The Hilbert-space structure of free fermions in disguise

Free fermions in disguise (FFD) Hamiltonians describe spin chains which can be mapped to free fermions, but not via a Jordan-Wigner transformation. Although the mapping gives access to the full Hamiltonian spectrum, the computation of spin correlation functions is generally hard. Indeed, the dictionary between states in the spin and free-fermion Hilbert spaces is highly non-trivial, due to the non-linear and non-local nature of the mapping, as well as the exponential degeneracy of the Hamiltonian eigenspaces. In this work, we provide a series of results characterizing the Hilbert space associated to FFD Hamiltonians. We focus on the original model introduced by Paul Fendley and show that the corresponding Hilbert space admits the exact factorization $\mathcal{H}=\mathcal{H}_F\otimes \mathcal{H}_D$, where $\mathcal{H}_F$ hosts the fermionic operators, while $\mathcal{H}_D$ accounts for the exponential degeneracy of the energy eigenspaces. By constructing a family of spin operators generating the operator algebra supported on $\mathcal{H}_D$, we further show that $\mathcal{H}_D=\mathcal{H}_{F'}\otimes \mathcal{H}_{\widetilde{D}}$, where $\mathcal{H}_{F'}$ hosts ancillary free fermions in disguise, while $\mathcal{H}_{\widetilde{D}}$ is generated by the common eigenstates of an extensive set of commuting Pauli strings. Our construction allows us to fully resolve the exponential degeneracy of all Hamiltonian eigenspaces and is expected to have implications for the computation of spin correlation functions, both in and out of equilibrium.

Coarse-grained Entanglement and Operator Growth in Anomalous Dynamics

In two-dimensional Floquet systems, many-body localized dynamics in the bulk may give rise to a chaotic evolution at the one-dimensional edges that is characterized by a nonzero chiral topological index. Such anomalous dynamics is qualitatively different from local-Hamiltonian evolution. Here we show how the presence of a nonzero index affects entanglement generation and the spreading of local operators, focusing on the coarse-grained description of generic systems. We tackle this problem by analyzing exactly solvable models of random quantum cellular automata (QCA) which generalize random circuits. We find that a nonzero index leads to asymmetric butterfly velocities with different diffusive broadening of the light cones, and to a modification of the order relations between the butterfly and entanglement velocities. We propose that these results can be understood via a generalization of the recently-introduced entanglement membrane theory, by allowing for a spacetime entropy current, which in the case of a generic QCA is fixed by the index. We work out the implications of this current on the entanglement "membrane tension" and show that the results for random QCA are recovered by identifying the topological index with a background velocity for the coarse-grained entanglement dynamics.

Enhanced entanglement negativity in boundary driven monitored fermionic chains

We investigate entanglement dynamics in continuously monitored open quantum systems featuring current-carrying non-equilibrium states. We focus on a prototypical one-dimensional model of boundary-driven non-interacting fermions with monitoring of the local density, whose average Lindblad dynamics features a well-studied ballistic to diffusive crossover in transport. Here we analyze the dynamics of the fermionic negativity, mutual information, and purity along different quantum trajectories. We show that monitoring this boundary-driven system enhances its entanglement negativity at long times, which otherwise decays to zero in absence of measurements. This result is in contrast with the case of unitary evolution where monitoring suppresses entanglement production. For small values of $γ$, the stationary-state negativity shows a logarithmic scaling with system size, transitioning to an area-law scaling as $γ$ is increased beyond a critical value. Similar critical behavior is found in the mutual information, while the late-time purity shows no apparent signature of a transition, being $O(1)$ for all values of $γ$. Our work unveils the double role of weak monitoring in current-driven open quantum systems, simultaneously damping transport and enhancing entanglement.

