Solution of the BEC to BCS Quench in One Dimension

A gas of interacting fermions confined in a quasi one-dimensional geometry shows a BEC to BCS crossover upon slowly driving its coupling constant through a confinement-induced resonance. On one side of the crossover the fermions form tightly-bound bosonic molecules behaving as a repulsive Bose gas, while on the other they form Cooper pairs, whose size is much larger than the average inter-particle distance. Here we consider the situation arising when the coupling constant is varied suddenly from the BEC to the BCS value. Namely, we study a BEC-to-BCS quench. By exploiting a suitable continuum limit of recently discovered solvable quenches in the Hubbard model, we show that the local stationary state reached at large times after the quench can be determined exactly by means of the Quench Action approach. We provide an experimentally-accessible characterisation of the stationary state by computing local pair correlation function as well as the quasi-particle distribution functions. We find that the steady state is increasingly dominated by two particle spin singlet bound states for stronger interaction strength but that bound state formation is inhibited at larger BEC density. The bound state rapidity distribution displays quartic power law decay suggesting a violation of Tan's contact relations.

Entanglement dynamics in confining spin chains

The confinement of elementary excitations induces distinctive features in the non-equilibrium quench dynamics. One of the most remarkable is the suppression of entanglement entropy which in several instances turns out to oscillate rather than grow indefinitely. While the qualitative physical origin of this behavior is clear, till now no quantitative understanding away from the field theory limit was available. Here we investigate this problem in the weak quench limit, when mesons are excited at rest, hindering entropy growth and exhibiting persistent oscillations. We provide analytical predictions of the entire entanglement dynamics based on a Gaussian approximation of the many-body state, which captures numerical data with great accuracy and is further simplified to a semiclassical quasiparticle picture in the regime of weak confinement. Our methods are valid in general and we apply explicitly to two prototypical models: the Ising chain in a tilted field and the experimentally relevant long-range Ising model.

Entanglement dynamics of thermofield double states in integrable models

We study the entanglement dynamics of thermofield double (TFD) states in integrable spin chains and quantum field theories. We show that, for a natural choice of the Hamiltonian eigenbasis, the TFD evolution may be interpreted as a quantum quench from an initial state which is low-entangled in the real-space representation and displays a simple quasiparticle structure. Based on a semiclassical picture analogous to the one developed for standard quantum quenches, we conjecture a formula for the entanglement dynamics, which is valid for both discrete and continuous integrable field theories, and expected to be exact in the scaling limit of large space and time scales. We test our conjecture in two prototypical examples of integrable spin chains, where numerical tests are possible. First, in the XY-model, we compare our predictions with exact results obtained by mapping the system to free fermions, finding excellent agreement. Second, we test our conjecture in the interacting XXZ Heisenberg model, against numerical iTEBD calculations. For the latter, we generally find good agreement, although, for some range of the system parameters and within the accessible simulation times, some small discrepancies are visible, which we attribute to finite-time effects.

Entanglement Hamiltonian during a domain wall melting in the free Fermi chain

We study the unitary time evolution of the entanglement Hamiltonian of a free Fermi lattice gas in one dimension initially prepared in a domain wall configuration. To this aim, we exploit the recent development of quantum fluctuating hydrodynamics. Our findings for the entanglement Hamiltonian are based on the effective field theory description of the domain wall melting and are expected to exactly describe the Euler scaling limit of the lattice gas. However, such field theoretical results can be recovered from high-precision numerical lattice calculations only when summing appropriately over all the hoppings up to distant sites.

Growth of Rényi Entropies in Interacting Integrable Models and the Breakdown of the Quasiparticle Picture

Rényi entropies are conceptually valuable and experimentally relevant generalisations of the celebrated von Neumann entanglement entropy. After a quantum quench in a clean quantum many-body system they generically display a universal linear growth in time followed by saturation. While a finite subsystem is essentially at local equilibrium when the entanglement saturates, it is genuinely out-of-equilibrium in the growth phase. In particular, the slope of the growth carries vital information on the nature of the system's dynamics, and its characterisation is a key objective of current research. Here we show that the slope of Rényi entropies can be determined by means of a spacetime duality transformation. In essence, we argue that the slope coincides with the stationary density of entropy of the model obtained by exchanging the roles of space and time. Therefore, very surprisingly, the slope of the entanglement is expressed as an equilibrium quantity. We use this observation to find an explicit exact formula for the slope of Rényi entropies in all integrable models treatable by thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and evolving from integrable initial states. Interestingly, this formula can be understood in terms of a quasiparticle picture only in the von Neumann limit.

Symmetry-resolved dynamical purification in synthetic quantum matter

When a quantum system initialized in a product state is subjected to either coherent or incoherent dynamics, the entropy of any of its connected partitions generically increases as a function of time, signalling the inevitable spreading of (quantum) information throughout the system. Here, we show that, in the presence of continuous symmetries and under ubiquitous experimental conditions, symmetry-resolved information spreading is inhibited due to the competition of coherent and incoherent dynamics: in given quantum number sectors, entropy decreases as a function of time, signalling dynamical purification. Such dynamical purification bridges between two distinct short and intermediate time regimes, characterized by a log-volume and log-area entropy law, respectively. It is generic to symmetric quantum evolution, and as such occurs for different partition geometry and topology, and classes of (local) Liouville dynamics. We then develop a protocol to measure symmetry-resolved entropies and negativities in synthetic quantum systems based on the random unitary toolbox, and demonstrate the generality of dynamical purification using experimental data from trapped ion experiments [Brydges et al., Science 364, 260 (2019)]. Our work shows that symmetry plays a key role as a magnifying glass to characterize many-body dynamics in open quantum systems, and, in particular, in noisy-intermediate scale quantum devices.

Symmetry-resolved entanglement in a long-range free-fermion chain

We investigate the symmetry resolution of entanglement in the presence of long-range couplings. To this end, we study the symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy in the ground state of a fermionic chain that has dimerised long-range hoppings with power-like decaying amplitude -- a long-range generalisation of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. This is a system that preserves the number of particles. The entropy of each symmetry sector is calculated via the charged moments of the reduced density matrix. We exploit some recent results on block Toeplitz determinants generated by a discontinuous symbol to obtain analytically the asymptotic behaviour of the charged moments and of the symmetry-resolved entropies for a large subsystem. At leading order we find entanglement equipartition, but comparing with the short-range counterpart its breaking occurs at a different order and it does depend on the hopping amplitudes.

Symmetry-resolved Page curves

Given a statistical ensemble of quantum states, the corresponding Page curve quantifies the average entanglement entropy associated with each possible spatial bipartition of the system. In this work, we study a natural extension in the presence of a conservation law and introduce the symmetry-resolved Page curves, characterizing average bipartite symmetry-resolved entanglement entropies. We derive explicit analytic formulae for two important statistical ensembles with a $U(1)$-symmetry: Haar-random pure states and random fermionic Gaussian states. In the former case, the symmetry-resolved Page curves can be obtained in an elementary way from the knowledge of the standard one. This is not true for random fermionic Gaussian states. In this case, we derive an analytic result in the thermodynamic limit based on a combination of techniques from random-matrix and large-deviation theories. We test our predictions against numerical calculations and discuss the sub-leading finite-size corrections.

Thermodynamic symmetry resolved entanglement entropies in integrable systems

We develop a general approach to compute the symmetry-resolved Rényi and von Neumann entanglement entropies (SREE) of thermodynamic macrostates in interacting integrable systems. Our method is based on a combination of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and the Gärtner-Ellis theorem from large deviation theory. We derive an explicit simple formula for the von Neumann SREE, which we show to coincide with the thermodynamic Yang-Yang entropy of an effective macrostate determined by the charge sector. Focusing on the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain, we test our result against iTEBD calculations for thermal states, finding good agreement. As an application, we provide analytic predictions for the asymptotic value of the SREE following a quantum quench.

Branch Point Twist Field Form Factors in the sine-Gordon Model II: Composite Twist Fields and Symmetry Resolved Entanglement

In this paper we continue the programme initiated in Part I, that is the study of entanglement measures in the sine-Gordon model. In both parts, we have focussed on one specific technique, that is the well-known connection between branch point twist field correlators and measures of entanglement in 1+1D integrable quantum field theory. Our papers apply this technique for the first time to a non-diagonal theory with an involved particle spectrum, the sine-Gordon model. In this Part II we focus on a different entanglement measure, the symmetry resolved entanglement, and develop its associated twist field description, exploiting the underlying U(1) symmetry of the theory. In this context, conventional branch point twist fields are no longer the fields required, but instead we must work with one of their composite generalisations, which can be understood as the field resulting from the fusion of a standard branch point twist field and the sine-Gordon exponential field associated with U(1) symmetry. The resulting composite twist field has correlators which as usual admit a form factor expansion. In this paper we write the associated form factor equations and solve them for various examples in the breather sector by using the method of angular quantisation. We show that, in the attractive regime, this is the sector which provides the leading contribution to the symmetry resolved entropies, both Renyi and von Neumann. We compute the latter in the limit of a large region size and show that they satisfy the property of equipartition, that is the leading contribution to the symmetry resolved entanglement is independent of the symmetry sector.

