Five-Dimensional Path Integrals for Six-Dimensional Conformal Field Theories

In this paper we derive Ward-Takahashi identities from the path integral of supersymmetric five-dimensional field theories with an $SU(1,3)$ spacetime symmetry in the presence of instantons. We explicitly show how $SU(1,3)$ is enhanced to $SU(1,3)\times U(1)$ where the additional $U(1)$ acts non-perturbatively. Solutions to such Ward-Takahashi identities were previously obtained from correlators of six-dimensional Lorentzian conformal field theories but where the instanton number was replaced by the momentum along a null direction. Here we study the reverse procedure whereby we construct correlation functions out of towers of five-dimensional operators which satisfy the Ward-Takahashi identities of a six-dimensional conformal field theory. This paves the way to computing observables in six dimensions using five-dimensional path integral techniques. We also argue that, once the instanton sector is included into the path integral, the coupling of the five-dimensional Lagrangian must be quantised, leaving no free continuous parameters.

Instanton Worldlines in Five-Dimensional $Ω$-Deformed Gauge Theory

We discuss the Bosonic sector of a class of supersymmetric non-Lorentzian five-dimensional gauge field theories with an $SU(1,3)$ conformal symmetry. These actions have a Lagrange multiplier which imposes a novel $Ω$-deformed anti-self-dual gauge field constraint. Using a generalised 't Hooft ansatz we find the constraint equation linearizes allowing us to construct a wide class of explicit solutions. These include finite action configurations that describe worldlines of anti-instantons which can be created and annihilated. We also describe the dynamics on the constraint surface.

AdS$_7$ Black-Hole Entropy and 5D $\mathcal{N}=2$ Yang-Mills

We generalise the work of 1810.11442 for the case of AdS$_7$/CFT$_6$. Starting from the 2-equivalent charge, 3-equivalent rotation non-extremal black-hole solution in 7D gauged supergravity, we consider the supersymmetric and then the extremal limit and evaluate the associated thermodynamic quantities. Away from extremality, the black-hole solution becomes complex. The entropy is then given by the Legendre transform of the on-shell action with respect to two complex chemical potentials subject to a constraint. At the conformal boundary we derive the dual background and evaluate the corresponding partition function for the $A_{N-1}$ 6D (2,0) theory at large $N$ in a Cardy-like limit. This is carried out via a 5D $\mathcal N=2$ super Yang-Mills calculation on $S^5$. The gravitational on-shell action is found to be exactly reproduced by the boundary partition function at large $N$. We argue that this agreement puts strong constraints on the form of possible higher-derivative corrections to the 5D gauge theory that is used in the $S^5$ evaluation.

Agent-based modelling of pedestrian responses during flood emergency: mobility behavioural rules and implications for flood risk analysis

An agent-based model (ABM) for simulating flood-pedestrian interaction is augmented to particularly explore more realistic responses of evacuating pedestrians during flooding. Pedestrian agents within the ABM follow navigation rules of governing their movement in dry areas. When in floodwater, pedestrian agents are assigned extra behavioural rules to factor in their states of stability and walking speed, and their different body height and weight. The ABM is applied to replicate a synthetic test case of a flooded shopping centre, considering increasingly sophisticated configuration modes for the behavioural rules of the evacuating pedestrians. Simulation results are analysed based on spatial and temporal indicators informing on the dynamic variations of flood risk states of flooded pedestrians in terms of a commonly used flood Hazard Rating (HR) metric, variable walking speed, and instability due to toppling and/or sliding. Our analysis reveal significantly prolonged evacuation times and risk exposure levels as stability and walking speed behavioural rules become more sophisticated. It also allows to identify more conservative HR thresholds due to unstable pedestrians, and a new formula to directly estimate walking speed states as function of HR for stable pedestrian in floodwater. Accompanying details for software accessibility are provided.

Agent-based simulator of dynamic flood-people interactions

This paper presents a new simulator for dynamic modelling of interactions between flooding and people in crowded areas. The simulator is developed in FLAMEGPU (a Flexible Large scale Agent-based Modelling Environment for the GPU), which allows to model multiple agent interactions while benefitting from the speed-up of GPUs. Flooding variables including terrain data are represented by a hydrodynamic Agent-Based Model (ABM) that is based on a non-sequential implementation of a robust Finite Volume (FV) solver of the Shallow Water Equations (SWEs). People movements are represented by a pedestrian ABM adopting force-based walking rules. The hydrodynamic ABM is coupled to the pedestrian ABM according to risk-to-life thresholds reported by the UK Environment Agency (EA). A hypothetical case study of a crowded shopping centre is proposed and used to assess the dynamic coupling ability of the simulator. Flooding into the shopping centre is induced based on realistic inflow conditions, and the simulator is applied considering two scenarios: evacuation without advanced warning and intervention with an advanced warning of 12 hours. Results show that the simulator can produce detailed statistics of spatiotemporal people states during evacuation, and is useful to plan safe and effective people intervention to deploy a sandbag-based temporary barriers.

