IIB an equivariantly localized puncture

We use equivariant localization to compute various observables for $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ preserving AdS$_3$ solutions in type IIB supergravity. Our method for localizing the odd-dimensional internal space is to perform a dimensional reduction along a shrinking circle which introduces a boundary in the remaining even-dimensional spacetime. Canonical even-dimensional localization can then be performed on this space after taking into account contributions from the boundary. We illustrate with a number of supersymmetric solutions. One of the novel aspects of this work is applying these techniques to study punctures and defects using localization. We obtain new results for the central charge of 2d SCFTs arising from compactifying $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM on a punctured Riemann surface.

M5-branes wrapped on four-dimensional orbifolds

We construct supersymmetric $AdS_3$ solutions of $D=11$ supergravity, dual to $d=2$, $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ SCFTs, that are associated with M5-branes wrapping two different four-dimensional orbifolds. In one case the orbifold is a spindle fibred over another spindle, while in the other it is a spindle fibred over a Riemann surface with genus $g>1$. We show that the central charges of the $d=2$ SCFTs calculated from the gravity solutions agree with field theory computations using anomaly polynomials. The new $D=11$ solutions are obtained after constructing a new consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation of maximal $D=7$ gauged supergravity reduced on a spindle down to $D=5$ minimal gauged supergravity.

Multi-charge accelerating black holes and spinning spindles

We construct a family of multi-dyonically charged and rotating supersymmetric AdS$_2\times Σ$ solutions of $D=4$, $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauged supergravity, where $Σ$ is a sphere with two conical singularities known as a spindle. We argue that these arise as near horizon limits of extremal dyonically charged rotating and accelerating supersymmetric black holes in AdS$_4$, that we conjecture to exist. We demonstrate this in the non-rotating limit, constructing the accelerating black hole solutions and showing that the non-spinning spindle solutions arise as the near horizon limit of the supersymmetric and extremal sub-class of these black holes. From the near horizon solutions we compute the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black holes as a function of the conserved charges, and show that this may equivalently be obtained by extremizing a simple entropy function. For appropriately quantized magnetic fluxes, the solutions uplift on $S^7$, or its ${\cal N}=4$ orbifolds $S^7/Γ$, to smooth supersymmetric solutions to $D=11$ supergravity, where the entropy is expected to count microstates of the theory on $N$ M2-branes wrapped on a spinning spindle, in the large $N$ limit.

Supersymmetric spindles

In the context of holography, we analyse aspects of supersymmetric geometries based on two-dimensional orbifolds known as spindles. By analysing spin$^c$ spinors on a spindle with an azimuthal rotation symmetry we show that under rather general conditions there are just two possibilities, called the `twist' and the `anti-twist', which are determined by the quantized magnetic flux through the spindle. A special case of the twist is the standard topological twist which is associated with constant and chiral spinors. We construct solutions of $D=5$ and $D=4$ STU gauged supergravity theories that are dual to D3-branes and M2-branes wrapping spindles, respectively, which realize both the anti-twist, as seen before, but also the twist. For the wrapped D3-brane solutions we reproduce the central charge of the gravity solution from the dual field theory by analysing the anomaly polynomial of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory. We also discuss M5-branes wrapped on spindles both from a gravity and a field theory point of view.

$\mathcal{I}$/$c$-Extremization in M/F-Duality

We study the holographic dual to $c$-extremization for 2d $(0,2)$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) that have an AdS$_3$ dual realized in Type IIB with varying axio-dilaton, i.e. F-theory. M/F-duality implies that such AdS$_3$ solutions can be mapped to AdS$_2$ solutions in M-theory, which are holographically dual to superconformal quantum mechanics (SCQM), obtained by dimensional reduction of the 2d SCFTs. We analyze the corresponding map between holographic $c$-extremization in F-theory and $\mathcal{I}$-extremization in M-theory, where in general the latter receives corrections relative to the F-theory result.

"Lagrangian Disks" in M-theory

While the study of bordered (pseudo-)holomorphic curves with boundary on Lagrangian submanifolds has a long history, a similar problem that involves (special) Lagrangian submanifolds with boundary on complex surfaces appears to be largely overlooked in both physics and math literature. We relate this problem to geometry of coassociative submanifolds in $G_2$ holonomy spaces and to $Spin(7)$ metrics on 8-manifolds with $T^2$ fibrations. As an application to physics, we propose a large class of brane models in type IIA string theory that generalize brane brick models on the one hand and 2d theories $T[M_4]$ on the other.

