Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{P}^1$ coupled to a KdV tau function

We consider the pull-back of a natural sequence of cohomology classes $Θ_{g,n}\in H^{2(2g-2+n)}(\overline{\cal M}_{g,n})$ to the moduli space of stable maps ${\cal M}^g_n(\mathbb{P}^1,d)$. These classes are related to the Brézin-Gross-Witten tau function of the KdV hierarchy via $Z^{BGW}(\hbar,t_0,t_1,...)=\exp\sum\frac{\hbar^{2g-2}}{n!}\int_{\overline{\cal M}_{g,n}}Θ_{g,n}\cdot\prod_{j=1}^nψ_j^{k_j}\prod t_{k_j}$. Insertions of the pull-backs of the classes $Θ_{g,n}$ into the integrals defining Gromov-Witten invariants define new invariants which we show in the case of target $\mathbb{P}^1$ are given by a random matrix integral and satisfy the Toda equation.

Topological recursion on the Bessel curve

The Witten-Kontsevich theorem states that a certain generating function for intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable curves is a tau-function for the KdV integrable hierarchy. This generating function can be recovered via the topological recursion applied to the Airy curve $x=\frac{1}{2}y^2$. In this paper, we consider the topological recursion applied to the irregular spectral curve $xy^2=\frac{1}{2}$, which we call the Bessel curve. We prove that the associated partition function is also a KdV tau-function, which satisfies Virasoro constraints, a cut-and-join type recursion, and a quantum curve equation. Together, the Airy and Bessel curves govern the local behaviour of all spectral curves with simple branch points.

Models of discretized moduli spaces, cohomological field theories, and Gaussian means

We prove combinatorially the explicit relation between genus filtrated $s$-loop means of the Gaussian matrix model and terms of the genus expansion of the Kontsevich--Penner matrix model (KPMM). The latter is the generating function for volumes of discretized (open) moduli spaces $M_{g,s}^{\mathrm{disc}}$ given by $N_{g,s}(P_1,\dots,P_s)$ for $(P_1,\dots,P_s)\in{\mathbb Z}_+^s$. This generating function therefore enjoys the topological recursion, and we prove that it is simultaneously the generating function for ancestor invariants of a cohomological field theory thus enjoying the Givental decomposition. We use another Givental-type decomposition obtained for this model by the second authors in 1995 in terms of special times related to the discretisation of moduli spaces thus representing its asymptotic expansion terms (and therefore those of the Gaussian means) as finite sums over graphs weighted by lower-order monomials in times thus giving another proof of (quasi)polynomiality of the discrete volumes. As an application, we find the coefficients in the first subleading order for ${\mathcal M}_{g,1}$ in two ways: using the refined Harer--Zagier recursion and by exploiting the above Givental-type transformation. We put forward the conjecture that the above graph expansions can be used for probing the reduction structure of the Delgne--Mumford compactification $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,s}$ of moduli spaces of punctured Riemann surfaces.

Quantum curves and topological recursion

This is a survey article describing the relationship between quantum curves and topological recursion. A quantum curve is a Schrödinger operator-like noncommutative analogue of a plane curve which encodes (quantum) enumerative invariants in a new and interesting way. The Schrödinger operator annihilates a wave function which can be constructed using the WKB method, and conjecturally constructed in a rather different way via topological recursion.

Topological recursion for Gaussian means and cohomological field theories

We use the explicit relation between genus filtrated $s$-loop means of the Gaussian matrix model and terms of the genus expansion of the Kontsevich--Penner matrix model (KPMM), which is the generating function for volumes of discretized (open) moduli spaces $M_{g,s}^{disc}$ (discrete volumes), to express Gaussian means in all genera as polynomials in special times weighted by ancestor invariants of an underlying cohomological field theory. We translate topological recursion of the Gaussian model into recurrent relations for coefficients of this expansion proving their integrality and positivity. As an application, we find the coefficients in the first subleading order for ${\mathcal M}_{g,1}$ for all $g$ in three ways: by using the refined Harer--Zagier recursion, by exploiting the Givental-type decomposition of KPMM, and by an explicit diagram counting.

Simple geodesics and Markoff quads

The action of the mapping class group of the thrice-punctured projective plane on its $\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ character variety produces an algorithm for generating the simple length spectra of quasi-Fuchsian thrice-punctured projective planes. We apply this algorithm to quasi-Fuchsian representations of the corresponding fundamental group to prove: a sharp upper-bound for the length of its shortest geodesic, a McShane identity and the surprising result of non-polynomial growth for the number of simple closed geodesic lengths.

Stationary Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces

We represent stationary descendant Gromov-Witten invariants of projective space, up to explicit combinatorial factors, by polynomials. One application gives the asymptotic behaviour of large degree behaviour of stationary descendant Gromov-Witten invariants in terms of intersection numbers over the moduli space of curves. We also show that primary Gromov-Witten invariants are "virtual" stationary descendants and hence the string and divisor equations can be understood purely in terms of stationary invariants.

Cell decompositions of moduli space, lattice points and Hurwitz problems

In this article we describe cell decompositions of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces and their relationship to a Hurwitz problem. The cells possess natural linear structures and with respect to this they can be described as rational convex polytopes which come equipped with natural integer points and a volume form. We show how to effectively calculate the number of lattice points and the volumes over all the cells and that these calculations contain deep information about the moduli space.

Counting lattice points in compactified moduli spaces of curves

We define and count lattice points in the moduli space of stable genus g curves with n labeled points. This extends a construction of the second author for the uncompactified moduli space. The enumeration produces polynomials with top degree coefficients tautological intersection numbers on the compactified moduli space and constant term the orbifold Euler characteristic of the compactified moduli space. We also prove a recursive formula which can be used to effectively calculate these polynomials.

String and dilaton equations for counting lattice points in the moduli space of curves

We prove that the Eynard-Orantin symplectic invariants of the curve xy-y^2=1 are the orbifold Euler characteristics of the moduli spaces of genus g curves. We do this by associating to the Eynard-Orantin invariants of xy-y^2=1 a problem of enumerating covers of the two-sphere branched over three points. This viewpoint produces new recursion relations---string and dilaton equations---between the quasi-polynomials that enumerate such covers.