Entanglement of the $3$-State Potts Model via Form Factor Bootstrap: Total and Symmetry Resolved Entropies

In this paper, we apply the form factor bootstrap approach to branch point twist fields in the $q$-state Potts model for $q\leq 3$. For $q=3$ this is an integrable interacting quantum field theory with an internal discrete $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry and therefore provides an ideal starting point for the investigation of the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies. However, more generally, for $q\leq 3$ the standard Rényi and entanglement entropies are also accessible through the bootstrap programme. In our work we present form factor solutions both for the standard branch point twist field with $q\leq 3$ and for the composite (or symmetry resolved) branch point twist field with $q=3$. In both cases, the form factor equations are solved for two particles and the solutions are carefully checked via the $Δ$-sum rule. Using our analytic predictions, we compute the leading finite-size corrections to the entanglement entropy and entanglement equipartition for a single interval in the ground state.

Quenches and confinement in a Heisenberg-Ising spin ladder

We consider the quantum quench dynamics of a Heisenberg-Ising spin ladder which is an archetypal model in which confinement of elementary excitations is triggered by internal interactions rather than an external field. We show that the confinement strongly affects the light cone structure of correlation functions providing signatures of the velocities of the mesons of the model. We also show that the meson masses can be measured from the real time analysis of the evolution of the order parameter.

Real-Time Evolution in the Hubbard Model with Infinite Repulsion

We consider the real-time evolution of the Hubbard model in the limit of infinite coupling. In this limit the Hamiltonian of the system is mapped into a number-conserving quadratic form of spinless fermions, i.e. the tight binding model. The relevant local observables, however, do not transform well under this mapping and take very complicated expressions in terms of the spinless fermions. Here we show that for two classes of interesting observables the quench dynamics from product states in the occupation basis can be determined exactly in terms of correlations in the tight-binding model. In particular, we show that the time evolution of any function of the total density of particles is mapped directly into that of the same function of the density of spinless fermions in the tight-binding model. Moreover, we express the two-point functions of the spin-full fermions at any time after the quench in terms of correlations of the tight binding model. This sum is generically very complicated but we show that it leads to simple explicit expressions for the time evolution of the densities of the two separate species and the correlations between a point at the boundary and one in the bulk when evolving from the so called generalised nested Néel states.

Symmetry resolved relative entropies and distances in conformal field theory

We develop a systematic approach to compute the subsystem trace distances and relative entropies for subsystem reduced density matrices associated to excited states in different symmetry sectors of a 1+1 dimensional conformal field theory having an internal U(1) symmetry. We provide analytic expressions for the charged moments corresponding to the resolution of both relative entropies and distances for general integer $n$. For the relative entropies, these formulas are manageable and the analytic continuation to $n=1$ can be worked out in most of the cases. Conversely, for the distances the corresponding charged moments become soon untreatable as $n$ increases. A remarkable result is that relative entropies and distances are the same for all symmetry sectors, i.e. they satisfy entanglement equipartition, like the entropies. Moreover, we exploit the OPE expansion of composite twist fields, to provide very general results when the subsystem is much smaller than the total system. We focus on the massless compact boson and our results are tested against exact numerical calculations in the XX spin chain.

Symmetry-resolved entanglement detection using partial transpose moments

We propose an ordered set of experimentally accessible conditions for detecting entanglement in mixed states. The $k$-th condition involves comparing moments of the partially transposed density operator up to order $k$. Remarkably, the union of all moment inequalities reproduces the Peres-Horodecki criterion for detecting entanglement. Our empirical studies highlight that the first four conditions already detect mixed state entanglement reliably in a variety of quantum architectures. Exploiting symmetries can help to further improve their detection capabilities. We also show how to estimate moment inequalities based on local random measurements of single state copies (classical shadows) and derive statistically sound confidence intervals as a function of the number of performed measurements. Our analysis includes the experimentally relevant situation of drifting sources, i.e. non-identical, but independent, state copies.

Determinant formula for the field form factor in the anyonic Lieb-Liniger model

We derive an exact formula for the field form factor in the anyonic Lieb-Liniger model, valid for arbitrary values of the interaction $c$, anyonic parameter $κ$, and number of particles $N$. Analogously to the bosonic case, the form factor is expressed in terms of the determinant of a $N\times N$ matrix, whose elements are rational functions of the Bethe quasimomenta but explicitly depend on $κ$. The formula is efficient to evaluate, and provide an essential ingredient for several numerical and analytical calculations. Its derivation consists of three steps. First, we show that the anyonic form factor is equal to the bosonic one between two special off-shell Bethe states, in the standard Lieb-Liniger model. Second, we characterize its analytic properties and provide a set of conditions that uniquely specify it. Finally, we show that our determinant formula satisfies these conditions.

Entanglement and symmetry resolution in two dimensional free quantum field theories

We present a thorough analysis of the entanglement entropies related to different symmetry sectors of free quantum field theories (QFT) with an internal U(1) symmetry. We provide explicit analytic computations for the charged moments of Dirac and complex scalar fields in two spacetime dimensions, both in the massive and massless cases, using two different approaches. The first one is based on the replica trick, the computation of the partition function on Riemann surfaces with the insertion of a flux $α$, and the introduction of properly modified twist fields, whose two-point function directly gives the scaling limit of the charged moments. With the second method, the diagonalisation in replica space maps the problem to the computation of a partition function on a cut plane, that can be written exactly in terms of the solutions of non-linear differential equations of the Painlevé V type. Within this approach, we also derive an asymptotic expansion for the short and long distance behaviour of the charged moments. Finally, the Fourier transform provides the desired symmetry resolved entropies: at the leading order, they satisfy entanglement equipartition and we identify the subleading terms that break it. Our analytical findings are tested against exact numerical calculations in lattice models.

Entanglement equipartition in critical random spin chains

The reduced density matrix of many-body systems possessing an additive conserved quantity can be decomposed in orthogonal sectors which can be independently analyzed. Recently, these have been proven to equally contribute to entanglement entropy for one dimensional conformal and integrable systems. In this paper, we extend this equipartition theorem to the disordered critical systems by studying the random singlet phase. We analytically compute the disorder averaged symmetry resolved Rényi entropies and show the leading orders are independent of the symmetry sector. Our findings are cross-checked with simulations within the numerical strong disorder renormalization group. We also identify the first subleading term breaking equipartition which is of the form $s^2/\ln\ell$ where $s$ is the magnetization of a subsystem of length $\ell$.

Entanglement revivals as a probe of scrambling in finite quantum systems

The entanglement evolution after a quantum quench became one of the tools to distinguish integrable versus chaotic (non-integrable) quantum many-body dynamics. Following this line of thoughts, here we propose that the revivals in the entanglement entropy provide a finite-size diagnostic benchmark for the purpose. Indeed, integrable models display periodic revivals manifested in a dip in the block entanglement entropy in a finite system. On the other hand, in chaotic systems, initial correlations get dispersed in the global degrees of freedom (information scrambling) and such a dip is suppressed. We show that while for integrable systems the height of the dip of the entanglement of an interval of fixed length decays as a power law with the total system size, upon breaking integrability a much faster decay is observed, signalling strong scrambling. Our results are checked by exact numerical techniques in free-fermion and free-boson theories, and by time-dependent density matrix renormalisation group in interacting integrable and chaotic models.

Full counting statistics in the gapped XXZ spin chain

We exploit the knowledge of the entanglement spectrum in the ground state of the gapped XXZ spin chain to derive asymptotic exact results for the full counting statistics of the transverse magnetisation in a spin block of length. We found that for a subsystem of even length the full counting statistics is Gaussian, while for odd subsystems it is the sum of two Gaussian distributions. We test our analytic predictions with accurate tensor networks simulations. As a byproduct, we also obtain the symmetry (magnetisation) resolved entanglement entropies.

