Inverse Ingham type inequalities for the Burgers model

Viscoelastic materials have the properties both of elasticity and viscosity. In a previous work we investigate glass relaxation in the framework of viscoelasticity. Here we consider the Burgers model, a first but meaningful step in the general analysis, showing a reachability theorem thanks the analysis of the gap between eigenvalues and the representation of the solution in Fourier series.

Topology of univoque sets in real base expansions

Given a positive integer $M$ and a real number $q \in (1,M+1]$, an expansion of a real number $x \in \left[0,M/(q-1)\right]$ over the alphabet $A=\{0,1,\ldots,M\}$ is a sequence $(c_i) \in A^{\mathbb N}$ such that $x=\sum_{i=1}^{\infty}c_iq^{-i}$. Generalizing many earlier results, we investigate in this paper the topological properties of the set $U_q$ consisting of numbers $x$ having a unique expansion of this form, and the combinatorial properties of the set $U_q'$ consisting of their corresponding expansions. We also provide shorter proofs of the main results of Baker in [B] by adapting the method given in [EJK] for the case $M=1$.

Constrained reachability problems for a planar manipulator

We address an optimal reachability problem for a planar manipulator in a constrained environment. After introducing the optmization problem in full generality, we practically embed the geometry of the workspace in the problem, by considering some classes of obstacles. To this end, we present an analytical approximation of the distance function from the ellipse. We then apply our method to particular models of hyper-redundant and soft manipulators, by also presenting some numerical experiments.

Fractional SIS epidemic models

In this paper we consider the fractional SIS epidemic model ($α$-SIS model) in the case of constant population size. We provide a representation of the explicit solution to the fractional model and we illustrate the results by numerical schemes. A comparison with the limit case when the fractional order $α\uparrow 1$ (the SIS model) is also given. We analyse the effects of the fractional derivatives by comparing the SIS and the $α$-SIS models.

Optimal reachability and grasping for a soft manipulator

We investigate optimal reachability and grasping problems for a planar soft manipulator, from both a theoretical and numerical point of view. The underlying control model describes the evolution of the symmetry axis of the device, which is subject to inextensibility and curvature constraints, a bending moment and a curvature control. Optimal control strategies are characterized with tools coming from the optimal control theory of PDEs. We run some numerical tests in order to validate the model and to synthetize optimal control strategies.

Time memory effect in entropy decay of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators

We investigate the effect of memory terms on the entropy decay of the solutions to equations with Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators. Our assumptions on the memory kernels include Caputo-Fabrizio operators and, more generally, the stretched exponential functions. We establish a sharp rate decay for the entropy. Examples and numerical simulations are also given to illustrate the results.

A Mathematical Model for Signal's Energy at the Output of an Ideal DAC

The presented research work considers a mathematical model for energy of the signal at the output of an ideal DAC, in presence of sampling clock jitter. When sampling clock jitter occurs, the energy of the signal at the output of ideal DAC does not satisfies a Parseval identity. Nevertheless, an estimation of the signal energy is here shown by a direct method involving sinc functions.

Ingham type inequalities in lattices

A classical theorem of Ingham extended Parseval's formula of the trigonometrical system to arbitrary families of exponentials satisfying a uniform gap condition. Later his result was extended to several dimensions, but the optimal integration domains have only been determined in very few cases. The purpose of this paper is to determine the optimal connected integration domains for all regular two-dimensional lattices.

Kadec-1/4 Theorem for Sinc Bases

In this paper we show two results. In the first result we consider $λ_n-n=\frac{A}{n^α}$ for $n\in\mathbb N$; if $α>1/2$ and $0<A<\frac{1}{π\sqrt{2 \sqrt{2}ζ(2α)}}$, the system $\left\{\operatorname{sinc}( λ_n - t)\right\}_{n\in\mathbb N}$ is a Riesz basis for $PW_π$. With the second result, we study the stability of $\left\{\operatorname{sinc}( λ_n - t)\right\}_{n\in\mathbb Z}$ for $λ_n\in\mathbb C$; if $|λ_n-n|\leqq L<\frac{1}π\, \sqrt\frac{3α}{8}$, for all $n\in\mathbb Z$, then $\{\operatorname{sinc}(λ_n-t)\}_{n\in\mathbb Z}$ forms a Riesz basis for $PW_π$. Here $α$ is the Lamb-Oseen constant.

A Fibonacci control system with application to hyper-redundant manipulators

We study a robot snake model based on a discrete linear control system involving Fibonacci sequence and closely related to the theory of expansions in non-integer bases. The present paper includes an investigation of the reachable workspace, a more general analysis of the control system underlying the model, its reachability and local controllability properties and the relation with expansions in non-integer bases and with iterated function systems.

A control model for zygodactyl bird's foot

In this paper we are interested to the zygodactyly phenomenon in birds, and in particolar in parrots. This arrangement, common in species living on trees, is a distribution of the foot with two toes facing forward and two back. We give a model for the foot, and thanks to the methods of iterated function system we are able to describe the reachability set. Moreover we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the grasping problem. Finally we introduce a hybrid dynamical system modeling owl's foot in various stages of hunting (flying, attack, grasp).

Hypercontractivity of a semi-Lagrangian scheme for Hamilton-Jacobi equations

The equivalence between logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and hypercontractivity of solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations has been proved in [5]. We consider a semi-Lagrangian approximation scheme for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and we prove that the solution of the discrete problem satisfies a hypercontractivity estimate. We apply this property to obtain an error estimate of the set where the truncation error is concentrated.

Multi-Time Systems of Conservation Laws

Motivated by the work of P.L. Lions and J-C. Rochet [12], concerning multi-time Hamilton-Jacobi equations, we introduce the theory of multi-time systems of conservation laws. We show the existence and uniqueness of solution to the Cauchy problem for a system of multi-time conservation laws with two independent time variables in one space dimension. Our proof relies on a suitable generalization of the Lax-Oleinik formula.

Observability of rectangular membranes and plates on small sets

Since the works of Haraux and Jaffard we know that rectangular plates may be observed by subregions not satisfying the geometrical control condition. We improve these results by observing only on an arbitrarily short segment inside the domain. The estimates may be strengthened by observing on several well-chosen segments. In the second part of the paper we establish various observability theorems for rectangular membranes by applying Mehrenberger's recent generalization of Ingham's theorem.

Large time behavior of weakly coupled systems of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations

We show a large time behavior result for class of weakly coupled systems of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations in the periodic setting. We use a PDE approach to extend the convergence result proved by Namah and Roquejoffre (1999) in the scalar case. Our proof is based on new comparison, existence and regularity results for systems. An interpretation of the solution of the system in terms of an optimal control problem with switching is given.

Optimal expansions in non-integer bases

For a given positive integer $m$, let $A=\set{0,1,...,m}$ and $q \in (m,m+1)$. A sequence $(c_i)=c_1c_2 ...$ consisting of elements in $A$ is called an expansion of $x$ if $\sum_{i=1}^{\infty} c_i q^{-i}=x$. It is known that almost every $x$ belonging to the interval $[0,m/(q-1)]$ has uncountably many expansions. In this paper we study the existence of expansions $(d_i)$ of $x$ satisfying the inequalities $\sum_{i=1}^n d_iq^{-i} \geq \sum_{i=1}^n c_i q^{-i}$, $n=1,2,...$ for each expansion $(c_i)$ of $x$.