Fibred GK geometry and supersymmetric $AdS$ solutions

We continue our study of a general class of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $AdS_3\times Y_7$ and $AdS_2\times Y_9$ solutions of type IIB and $D=11$ supergravity, respectively. The geometry of the internal spaces is part of a general family of "GK geometries", $Y_{2n+1}$, $n\ge 3$, and here we study examples in which $Y_{2n+1}$ fibres over a Kähler base manifold $B_{2k}$, with toric fibres. We show that the flux quantization conditions, and an action function that determines the supersymmetric $R$-symmetry Killing vector of a geometry, may all be written in terms of the "master volume" of the fibre, together with certain global data associated with the Kähler base. In particular, this allows one to compute the central charge and entropy of the holographically dual $(0,2)$ SCFT and dual superconformal quantum mechanics, respectively, without knowing the explicit form of the $Y_7$ or $Y_9$ geometry. We illustrate with a number of examples, finding agreement with explicit supergravity solutions in cases where these are known, and we also obtain new results. In addition we present, en passant, new formulae for calculating the volumes of Sasaki-Einstein manifolds.

D2-brane Chern-Simons theories: F-maximization = a-maximization

We study a system of N D2-branes probing a generic Calabi-Yau three-fold singularity in the presence of a non-zero quantized Romans mass n. We argue that the low-energy effective N = 2 Chern-Simons quiver gauge theory flows to a superconformal fixed point in the IR, and construct the dual AdS_4 solution in massive IIA supergravity. We compute the free energy F of the gauge theory on S^3 using localization. In the large N limit we find F = c(nN)^{1/3}a^{2/3}, where c is a universal constant and a is the a-function of the "parent" four-dimensional N = 1 theory on N D3-branes probing the same Calabi-Yau singularity. It follows that maximizing F over the space of admissible R-symmetries is equivalent to maximizing a for this class of theories. Moreover, we show that the gauge theory result precisely matches the holographic free energy of the supergravity solution, and provide a similar matching of the VEV of a BPS Wilson loop operator.

Gravity duals of supersymmetric gauge theories on three-manifolds

We study gravity duals to a broad class of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories defined on a general class of three-manifold geometries. The gravity backgrounds are based on Euclidean self-dual solutions to four-dimensional gauged supergravity. As well as constructing new examples, we prove in general that for solutions defined on the four-ball the gravitational free energy depends only on the supersymmetric Killing vector, finding a simple closed formula when the solution has U(1) x U(1) symmetry. Our result agrees with the large N limit of the free energy of the dual gauge theory, computed using localization. This constitutes an exact check of the gauge/gravity correspondence for a very broad class of gauge theories with a large N limit, defined on a general class of background three-manifold geometries.

Supersymmetric solutions to Euclidean Romans supergravity

We study Euclidean Romans supergravity in six dimensions with a non-trivial Abelian R-symmetry gauge field. We show that supersymmetric solutions are in one-to-one correspondence with solutions to a set of differential constraints on an SU(2) structure. As an application of our results we (i) show that this structure reduces at a conformal boundary to the five-dimensional rigid supersymmetric geometry previously studied by the authors, (ii) find a general expression for the holographic dual of the VEV of a BPS Wilson loop, matching an exact field theory computation, (iii) construct holographic duals to squashed Sasaki-Einstein backgrounds, again matching to a field theory computation, and (iv) find new analytic solutions.

The character of the supersymmetric Casimir energy

We study the supersymmetric Casimir energy $E_\mathrm{susy}$ of $\mathcal{N}=1$ field theories with an R-symmetry, defined on rigid supersymmetric backgrounds $S^1\times M_3$, using a Hamiltonian formalism. These backgrounds admit an ambi-Hermitian geometry, and we show that the net contributions to $E_\mathrm{susy}$ arise from certain twisted holomorphic modes on $\mathbb{R}\times M_3$, with respect to both complex structures. The supersymmetric Casimir energy may then be identified as a limit of an index-character that counts these modes. In particular this explains a recent observation relating $E_\mathrm{susy}$ on $S^1\times S^3$ to the anomaly polynomial. As further applications we compute $E_\mathrm{susy}$ for certain secondary Hopf surfaces, and discuss how the index-character may also be used to compute generalized supersymmetric indices.