Lattice Bisognano-Wichmann modular Hamiltonian in critical quantum spin chains

We carry out a comprehensive comparison between the exact modular Hamiltonian and the lattice version of the Bisognano-Wichmann (BW) one in one-dimensional critical quantum spin chains. As a warm-up, we first illustrate how the trace distance provides a more informative mean of comparison between reduced density matrices when compared to any other Schatten $n$-distance, normalized or not. In particular, as noticed in earlier works, it provides a way to bound other correlation functions in a precise manner, i.e., providing both lower and upper bounds. Additionally, we show that two close reduced density matrices, i.e. with zero trace distance for large sizes, can have very different modular Hamiltonians. This means that, in terms of describing how two states are close to each other, it is more informative to compare their reduced density matrices rather than the corresponding modular Hamiltonians. After setting this framework, we consider the ground states for infinite and periodic XX spin chain and critical Ising chain. We provide robust numerical evidence that the trace distance between the lattice BW reduced density matrix and the exact one goes to zero as $\ell^{-2}$ for large length of the interval $\ell$. This provides strong constraints on the difference between the corresponding entanglement entropies and correlation functions. Our results indicate that discretized BW reduced density matrices reproduce exact entanglement entropies and correlation functions of local operators in the limit of large subsystem sizes. Finally, we show that the BW reduced density matrices fall short of reproducing the exact behavior of the logarithmic emptiness formation probability in the ground state of the XX spin chain.

One-particle density matrix of a trapped Lieb-Liniger anyonic gas

We provide a thorough characterisation of the zero-temperature one-particle density matrix of trapped interacting anyonic gases in one dimension, exploiting recent advances in the field theory description of spatially inhomogeneous quantum systems. We first revisit homogeneous anyonic gases with point-wise interactions. In the harmonic Luttinger liquid expansion of the one-particle density matrix for finite interaction strength, the non-universal field amplitudes were not yet known. We extract them from the Bethe Ansatz formula for the field form factors, providing an exact asymptotic expansion of this correlation function, thus extending the available results in the Tonks-Girardeau limit. Next, we analyse trapped gases with non-trivial density profiles. By applying recent analytic and numerical techniques for inhomogeneous Luttinger liquids,we provide exact expansions for the one-particle density matrix. We present our results for different confining potentials, highlighting the main differences with respect to bosonic gases.

Prethermalisation and Thermalisation in the Entanglement Dynamics

We investigate the crossover of the entanglement entropy towards its thermal value in nearly integrable systems. We employ equation of motion techniques to study the entanglement dynamics in a lattice model of weakly interacting spinless fermions after a quantum quench. For weak enough interactions we observe a two-step relaxation of the entanglement entropies of finite subsystems. Initially the entropies follow a nearly integrable evolution, approaching the value predicted by the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) of the unperturbed model. Then, they start a slow drift towards the thermal stationary value described by a standard Gibbs Ensemble (GE). While the initial relaxation to the GGE is independent of the interaction, the slow drift from GGE to GE values happens on time scales proportional to the inverse interaction squared. For asymptotically large times and subsystem sizes the dynamics of the entropies can be predicted using a modified quasiparticle picture that keeps track of the evolution of the fermionic occupations caused by the integrability breaking. This picture gives a quantitative description of the results as long as the integrability-breaking timescale is much larger than the one associated with the (quasi) saturation to the GGE. In the opposite limit the quasiparticle picture still provides the correct late-time behaviour, but it underestimates the initial slope of the entanglement entropy.

Quantum Generalized Hydrodynamics

Physical systems made of many interacting quantum particles can often be described by Euler hydrodynamic equations in the limit of long wavelengths and low frequencies. Recently such a classical hydrodynamic framework, now dubbed Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD), was found for quantum integrable models in one spatial dimension. Despite its great predictive power, GHD, like any Euler hydrodynamic equation, misses important quantum effects, such as quantum fluctuations leading to non-zero equal-time correlations between fluid cells at different positions. Focusing on the one-dimensional gas of bosons with delta repulsion, and on states of zero entropy, for which quantum fluctuations are larger, we reconstruct such quantum effects by quantizing GHD. The resulting theory of quantum GHD can be viewed as a multi-component Luttinger liquid theory, with a small set of effective parameters that are fixed by the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. It describes quantum fluctuations of truly nonequilibrium systems where conventional Luttinger liquid theory fails.

Quasiparticle dynamics of symmetry resolved entanglement after a quench: the examples of conformal field theories and free fermions

The time evolution of the entanglement entropy is a key concept to understand the structure of a non-equilibrium quantum state. In a large class of models, such evolution can be understood in terms of a semiclassical picture of moving quasiparticles spreading the entanglement throughout the system. However, it is not yet known how the entanglement splits between the sectors of an internal local symmetry of a quantum many-body system. Here, guided by the examples of conformal field theories and free-fermion chains, we show that the quasiparticle picture can be adapted to this goal, leading to a general conjecture for the charged entropies whose Fourier transform gives the desired symmetry resolved entanglement $S_n(q)$. We point out two physically relevant effects that should be easily observed in atomic experiments: a delay time for the onset of $S_n(q)$ which grows linearly with $|Δq|$ (the difference from the charge $q$ and its mean value), and an effective equipartition when $|Δq|$ is much smaller than the subsystem size.

Relaxation of the order-parameter statistics and dynamical confinement

We study the relaxation of the local ferromagnetic order in the quantum Ising chain in a slant field with both longitudinal and transverse components. After preparing the system in a fully polarised state, we analyse the time evolution of the entire probability distribution function (PDF) of the magnetisation within a block of $\ell$ spins. We first analyse the effect of confinement on the gaussification of the PDF for large $\ell$, showing that the melting of initial order is suppressed when the longitudinal field is aligned to initial magnetisation while it is sped up when it is in the opposite direction. Then we study the thermalisation dynamics. In the paramagnetic region, the PDF quickly shows thermal features. Conversely, in the ferromagnetic phase, when confinement takes place, the relaxation suffers a typical slowing down which depends on the interplay between the strength of the longitudinal field, the density of excitations, and the direction of the initial polarisation. Even when the initial magnetisation is aligned oppositely to the longitudinal field, confinement prevents thermalisation in the accessible timescale, as it is neatly bared by the PDF.

Subsystem distance after a local operator quench

We investigate the time evolution of the subsystem trace distance and Schatten distances after local operator quenches in two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) and in one-dimensional quantum spin chains. We focus on the case of a subsystem being an interval embedded in the infinite line. The initial state is prepared by inserting a local operator in the ground state of the theory. We only consider the cases in which the inserted local operator is a primary field or a sum of several primaries. While a nonchiral primary operator can excite both left-moving and right-moving quasiparticles, a holomorphic primary operator only excites a right-moving quasiparticle and an anti-holomorphic primary operator only excites a left-moving one. The reduced density matrix (RDM) of an interval hosting a quasiparticle is orthogonal to the RDM of the interval without any quasiparticles. Moreover, the RDMs of two intervals hosting quasiparticles at different positions are also orthogonal to each other. We calculate numerically the entanglement entropy, Rényi entropy, trace distance, and Schatten distances in time-dependent states excited by different local operators in the critical Ising and XX spin chains. These results match the CFT predictions in the proper limit.

Symmetry resolved entanglement entropy of excited states in a CFT

We report a throughout analysis of the entanglement entropies related to different symmetry sectors in the low-lying primary excited states of a conformal field theory (CFT) with an internal U(1) symmetry. Our findings extend recent results for the ground state. We derive a general expression for the charged moments, i.e. the generalised cumulant generating function, which can be written in terms of correlation functions of the operator that define the state through the CFT operator-state correspondence. We provide explicit analytic computations for the compact boson CFT (aka Luttinger liquid) for the vertex and derivative excitations. The Fourier transform of the charged moments gives the desired symmetry resolved entropies. At the leading order, they satisfy entanglement equipartition, as in the ground state, but we find, within CFT, subleading terms that break it. Our analytical findings are checked against free fermions calculations on a lattice, finding excellent agreement. As a byproduct, we have exact results for the full counting statistics of the U(1) charge in the considered excited states.

Symmetry resolved entanglement in gapped integrable systems: a corner transfer matrix approach

We study the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies in gapped integrable lattice models. We use the corner transfer matrix to investigate two prototypical gapped systems with a U(1) symmetry: the complex harmonic chain and the XXZ spin-chain. While the former is a free bosonic system, the latter is genuinely interacting. We focus on a subsystem being half of an infinitely long chain. In both models, we obtain exact expressions for the charged moments and for the symmetry resolved entropies. While for the spin chain we found exact equipartition of entanglement (i.e. all the symmetry resolved entropies are the same), this is not the case for the harmonic system where equipartition is effectively recovered only in some limits. Exploiting the gaussianity of the harmonic chain, we also develop an exact correlation matrix approach to the symmetry resolved entanglement that allows us to test numerically our analytic results.

