Modularity of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$-representations over CM fields

We prove that many representations $\overlineρ : \operatorname{Gal}(\overline{K} / K) \to \operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_3)$, where $K$ is a CM field, arise from modular elliptic curves. We prove similar results when the prime $p = 3$ is replaced by $p = 2$ or $p = 5$. As a consequence, we prove that a positive proportion of elliptic curves over any CM field not containing a 5th root of unity are modular.

On the vanishing of adjoint Bloch--Kato Selmer groups of irreducible automorphic Galois representations

Let $ρ$ be the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to a cuspidal, regular algebraic, polarizable automorphic representation of $GL_n$. Assuming only that $ρ$ satisfies an irreducibility condition, we prove the vanishing of the adjoint Bloch--Kato Selmer group attached to $ρ$. This generalizes previous work of the author and James Newton.

Potential automorphy over CM fields

Let $F$ be a CM number field. We prove modularity lifting theorems for regular $n$-dimensional Galois representations over $F$ without any self-duality condition. We deduce that all elliptic curves $E$ over $F$ are potentially modular, and furthermore satisfy the Sato--Tate conjecture. As an application of a different sort, we also prove the Ramanujan Conjecture for weight zero cuspidal automorphic representations for $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{A}_F)$.

On the average number of 2-Selmer elements of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(X)$ with two marked points

We consider elliptic curves over global fields of positive characteristic with two distinct marked non-trivial rational points. Restricting to a certain subfamily of the universal one, we show that the average size of the 2-Selmer groups of these curves exists, in a natural sense, and equals 12. Along the way, we consider a map from these 2-Selmer groups to the moduli space of $G$-torsors over an algebraic curve, where $G$ is isogenous to $\mathrm{SL}_2^4$, and show that the images of 2-Selmer elements under this map become equidistributed in the limit.

Potential automorphy and the Leopoldt conjecture

We study in this paper Hida's p-adic Hecke algebra for GL_n over a CM field F. Hida has made a conjecture about the dimension of these Hecke algebras, which he calls the non-abelian Leopoldt conjecture, and shown that his conjecture in the case of F being the rationals implies the classical Leopoldt conjecture for a number field K of degree n over the rationals, if one assumes further the existence of automorphic induction of characters for the extension K over the rationals. We study Hida's conjecture using the automorphy lifting techniques adapted to the GL_n setting by Calegari--Geraghty. We prove an automorphy lifting result in this setting, conditional on existence and local-global compatibility of Galois representations arising from torsion classes in the cohomology of the corresponding symmetric manifolds. Under the same conditions we show that one can deduce the classical (abelian) Leopoldt conjectures for a totally real number field K and a prime p using Hida's non-abelian Leopoldt conjecture for p-adic Hecke algebra for GL_n over CM fields without needing to assume automorphic induction of characters for the extension K over the rationals. For this methods of potential automorphy results are used.

Automorphy of some residually S_5 Galois representations

We prove automorphy lifting theorems for 2-dimensional Galois representations of absolute Galois groups of totally real fields when the residual representation is of "exceptional" type. This exceptional case is when we are in characteristic 5, the residual representation has projective image PGL_2(F_5), and the fixed field of its kernel contains a primitive 5th root of unity. In this case the Taylor-Wiles patching method does not suffice and we prove our theorem by combining patching with the technique of automorphy by p-adic approximation.