Supersymmetric gauge theories on five-manifolds

We construct rigid supersymmetric gauge theories on Riemannian five-manifolds. We follow a holographic approach, realizing the manifold as the conformal boundary of a six-dimensional bulk supergravity solution. This leads to a systematic classification of five-dimensional supersymmetric backgrounds with gravity duals. We show that the background metric is furnished with a conformal Killing vector, which generates a transversely holomorphic foliation with a transverse Hermitian structure. Moreover, we prove that any such metric defines a supersymmetric background. Finally, we construct supersymmetric Lagrangians for gauge theories coupled to arbitrary matter on such backgrounds.

Supersymmetric gauge theories on squashed five-spheres and their gravity duals

We construct the gravity duals of large N supersymmetric gauge theories defined on squashed five-spheres with SU(3) x U(1) symmetry. These five-sphere backgrounds are continuously connected to the round sphere, and we find a one-parameter family of 3/4 BPS deformations and a two-parameter family of (generically) 1/4 BPS deformations. The gravity duals are constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplift to massive type IIA supergravity. We holographically renormalize the Romans theory, and use our general result to compute the renormalized on-shell actions for the solutions. The results agree perfectly with the large N limit of the dual gauge theory partition function, which we compute using large N matrix model techniques. In addition we compute BPS Wilson loops in these backgrounds, both in supergravity and in the large N matrix model, again finding precise agreement. Finally, we conjecture a general formula for the partition function on any five-sphere background, which for fixed gauge theory depends only on a certain supersymmetric Killing vector.

The gravity dual of supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed five-sphere

We present the gravity dual of large N supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed five-sphere. The one-parameter family of solutions is constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplifts to massive type IIA supergravity. By renormalizing the theory with appropriate counterterms we evaluate the renormalized on-shell action for the solutions. We also evaluate the large N limit of the gauge theory partition function, and find precise agreement.

The holographic supersymmetric Renyi entropy in five dimensions

We compute the supersymmetric Renyi entropy across an entangling three-sphere for five-dimensional superconformal field theories using localization. For a class of USp(2N) gauge theories we construct a holographic dual 1/2 BPS black hole solution of Euclidean Romans F(4) supergravity. The large N limit of the gauge theory results agree perfectly with the supergravity computations.

Wilson loops and the geometry of matrix models in AdS_4/CFT_3

We study a general class of supersymmetric AdS_4 x Y_7 solutions of M-theory that have large N dual descriptions as N = 2 Chern-Simons-matter theories on S^3. The Hamiltonian function h_M for the M-theory circle, with respect to a certain contact structure on Y_7, plays an important role in the duality. We show that an M2-brane wrapping the M-theory circle, giving a fundamental string in AdS_4, is supersymmetric precisely at the critical points of h_M, and moreover the value of this function at the critical point determines the M2-brane action. Such a configuration determines the holographic dual of a BPS Wilson loop for a Hopf circle in S^3, and leads to an effective method for computing the Wilson loop on both sides of the correspondence in large classes of examples. We find agreement in all cases, including for several infinite families, and moreover we find that the image h_M(Y_7) determines the range of support of the eigenvalues in the dual large N matrix model, with the critical points of h_M mapping to points where the derivative of the eigenvalue density is discontinuous.

Wilson loops on three-manifolds and their M2-brane duals

We compute the large N limit of Wilson loop expectation values for a broad class of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories defined on a general class of background three-manifolds M_3, diffeomorphic to S^3. We find a simple closed formula which depends on the background geometry only through a certain supersymmetric Killing vector field. The supergravity dual of such a Wilson loop is an M2-brane wrapping the M-theory circle, together with a complex curve in a self-dual Einstein manifold M_4, whose conformal boundary is M_3. We show that the regularized action of this M2-brane also depends only on the supersymmetric Killing vector, precisely reproducing the large N field theory computation.

Localization on Three-Manifolds

We consider supersymmetric gauge theories on Riemannian three-manifolds with the topology of a three-sphere. The three-manifold is always equipped with an almost contact structure and an associated Reeb vector field. We show that the partition function depends only on this vector field, giving an explicit expression in terms of the double sine function. In the large N limit our formula agrees with a recently discovered two-parameter family of dual supergravity solutions. We also explain how our results may be applied to prove vortex-antivortex factorization. Finally, we comment on the extension of our results to three-manifolds with non-trivial fundamental group.