Symmetry resolved entanglement in two-dimensional systems via dimensional reduction

We report on the calculation of the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies in two-dimensional many-body systems of free bosons and fermions by \emph{dimensional reduction}. When the subsystem is translational invariant in a transverse direction, this strategy allows us to reduce the initial two-dimensional problem into decoupled one-dimensional ones in a mixed space-momentum representation. While the idea straightforwardly applies to any dimension $d$, here we focus on the case $d=2$ and derive explicit expressions for two lattice models possessing a $U(1)$ symmetry, i.e., free non-relativistic massless fermions and free complex (massive and massless) bosons. Although our focus is on symmetry resolved entropies, some results for the total entanglement are also new. Our derivation gives a transparent understanding of the well known different behaviours between massless bosons and fermions in $d\geq2$: massless fermions presents logarithmic violation of the area which instead strictly hold for bosons, even massless. This is true both for the total and the symmetry resolved entropies. Interestingly, we find that the equipartition of entanglement into different symmetry sectors holds also in two dimensions at leading order in subsystem size; we identify for both systems the first term breaking it. All our findings are quantitatively tested against exact numerical calculations in lattice models for both bosons and fermions.

Negativity Spectrum in the Random Singlet Phase

Entanglement features of the ground state of disordered quantum matter are often captured by an infinite randomness fixed point that, for a variety of models, is the random singlet phase. Although a copious number of studies covers bipartite entanglement in pure states, at present, less is known for mixed states and tripartite settings. Our goal is to gain insights in this direction by studying the negativity spectrum in the random singlet phase. Through the strong disorder renormalization group technique, we derive analytic formulas for the universal scaling of the disorder averaged moments of the partially transposed reduced density matrix. Our analytic predictions are checked against a numerical implementation of the strong disorder renormalization group and against exact computations for the XX spin chain (a model in which free fermion techniques apply). Importantly, our results show that the negativity and logarithmic negativity are not trivially related after the average over the disorder.

Symmetry resolved entanglement in free fermionic systems

We consider the symmetry resolved Rényi entropies in the one dimensional tight binding model, equivalent to the spin-1/2 XX chain in a magnetic field. We exploit the generalised Fisher-Hartwig conjecture to obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the entanglement entropies with a flux charge insertion at leading and subleading orders. The o(1) contributions are found to exhibit a rich structure of oscillatory behaviour. We then use these results to extract the symmetry resolved entanglement, determining exactly all the non-universal constants and logarithmic corrections to the scaling that are not accessible to the field theory approach. We also discuss how our results are generalised to a one-dimensional free fermi gas.

Exact steady states for quantum quenches in integrable Heisenberg spin chains

The study of quantum quenches in integrable systems has significantly advanced with the introduction of the Quench Action method, a versatile analytical approach to non-equilibrium dynamics. However, its application is limited to those cases where the overlaps between the initial state and the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian governing the time evolution are known exactly. Conversely, in this work we consider physically interesting initial states for which such overlaps are still unknown. In particular, we focus on different classes of product states in spin-$1/2$ and spin-$1$ integrable chains, such as tilted ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. We get around the missing overlaps by following a recent approach based on the knowledge of complete sets of quasi-local charges. This allows us to provide a closed-form analytical characterization of the effective stationary state reached at long times after the quench, through the Bethe ansatz distributions of particles and holes. We compute the asymptotic value of local correlations and check our predictions against numerical data.

Local correlations in the attractive 1D Bose gas: from Bethe ansatz to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

We consider the ground-state properties of an extended one-dimensional Bose gas with pointwise attractive interactions. We take the limit where the interaction strength goes to zero as the system size increases at fixed particle density. In this limit the gas exhibits a quantum phase transition. We compute local correlation functions at zero temperature, both at finite and infinite size. We provide analytic formulas for the experimentally relevant one-point functions $g_2$, $g_3$ and analyze their finite-size corrections. Our results are compared to the mean-field approach based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation which yields the exact results in the infinite system size limit, but not for finite systems.

Multi-particle bound state formation following a quantum quench to the one-dimensional Bose gas with attractive interactions

We consider quantum quenches from an ideal Bose condensate to the Lieb-Liniger model with arbitrary attractive interaction strength. We focus on the properties of the non-equilibrium steady state reached at late times after the quench. Using recently developed methods based on integrability, we obtain an exact description of the stationary state for a large number of bosons. A distinctive feature of this state is the presence of a hierarchy of multi-particle bound states. We determine the dependence of their densities on interaction strength and obtain an exact expression for the stationary value of the local pair correlation $g_2$. We discuss ramifications of our results for cold atom experiments.

Negativity spectrum of one-dimensional conformal field theories

The partial transpose $ρ_A^{T_2}$ of the reduced density matrix $ρ_A$ is the key object to quantify the entanglement in mixed states, in particular through the presence of negative eigenvalues in its spectrum. Here we derive analytically the distribution of the eigenvalues of $ρ_A^{T_2}$, that we dub negativity spectrum, in the ground sate of gapless one-dimensional systems described by a Conformal Field Theory (CFT), focusing on the case of two adjacent intervals. We show that the negativity spectrum is universal and depends only on the central charge of the CFT, similarly to the entanglement spectrum. The precise form of the negativity spectrum depends on whether the two intervals are in a pure or mixed state, and in both cases, a dependence on the sign of the eigenvalues is found. This dependence is weak for bulk eigenvalues, whereas it is strong at the spectrum edges. We also investigate the scaling of the smallest (negative) and largest (positive) eigenvalues of $ρ_A^{T_2}$. We check our results against DMRG simulations for the critical Ising and Heisenberg chains, and against exact results for the harmonic chain, finding good agreement for the spectrum, but showing that the smallest eigenvalue is affected by very large scaling corrections.

One-body reduced density matrix of trapped impenetrable anyons in one dimension

We study the one-body reduced density matrix of a system of $N$ one-dimensional impenetrable anyons trapped by a harmonic potential. To this purpose we extend two methods developed to tackle related problems, namely the determinant approach and the replica method. While the former is the basis for exact numerical computations at finite $N$, the latter has the advantage of providing an analytic asymptotic expansion for large $N$. We show that the first few terms of such expansion are sufficient to reproduce the numerical results to an excellent accuracy even for relatively small $N$, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the replica method.

Quantum quenches in 1+1 dimensional conformal field theories

We review the imaginary time path integral approach to the quench dynamics of conformal field theories. We show how this technique can be applied to the determination of the time dependence of correlation functions and entanglement entropy for both global and local quenches. We also briefly review other quench protocols. We carefully discuss the limits of applicability of these results to realistic models of condensed matter and cold atoms.

Quantum quenches in the sinh-Gordon model: steady state and one point correlation functions

We consider quantum quenches to the sinh-Gordon integrable quantum field theory from a particular class of initial states. Our analysis includes the case of mass and interaction quenches starting from a non-interacting theory. By means of the recently developed quench action method, we fully characterize the stationary state reached at long times after the quench in terms of the corresponding rapidity distribution. We also provide exact results for the expectation values of arbitrary vertex operators in the post-quench stationary state by proposing a formula based on the analogy with the standard thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. Finally, we comment on the behavior of the post-quench stationary state under the mapping between the sinh-Gordon field theory and the one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger model.

Quantum quenches to the attractive one-dimensional Bose gas: exact results

We study quantum quenches to the one-dimensional Bose gas with attractive interactions in the case when the initial state is an ideal one-dimensional Bose condensate. We focus on properties of the stationary state reached at late times after the quench. This displays a finite density of multi-particle bound states, whose rapidity distribution is determined exactly by means of the quench action method. We discuss the relevance of the multi-particle bound states for the physical properties of the system, computing in particular the stationary value of the local pair correlation function $g_2$.

The entanglement negativity in random spin chains

We investigate the logarithmic negativity in strongly-disordered spin chains in the random-singlet phase. We focus on the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain and the random XX chain. We find that for two arbitrary intervals the disorder-averaged negativity and the mutual information are proportional to the number of singlets shared between the two intervals. Using the strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG), we prove that the negativity of two adjacent intervals grows logarithmically with the intervals length. In particular, the scaling behavior is the same as in conformal field theory, but with a different prefactor. For two disjoint intervals the negativity is given by a universal simple function of the cross ratio, reflecting scale invariance. As a function of the distance of the two intervals, the negativity decays algebraically in contrast with the exponential behavior in clean models. We confirm our predictions using a numerical implementation of the SDRG method. Finally, we also implement DMRG simulations for the negativity in open spin chains. The chains accessible in the presence of strong disorder are not sufficiently long to provide a reliable confirmation of the SDRG results.

