Test fields cannot destroy extremal black holes

We prove that (possibly charged) test fields satisfying the null energy condition at the event horizon cannot overspin/overcharge extremal Kerr-Newman or Kerr-Newman-anti de Sitter black holes, that is, the weak cosmic censorship conjecture cannot be violated in the test field approximation. The argument relies on black hole thermodynamics (without assuming cosmic censorship), and does not depend on the precise nature of the fields. We also discuss generalizations of this result to other extremal black holes.

Painleve-Gullstrand Coordinates for the Kerr Solution

We construct a coordinate system for the Kerr solution, based on the zero angular momentum observers dropped from infinity, which generalizes the Painleve-Gullstrand coordinate system for the Schwarzschild solution. The Kerr metric can then be interpreted as describing space flowing on a (curved) Riemannian 3-manifold. The stationary limit arises as the set of points on this manifold where the speed of the flow equals the speed of light, and the horizons as the set of points where the radial speed equals the speed of light. A deeper analysis of what is meant by the flow of space reveals that the acceleration of free-falling objects is generally not in the direction of this flow. Finally, we compare the new coordinate system with the closely related Doran coordinate system.

A Minkowski-type inequality for convex surfaces in the hyperbolic 3-space

In this note we derive a new Minkowski-type inequality for closed convex surfaces in the hyperbolic 3-space. The inequality is obtained by explicitly computing the area of the family of surfaces obtained from the normal flow and then applying the isoperimetric inequality. Using the same method, we also we give elementary proofs of the classical Minkowski inequalities for closed convex surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space and in the 3-sphere.

The problem of a self-gravitating scalar field with positive cosmological constant

We study the Einstein-scalar field system with positive cosmological constant and spherically symmetric characteristic initial data given on a truncated null cone. We prove well-posedness, global existence and exponential decay in (Bondi) time, for small data. From this, it follows that initial data close enough to de Sitter data evolves to a causally geodesically complete spacetime (with boundary), which approaches a region of de Sitter asymptotically at an exponential rate; this is a non-linear stability result for de Sitter within the class under consideration, as well as a realization of the cosmic no-hair conjecture.

Linking and causality in (2+1)-dimensional static spacetimes

Given a (d+1)-dimensional spacetime (M,g), one can consider the set N of all its null geodesics. If (M,g) is globally hyperbolic then this set is naturally a smooth (2d-1)-manifold. The sky of an event x in M is the set X of all null geodesics through x, and is an embedded submanifold of N diffeomorphic to S^{d-1}. Low conjectured that if d=2 then x,y are causally related in M iff X,Y are linked in N. We prove Low's conjecture for a (large) class of static spacetimes.

Spherical linear waves in de Sitter spacetime

We apply Christodoulou's framework, developed to study the Einstein-scalar field equations in spherical symmetry, to the linear wave equation in de Sitter spacetime, as a first step towards the Einstein-scalar field equations with positive cosmological constant. We obtain an integro-differential evolution equation which we solve by taking initial data on a null cone. As a corollary we obtain elementary derivations of expected properties of linear waves in de Sitter spacetime: boundedness in terms of (characteristic) initial data, and a Price law establishing uniform exponential decay, in Bondi time, to a constant.

An elementary derivation of the Montgomery phase formula for the Euler top

We give an elementary derivation of the Montgomery phase formula for the motion of an Euler top, using only basic facts about the Euler equation and parallel transport on the 2-sphere (whose holonomy is seen to be responsible for the geometric phase). We also give an approximate geometric interpretation of the geometric phase for motions starting close to an unstable equilibrium point.

Optimal time travel in the Godel universe

Using the theory of optimal rocket trajectories in general relativity, recently developed in arXiv:1105.5235, we present a candidate for the minimum total integrated acceleration closed timelike curve in the Godel universe, and give evidence for its minimality. The total integrated acceleration of this curve is lower than Malament's conjectured value (Malament, 1984), as was already implicit in the work of Manchak (Manchak, 2011); however, Malament's conjecture does seem to hold for periodic closed timelike curves.

Formation of Higher-dimensional Topological Black Holes

We study higher dimensional gravitational collapse to topological black holes in two steps. Firstly, we construct some (n+2)-dimensional collapsing space-times, which include generalised Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi-like solutions, and we prove that these can be matched to static $Λ$-vacuum exterior space-times. We then investigate the global properties of the matched solutions which, besides black holes, may include the existence of naked singularities and wormholes. Secondly, we consider as interiors classes of 5-dimensional collapsing solutions built on Riemannian Bianchi IX spatial metrics matched to radiating exteriors given by the Bizon-Chmaj-Schmidt metric. In some cases, the data at the boundary for the exterior can be chosen to be close to the data for the Schwarzschild solution.