Entanglement dynamics of thermofield double states in integrable models

We study the entanglement dynamics of thermofield double (TFD) states in integrable spin chains and quantum field theories. We show that, for a natural choice of the Hamiltonian eigenbasis, the TFD evolution may be interpreted as a quantum quench from an initial state which is low-entangled in the real-space representation and displays a simple quasiparticle structure. Based on a semiclassical picture analogous to the one developed for standard quantum quenches, we conjecture a formula for the entanglement dynamics, which is valid for both discrete and continuous integrable field theories, and expected to be exact in the scaling limit of large space and time scales. We test our conjecture in two prototypical examples of integrable spin chains, where numerical tests are possible. First, in the XY-model, we compare our predictions with exact results obtained by mapping the system to free fermions, finding excellent agreement. Second, we test our conjecture in the interacting XXZ Heisenberg model, against numerical iTEBD calculations. For the latter, we generally find good agreement, although, for some range of the system parameters and within the accessible simulation times, some small discrepancies are visible, which we attribute to finite-time effects.

Symmetry-resolved Page curves

Given a statistical ensemble of quantum states, the corresponding Page curve quantifies the average entanglement entropy associated with each possible spatial bipartition of the system. In this work, we study a natural extension in the presence of a conservation law and introduce the symmetry-resolved Page curves, characterizing average bipartite symmetry-resolved entanglement entropies. We derive explicit analytic formulae for two important statistical ensembles with a $U(1)$-symmetry: Haar-random pure states and random fermionic Gaussian states. In the former case, the symmetry-resolved Page curves can be obtained in an elementary way from the knowledge of the standard one. This is not true for random fermionic Gaussian states. In this case, we derive an analytic result in the thermodynamic limit based on a combination of techniques from random-matrix and large-deviation theories. We test our predictions against numerical calculations and discuss the sub-leading finite-size corrections.

Temporal entanglement, quasiparticles and the role of interactions

In quantum many-body dynamics admitting a description in terms of non-interacting quasiparticles, the Feynman-Vernon influence matrix (IM), encoding the effect of the system on the evolution of its local subsystems, can be analyzed exactly. For discrete dynamics, the temporal entanglement (TE) of the corresponding IM satisfies an area law, suggesting the possibility of an efficient representation of the IM in terms of matrix-product states. A natural question is whether and how integrable interactions, which preserve stable quasiparticles, affect the behavior of the TE. While a simple semiclassical picture suggests a sublinear growth in time, one can wonder whether interactions may lead to violations of the area law. We address this problem by analyzing quantum quenches in a family of discrete integrable dynamics corresponding to the real-time Trotterization of the interacting XXZ Heisenberg model. By means of an analytical solution at the dual-unitary point and numerical calculations for generic values of the system parameters, we provide evidence that, away from the non-interacting limit, the TE displays a logarithmic growth in time, thus violating the area law. Our findings highlight the non-trivial role of interactions, and raise interesting questions on the possibility to efficiently simulate the local dynamics of interacting integrable systems.

Thermodynamic symmetry resolved entanglement entropies in integrable systems

We develop a general approach to compute the symmetry-resolved Rényi and von Neumann entanglement entropies (SREE) of thermodynamic macrostates in interacting integrable systems. Our method is based on a combination of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and the Gärtner-Ellis theorem from large deviation theory. We derive an explicit simple formula for the von Neumann SREE, which we show to coincide with the thermodynamic Yang-Yang entropy of an effective macrostate determined by the charge sector. Focusing on the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain, we test our result against iTEBD calculations for thermal states, finding good agreement. As an application, we provide analytic predictions for the asymptotic value of the SREE following a quantum quench.