The quench action approach in finite integrable spin chains

We consider the problem of constructing the stationary state following a quantum quench, using the exact overlaps for finite size integrable models. We focus on the isotropic Heisenberg spin chain with initial state Néel or Majumdar-Ghosh (dimer), although the proposed approach is valid for an arbitrary integrable model. We consider only eigenstates which do not contain zero-momentum strings because the latter are affected by fictitious singularities that are very difficult to take into account. We show that the fraction of eigenstates that do not contain zero-momentum strings is vanishing in the thermodynamic limit. Consequently, restricting to this part of the Hilbert space leads to vanishing expectation values of local observables. However, it is possible to reconstruct the asymptotic values by properly reweighting the expectations in the considered subspace, at the price of introducing finite-size corrections. We also develop a Monte Carlo sampling of the Hilbert space which allows us to study larger systems. We accurately reconstruct the expectation values of the conserved charged and the root distributions in the stationary state, which turn out to match the exact thermodynamic results. The proposed method can be implemented even in cases in which an analytic thermodynamic solution is not obtainable.

Exact formulas for the form factors of local operators in the Lieb-Liniger model

We present exact formulas for the form factors of local operators in the repulsive Lieb-Liniger model at finite size. These are essential ingredients for both numerical and analytical calculations. From the theory of Algebraic Bethe Ansatz, it is known that the form factors of local operators satisfy a particular type of recursive relations. We show that in some cases these relations can be used directly to derive compact expressions in terms of the determinant of a matrix whose dimension scales linearly with the system size. Our main results are determinant formulas for the form factors of the operators $(Ψ^{\dagger}(0))^2Ψ^2(0)$ and $Ψ^{R}(0)$, for arbitrary integer $R$, where $Ψ$, $Ψ^{\dagger}$ are the usual field operators. From these expressions, we also derive the infinite size limit of the form factors of these local operators in the attractive regime.

Partial transpose of two disjoint blocks in XY spin chains

We consider the partial transpose of the spin reduced density matrix of two disjoint blocks in spin chains admitting a representation in terms of free fermions, such as XY chains. We exploit the solution of the model in terms of Majorana fermions and show that such partial transpose in the spin variables is a linear combination of four Gaussian fermionic operators. This representation allows to explicitly construct and evaluate the integer moments of the partial transpose. We numerically study critical XX and Ising chains and we show that the asymptotic results for large blocks agree with conformal field theory predictions if corrections to the scaling are properly taken into account.

Quantum quench within the gapless phase of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ spin-chain

We consider an interaction quench in the critical spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain. We numerically compute the time evolution of the two-point correlation functions of spin operators in the thermodynamic limit and compare the results to predictions obtained in the framework of the Luttinger liquid approximation. We find that the transverse correlation function $\langle S^x_jS^x_{j+\ell}\rangle$ agrees with the Luttinger model prediction to a surprising level of accuracy. The agreement for the longitudinal two-point function $\langle S^z_jS^z_{j+\ell}\rangle$ is found to be much poorer. We speculate that this difference between transverse and longitudinal correlations has its origin in the locality properties of the respective spin operator with respect to the underlying fermionic modes.

Spin structures and entanglement of two disjoint intervals in conformal field theories

We reconsider the moments of the reduced density matrix of two disjoint intervals and of its partial transpose with respect to one interval for critical free fermionic lattice models. It is known that these matrices are sums of either two or four Gaussian matrices and hence their moments can be reconstructed as computable sums of products of Gaussian operators. We find that, in the scaling limit, each term in these sums is in one-to-one correspondence with the partition function of the corresponding conformal field theory on the underlying Riemann surface with a given spin structure. The analytical findings have been checked against numerical results for the Ising chain and for the XX spin chain at the critical point.

Towards entanglement negativity of two disjoint intervals for a one dimensional free fermion

We study the moments of the partial transpose of the reduced density matrix of two intervals for the free massless Dirac fermion. By means of a direct calculation based on coherent state path integral, we find an analytic form for these moments in terms of the Riemann theta function. We show that the moments of arbitrary order are equal to the same quantities for the compactified boson at the self-dual point. These equalities imply the non trivial result that also the negativity of the free fermion and the self-dual boson are equal.

Analytic results for a quantum quench from free to hard-core one dimensional bosons

It is widely believed that the stationary properties after a quantum quench in integrable systems can be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE), even if all the analytical evidence is based on free theories in which the pre- and post-quench modes are linearly related. In contrast, we consider the experimentally relevant quench of the one-dimensional Bose gas from zero to infinite interaction, in which the relation between modes is nonlinear, and consequently Wick's theorem does not hold. We provide exact analytical results for the time evolution of the dynamical density-density correlation function at any time after the quench and we prove that its stationary value is described by a GGE in which Wick's theorem is restored.

Entanglement Entropies of the quarter filled Hubbard model

We study Renyi and von Neumann entanglement entropies in the ground state of the one dimensional quarter-filled Hubbard model with periodic boundary conditions. We show that they exhibit an unexpected dependence on system size: for L=4 mod 8 the results are in agreement with expectations based on conformal field theory, while for L=0 mod 8 additional contributions arise. We show that these can be understood in terms of a "shell-filling" effect, and we develop a conformal field theory approach to calculate the additional contributions to the entropies. These analytic results are found to be in excellent agreement with density matrix renormalisation group computations for weak Hubbard interactions. We argue that for larger interactions the presence of a marginal irrelevant operator in the spin sector strongly affects the entropies at the finite sizes accessible numerically, and we present an effective way to take them into account.

Entanglement negativity after a global quantum quench

We study the time evolution of the logarithmic negativity after a global quantum quench. In a 1+1 dimensional conformal invariant field theory, we consider the negativity between two intervals which can be either adjacent or disjoint. We show that the negativity follows the quasi-particle interpretation for the spreading of entanglement. We check and generalise our findings with a systematic analysis of the negativity after a quantum quench in the harmonic chain, highlighting two peculiar lattice effects: the late birth and the sudden death of entanglement.

Finite temperature entanglement negativity in conformal field theory

We consider the logarithmic negativity of a finite interval embedded in an infinite one dimensional system at finite temperature. We focus on conformal invariant systems and we show that the naive approach based on the calculation of a two-point function of twist fields in a cylindrical geometry yields a wrong result. The correct result is obtained through a four-point function of twist fields in which two auxiliary fields are inserted far away from the interval, and they are sent to infinity only after having taken the replica limit. In this way, we find a universal scaling form for the finite temperature negativity which depends on the full operator content of the theory and not only on the central charge. In the limit of low and high temperatures, the expansion of this universal form can be obtained by means of the operator product expansion. We check our results against exact numerical computations for the critical harmonic chain.

From the sine-Gordon field theory to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang growth equation

We unveil a remarkable connection between the sine-Gordon quantum field theory and the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) growth equation. We find that the non-relativistic limit of the two point correlation function of the sine-Gordon theory is related to the generating function of the height distribution of the KPZ field with droplet initial conditions, i.e. the directed polymer free energy with two endpoints fixed. As shown recently, the latter can be expressed as a Fredholm determinant which in the large time separation limit converges to the GUE Tracy-Widom cumulative distribution. Possible applications and extensions are discussed.

Interaction quench in a Lieb-Liniger model and the KPZ equation with flat initial conditions

Recent exact solutions of the 1D Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation make use of the 1D integrable Lieb-Liniger model of interacting bosons. For flat initial conditions, it requires the knowledge of the overlap between the uniform state and arbitrary exact Bethe eigenstates. The same quantity is also central in the study of the quantum quench from a 1D non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate upon turning interactions. We compare recent advances in both domains, i.e. our previous exact solution, and a new conjecture by De Nardis et al.. This leads to new exact results and conjectures for both the quantum quench and the KPZ problem.

