Towards a microscopic description of nucleus-nucleus collisions

We present the first results of a comprehensive microscopic approach to describe nucleus-nucleus elastic collisions by means of an optical potential derived at first order in multiple-scattering theory and computed by folding the projectile and target nuclear densities with the nucleon-nucleon $t$ matrix, which describes the interaction between each nucleon of the projectile and each nucleon of the target. Chiral interactions are consistently used in the calculation of the $t$ matrix and of the nonlocal nuclear densities, which are computed within the ab initio no-core shell model. Cross sections calculated for $α$ collisions on $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O at projectile energies in the range 100-300 MeV are presented and compared with available data. For momentum transfer $q$ up to about $1.0$ fm$^{-1}$ our results are in good agreement with the experimental data, whereas for higher momenta a reduction of the imaginary contributions is needed.

Elastic proton scattering off non-zero spin nuclei

In recent years, we constructed a microscopic optical potential (OP) for elastic nucleon-nucleus ($NA$) scattering using modern approaches based on chiral theories for the nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interaction. The OP was derived at first order of the spectator expansion in Watson multiple scattering theory and its final expression was a folding integral between the $NN$ $t$ matrix and the nuclear density of the target. Two- and three-body forces are consistently included both in the target and in the projectile description. The purpose of this work is to apply our microscopic OP to nuclei characterized by a ground state of spin-parity quantum numbers $J^π\ne 0^+$. We extended our formalism to include the spin of the target nucleus. The full amplitudes of the $NN$ reaction matrix are retained in the calculations starting from two- and three-body chiral forces. We show a remarkable agreement with experimental data for the available observables and, simultaneously, provide reliable estimates for the theoretical uncertainties. This work paves the way toward a full microscopic approach to inelastic $NA$ scattering, showing that the derivation of optical potentials between states with $J^π\ne 0^+$ is completely under control.

Elastic Antiproton-Nucleus Scattering from Chiral Forces

Elastic scattering of antiprotons off $^4$He, $^{12}$C, and $^{16,18}$O is described for the first time with a totally microscopic approach based on the calculation of an optical potential (OP) describing the antiproton-target interaction. The OP is derived using the recent antiproton-nucleon ($\bar{p}N$) chiral interaction to calculate the $\bar{p}N$ $t$ matrix, while the target densities are computed with the ab initio no-core shell model using chiral interactions as well. Our results are in a good agreement with the existing experimental data and the results computed at different chiral orders of the $\bar{p}N$ interaction display the convergence pattern expected from the theory.

Impact of Three-Body Forces on Elastic Nucleon-Nucleus Scattering Observables

In a previous series of papers we investigated the domain of applicability of chiral potentials to the construction of a microscopic optical potential (OP) for elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering. The final expression of the OP was a folding integral between the nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) $t$ matrix and the nuclear density of the target. In these calculations $NN$ and three-nucleon ($3N$) chiral interactions were used for the target density and only the $NN$ interaction for the $NN$ $t$ matrix. The purpose of this work is to achieve another step towards the calculation of a more consistent OP introducing the $3N$ force also in the dynamic part of the OP. In the present work this is approximated with a density dependent $NN$ interaction obtained after the averaging over the Fermi sphere. In practice, in our model the $3N$ force acts as a medium correction of the bare $NN$ interaction used to calculate the $NN$ $t$ matrix. Even if the $3N$ force is treated in an approximate way, this method naturally extends our previous model of the OP and allows a direct comparison of our present and previous results. We consider as case studies the elastic scattering of nucleons off $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O. We present results for the differential cross section and the spin observables for different values of the projectile energy. From the comparison with the experimental data and with the results of our previous model we assess the importance of the $3N$ interaction in the dynamic part of the OP. Our analysis indicates that the contribution of the $3N$ force in the $t$ matrix is small for the differential cross section and it is sizable for the spin observables, in particular, for the analyzing power. A chiral expansion order-by-order analysis of the scattering observables confirms the convergence of our results at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order, as already established in our previous work.