A Random Unitary Circuit Model for Black Hole Evaporation

Inspired by the Hayden-Preskill protocol for black hole evaporation, we consider the dynamics of a quantum many-body qudit system coupled to an external environment, where the time evolution is driven by the continuous limit of certain $2$-local random unitary circuits. We study both cases where the unitaries are chosen with and without a conserved $U(1)$ charge and focus on two aspects of the dynamics. First, we study analytically and numerically the growth of the entanglement entropy of the system, showing that two different time scales appear: one is intrinsic to the internal dynamics (the scrambling time), while the other depends on the system-environment coupling. In the presence of a $U(1)$ conserved charge, we show that the entanglement follows a Page-like behavior in time: it begins to decrease in the middle stage of the "evaporation", and decreases monotonically afterwards. Second, we study the time needed to retrieve information initially injected in the system from measurements on the environment qudits. Based on explicit numerical computations, we characterize such time both when the retriever has control over the initial configuration or not, showing that different scales appear in the two cases.

Determinant formula for the field form factor in the anyonic Lieb-Liniger model

We derive an exact formula for the field form factor in the anyonic Lieb-Liniger model, valid for arbitrary values of the interaction $c$, anyonic parameter $κ$, and number of particles $N$. Analogously to the bosonic case, the form factor is expressed in terms of the determinant of a $N\times N$ matrix, whose elements are rational functions of the Bethe quasimomenta but explicitly depend on $κ$. The formula is efficient to evaluate, and provide an essential ingredient for several numerical and analytical calculations. Its derivation consists of three steps. First, we show that the anyonic form factor is equal to the bosonic one between two special off-shell Bethe states, in the standard Lieb-Liniger model. Second, we characterize its analytic properties and provide a set of conditions that uniquely specify it. Finally, we show that our determinant formula satisfies these conditions.

Exact dynamics in dual-unitary quantum circuits

We consider the class of dual-unitary quantum circuits in $1+1$ dimensions and introduce a notion of ``solvable'' matrix product states (MPSs), defined by a specific condition which allows us to tackle their time evolution analytically. We provide a classification of the latter, showing that they include certain MPSs of arbitrary bond dimension, and study analytically different aspects of their dynamics. For these initial states, we show that while any subsystem of size $\ell$ reaches infinite temperature after a time $t\propto \ell$, irrespective of the presence of conserved quantities, the light-cone of two-point correlation functions displays qualitatively different features depending on the ergodicity of the quantum circuit, defined by the behavior of infinite-temperature dynamical correlation functions. Furthermore, we study the entanglement spreading from such solvable initial states, providing a closed formula for the time evolution of the entanglement entropy of a connected block. This generalizes recent results obtained in the context of the self-dual kicked Ising model. By comparison, we also consider a family of non-solvable initial mixed states depending on one real parameter $β$, which, as $β$ is varied from zero to infinity, interpolate between the infinite temperature density matrix and arbitrary initial pure product states. We study analytically their dynamics for small values of $β$, and highlight the differences from the case of solvable MPSs.

Fermionic quantum cellular automata and generalized matrix product unitaries

We study matrix product unitary operators (MPUs) for fermionic one-dimensional (1D) chains. In stark contrast with the case of 1D qudit systems, we show that (i) fermionic MPUs do not necessarily feature a strict causal cone and (ii) not all fermionic Quantum Cellular Automata (QCA) can be represented as fermionic MPUs. We then introduce a natural generalization of the latter, obtained by allowing for an additional operator acting on their auxiliary space. We characterize a family of such generalized MPUs that are locality-preserving, and show that, up to appending inert ancillary fermionic degrees of freedom, any representative of this family is a fermionic QCA and viceversa. Finally, we prove an index theorem for generalized MPUs, recovering the recently derived classification of fermionic QCA in one dimension. As a technical tool for our analysis, we also introduce a graded canonical form for fermionic matrix product states, proving its uniqueness up to similarity transformations.