Interaction quench in a trapped one-dimensional Bose gas

We study the non-equilibrium quench dynamics from free to hard-core one-dimensional bosons in the presence of a hard-wall confining potential. We characterise the density profile and the two-point fermionic correlation function in the stationary state as well as their full time evolution. We find that for long times the system relaxes to a uniform density profile, but the correlation function keeps memory of the initial state with a stationary algebraic long-distance decay as opposite to the exponential behaviour found for the same quench in the periodic setup. We also compute the stationary bosonic two-point correlator which turns out to decay exponentially for large distances. We show that a two-step mechanism governs the time evolution: a quick approach to an almost stationary value is followed by a slow algebraic relaxation to the true stationary state.

Quantum quenches from excited states in the Ising chain

We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics after a sudden quench of the magnetic field in the transverse field Ising chain starting from excited states of the pre-quench Hamiltonian. We prove that stationary values of local correlation functions can be described by the generalised Gibbs ensemble (GGE). Then we study the full time evolution of the transverse magnetisation by means of stationary phase methods. The equal time two-point longitudinal correlation function is analytically derived for a particular class of excited states for quenches within the ferromagnetic phase, and studied numerically in general. The full time dependence of the entanglement entropy of a block of spins is also obtained analytically for the same class of states and for arbitrary quenches.

Recursive formulas for the overlaps between Bethe states and product states in XXZ Heisenberg chains

We consider the problem of computing the overlaps between the Bethe states of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain and generic states. We derive recursive formulas for the overlaps between some simple product states and off-shell Bethe states within the framework of the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz. These recursive formulas can be used to prove in a simple and straightforward way the recently-obtained results for the overlaps of the Bethe states with the Néel state, the dimer state, and the \textit{q}-deformed dimer state. However, these recursive formulas are derived for a broader class of states and represent a concrete starting point for the computation of rather general overlaps. Our approach can be easily extended to other one-dimensional Bethe Ansatz integrable models.

Relaxation after quantum quenches in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain

We consider the time evolution after quantum quenches in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ quantum spin chain with Ising-like anisotropy. The time evolution of short-distance spin-spin correlation functions is studied by numerical tensor network techniques for a variety of initial states, including Néel and Majumdar-Ghosh states and the ground state of the XXZ chain at large values of the anisotropy. The various correlators appear to approach stationary values, which are found to be in good agreement with the results of exact calculations of stationary expectation values in appropriate generalized Gibbs ensembles. In particular, our analysis shows how symmetries of the post-quench Hamiltonian that are broken by particular initial states are restored at late times.

Stationary entanglement entropies following an interaction quench in 1D Bose gas

We analyze the entanglement properties of the asymptotic steady state after a quench from free to hard-core bosons in one dimension. The Rényi and von Neumann entanglement entropies are found to be extensive, and the latter coincides with the thermodynamic entropy of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE). Computing the spectrum of the two-point function, we provide exact analytical results both for the leading extensive parts and the subleading terms for the entropies as well as for the cumulants of the particle number fluctuations. We also compare the extensive part of the entanglement entropy with the thermodynamic ones, showing that the GGE entropy equal the entanglement one and it is the double of the diagonal entropy.

Stationary entropies after a quench from excited states in the Ising chain

We consider the asymptotic state after a sudden quench of the magnetic field in the transverse field quantum Ising chain starting from excited states of the pre-quench Hamiltonian. We compute the thermodynamic entropies of the generalised Gibbs and the diagonal ensembles and we find that the generalised Gibbs entropy is always twice the diagonal one. We show that particular care should be taken in extracting the thermodynamic limit since different averages of equivalent microstates give different results for the entropies.

Validity of the GGE for quantum quenches from interacting to noninteracting models

In the majority of the analytical verifications of the conjecture that the Generalised Gibbs Ensemble describes the large time asymptotics of local observables in quantum quench problems, both the post-quench and the pre-quench Hamiltonians are essentially noninteracting. We test this conjecture studying the field correlations in the more general case of an arbitrary pre-quench Hamiltonian, while keeping the post-quench one noninteracting. We first show that in the previously studied special case of a noninteracting pre-quench Hamiltonian, the validity of the conjecture is a consequence of Wick's theorem. We then show that it is also valid in the general case of an arbitrary interacting pre-quench Hamiltonian, but this time as a consequence of the cluster decomposition property of the initial state, which is a fundamental principle for generic physical states. For arbitrary initial states that do not satisfy the cluster decomposition property, the above conjecture is not generally true. As a byproduct of our investigation we obtain an analytical derivation of earlier numerical results for the large time evolution of correlations after a quantum quench of the interaction in the Lieb-Liniger model from a nonzero value to zero.

Entanglement evolution across defects in critical anisotropic Heisenberg chains

We study the out-of-equilibrium time evolution after a local quench connecting two anisotropic spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg open chains via an impurity bond. The dynamics is obtained by means of the adaptive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group. We show that the entanglement entropies (Von Neumann and Rényi), in the presence of a weakened bond depend on the sign of the bulk interaction. For attractive interaction (Δ< 0), the defect turns out to be irrelevant and the evolution is asymptotically equivalent to the one without defect obtained by conformal field theory. For repulsive interaction (Δ>0), the defect is relevant and the entanglement saturates to a finite value. This out-of-equilibrium behavior generalizes the well known results for the ground-state entanglement entropy of the model.

Entanglement negativity in extended systems: A field theoretical approach

We report on a systematic approach for the calculation of the negativity in the ground state of a one-dimensional quantum field theory. The partial transpose rho_A^{T_2} of the reduced density matrix of a subsystem A=A_1 U A_2 is explicitly constructed as an imaginary-time path integral and from this the replicated traces Tr (rho_A^{T_2})^n are obtained. The logarithmic negativity E= log||rho_A^{T_2}|| is then the continuation to n->1 of the traces of the even powers. For pure states, this procedure reproduces the known results. We then apply this method to conformally invariant field theories in several different physical situations for infinite and finite systems and without or with boundaries. In particular, in the case of two adjacent intervals of lengths L1, L2 in an infinite system, we derive the result E\sim(c/4) ln(L1 L2/(L1+L2)), where c is the central charge. For the more complicated case of two disjoint intervals, we show that the negativity depends only on the harmonic ratio of the four end-points and so is manifestly scale invariant. We explicitly calculate the scale-invariant functions for the replicated traces in the case of the CFT for the free compactified boson, but we have not so far been able to obtain the n->1 continuation for the negativity even in the limit of large compactification radius. We have checked all our findings against exact numerical results for the harmonic chain which is described by a non-compactified free boson.

Entanglement negativity in the critical Ising chain

In the case of two disjoint blocks the CFT predictions are recovered only after taking into account the finite size corrections induced by the finite length of the blocks.

Entanglement Entropy of Quantum Wire Junctions

We consider a fermion gas on a star graph modeling a quantum wire junction and derive the entanglement entropy of one edge with respect to the rest of the junction. The gas is free in the bulk of the graph, the interaction being localized in its vertex and described by a non-trivial scattering matrix. We discuss all point-like interactions, which lead to unitary time evolution of the system. We show that for a finite number of particles N, the Renyi entanglement entropies of one edge grow as ln N with a calculable prefactor, which depends not only on the central charge, but also on the total transmission probability from the considered edge to the rest of the graph. This result is extended to the case with an harmonic potential in the bulk.

Entanglement negativity in quantum field theory

We develop a systematic method to extract the negativity in the ground state of a 1+1 dimensional relativistic quantum field theory, using a path integral formalism to construct the partial transpose rho_A^{T_2} of the reduced density matrix of a subsystem A=A1 U A2, and introducing a replica approach to obtain its trace norm which gives the logarithmic negativity E=ln||ρ_A^{T_2}||. This is shown to reproduce standard results for a pure state. We then apply this method to conformal field theories, deriving the result E\sim(c/4) ln(L1 L2/(L1+L2)) for the case of two adjacent intervals of lengths L1, L2 in an infinite system, where c is the central charge. For two disjoint intervals it depends only on the harmonic ratio of the four end points and so is manifestly scale invariant. We check our findings against exact numerical results in the harmonic chain.

Exact relations between particle fluctuations and entanglement in Fermi gases

We derive exact relations between the Renyi entanglement entropies and the particle number fluctuations of spatial connected regions in systems of N noninteracting fermions in arbitrary dimension. We prove that the asymptotic large-N behavior of the entanglement entropies is proportional to the variance of the particle number. We also consider 1D Fermi gases with a localized impurity, where all particle cumulants contribute to the asymptotic large-N behavior of the entanglement entropies. The particle cumulant expansion turns out to be convergent for all integer-order Renyi entropies (except for the von Neumann entropy) and the first few cumulants provide already a good approximation. Since the particle cumulants are accessible to experiments, these relations may provide a measure of entanglement in these systems.