Greybody Factors for d-Dimensional Black Holes

Gravitational greybody factors are analytically computed for static, spherically symmetric black holes in d-dimensions, including black holes with charge and in the presence of a cosmological constant (where a proper definition of greybody factors for both asymptotically dS and AdS spacetimes is provided). This calculation includes both the low-energy case --where the frequency of the scattered wave is small and real-- and the asymptotic case --where the frequency of the scattered wave is very large along the imaginary axis-- addressing gravitational perturbations as described by the Ishibashi-Kodama master equations, and yielding full transmission and reflection scattering coefficients for all considered spacetime geometries. At low frequencies a general method is developed, which can be employed for all three types of spacetime asymptotics, and which is independent of the details of the black hole. For asymptotically dS black holes the greybody factor is different for even or odd spacetime dimension, and proportional to the ratio of the areas of the event and cosmological horizons. For asymptotically AdS black holes the greybody factor has a rich structure in which there are several critical frequencies where it equals either one (pure transmission) or zero (pure reflection, with these frequencies corresponding to the normal modes of pure AdS spacetime). At asymptotic frequencies the computation of the greybody factor uses a technique inspired by monodromy matching, and some universality is hidden in the transmission and reflection coefficients. For either charged or asymptotically dS black holes the greybody factors are given by non-trivial functions, while for asymptotically AdS black holes the greybody factor precisely equals one (corresponding to pure blackbody emission).

On the Classification of Asymptotic Quasinormal Frequencies for d-Dimensional Black Holes and Quantum Gravity

We provide a complete classification of asymptotic quasinormal frequencies for static, spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes in d dimensions. This includes all possible types of gravitational perturbations (tensor, vector and scalar type) as described by the Ishibashi-Kodama master equations. The frequencies for Schwarzschild are dimension independent, while for RN are dimension dependent (the extremal RN case must be considered separately from the non-extremal case). For Schwarzschild dS, there is a dimension independent formula for the frequencies, except in dimension d=5 where the formula is different. For RN dS there is a dimension dependent formula for the frequencies, except in dimension d=5 where the formula is different. Schwarzschild and RN AdS black hole spacetimes are simpler: the formulae for the frequencies will depend upon a parameter related to the tortoise coordinate at spatial infinity, and scalar type perturbations in dimension d=5 lead to a continuous spectrum for the quasinormal frequencies. We also address non-black hole spacetimes, such as pure dS spacetime--where there are quasinormal modes only in odd dimensions--and pure AdS spacetime--where again scalar type perturbations in dimension d=5 lead to a continuous spectrum for the normal frequencies. Our results match previous numerical calculations with great accuracy. Asymptotic quasinormal frequencies have also been applied in the framework of quantum gravity for black holes. Our results show that it is only in the simple Schwarzschild case which is possible to obtain sensible results concerning area quantization or loop quantum gravity. In an effort to keep this paper self-contained we also review earlier results in the literature.

Asymptotic Quasinormal Frequencies for Black Holes in Non-Asymptotically Flat Spacetimes

The exact computation of asymptotic quasinormal frequencies is a technical problem which involves the analytic continuation of a Schrodinger-like equation to the complex plane and then performing a method of monodromy matching at the several poles in the plane. While this method was successfully used in asymptotically flat spacetime, as applied to both the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom solutions, its extension to non-asymptotically flat spacetimes has not been achieved yet. In this work it is shown how to extend the method to this case, with the explicit analysis of Schwarzschild de Sitter and large Schwarzschild Anti-de Sitter black holes, both in four dimensions. We obtain, for the first time, analytic expressions for the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies of these black hole spacetimes, and our results match previous numerical calculations with great accuracy. We also list some results concerning the general classification of asymptotic quasinormal frequencies in d-dimensional spacetimes.

Linking, Legendrian linking and causality

The set N of all null geodesics of a globally hyperbolic (d+1)-dimensional spacetime (M,g) is naturally a smooth (2d-1)-dimensional contact manifold. The sky of an event is the subset of N defined by all null geodesics through that event, and is an embedded Legendrian submanifold of N diffeomorphic to a (d-1)-dimensional sphere. It was conjectured by Low that for d=2 two events are causally related iff their skies are linked (in an appropriate sense). We use the contact structure and knot polynomial calculations to prove this conjecture in certain particular cases, and suggest that for d=3 smooth linking should be replaced with Legendrian linking.