Polarization transfer to bound protons measured by quasi-elastic electron scattering on $^{12}$C

We report the measurements of the transverse ($P'x$) and longitudinal ($P'z$) components of the polarization transfer to a bound proton in carbon via the quasi-free $^{12}{\rm C}(\vec e,e'\vec p)$ reaction, over a wide range of missing momenta. We determine these polarization-transfers separately for protons knocked out from the $s$- and $p$-shells. The electron-beam polarization was measured to determine the individual components with systematic uncertainties which allow a detailed comparison with theoretical calculations.

Neutral Current Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering. Theory

The treatment of nuclear effects in neutrino-nucleus interactions is one of the main sources of systematic uncertainty for the analysis and interpretation of data of neutrino oscillation experiments. Neutrinos interact with nuclei via charged or neutral currents and both cases must be studied to obtain a complete information. We give an overview of the theoretical work that has been done to describe nuclear effects in neutral-current neutrin onucleus scattering in the kinematic region ranging between beam energies of a few hundreds MeV to a few GeV, which is typical of most ongoing and future accelerator-based neutrino experiments, and where quasielastic scattering is the main interaction mechanism. We review the current status and challenges of the theoretical models, the role and relevance of the contributions of different nuclear effects, and the present status of the comparison between the numerical predictions of the models as well as the available experimental data. We discuss also the sensitivity to the strange form factors of the nucleon and the methods and observables that can allow one to obtain evidence for a possible strange quark contribution from measurements of neutrino and antineutrino-nucleus scattering.

Estimate of the theoretical uncertainty of the cross sections for nucleon knockout in neutral-current neutrino-oxygen interactions

Free nucleons propagating in water are known to produce gamma rays, which form a background to the searches for diffuse supernova neutrinos and sterile neutrinos carried out with Cherenkov detectors. As a consequence, the process of nucleon knockout induced by neutral-current quasielastic interactions of atmospheric (anti)neutrinos with oxygen needs to be under control at the quantitative level in the background simulations of the ongoing and future experiments. In this paper, we provide a quantitative assessment of the uncertainty associated with the theoretical description of the nuclear cross sections, estimating it from the discrepancies between the predictions of different models.

The Relativistic Green's function model and charged-current inclusive neutrino-nucleus scattering at T2K kinematics

We compare the results of the relativistic Green's function model with the experimental data of the charged-current inclusive differential neutrino-nucleus cross sections published by the T2K Collaboration. The model, which is able to describe both MINER$ν$A and MiniBooNE charged-current quasielastic scattering data, underpredicts the inclusive T2K cross sections.

Final-state interactions effects in neutral-current neutrino and antineutrino cross sections at MiniBooNE kinematics

The analysis of the recent neutral-current elastic neutrino and antineutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections measured by the MiniBooNE Collaboration requires relativistic theoretical descriptions also accounting for the role of final-state interactions. In this work we investigate the sensitivity to final-state interactions and compare the MiniBooNE data with the results obtained in the relativistic Green's function model with different parameterizations for the phenomenological relativistic optical potential.

Neutron density distribution and neutron skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb

We present and discuss numerical predictions for the neutron density distribution of $^{208}$Pb using various non-relativistic and relativistic mean-field models for the nuclear structure. Our results are compared with the very recent pion photoproduction data from Mainz. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter for elastic electron scattering at the kinematics of the PREX experiment at JLab and the neutron skin thickness are compared with the available data. We consider also the dependence between the neutron skin and the parameters of the expansion of the symmetry energy.

Recent Results of the Relativistic Green's Function Model in Quasielastic Neutrino and Antineutrino-Nucleus Scattering

The analysis of quasielastic neutrino and antineutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections requires relativistic theoretical descriptions also accounting for the role of final-state interactions (FSI). In the relativistic Green's function (RGF) model FSI are described by a complex optical potential where the imaginary part recovers the contribution of final-state channels that are not included in other models based on the impulse approximation. The RGF results are compared with the data recently published by the MiniBooNE and MINER$ν$A Collaborations. The model is in general able to give a good description of the data.

