Potential automorphy over CM fields

Let $F$ be a CM number field. We prove modularity lifting theorems for regular $n$-dimensional Galois representations over $F$ without any self-duality condition. We deduce that all elliptic curves $E$ over $F$ are potentially modular, and furthermore satisfy the Sato--Tate conjecture. As an application of a different sort, we also prove the Ramanujan Conjecture for weight zero cuspidal automorphic representations for $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{A}_F)$.

Abelian surfaces with fixed $3$-torsion

Given a genus two curve $X: y^2 = x^5 + a x^3 + b x^2 + c x + d$, we give an explicit parametrization of all other such curves $Y$ with a specified symplectic isomorphism on three-torsion of Jacobians $\mbox{Jac}(X)[3] \cong \mbox{Jac}(Y)[3]$. It is known that under certain conditions modularity of $X$ implies modularity of infinitely many of the $Y$, and we explain how our formulas render this transfer of modularity explicit. Our method centers on the invariant theory of the complex reflection group $C_3 \times \operatorname{Sp}_4(\mathbf{F}_3)$. We discuss other examples where complex reflection groups are related to moduli spaces of curves, and in particular motivate our main computation with an exposition of the simpler case of the group $\operatorname{Sp}_2(\mathbf{F}_3) = \mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbf{F}_3)$ and $3$-torsion on elliptic curves.

Irreducibility of automorphic Galois representations of GL(n), n at most 5

Let pi be a regular, algebraic, essentially self-dual cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_n(A_F), where F is a totally real field and n is at most 5. We show that for all primes l, the l-adic Galois representations associated to pi are irreducible, and for all but finitely many primes l, the mod l Galois representations associated to pi are also irreducible. We also show that the Lie algebras of the Zariski closures of the l-adic representations are independent of l.

Abelian Spiders

If G is a finite graph, then the largest eigenvalue L of the adjacency matrix of G is a totally real algebraic integer (L is the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of G). We say that G is abelian if the field generated by L^2 is abelian. Given a fixed graph G and a fixed set of vertices of G, we define a spider graph to be a graph obtained by attaching to each of the chosen vertices of G some 2-valent trees of finite length. The main result is that only finitely many of the corresponding spider graphs are both abelian and not Dynkin diagrams, and that all such spiders can be effectively enumerated; this generalizes a previous result of Calegari, Morrison, and Snyder. The main theorem has applications to the classification of finite index subfactors. We also prove that the set of Salem numbers of "abelian type" is discrete.

The Stable Homology of Congruence Subgroups

In a previous paper, the author (together with Matthew Emerton) proved that the completed cohomology groups of SL_N(Z) are stable in fixed degree as N goes to infinity (Z may be replaced by the ring O_F of integers of any number field). In this paper, we relate these completed cohomology groups to K-theory and Galois cohomology. Various consequences include showing that Borel's stable classes become infinitely p-divisible up the p-congruence tower if and only if a certain p-adic zeta value is non-zero. We use our results to compute H_2(Gamma_N(p),F_p) (for sufficiently large N) where Gamma_N(p) is the full level-p congruence subgroup of SL_N(Z).

Finiteness of unramified deformation rings

We prove that the universal unramified deformation ring $R^{\mathrm{unr}}$ of a continuous Galois representation $\overlineρ: G_{F^{+}} \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_n(k)$ (for a totally real field $F^{+}$ and finite field $k$) is finite over $\mathcal{O} = W(k)$ in many cases. We also prove (under similar hypotheses) that the universal deformation ring $R^{\mathrm{univ}}$ is finite over the local deformation ring $R^{\mathrm{loc}}$.

Even Galois Representations and the Fontaine--Mazur conjecture II

We prove, under mild hypotheses, that there are no irreducible two-dimensional_even_ Galois representations of $\Gal(\Qbar/\Q)$ which are de Rham with distinct Hodge--Tate weights. This removes the "ordinary" hypothesis required in previous work of the author. We construct examples of irreducible two-dimensional residual representations that have no characteristic zero geometric (= de Rham) deformations.

The Artin Conjecture for some S_5-extensions

We establish some new cases of Artin's conjecture. Our results apply to Galois representations over $\Q$ with image $S_5$ satisfying certain local hypotheses, the most important of which is that complex conjugation is conjugate to $(12)(34)$. In fact, we prove the stronger claim conjectured by Langlands that these representations are automorphic. For the irreducible representations of dimensions 4 and 6, our result follows from known 2-dimensional cases of Artin's conjecture (proved by Sasaki) as well as the functorial properties of the Asai transfer proved by Ramakrishnan. For the irreducible representations of dimension 5, we encounter the problem of descending an automorphic form from a quadratic extension compatibly with the Galois representation. This problem is partly solved by working instead with a four dimensional representation of some central extension of $S_5$. Our modularity results in this case are contingent on the non-vanishing of a certain Dedekind zeta function on the real line in the critical strip. A result of Booker show that one can (in principle) explicitly verify this non-vanishing, and with Booker's help we give an example, verifying Artin's conjecture for representations coming from the (Galois closure) of the quintic field $K$ of smallest discriminant (1609).

Cyclotomic integers, fusion categories, and subfactors

Dimensions of objects in fusion categories are cyclotomic integers, hence number theoretic results have implications in the study of fusion categories and finite depth subfactors. We give two such applications. The first application is determining a complete list of numbers in the interval (2, 76/33) which can occur as the Frobenius-Perron dimension of an object in a fusion category. The smallest number on this list is realized in a new fusion category which is constructed in the appendix written by V. Ostrik, while the others are all realized by known examples. The second application proves that in any family of graphs obtained by adding a 2-valent tree to a fixed graph, either only finitely many graphs are principal graphs of subfactors or the family consists of the A_n or D_n Dynkin diagrams. This result is effective, and we apply it to several families arising in the classification of subfactors of index less then 5.

Even Galois Representations and the Fontaine-Mazur Conjecture

We prove some cases of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture for even Galois representations. In particular, we prove, under mild hypotheses, that there are no irreducible two-dimensional ordinary even Galois representations of $\Gal(\Qbar/\Q)$ with distinct Hodge-Tate weights. If $K/\Q$ is an imaginary quadratic field, we also prove (again, under certain hypotheses) that $\Gal(\Qbar/K)$ does not admit irreducible two-dimensional ordinary Galois representations of non-parallel weight. Finally, we prove that any weakly compatible family of two dimensional irreducible Galois representations of $\Gal(\Qbar/\Q)$ is, up to twist, either modular or finite.