The supersymmetric NUTs and bolts of holography

We show that a given conformal boundary can have a rich and intricate space of supersymmetric supergravity solutions filling it, focusing on the case where this conformal boundary is a biaxially squashed Lens space. Generically we find that the biaxially squashed Lens space S^3/Z_p admits Taub-NUT-AdS fillings, with topology R^4/Z_p, as well as smooth Taub-Bolt-AdS fillings with non-trivial topology. We show that the Taub-NUT-AdS solutions always lift to solutions of M-theory, and correspondingly that the gravitational free energy then agrees with the large N limit of the dual field theory free energy, obtained from the localized partition function of a class of N=2 Chern-Simons-matter theories. However, the solutions of Taub-Bolt-AdS type only lift to M-theory for appropriate classes of internal manifold, meaning that these solutions exist only for corresponding classes of three-dimensional N=2 field theories.

N=2 supersymmetric AdS_4 solutions of M-theory

We analyse the most general N=2 supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity consisting of a warped product of four-dimensional anti-de-Sitter space with a seven-dimensional Riemannian manifold Y_7. We show that the necessary and sufficient conditions for supersymmetry can be phrased in terms of a local SU(2)-structure on Y_7. Solutions with non-zero M2-brane charge also admit a canonical contact structure, in terms of which many physical quantities can be expressed, including the free energy and the scaling dimensions of operators dual to supersymmetric wrapped M5-branes. We show that a special class of solutions is singled out by imposing an additional symmetry, for which the problem reduces to solving a second order non-linear ODE. As well as recovering a known class of solutions, that includes the IR fixed point of a mass deformation of the ABJM theory, we also find new solutions which are dual to cubic deformations. In particular, we find a new supersymmetric warped AdS_4 x S^7 solution with non-trivial four-form flux.

The gravity dual of supersymmetric gauge theories on a biaxially squashed three-sphere

We present the gravity dual to a class of three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on a biaxially squashed three-sphere, with a non-trivial background gauge field. This is described by a 1/2 BPS Euclidean solution of four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity, consisting of a Taub-NUT-AdS metric with a non-trivial instanton for the graviphoton field. The holographic free energy of this solution agrees precisely with the large N limit of the free energy obtained from the localized partition function of a class of Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories. We also discuss a different supersymmetric solution, whose boundary is a biaxially squashed Lens space S^3/Z_2 with a topologically non-trivial background gauge field. This metric is of Eguchi-Hanson-AdS type, although it is not Einstein, and has a single unit of gauge field flux through the S^2 cycle.

The gravity dual of supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed three-sphere

We present the gravity dual to a class of three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on a U(1) x U(1)-invariant squashed three-sphere, with a non-trivial background gauge field. This is described by a supersymmetric solution of four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity with a non-trivial instanton for the graviphoton field. The particular gauge theory in turn determines the lift to a solution of eleven-dimensional supergravity. We compute the partition function for a class of Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories on both sides of the duality, in the large N limit, finding precise agreement for the functional dependence on the squashing parameter. This constitutes an exact check of the gauge/gravity correspondence in a non-conformally invariant setting.

The large N limit of M2-branes on Lens spaces

We study the matrix model for N M2-branes wrapping a Lens space L(p,1) = S^3/Z_p. This arises from localization of the partition function of the ABJM theory, and has some novel features compared with the case of a three-sphere, including a sum over flat connections and a potential that depends non-trivially on p. We study the matrix model both numerically and analytically in the large N limit, finding that a certain family of p flat connections give an equal dominant contribution. At large N we find the same eigenvalue distribution for all p, and show that the free energy is simply 1/p times the free energy on a three-sphere, in agreement with gravity dual expectations.

Non-Kahler heterotic rotations

We study a supersymmetry-preserving solution-generating method in heterotic supergravity. In particular, we use this method to construct one-parameter non-Kahler deformations of Calabi-Yau manifolds with a U(1) isometry, in which the complex structure remains invariant. We explain how to obtain corresponding solutions to heterotic string theory, up to first order in α', by a modified form of the standard embedding. In the course of the paper we also show that Abelian heterotic supergravity embeds into type II supergravity, and note that the solution-generating method in this context is related to a dipole-type deformation when there is a field theory dual.

