SU(\infty)$ Toda equation and more general three-dimensional Einstein--Weyl structures. Euclidean Kastor--Traschen metrics are also characterised by the existence of a certain super covariantly constant spinor.

On asymptotically flat solutions of Einstein's equations periodic in time II. Spacetimes with scalar-field sources

We extend the work in our earlier article [4] to show that time-periodic, asymptotically-flat solutions of the Einstein equations analytic at scri, whose source is one of a range of scalar-field models, are necessarily stationary. We also show that, for some of these scalar-field sources, in stationary, asymptotically-flat solutions analytic at scri, the scalar field necessarily inherits the symmetry. To prove these results we investigate miscellaneous properties of massless and conformal scalar fields coupled to gravity, in particular Bondi mass and its loss.

Formation of Higher-dimensional Topological Black Holes

We study higher dimensional gravitational collapse to topological black holes in two steps. Firstly, we construct some (n+2)-dimensional collapsing space-times, which include generalised Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi-like solutions, and we prove that these can be matched to static $Λ$-vacuum exterior space-times. We then investigate the global properties of the matched solutions which, besides black holes, may include the existence of naked singularities and wormholes. Secondly, we consider as interiors classes of 5-dimensional collapsing solutions built on Riemannian Bianchi IX spatial metrics matched to radiating exteriors given by the Bizon-Chmaj-Schmidt metric. In some cases, the data at the boundary for the exterior can be chosen to be close to the data for the Schwarzschild solution.

Four--Dimensional Metrics Conformal to Kahler

We derive some necessary conditions on a Riemannian metric $(M, g)$ in four dimensions for it to be locally conformal to Kähler. If the conformal curvature is non anti--self--dual, the self--dual Weyl spinor must be of algebraic type $D$ and satisfy a simple first order conformally invariant condition which is necessary and sufficient for the existence of a Kähler metric in the conformal class. In the anti--self--dual case we establish a one to one correspondence between Kähler metrics in the conformal class and non--zero parallel sections of a certain connection on a natural rank ten vector bundle over $M$. We use this characterisation to provide examples of ASD metrics which are not conformal to Kähler. We establish a link between the `conformal to Kähler condition' in dimension four and the metrisability of projective structures in dimension two. A projective structure on a surface $U$ is metrisable if and only if the induced (2, 2) conformal structure on $M=TU$ admits a Kähler metric or a para-Kähler metric.

Matching of spatially homogeneous non-stationary space--times to vacuum in cylindrical symmetry

We study the matching of LRS spatially homogeneous collapsing dust space-times with non-stationary vacuum exteriors in cylindrical symmetry. Given an interior with diagonal metric we prove existence and uniqueness results for the exterior. The matched solutions contain trapped surfaces, singularities and Cauchy horizons. The solutions cannot be asymptotically flat and we present evidence that they are singular on the Cauchy horizons.

Linking, Legendrian linking and causality

The set N of all null geodesics of a globally hyperbolic (d+1)-dimensional spacetime (M,g) is naturally a smooth (2d-1)-dimensional contact manifold. The sky of an event is the subset of N defined by all null geodesics through that event, and is an embedded Legendrian submanifold of N diffeomorphic to a (d-1)-dimensional sphere. It was conjectured by Low that for d=2 two events are causally related iff their skies are linked (in an appropriate sense). We use the contact structure and knot polynomial calculations to prove this conjecture in certain particular cases, and suggest that for d=3 smooth linking should be replaced with Legendrian linking.
