Higher Mertens constants for almost primes

For $k\ge1$, a $k$-almost prime is a positive integer with exactly $k$ prime factors, counted with multiplicity. In this article we give elementary proofs of precise asymptotics for the reciprocal sum of $k$-almost primes. Our results match the strength of those of classical analytic methods. We also study the limiting behavior of the constants appearing in these estimates, which may be viewed as higher analogues of the Mertens constant $β=0.2614...$ Further, in the case $k=2$ of semiprimes we give yet finer-scale and explicit estimates, as well as a conjecture.

Refocusing of Light Rays in Space-Time

We investigate refocusing and strong refocusing of light rays in a space-time. A strongly refocusing space-time is refocusing. The converse is unknown. We construct examples of space-times which are refocusing, but not strongly so, at a particular point. These space-times are strongly refocusing at other points. The geometrization conjecture proved by Perelman implies that a globally hyperbolic refocusing space-time of dimension $\leq 4$ admits a strongly refocusing Lorentz metric. We show that the possibly empty set of points at which a strongly causal space-time is refocusing is closed. We prove that a Lorentz covering space of a strongly causal refocusing space-time is a strongly causal refocusing space-time. This generalizes the result of Chernov and Rudyak for globally hyperbolic space-times.

Topological properties of manifolds admitting a $Y^x$-Riemannian metric

A complete Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ is a $Y^x_l$-manifold if every unit speed geodesic $γ(t)$ originating at $γ(0)=x\in M$ satisfies $γ(l)=x$ for $0\neq l\in \R$. Bérard-Bergery proved that if $(M^m,g), m>1$ is a $Y^x_l$-manifold, then $M$ is a closed manifold with finite fundamental group, and the cohomology ring $H^*(M, \Q)$ is generated by one element. We say that $(M,g)$ is a $Y^x$-manifold if for every $ε>0$ there exists $l>ε$ such that for every unit speed geodesic $γ(t)$ originating at $x$, the point $γ(l)$ is $ε$-close to $x$. We use Low's notion of refocussing Lorentzian space-times to show that if $(M^m, g), m>1$ is a $Y^x$-manifold, then $M$ is a closed manifold with finite fundamental group. As a corollary we get that a Riemannian covering of a $Y^x$-manifold is a $Y^x$-manifold. Another corollary is that if $(M^m,g), m=2,3$ is a $Y^x$-manifold, then $(M, h)$ is a $Y^x_l$-manifold for some metric $h.$