The free energy of N=2 supersymmetric AdS_4 solutions of M-theory

We show that general N=2 supersymmetric AdS_4 solutions of M-theory with non-zero M2-brane charge admit a canonical contact structure. The free energy of the dual superconformal field theory on S^3 and the scaling dimensions of operators dual to supersymmetric wrapped M5-branes are expressed via AdS/CFT in terms of contact volumes. In particular, this leads to topological and localization formulae for the coefficient of N^{3/2} in the free energy of such solutions.

The large N limit of quiver matrix models and Sasaki-Einstein manifolds

We study the matrix models that result from localization of the partition functions of N=2 Chern-Simons-matter theories on the three-sphere. A large class of such theories are conjectured to be holographically dual to M-theory on Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds. We study the M-theory limit (large N and fixed Chern-Simons levels) of these matrix models for various examples, and show that in this limit the free energy reproduces the expected AdS/CFT result of N^{3/2}/Vol(Y)^{1/2}, where Vol(Y) is the volume of the corresponding Sasaki-Einstein metric. More generally we conjecture a relation between the large N limit of the partition function, interpreted as a function of trial R-charges, and the volumes of Sasakian metrics on links of Calabi-Yau four-fold singularities. We verify this conjecture for a family of U(N)^2 Chern-Simons quivers based on M2 branes at hypersurface singularities, and for a U(N)^3 theory based on M2 branes at a toric singularity.

(Un)Higgsing the M2-brane

We study various aspects of N=2 quiver-Chern-Simons theories, conjectured to be dual to M2-branes at toric Calabi-Yau four-fold singularities, under Higgsing. In particular we study in detail the orbifold C^4/Z_2^3, obtaining a number of different quiver-Chern-Simons phases for this model, and all 18 toric partial resolutions thereof. In the process we develop a general un-Higgsing algorithm that allows one to construct quiver-Chern-Simons theories by blowing up, thus obtaining a plethora of new models. In addition we explain how turning on torsion G-flux non-trivially affects the supergravity dual of Higgsing, showing that the supergravity and field theory analyses precisely match in an example based on the Sasaki-Einstein manifold Y^(1,2)(CP^2).

AdS_5 Solutions of Type IIB Supergravity and Generalized Complex Geometry

We use the formalism of generalized geometry to study the generic supersymmetric AdS_5 solutions of type IIB supergravity that are dual to N=1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in d=4. Such solutions have an associated six-dimensional generalized complex cone geometry that is an extension of Calabi-Yau cone geometry. We identify generalized vector fields dual to the dilatation and R-symmetry of the dual SCFT and show that they are generalized holomorphic on the cone. We carry out a generalized reduction of the cone to a transverse four-dimensional space and show that this is also a generalized complex geometry, which is an extension of Kahler-Einstein geometry. Remarkably, provided the five-form flux is non-vanishing, the cone is symplectic. The symplectic structure can be used to obtain Duistermaat-Heckman type integrals for the central charge of the dual SCFT and the conformal dimensions of operators dual to BPS wrapped D3-branes. We illustrate these results using the Pilch-Warner solution.

Baryonic symmetries and M5 branes in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence

We study U(1) symmetries dual to Betti multiplets in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence for M2 branes at Calabi-Yau four-fold singularities. Analysis of the boundary conditions for vector fields in AdS_4 allows for a choice where wrapped M5 brane states carrying non-zero charge under such symmetries can be considered. We begin by focusing on isolated toric singularities without vanishing six-cycles, and study in detail the cone over Q^{111}. The boundary conditions considered are dual to a CFT where the gauge group is U(1)^2 x SU(N)^4. We find agreement between the spectrum of gauge-invariant baryonic-type operators in this theory and wrapped M5 brane states. Moreover, the physics of vacua in which these symmetries are spontaneously broken precisely matches a dual gravity analysis involving resolutions of the singularity, where we are able to match condensates of the baryonic operators, Goldstone bosons and global strings. We also argue more generally that theories where the resolutions have six-cycles are expected to receive non-perturbative corrections from M5 brane instantons. We give a general formula relating the instanton action to normalizable harmonic two-forms, and compute it explicitly for the Q^{222} example. The holographic interpretation of such instantons is currently unclear.

