Towards a microscopic description of nucleus-nucleus collisions

We present the first results of a comprehensive microscopic approach to describe nucleus-nucleus elastic collisions by means of an optical potential derived at first order in multiple-scattering theory and computed by folding the projectile and target nuclear densities with the nucleon-nucleon tt matrix, which describes the interaction between each nucleon of the projectile and each nucleon of the target. Chiral interactions are consistently used in the calculation of the tt matrix and of the nonlocal nuclear densities, which are computed within the ab initio no-core shell model. Cross sections calculated for αα collisions on 12^{12}C and 16^{16}O at projectile energies in the range 100-300 MeV are presented and compared with available data. For momentum transfer qq up to about 1.01.0 fm−1^{-1} our results are in good agreement with the experimental data, whereas for higher momenta a reduction of the imaginary contributions is needed.

Elastic proton scattering off non-zero spin nuclei

In recent years, we constructed a microscopic optical potential (OP) for elastic nucleon-nucleus (NANA) scattering using modern approaches based on chiral theories for the nucleon-nucleon (NNNN) interaction. The OP was derived at first order of the spectator expansion in Watson multiple scattering theory and its final expression was a folding integral between the NNNN tt matrix and the nuclear density of the target. Two- and three-body forces are consistently included both in the target and in the projectile description. The purpose of this work is to apply our microscopic OP to nuclei characterized by a ground state of spin-parity quantum numbers Jπ≠0+J^π\ne 0^+. We extended our formalism to include the spin of the target nucleus. The full amplitudes of the NNNN reaction matrix are retained in the calculations starting from two- and three-body chiral forces. We show a remarkable agreement with experimental data for the available observables and, simultaneously, provide reliable estimates for the theoretical uncertainties. This work paves the way toward a full microscopic approach to inelastic NANA scattering, showing that the derivation of optical potentials between states with Jπ≠0+J^π\ne 0^+ is completely under control.

Incorporating the weak mixing angle dependence to reconcile the neutron skin measurement on 208Pb by PREX-II

The only available electroweak measurement of the 208Pb^{208}\mathrm{Pb} neutron skin, ΔRnpΔR_{\rm{np}}, performed by the PREX-II Collaboration through polarized electron-lead scattering, shows a mild tension with respect to both the theoretical nuclear-model predictions and a host of measurements. However, the dependence on the weak mixing angle should be incorporated in the calculation, since its low-energy value is experimentally poorly known. We first repeat the PREX-II analysis confirming their measurement by fixing the weak mixing angle to its standard model value. Then, we show the explicit dependence of the PREX-II measurement on the weak mixing angle, obtaining that it is fully degenerate with the neutron skin. To break this degeneracy, we exploit the weak mixing angle measurement from atomic parity violation on lead, obtaining a slightly thinner neutron skin but with about doubled uncertainties, possibly easing the PREX tension. Relying on the theoretical prediction, ΔRnpth≈0.13−0.19 fmΔR_{\rm{np}}^{\mathrm{th}}\approx 0.13-0.19\ \mathrm{fm}, and using it as a prior in the fit, we find a weak mixing angle value about 1.2σ1.2σ smaller than the standard model prediction. Thus, we suggest a possible solution of the PREX-II tension by showing that, considering its underlying dependence on the weak mixing angle, the PREX-II neutron skin determination could be in agreement with the other available measurements and predictions if the weak mixing angle at the proper energy scale is smaller than the standard model prediction.

Elastic Antiproton-Nucleus Scattering from Chiral Forces

Elastic scattering of antiprotons off 4^4He, 12^{12}C, and 16,18^{16,18}O is described for the first time with a totally microscopic approach based on the calculation of an optical potential (OP) describing the antiproton-target interaction. The OP is derived using the recent antiproton-nucleon (pˉN\bar{p}N) chiral interaction to calculate the pˉN\bar{p}N tt matrix, while the target densities are computed with the ab initio no-core shell model using chiral interactions as well. Our results are in a good agreement with the existing experimental data and the results computed at different chiral orders of the pˉN\bar{p}N interaction display the convergence pattern expected from the theory.