Boundary Conditions in Topological AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$

We revisit the construction in four-dimensional gauged $Spin(4)$ supergravity of the holographic duals to topologically twisted three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ field theories. Our focus in this paper is to highlight some subtleties related to preserving supersymmetry in AdS/CFT, namely the inclusion of finite counterterms and the necessity of a Legendre transformation to find the dual to the field theory generating functional. Studying the geometry of these supergravity solutions, we conclude that the gravitational free energy is indeed independent from the metric of the boundary, and it vanishes for any smooth solution.

Simulating Crowds and Autonomous Vehicles

Understanding how people view and interact with autonomous vehicles is important to guide future directions of research. One such way of aiding understanding is through simulations of virtual environments involving people and autonomous vehicles. We present a simulation model that incorporates people and autonomous vehicles in a shared urban space. The model is able to simulate many thousands of people and vehicles in real-time. This is achieved by use of GPU hardware, and through a novel linear program solver optimized for large numbers of problems on the GPU. The model is up to 30 times faster than the equivalent multi-core CPU model.

Supersymmetric solutions to Euclidean Romans supergravity

We study Euclidean Romans supergravity in six dimensions with a non-trivial Abelian R-symmetry gauge field. We show that supersymmetric solutions are in one-to-one correspondence with solutions to a set of differential constraints on an SU(2) structure. As an application of our results we (i) show that this structure reduces at a conformal boundary to the five-dimensional rigid supersymmetric geometry previously studied by the authors, (ii) find a general expression for the holographic dual of the VEV of a BPS Wilson loop, matching an exact field theory computation, (iii) construct holographic duals to squashed Sasaki-Einstein backgrounds, again matching to a field theory computation, and (iv) find new analytic solutions.

Supersymmetric gauge theories on five-manifolds

We construct rigid supersymmetric gauge theories on Riemannian five-manifolds. We follow a holographic approach, realizing the manifold as the conformal boundary of a six-dimensional bulk supergravity solution. This leads to a systematic classification of five-dimensional supersymmetric backgrounds with gravity duals. We show that the background metric is furnished with a conformal Killing vector, which generates a transversely holomorphic foliation with a transverse Hermitian structure. Moreover, we prove that any such metric defines a supersymmetric background. Finally, we construct supersymmetric Lagrangians for gauge theories coupled to arbitrary matter on such backgrounds.

Supersymmetric gauge theories on squashed five-spheres and their gravity duals

We construct the gravity duals of large N supersymmetric gauge theories defined on squashed five-spheres with SU(3) x U(1) symmetry. These five-sphere backgrounds are continuously connected to the round sphere, and we find a one-parameter family of 3/4 BPS deformations and a two-parameter family of (generically) 1/4 BPS deformations. The gravity duals are constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplift to massive type IIA supergravity. We holographically renormalize the Romans theory, and use our general result to compute the renormalized on-shell actions for the solutions. The results agree perfectly with the large N limit of the dual gauge theory partition function, which we compute using large N matrix model techniques. In addition we compute BPS Wilson loops in these backgrounds, both in supergravity and in the large N matrix model, again finding precise agreement. Finally, we conjecture a general formula for the partition function on any five-sphere background, which for fixed gauge theory depends only on a certain supersymmetric Killing vector.

The gravity dual of supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed five-sphere

We present the gravity dual of large N supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed five-sphere. The one-parameter family of solutions is constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplifts to massive type IIA supergravity. By renormalizing the theory with appropriate counterterms we evaluate the renormalized on-shell action for the solutions. We also evaluate the large N limit of the gauge theory partition function, and find precise agreement.

The holographic supersymmetric Renyi entropy in five dimensions

We compute the supersymmetric Renyi entropy across an entangling three-sphere for five-dimensional superconformal field theories using localization. For a class of USp(2N) gauge theories we construct a holographic dual 1/2 BPS black hole solution of Euclidean Romans F(4) supergravity. The large N limit of the gauge theory results agree perfectly with the supergravity computations.

