Topology of univoque sets in real base expansions

Given a positive integer $M$ and a real number $q \in (1,M+1]$, an expansion of a real number $x \in \left[0,M/(q-1)\right]$ over the alphabet $A=\{0,1,\ldots,M\}$ is a sequence $(c_i) \in A^{\mathbb N}$ such that $x=\sum_{i=1}^{\infty}c_iq^{-i}$. Generalizing many earlier results, we investigate in this paper the topological properties of the set $U_q$ consisting of numbers $x$ having a unique expansion of this form, and the combinatorial properties of the set $U_q'$ consisting of their corresponding expansions. We also provide shorter proofs of the main results of Baker in [B] by adapting the method given in [EJK] for the case $M=1$.

Expansions in multiple bases over general alphabets

Expansions in non-integer bases have been extensively investigated since a pioneering work of Rényi. We introduce a more general framework of alphabet-base systems that also includes Pedicini's general alphabets and the multiple-base expansions of Neunhäuserer and Li. We extend the Parry type lexicographic theory to this setup, and we improve and generalize various former results on unique expansions.

Difference of Cantor sets and frequencies in Thue--Morse type sequences

In a recent paper, Baker and Kong have studied the Hausdorff dimension of the intersection of Cantor sets with their translations. We extend their results to more general Cantor sets. The proofs rely on the frequencies of digits in unique expansions in non-integer bases. In relation with this, we introduce a practical method to determine the frequency of any given finite block in Thue--Morse type sequences.

Ingham type inequalities in lattices

A classical theorem of Ingham extended Parseval's formula of the trigonometrical system to arbitrary families of exponentials satisfying a uniform gap condition. Later his result was extended to several dimensions, but the optimal integration domains have only been determined in very few cases. The purpose of this paper is to determine the optimal connected integration domains for all regular two-dimensional lattices.

Hausdorff dimension of univoque sets and Devil's staircase

We fix a positive integer $M$, and we consider expansions in arbitrary real bases $q>1$ over the alphabet $\{0,1,...,M\}$. We denote by $U_q$ the set of real numbers having a unique expansion. Completing many former investigations, we give a formula for the Hausdorff dimension $D(q)$ of $U_q$ for each $q\in (1,\infty)$. Furthermore, we prove that the dimension function $D:(1,\infty)\to[0,1]$ is continuous, and has a bounded variation. Moreover, it has a Devil's staircase behavior in $(q',\infty)$, where $q'$ denotes the Komornik--Loreti constant: although $D(q)>D(q')$ for all $q>q'$, we have $D'<0$ a.e. in $(q',\infty)$. During the proofs we improve and generalize a theorem of Erdős et al. on the existence of large blocks of zeros in $β$-expansions, and we determine for all $M$ the Lebesgue measure and the Hausdorff dimension of the set of bases in which $x=1$ has a unique expansion.

Observability of rectangular membranes and plates on small sets

Since the works of Haraux and Jaffard we know that rectangular plates may be observed by subregions not satisfying the geometrical control condition. We improve these results by observing only on an arbitrarily short segment inside the domain. The estimates may be strengthened by observing on several well-chosen segments. In the second part of the paper we establish various observability theorems for rectangular membranes by applying Mehrenberger's recent generalization of Ingham's theorem.

Discrete spectra and Pisot numbers

By the m-spectrum of a real number q>1 we mean the set Y^m(q) of values p(q) where p runs over the height m polynomials with integer coefficients. These sets have been extensively investigated during the last fifty years because of their intimate connections with infinite Bernoulli convolutions, spectral properties of substitutive point sets and expansions in noninteger bases. We prove that Y^m(q) has an accumulation point if and only if q<m+1 and q is not a Pisot number. Consequently a number of related results on the distribution of points of this form are improved.

Optimal expansions in non-integer bases

For a given positive integer $m$, let $A=\set{0,1,...,m}$ and $q \in (m,m+1)$. A sequence $(c_i)=c_1c_2 ...$ consisting of elements in $A$ is called an expansion of $x$ if $\sum_{i=1}^{\infty} c_i q^{-i}=x$. It is known that almost every $x$ belonging to the interval $[0,m/(q-1)]$ has uncountably many expansions. In this paper we study the existence of expansions $(d_i)$ of $x$ satisfying the inequalities $\sum_{i=1}^n d_iq^{-i} \geq \sum_{i=1}^n c_i q^{-i}$, $n=1,2,...$ for each expansion $(c_i)$ of $x$.

A two-dimensional univoque set

Let $\mathbf{J} \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ be the set of couples $(x,q)$ with $q>1$ such that $x$ has at least one representation of the form $x=\sum_{i=1}^{\infty} c_i q^{-i}$ with integer coefficients $c_i$ satisfying $0 \leq c_i < q$, $i \ge 1$. In this case we say that $(c_i)=c_1c_2...$ is an expansion of $x$ in base $q$. Let $\mathbf{U}$ be the set of couples $(x,q) \in \mathbf{J}$ such that $x$ has exactly one expansion in base $q$. In this paper we deduce some topological and combinatorial properties of the set $\mathbf{U}$. We characterize the closure of $\mathbf{U}$, and we determine its Hausdorff dimension. For $(x,q) \in \mathbf{J}$, we also prove new properties of the lexicographically largest expansion of $x$ in base $q$.

Stable schedule matchings by a fixed point method

We generalize several schedule matching theorems of Baiou-Balinski (Math. Oper. Res., 27 (2002), 485) and Alkan-Gale (J. Econ. Th. 112 (2003), 289) by applying a fixed point method of Fleiner (Math. Oper. Res., 28 (2003), 103). Thanks to a more general construction of revealing choice maps we develop an algorithm to solve rather complex matching problems. The flexibility and efficiency of our approach is illustrated by various examples. We also revisit the mathematical structure of the matching theory by comparing various definitions of stable sets and various classes of choice maps. We demonstrate, by several examples, that the revealing property of the choice maps is the most suitable one to ensure the existence of stable matchings; both from the theoretical and the practical point of view.