Impact of Three-Body Forces on Elastic Nucleon-Nucleus Scattering Observables

In a previous series of papers we investigated the domain of applicability of chiral potentials to the construction of a microscopic optical potential (OP) for elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering. The final expression of the OP was a folding integral between the nucleon-nucleon (NNNN) tt matrix and the nuclear density of the target. In these calculations NNNN and three-nucleon (3N3N) chiral interactions were used for the target density and only the NNNN interaction for the NNNN tt matrix. The purpose of this work is to achieve another step towards the calculation of a more consistent OP introducing the 3N3N force also in the dynamic part of the OP. In the present work this is approximated with a density dependent NNNN interaction obtained after the averaging over the Fermi sphere. In practice, in our model the 3N3N force acts as a medium correction of the bare NNNN interaction used to calculate the NNNN tt matrix. Even if the 3N3N force is treated in an approximate way, this method naturally extends our previous model of the OP and allows a direct comparison of our present and previous results. We consider as case studies the elastic scattering of nucleons off 12^{12}C and 16^{16}O. We present results for the differential cross section and the spin observables for different values of the projectile energy. From the comparison with the experimental data and with the results of our previous model we assess the importance of the 3N3N interaction in the dynamic part of the OP. Our analysis indicates that the contribution of the 3N3N force in the tt matrix is small for the differential cross section and it is sizable for the spin observables, in particular, for the analyzing power. A chiral expansion order-by-order analysis of the scattering observables confirms the convergence of our results at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order, as already established in our previous work.

Neutron density distribution and neutron skin thickness of 208^{208}Pb

We present and discuss numerical predictions for the neutron density distribution of 208^{208}Pb using various non-relativistic and relativistic mean-field models for the nuclear structure. Our results are compared with the very recent pion photoproduction data from Mainz. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter for elastic electron scattering at the kinematics of the PREX experiment at JLab and the neutron skin thickness are compared with the available data. We consider also the dependence between the neutron skin and the parameters of the expansion of the symmetry energy.

Elastic and quasi-elastic electron scattering off nuclei with neutron excess

We present theoretical predictions for electron scattering on oxygen and calcium isotopic chains. The calculations are done within the framework of the distorted-wave Born approximation and the proton and neutron density distributions are evaluated adopting a relativistic Dirac-Hartree model. We present results for the elastic and quasi-elastic cross sections and for the parity-violating asymmetry. As a first step, the results of the models are tested in comparison with some of the data available for elastic and quasi-elastic scattering on 16O and 40Ca nuclei. Then, the evolution of some nuclear properties is investigated as a function of the neutron number. We also present a comparison with the parity-violating asymmetry parameter obtained by the PREX Collaboration on 208Pb and give a prediction for the future experiment CREX on 48Ca.

Elastic and quasi-elastic electron scattering on the N = 14, 20, and 28 isotonic chains

We present theoretical predictions for electron scattering on the N = 14, 20, and 28 isotonic chains from proton-deficient to proton-rich nuclei. The calculations are performed within the framework of the distorted-wave Born approximation and the proton and neutron density distributions are evaluated adopting a Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) approach with a density dependent meson-exchange interaction. We present results for the elastic and quasi-elastic cross sections and for the parity-violating asymmetry parameter. Owing to the correlations between the evolution of the electric charge form factors along each chain with the underlying proton shell structure of the isotones, elastic electron scattering experiments on isotones can provide useful informations about the occupation and filling of the single-particle levels of protons.

Nuclear Pairing from Chiral Pion-Nucleon Dynamics: Applications to Finite Nuclei

The 1S0 pairing gap in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter and finite nuclei is investigated using the chiral nucleon-nucleon potential at the N3LO order in the two-body sector, and the N2LO order in the three-body sector. To include realistic nuclear forces in RHB (Relativistic Hartree Bolgoliubov) calculations we rely on a separable form of the pairing interaction adjusted to the bare nuclear force. The separable pairing force is applied to the analysis of pairing properties for several isotopic and isotonic chains of spherical nuclei.