One-particle density matrix of a trapped Lieb-Liniger anyonic gas

We provide a thorough characterisation of the zero-temperature one-particle density matrix of trapped interacting anyonic gases in one dimension, exploiting recent advances in the field theory description of spatially inhomogeneous quantum systems. We first revisit homogeneous anyonic gases with point-wise interactions. In the harmonic Luttinger liquid expansion of the one-particle density matrix for finite interaction strength, the non-universal field amplitudes were not yet known. We extract them from the Bethe Ansatz formula for the field form factors, providing an exact asymptotic expansion of this correlation function, thus extending the available results in the Tonks-Girardeau limit. Next, we analyse trapped gases with non-trivial density profiles. By applying recent analytic and numerical techniques for inhomogeneous Luttinger liquids,we provide exact expansions for the one-particle density matrix. We present our results for different confining potentials, highlighting the main differences with respect to bosonic gases.

Scrambling in Random Unitary Circuits: Exact Results

We study the scrambling of quantum information in local random unitary circuits by focusing on the tripartite information proposed by Hosur et al. We provide exact results for the averaged Rényi-$2$ tripartite information in two cases: (i) the local gates are Haar random and (ii) the local gates are dual-unitary and randomly sampled from a single-site Haar-invariant measure. We show that the latter case defines a one-parameter family of circuits, and prove that for a "maximally chaotic" subset of this family quantum information is scrambled faster than in the Haar-random case. Our approach is based on a standard mapping onto an averaged folded tensor network, that can be studied by means of appropriate recurrence relations. By means of the same method, we also revisit the computation of out-of-time-ordered correlation functions, re-deriving known formulae for Haar-random unitary circuits, and presenting an exact result for maximally chaotic random dual-unitary gates.

Exact steady states for quantum quenches in integrable Heisenberg spin chains

The study of quantum quenches in integrable systems has significantly advanced with the introduction of the Quench Action method, a versatile analytical approach to non-equilibrium dynamics. However, its application is limited to those cases where the overlaps between the initial state and the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian governing the time evolution are known exactly. Conversely, in this work we consider physically interesting initial states for which such overlaps are still unknown. In particular, we focus on different classes of product states in spin-$1/2$ and spin-$1$ integrable chains, such as tilted ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. We get around the missing overlaps by following a recent approach based on the knowledge of complete sets of quasi-local charges. This allows us to provide a closed-form analytical characterization of the effective stationary state reached at long times after the quench, through the Bethe ansatz distributions of particles and holes. We compute the asymptotic value of local correlations and check our predictions against numerical data.

Local correlations in the attractive 1D Bose gas: from Bethe ansatz to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

We consider the ground-state properties of an extended one-dimensional Bose gas with pointwise attractive interactions. We take the limit where the interaction strength goes to zero as the system size increases at fixed particle density. In this limit the gas exhibits a quantum phase transition. We compute local correlation functions at zero temperature, both at finite and infinite size. We provide analytic formulas for the experimentally relevant one-point functions $g_2$, $g_3$ and analyze their finite-size corrections. Our results are compared to the mean-field approach based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation which yields the exact results in the infinite system size limit, but not for finite systems.

Multi-particle bound state formation following a quantum quench to the one-dimensional Bose gas with attractive interactions

We consider quantum quenches from an ideal Bose condensate to the Lieb-Liniger model with arbitrary attractive interaction strength. We focus on the properties of the non-equilibrium steady state reached at late times after the quench. Using recently developed methods based on integrability, we obtain an exact description of the stationary state for a large number of bosons. A distinctive feature of this state is the presence of a hierarchy of multi-particle bound states. We determine the dependence of their densities on interaction strength and obtain an exact expression for the stationary value of the local pair correlation $g_2$. We discuss ramifications of our results for cold atom experiments.

Quantum quenches in the sinh-Gordon model: steady state and one point correlation functions

We consider quantum quenches to the sinh-Gordon integrable quantum field theory from a particular class of initial states. Our analysis includes the case of mass and interaction quenches starting from a non-interacting theory. By means of the recently developed quench action method, we fully characterize the stationary state reached at long times after the quench in terms of the corresponding rapidity distribution. We also provide exact results for the expectation values of arbitrary vertex operators in the post-quench stationary state by proposing a formula based on the analogy with the standard thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. Finally, we comment on the behavior of the post-quench stationary state under the mapping between the sinh-Gordon field theory and the one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger model.