Quantum quenches as classical critical films

We study the unitary time evolution of the order parameter of a quantum system after a sudden quench in the parameter driving the transition. By mapping the dynamics onto the imaginary time path-integral in a film geometry we derive the full mean-field non-equilibrium phase diagram for a one-component order parameter. The recently discovered non-equilibrium transition is identified with the shifted critical point in films and therefore it is generally expected to occur in more than one spatial dimension. We also find that anharmonic oscillations of the order parameter are a general feature of the mean-field quench dynamics.

We observe that for periodic boundary conditions the entropies exhibit an unexpected dependence on system size: for L=4 mod 8 the results are in agreement with expectations based on conformal field theory, while for L=0 mod 8 additional contributions arise. We explain this observation in terms of a shell-filling effect, and develop a conformal field theory approach to calculate the extra term in the entropies. Similar shell filling effects in entanglement entropies are expected to be present in higher dimensions and for other multicomponent systems.

Short time growth of a KPZ interface with flat initial conditions

The short time behavior of the 1+1 dimensional KPZ growth equation with a flat initial condition is obtained from the exact expressions of the moments of the partition function of a directed polymer with one endpoint free and the other fixed. From these expressions, the short time expansions of the lowest cumulants of the KPZ height field are exactly derived. The results for these two classes of cumulants are checked in high precision lattice numerical simulations. The short time limit considered here is relevant for the study of the interface growth in the large diffusivity/weak noise limit, and describes the universal crossover between the Edwards-Wilkinson and KPZ universality classes for an initially flat interface.

The KPZ equation with flat initial condition and the directed polymer with one free end

We study the directed polymer (DP) of length $t$ in a random potential in dimension 1+1 in the continuum limit, with one end fixed and one end free. This maps onto the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang growth equation in time $t$, with flat initial conditions. We use the Bethe Ansatz solution for the replicated problem which is an attractive bosonic model. The problem is more difficult than the previous solution of the fixed endpoint problem as it requires regularization of the spatial integrals over the Bethe eigenfunctions. We use either a large fixed system length or a small finite slope KPZ initial conditions (wedge). The latter allows to take properly into account non-trivial contributions, which appear as deformed strings in the former. By considering a half-space model in a proper limit we obtain an expression for the generating function of all positive integer moments $\bar{Z^n}$ of the directed polymer partition function. We obtain the generating function of the moments of the DP partition sum as a Fredholm Pfaffian. At large time, this Fredholm Pfaffian, valid for all time $t$, exhibits convergence of the free energy (i.e. KPZ height) distribution to the GOE Tracy Widom distribution

We provide the analytic conformal field theory result for the second order Renyi entropy for a free boson compactified on an orbifold describing the scaling limit of the Ashkin-Teller (AT) model on the self-dual line. We have checked this prediction in cluster Monte Carlo simulations of the classical two dimensional AT model. We have also performed extensive numerical simulations of the anisotropic Heisenberg quantum spin-chain with tree-tensor network techniques that allowed to obtain the reduced density matrices of disjoint blocks of the spin-chain and to check the correctness of the predictions for Renyi and entanglement entropies from conformal field theory. In order to match these predictions, we have extrapolated the numerical results by properly taking into account the corrections induced by the finite length of the blocks to the leading scaling behavior.

Dynamical correlation functions of the mesoscopic pairing model

We study the dynamical correlation functions of the Richardson pairing model (also known as the reduced or discrete-state BCS model) in the canonical ensemble. We use the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz formalism, which gives exact expressions for the form factors of the most important observables. By summing these form factors over a relevant set of states, we obtain very precise estimates of the correlation functions, as confirmed by global sum-rules (saturation above 99% in all cases considered). We exploit the exact solution of the model in terms of free Majorana fermions and we show how to construct the reduced density matrix in the spin variables by taking properly into account the Jordan-Wigner string between the two blocks. From this we can evaluate any Renyi entropy of finite integer order. We study in details critical XX and Ising chains and we show that the asymptotic results for large blocks agree with recent conformal field theory predictions if corrections to the scaling are included in the analysis correctly. We also report results in the gapped phase and after a quantum quench.

Entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals in conformal field theory II

We continue the study of the entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals in conformal field theories that we started in J. Stat. Mech. (2009) P11001. We compute Trρ_A^n for any integer n for the Ising universality class and the final result is expressed as a sum of Riemann-Siegel theta functions. These predictions are checked against existing numerical data. We provide a systematic method that gives the full asymptotic expansion of the scaling function for small four-point ratio (i.e. short intervals). These formulas are compared with the direct expansion of the full results for free compactified boson and Ising model. We finally provide the analytic continuation of the first term in this expansion in a completely analytic form.

Entanglement spectrum of random-singlet quantum critical points

The entanglement spectrum, i.e., the full distribution of Schmidt eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix, contains more information than the conventional entanglement entropy and has been studied recently in several many-particle systems. We compute the disorder-averaged entanglement spectrum, in the form of the disorder-averaged moments of the reduced density matrix, for a contiguous block of many spins at the random-singlet quantum critical point in one dimension. The result compares well in the scaling limit with numerical studies on the random XX model and is also expected to describe the (interacting) random Heisenberg model. Our numerical studies on the XX case reveal that the dependence of the entanglement entropy and spectrum on the geometry of the Hilbert space partition is quite different than for conformally invariant critical points.

Free-energy distribution of the directed polymer at high temperature

We study the directed polymer of length $t$ in a random potential with fixed endpoints in dimension 1+1 in the continuum and on the square lattice, by analytical and numerical methods. The universal regime of high temperature $T$ is described, upon scaling 'time' $t \sim T^5/κ$ and space $x = T^3/κ$ (with $κ=T$ for the discrete model) by a continuum model with $δ$-function disorder correlation. Using the Bethe Ansatz solution for the attractive boson problem, we obtain all positive integer moments of the partition function. The lowest cumulants of the free energy are predicted at small time and found in agreement with numerics. We then obtain the exact expression at any time for the generating function of the free energy distribution, in terms of a Fredholm determinant. At large time we find that it crosses over to the Tracy Widom distribution (TW) which describes the fixed $T$ infinite $t$ limit. The exact free energy distribution is obtained for any time and compared with very recent results on growth and exclusion models.

Parity effects in the scaling of block entanglement in gapless spin chains

We consider the Renyi alpha-entropies for Luttinger liquids (LL). For large block lengths l these are known to grow like ln l. We show that there are subleading terms that oscillate with frequency 2k_F (the Fermi wave number of the LL) and exhibit a universal power-law decay with l. The new critical exponent is equal to K/(2 alpha), where K is the LL parameter. We present numerical results for the anisotropic XXZ model and the full analytic solution for the free fermion (XX) point.

Universal corrections to scaling for block entanglement in spin-1/2 XX chains

We consider the Rényi entropies $S_n(\ell)$ in the one dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg XX chain in a magnetic field. The case n=1 corresponds to the von Neumann ``entanglement'' entropy. Using a combination of methods based on the generalized Fisher-Hartwig conjecture and a recurrence relation connected to the Painlevé VI differential equation we obtain the asymptotic behaviour, accurate to order ${\cal O}(\ell^{-3})$, of the Rényi entropies $S_n(\ell)$ for large block lengths $\ell$. For n=1,2,3,10 this constitutes the 3,6,10,48 leading terms respectively. The o(1) contributions are found to exhibit a rich structure of oscillatory behaviour, which we analyze in some detail both for finite $n$ and in the limit $n\to\infty$.

Universal parity effects in the entanglement entropy of XX chains with open boundary conditions

We consider the Renyi entanglement entropies in the one-dimensional XX spin-chains with open boundary conditions in the presence of a magnetic field. In the case of a semi-infinite system and a block starting from the boundary, we derive rigorously the asymptotic behavior for large block sizes on the basis of a recent mathematical theorem for the determinant of Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices. We conjecture a generalized Fisher-Hartwig form for the corrections to the asymptotic behavior of this determinant that allows the exact characterization of the corrections to the scaling at order o(1/l) for any n. By combining these results with conformal field theory arguments, we derive exact expressions also in finite chains with open boundary conditions and in the case when the block is detached from the boundary.

