Congruences like Atkin's for the partition function

Let $p(n)$ be the ordinary partition function. In the 1960s Atkin found a number of examples of congruences of the form $p( Q^3 \ell n+β)\equiv0\pmod\ell$ where $\ell$ and $Q$ are prime and $5\leq \ell\leq 31$; these lie in two natural families distinguished by the square class of $1-24β\pmod\ell$. In recent decades much work has been done to understand congruences of the form $p(Q^m\ell n+β)\equiv 0\pmod\ell$. It is now known that there are many such congruences when $m\geq 4$, that such congruences are scarce (if they exist at all) when $m=1, 2$, and that for $m=0$ such congruences exist only when $\ell=5, 7, 11$. For congruences like Atkin's (when $m=3$), more examples have been found for $5\leq \ell\leq 31$ but little else seems to be known. Here we use the theory of modular Galois representations to prove that for every prime $\ell\geq 5$, there are infinitely many congruences like Atkin's in the first natural family which he discovered and that for at least $17/24$ of the primes $\ell$ there are infinitely many congruences in the second family.

Modularity of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$-representations over CM fields

We prove that many representations $\overlineρ : \operatorname{Gal}(\overline{K} / K) \to \operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_3)$, where $K$ is a CM field, arise from modular elliptic curves. We prove similar results when the prime $p = 3$ is replaced by $p = 2$ or $p = 5$. As a consequence, we prove that a positive proportion of elliptic curves over any CM field not containing a 5th root of unity are modular.

Potential automorphy over CM fields

Let $F$ be a CM number field. We prove modularity lifting theorems for regular $n$-dimensional Galois representations over $F$ without any self-duality condition. We deduce that all elliptic curves $E$ over $F$ are potentially modular, and furthermore satisfy the Sato--Tate conjecture. As an application of a different sort, we also prove the Ramanujan Conjecture for weight zero cuspidal automorphic representations for $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{A}_F)$.

Monodromy for some rank two Galois representations over CM fields

We investigate local-global compatibility for cuspidal automorphic representations $π$ for GL(2) over CM fields that are regular algebraic of weight $0$. We prove that for a Dirichlet density one set of primes $l$ and any $ι: \overline{\mathbf{Q}}_l \cong \mathbf{C}$, the $l$-adic Galois representation attached to $π$ and $ι$ has nontrivial monodromy at any $v \nmid l$ in $F$ at which $π$ is special.

Deformations of polarized automorphic Galois representations and adjoint Selmer groups

We prove the vanishing of the geometric Bloch-Kato Selmer group for the adjoint representation of a Galois representation associated to regular algebraic polarized cuspidal automorphic representations under an assumption on the residual image. Using this, we deduce that the localization and completion of a certain universal deformation ring for the residual representation at the characteristic zero point induced from the automorphic representation is formally smooth of the correct dimension. We do this by employing the Taylor-Wiles-Kisin patching method together with Kisin's technique of analyzing the generic fibre of universal deformation rings. Along the way we give a characterization of smooth closed points on the generic fibre of Kisin's potentially semistable local deformation rings in terms of their Weil-Deligne representations.

Finiteness of unramified deformation rings

We prove that the universal unramified deformation ring $R^{\mathrm{unr}}$ of a continuous Galois representation $\overlineρ: G_{F^{+}} \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_n(k)$ (for a totally real field $F^{+}$ and finite field $k$) is finite over $\mathcal{O} = W(k)$ in many cases. We also prove (under similar hypotheses) that the universal deformation ring $R^{\mathrm{univ}}$ is finite over the local deformation ring $R^{\mathrm{loc}}$.

Modularity of nearly ordinary 2-adic residually dihedral Galois representations

We prove modularity of some two dimensional, 2-adic Galois representations over totally real fields that are nearly ordinary and that are residually dihedral. We do this by employing the strategy of Skinner and Wiles, using Hida families, together with the 2-adic patching method of Khare and Wintenberger. As an application we deduce modularity of some elliptic curves over totally real fields that have good ordinary or multiplicative reduction at places above 2.