Quantum quenches to the attractive one-dimensional Bose gas: exact results

We study quantum quenches to the one-dimensional Bose gas with attractive interactions in the case when the initial state is an ideal one-dimensional Bose condensate. We focus on properties of the stationary state reached at late times after the quench. This displays a finite density of multi-particle bound states, whose rapidity distribution is determined exactly by means of the quench action method. We discuss the relevance of the multi-particle bound states for the physical properties of the system, computing in particular the stationary value of the local pair correlation function $g_2$.

Quasi-local conserved charges and spin transport in spin-$1$ integrable chains

We consider the integrable one-dimensional spin-$1$ chain defined by the Zamolodchikov-Fateev (ZF) Hamiltonian. The latter is parametrized, analogously to the XXZ spin-$1/2$ model, by a continuous anisotropy parameter and at the isotropic point coincides with the well-known spin-$1$ Babujian-Takhtajan Hamiltonian. Following a procedure recently developed for the XXZ model, we explicitly construct a continuous family of quasi-local conserved operators for the periodic spin-$1$ ZF chain. Our construction is valid for a dense set of commensurate values of the anisotropy parameter in the gapless regime where the isotropic point is excluded. Using the Mazur inequality, we show that, as for the XXZ model, these quasi-local charges are enough to prove that the high-temperature spin Drude weight is non-vanishing in the thermodynamic limit, thus establishing ballistic spin transport at high temperature.

Exact formulas for the form factors of local operators in the Lieb-Liniger model

We present exact formulas for the form factors of local operators in the repulsive Lieb-Liniger model at finite size. These are essential ingredients for both numerical and analytical calculations. From the theory of Algebraic Bethe Ansatz, it is known that the form factors of local operators satisfy a particular type of recursive relations. We show that in some cases these relations can be used directly to derive compact expressions in terms of the determinant of a matrix whose dimension scales linearly with the system size. Our main results are determinant formulas for the form factors of the operators $(Ψ^{\dagger}(0))^2Ψ^2(0)$ and $Ψ^{R}(0)$, for arbitrary integer $R$, where $Ψ$, $Ψ^{\dagger}$ are the usual field operators. From these expressions, we also derive the infinite size limit of the form factors of these local operators in the attractive regime.

Relaxation dynamics of local observables in integrable systems

We show, using the quench action approach [Caux&Essler Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013)], that the whole post-quench time evolution of an integrable system in the thermodynamic limit can be computed with a minimal set of data which are encoded in what we denote the generalized single-particle overlap coefficient $s_0^{Ψ_0}(λ)$. This function can be extracted from the thermodynamically leading part of the overlaps between the eigenstates of the model and the initial state. For a generic global quench the shape of $s_0^{Ψ_0}(λ)$ in the low momentum limit directly gives the exponent for the power law decay to the effective steady state. As an example we compute the time evolution of the static density-density correlation in the interacting Lieb-Liniger gas after a quench from a Bose-Einstein condensate. This shows an approach to equilibrium with power law $t^{-3}$ which turns out to be independent of the post-quench interaction and of the considered observable.

Recursive formulas for the overlaps between Bethe states and product states in XXZ Heisenberg chains

We consider the problem of computing the overlaps between the Bethe states of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain and generic states. We derive recursive formulas for the overlaps between some simple product states and off-shell Bethe states within the framework of the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz. These recursive formulas can be used to prove in a simple and straightforward way the recently-obtained results for the overlaps of the Bethe states with the Néel state, the dimer state, and the \textit{q}-deformed dimer state. However, these recursive formulas are derived for a broader class of states and represent a concrete starting point for the computation of rather general overlaps. Our approach can be easily extended to other one-dimensional Bethe Ansatz integrable models.