Bethe Ansatz approach to quench dynamics in the Richardson model

By instantaneously changing a global parameter in an extended quantum system, an initially equilibrated state will afterwards undergo a complex non-equilibrium unitary evolution whose description is extremely challenging. A non-perturbative method giving a controlled error in the long time limit remained highly desirable to understand general features of the quench induced quantum dynamics. In this paper we show how integrability (via the algebraic Bethe ansatz) gives one numerical access, in a nearly exact manner, to the dynamics resulting from a global interaction quench of an ensemble of fermions with pairing interactions (Richardson's model). This possibility is deeply linked to the specific structure of this particular integrable model which gives simple expressions for the scalar product of eigenstates of two different Hamiltonians. We show how, despite the fact that a sudden quench can create excitations at any frequency, a drastic truncation of the Hilbert space can be carried out therefore allowing access to large systems. The small truncation error which results does not change with time and consequently the method grants access to a controlled description of the long time behavior which is a hard to reach limit with other numerical approaches.

Off-diagonal correlations in one-dimensional anyonic models: A replica approach

We propose a generalization of the replica trick that allows to calculate the large distance asymptotic of off-diagonal correlation functions in anyonic models with a proper factorizable ground-state wave-function. We apply this new method to the exact determination of all the harmonic terms of the correlations of a gas of impenetrable anyons and to the Calogero Sutherland model. Our findings are checked against available analytic and numerical results.

Exact mesoscopic correlation functions of the pairing model

We study the static correlation functions of the Richardson pairing model (also known as the reduced or discrete-state BCS model) in the canonical ensemble. Making use of the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz formalism, we obtain exact expressions which are easily evaluated numerically for any value of the pairing strength up to large numbers of particles. We provide explicit results at half-filling and extensively discuss their finite-size scaling behavior.

Ageing Properties of Critical Systems

In the past few years systems with slow dynamics have attracted considerable theoretical and experimental interest. Ageing phenomena are observed during this ever-lasting non-equilibrium evolution. A simple instance of such a behaviour is provided by the dynamics that takes place when a system is quenched from its high-temperature phase to the critical point. The aim of this review is to summarize the various numerical and analytical results that have been recently obtained for this case. Particular emphasis is put to the field-theoretical methods that can be used to provide analytical predictions for the relevant dynamical quantities. Fluctuation-dissipation relations are discussed and in particular the concept of fluctuation-dissipation ratio (FDR) is reviewed, emphasizing its connection with the definition of a possible effective temperature. The Renormalization-Group approach to critical dynamics is summarized and the scaling forms of the time-dependent non-equilibrium correlation and response functions of a generic observable are discussed. From them the universality of the associated FDR follows as an amplitude ratio. It is then possible to provide predictions for ageing quantities in a variety of different models. In particular the results for Model A, B, and C dynamics of the O(N) Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian, and Model A dynamics of the weakly dilute Ising magnet and of a ϕ^3 theory, are reviewed and compared with the available numerical results and exact solutions. The effect of a planar surface on the ageing behaviour of Model A dynamics is also addressed within the mean-field approximation.

Five-loop epsilon expansion for O(n)xO(m) spin models

We compute the Renormalization Group functions of a Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian with O(n)x O(m) symmetry up to five-loop in Minimal Subtraction scheme. The line n^+(m,d), which limits the region of second-order phase transition, is reconstructed in the framework of the epsilon=4-d expansion for generic values of $m$ up to O(epsilon^5). For the physically interesting case of noncollinear but planar orderings (m=2) we obtain n^+(2,3)=6.1(6) by exploiting different resummation procedures. We substantiate this results re-analyzing six-loop fixed dimension series with pseudo-epsilon expansion, obtaining n^+(2,3)=6.22(12). We also provide predictions for the critical exponents characterizing the second-order phase transition occurring for n>n^+.

Critical behavior of O(2)xO(N) symmetric models

We investigate the controversial issue of the existence of universality classes describing critical phenomena in three-dimensional statistical systems characterized by a matrix order parameter with symmetry O(2)xO(N) and symmetry-breaking pattern O(2)xO(N) -> O(2)xO(N-2). Physical realizations of these systems are, for example, frustrated spin models with noncollinear order. Starting from the field-theoretical Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian, we consider the massless critical theory and the minimal-subtraction scheme without epsilon expansion. The three-dimensional analysis of the corresponding five-loop expansions shows the existence of a stable fixed point for N=2 and N=3, confirming recent field-theoretical results based on a six-loop expansion in the alternative zero-momentum renormalization scheme defined in the massive disordered phase. In addition, we report numerical Monte Carlo simulations of a class of three-dimensional O(2)xO(2)-symmetric lattice models. The results provide further support to the existence of the O(2)xO(2) universality class predicted by the field-theoretical analyses.

Crossover behavior in three-dimensional dilute spin systems

We study the crossover behaviors that can be observed in the high-temperature phase of three-dimensional dilute spin systems, using a field-theoretical approach. In particular, for randomly dilute Ising systems we consider the Gaussian-to-random and the pure-Ising-to-random crossover, determining the corresponding crossover functions for the magnetic susceptibility and the correlation length. Moreover, for the physically interesting cases of dilute Ising, XY, and Heisenberg systems, we estimate several universal ratios of scaling-correction amplitudes entering the high-temperature Wegner expansion of the magnetic susceptibility, of the correlation length, and of the zero-momentum quartic couplings.

Multicritical behavior in frustrated spin systems with noncollinear order

We investigate the phase diagram and, in particular, the nature of the the multicritical point in three-dimensional frustrated $N$-component spin models with noncollinear order in the presence of an external field, for instance easy-axis stacked triangular antiferromagnets in the presence of a magnetic field along the easy axis. For this purpose we study the renormalization-group flow in a Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson ϕ^4 theory with symmetry O(2)x[Z_2 +O(N-1)] that is expected to describe the multicritical behavior. We compute its MS βfunctions to five loops. For N\ge 4, their analysis does not support the hypothesis of an effective enlargement of the symmetry at the multicritical point, from O(2) x [Z_2+O(N-1)] to O(2)xO(N). For the physically interesting case N=3, the analysis does not allow us to exclude the corresponding symmetry enlargement controlled by the O(2)xO(3) fixed point. Moreover, it does not provide evidence for any other stable fixed point. Thus, on the basis of our field-theoretical results, the transition at the multicritical point is expected to be either continuous and controlled by the O(2)xO(3) fixed point or to be of first order.

Spin models with random anisotropy and reflection symmetry

We study the critical behavior of a general class of cubic-symmetric spin systems in which disorder preserves the reflection symmetry $s_a\to -s_a$, $s_b\to s_b$ for $b\not= a$. This includes spin models in the presence of random cubic-symmetric anisotropy with probability distribution vanishing outside the lattice axes. Using nonperturbative arguments we show the existence of a stable fixed point corresponding to the random-exchange Ising universality class. The field-theoretical renormalization-group flow is investigated in the framework of a fixed-dimension expansion in powers of appropriate quartic couplings, computing the corresponding $β$-functions to five loops. This analysis shows that the random Ising fixed point is the only stable fixed point that is accessible from the relevant parameter region. Therefore, if the system undergoes a continuous transition, it belongs to the random-exchange Ising universality class. The approach to the asymptotic critical behavior is controlled by scaling corrections with exponent $Δ= - α_r$, where $α_r\simeq -0.05$ is the specific-heat exponent of the random-exchange Ising model.

Aging and fluctuation-dissipation ratio for the diluted Ising Model

We consider the out-of-equilibrium, purely relaxational dynamics of a weakly diluted Ising model in the aging regime at criticality. We derive at first order in a $\sqrtε$ expansion the two-time response and correlation functions for vanishing momenta. The long-time limit of the critical fluctuation-dissipation ratio is computed at the same order in perturbation theory.

Two-loop Critical Fluctuation-Dissipation Ratio for the Relaxational Dynamics of the O(N) Landau-Ginzburg Hamiltonian

The off-equilibrium purely dissipative dynamics (Model A) of the O(N) vector model is considered at criticality in an $ε= 4- d > 0$ up to O($ε^2$). The scaling behavior of two-time response and correlation functions at zero momentum, the associated universal scaling functions, and the nontrivial limit of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio are determined in the aging regime.

Critical structure factors of bilinear fields in O(N)-vector models

We compute the two-point correlation functions of general quadratic operators in the high-temperature phase of the three-dimensional O(N) vector model by using field-theoretical methods. In particular, we study the small- and large-momentum behavior of the corresponding scaling functions, and give general interpolation formulae based on a dispersive approach. Moreover, we determine the crossover exponent $ϕ_T$ associated with the traceless tensorial quadratic field, by computing and analyzing its six-loop perturbative expansion in fixed dimension. We find: $ϕ_T=1.184(12)$, $ϕ_T=1.271(21)$, and $ϕ_T=1.40(4)$ for $N=2,3,5$ respectively.