Generalized Geometry in AdS/CFT and Volume Minimization

We study the general structure of the AdS_5/CFT_4 correspondence in type IIB string theory from the perspective of generalized geometry. We begin by defining a notion of "generalized Sasakian geometry," which consists of a contact structure together with a differential system for three symplectic forms on the four-dimensional transverse space to the Reeb vector field. A generalized Sasakian manifold which satisfies an additional "Einstein" condition provides a general supersymmetric AdS_5 solution of type IIB supergravity with fluxes. We then show that the supergravity action restricted to a space of generalized Sasakian structures is simply the contact volume, and that its minimization determines the Reeb vector field for such a solution. We conjecture that this contact volume is equal to the inverse of the trial central charge whose maximization determines the R-symmetry of any four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theory. This variational procedure allows us to compute the contact volumes for a predicted infinite family of solutions, and we find perfect agreement with the central charges and R-charges of BPS operators in the dual mass-deformed generalized conifold theories.

AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1 Solutions of Type IIB String Theory

We analyse a recently constructed class of local solutions of type IIB supergravity that consist of a warped product of AdS_3 with a seven-dimensional internal space. In one duality frame the only other non-vanishing fields are the NS three-form and the dilaton. We analyse in detail how these local solutions can be extended to globally well-defined solutions of type IIB string theory, with the internal space having topology S^3 x S^3 x S^1 and with properly quantised three-form flux.

Notes on toric Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds and AdS_4/CFT_3

We study the geometry and topology of two infinite families Y^{p,k} of Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds, that are expected to be AdS_4/CFT_3 dual to families of N=2 superconformal field theories in three dimensions. These manifolds, labelled by two positive integers p and k, are Lens space bundles S^3/Z_p over CP^2 and CP^1 x CP^1, respectively. The corresponding Calabi-Yau cones are toric. We present their toric diagrams and gauged linear sigma model charges in terms of p and k, and find that the Y^{p,k} manifolds interpolate between certain orbifolds of the homogeneous spaces S^7, M^{3,2} and Q^{1,1,1}.

The Geometric Dual of a-maximisation for Toric Sasaki-Einstein Manifolds

We show that the Reeb vector, and hence in particular the volume, of a Sasaki-Einstein metric on the base of a toric Calabi-Yau cone of complex dimension n may be computed by minimising a function Z on R^n which depends only on the toric data that defines the singularity. In this way one can extract certain geometric information for a toric Sasaki-Einstein manifold without finding the metric explicitly. For complex dimension n=3 the Reeb vector and the volume correspond to the R-symmetry and the a central charge of the AdS/CFT dual superconformal field theory, respectively. We therefore interpret this extremal problem as the geometric dual of a-maximisation. We illustrate our results with some examples, including the Y^{p,q} singularities and the complex cone over the second del Pezzo surface.

G-Structures, Fluxes and Calibrations in M-Theory

We study the most general supersymmetric warped M-theory backgrounds with non-trivial G-flux of the type R^{1,2} x M_8 and AdS_3 x M_8. We give a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for preservation of supersymmetry which are phrased in terms of G-structures and their intrinsic torsion. These equations may be interpreted as calibration conditions for a static ``dyonic'' M-brane, that is, an M5-brane with self-dual three-form turned on. When the electric flux is turned off we obtain the supersymmetry conditions and non-linear PDEs describing M5-branes wrapped on associative and special Lagrangian three-cycles in manifolds with G_2 and SU(3) structures, respectively. As an illustration of our formalism, we recover the 1/2-BPS dyonic M-brane, and also construct some new examples.

Conifold Transitions and Five-Brane Condensation in M-Theory on Spin(7) Manifolds

We conjecture a topology changing transition in M-theory on a non-compact asymptotically conical Spin(7) manifold, where a 5-sphere collapses and a CP(2) bolt grows. We argue that the transition may be understood as the condensation of M5-branes wrapping the 5-sphere. Upon reduction to ten dimensions, it has a physical interpretation as a transition of D6-branes lying on calibrated submanifolds of flat space. In yet another guise, it may be seen as a geometric transition between two phases of type IIA string theory on a G_2 holonomy manifold with either wrapped D6-branes, or background Ramond-Ramond flux. This is the first non-trivial example of a topology changing transition with only 1/16 supersymmetry.