We compare the results of the relativistic Green's function model with the data recently published by the MINER$ν$A Collaboration. The model is able to describe both MINER$ν$A and MiniBooNE data.

Elastic and quasi-elastic electron scattering off nuclei with neutron excess

We present theoretical predictions for electron scattering on oxygen and calcium isotopic chains. The calculations are done within the framework of the distorted-wave Born approximation and the proton and neutron density distributions are evaluated adopting a relativistic Dirac-Hartree model. We present results for the elastic and quasi-elastic cross sections and for the parity-violating asymmetry. As a first step, the results of the models are tested in comparison with some of the data available for elastic and quasi-elastic scattering on 16O and 40Ca nuclei. Then, the evolution of some nuclear properties is investigated as a function of the neutron number. We also present a comparison with the parity-violating asymmetry parameter obtained by the PREX Collaboration on 208Pb and give a prediction for the future experiment CREX on 48Ca.

Elastic and quasi-elastic electron scattering on the N = 14, 20, and 28 isotonic chains

We present theoretical predictions for electron scattering on the N = 14, 20, and 28 isotonic chains from proton-deficient to proton-rich nuclei. The calculations are performed within the framework of the distorted-wave Born approximation and the proton and neutron density distributions are evaluated adopting a Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) approach with a density dependent meson-exchange interaction. We present results for the elastic and quasi-elastic cross sections and for the parity-violating asymmetry parameter. Owing to the correlations between the evolution of the electric charge form factors along each chain with the underlying proton shell structure of the isotones, elastic electron scattering experiments on isotones can provide useful informations about the occupation and filling of the single-particle levels of protons.

Quasielastic scattering with the Relativistic Green's Function approach

A relativistic model for quasielastic (QE) lepton-nucleus scattering is presented. The effects of final-state interactions (FSI) between the ejected nucleon and the residual nucleus are described in the relativistic Green's function (RGF) model where FSI are consistently described with exclusive scattering using a complex optical potential. The results of the model are compared with experimental results of electron and neutrino scattering.

The results of the models are compared with the MiniBooNE experimental data for neutrino scattering. Numerical predictions for flux-averaged antineutrino scattering cross sections are also presented.

In this work, we evaluate differential antineutrino-nucleus cross sections with the relativistic Green's function model, where the final-state interactions are described in the inclusive scattering consistently with the exclusive scattering using a complex optical potential. Relativistic models for quasielastic electron and neutrino-nucleus scattering

Relativistic models developed within the framework of the impulse approximation for quasielastic (QE) electron scattering and successfully tested in comparison with electron-scattering data have been extended to neutrino-nucleus scattering. Different descriptions of final-state interactions (FSI) in the inclusive scattering are compared. In the relativistic Green's function (RGF) model FSI are described consistently with the exclusive scattering using a complex optical potential. In the relativistic mean field (RMF) model FSI are described by the same RMF potential which gives the bound states. The results of the models are compared for electron and neutrino scattering and, for neutrino scattering, with the recently measured charged-current QE (CCQE) MiniBooNE cross sections.

Models for quasielastic electron and neutrino-nucleus scattering

Models developed for the exclusive and inclusive quasielastic (QE) electron-nucleus scattering have been extended to QE neutrino-nucleus scattering. Different descriptions of final-state interactions (FSI) are compared. For the inclusive electron scattering the relativistic Green's function model (RGF) is compared with a model based on the use of relativistic purely real mean field (RMF) potentials in the final state. Both approaches lead to a redistribution of the strength but conserving the total flux. Results for electron and neutrino scattering are presented and discussed in different conditions and kinematics. The results of the RGF and RMF models are compared with the double-differential charged-current QE neutrino cross sections recently measured by the MiniBooNE collaboration using a carbon target.