The superconformal index and an elliptic algebra of surface defects

In this paper we continue the study of the superconformal index of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ in the presence of surface defects. Our main result is the construction of an algebra of difference operators, whose elements are labeled by irreducible representations of $A_{N-1}$. For the fully antisymmetric tensor representations these difference operators are the Hamiltonians of the elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider system. The structure constants of the algebra are elliptic generalizations of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In the Macdonald limit, we identify the difference operators with local operators in the two-dimensional TQFT interpretation of the superconformal index. We also study the dimensional reduction to difference operators acting on the three-sphere partition function, where they characterize supersymmetric defects supported on a circle, and show that they are transformed to supersymmetric Wilson loops under mirror symmetry. Finally, we compare to the difference operators that create 't Hooft loops in the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ theory on a four-sphere by embedding the three-dimensional theory as an S-duality domain wall.

Localization on Three-Manifolds

We consider supersymmetric gauge theories on Riemannian three-manifolds with the topology of a three-sphere. The three-manifold is always equipped with an almost contact structure and an associated Reeb vector field. We show that the partition function depends only on this vector field, giving an explicit expression in terms of the double sine function. In the large N limit our formula agrees with a recently discovered two-parameter family of dual supergravity solutions. We also explain how our results may be applied to prove vortex-antivortex factorization. Finally, we comment on the extension of our results to three-manifolds with non-trivial fundamental group.

(2,0) Supersymmetry and the Light-Cone Description of M5-branes

In 1007.2982 a novel system of equations which propagate in one null and four space directions were obtained as the on-shell conditions for the six-dimensional (2,0) superalgebra. In this paper we show how this system reduces to one-dimensional motion on instanton moduli space. Quantization leads to the previous light-cone proposal of the (2,0) theory, generalized to include a potential that arises on the Coulomb branch as well as couplings to background gauge and self-dual two-form fields.

Higher Derivative BLG: Lagrangian and Supersymmetry Transformations

Working to lowest non-trivial order in fermions, we consider the four-derivative order corrected Lagrangian and supersymmetry transformations of the Euclidean Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory. By demonstrating supersymmetric invariance of the Lagrangian we determine all numerical coefficients in the system. In addition, the supersymmetry algebra is shown to close on the scalar and gauge fields. We also comment on the extension to Lorentzian and other non-Euclidean $\mathcal{N}=8$ 3-algebra theories.

Multiple M-branes and 3-algebras

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the properties of multiple coincident M2- and M5-branes. We begin with a review of the BLG and ABJM models of multiple M2-branes and our focus will be on their formulation in terms of 3-algebras. We then examine the coupling of multiple M2-branes to the background 3-form and 6-form gauge fields of eleven-dimensional supergravity. In particular we show in detail how a natural generalisation of the Myers flux-terms, along with the resulting curvature of the background metric, leads to mass terms in the effective field theory. Working to lowest nontrivial order in fermions, we demonstrate the supersymmetric invariance of the four-derivative order corrected Lagrangian of the Euclidean BLG theory and determine the theory's higher derivative corrected supersymmetry transformations. The supersymmetry algebra is also shown to close on the scalar and gauge fields. We also consider periodic arrays of M2-branes in the ABJM model in the spirit of a circle compactification to D2-branes in type IIA string theory. The result is a curious formulation of three-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Upon further T-duality on a transverse torus we obtain a non-manifest-Lorentz-invariant description of five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills which can be viewed as an M-theory description of M5-branes on $\mathbb{T}^3$. After reviewing work to describe multiple M5-branes using 3-algebras we show how the resulting novel system of equations reduces to one-dimensional motion on instanton moduli space. Quantisation leads to the previous light-cone proposal of the (2,0) theory, generalised to include a potential that arises on the Coulomb branch as well as couplings to background gauge and self-dual 2-form fields.

Periodic Arrays of M2-Branes

We consider periodic arrays of M2-branes in the ABJM model in the spirit of a circle compactification to D2-branes in type IIA string theory. The result is a curious formulation of three-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in terms of fermions, seven transverse scalars, a non-dynamical gauge field and an additional scalar `dual gluon'. Upon further T-duality on a transverse torus we obtain a non-manifest-Lorentz-invariant description of five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills. Here the additional scalar field can be thought of as the components of a two-form along the torus. This action can be viewed as an M-theory description of M5-branes on ${\mathbb T}^3$.
