On Higher Graph Manifolds

In this short note we introduce higher graph manifolds and use a version of the barycenter technique to characterize when they undergo volume collapse. In the case when the pure pieces are hyperbolic, we compute the exact value of the minimal volume. We verify the coarse Baum--Connes conjecture for these manifolds and show that they do not admit positive scalar curvature metrics. In the case without any pure pieces, we show the Yamabe invariant vanishes.

Maximal volume entropy rigidity for $\mathsf{RCD}^*(-(N-1),N)$ spaces

For $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds $M$ with Ricci curvature bounded below by $-(n-1)$, the volume entropy is bounded above by $n-1$. If $M$ is compact, it is known that the equality holds if and only if $M$ is hyperbolic. We extend this result to $\mathsf{RCD}^{\ast}(-(N-1),N)$ spaces. While the upper bound is straightforward, the rigidity case is quite involved due to the lack of a smooth structure in $\mathsf{RCD}^{\ast}$ spaces. As an application we obtain an almost rigidity result which partially recovers a result by Cheng-Rong-Xu for Riemannian manifolds.

On the influence of social bots in online protests. Preliminary findings of a Mexican case study

Social bots can affect online communication among humans. We study this phenomenon by focusing on #YaMeCanse, the most active protest hashtag in the history of Twitter in Mexico. Accounts using the hashtag are classified using the BotOrNot bot detection tool. Our preliminary analysis suggests that bots played a critical role in disrupting online communication about the protest movement.

A note on collapse, entropy, and vanishing of the Yamabe invariant of symplectic 4-manifolds

We make use of $\mathcal{F}$-structures and technology developed by Paternain - Petean to compute minimal entropy, minimal volume, and Yamabe invariant of symplectic 4-manifolds, as well as to study their collapse with sectional curvature bounded from below. À la Gompf, we show that these invariants vanish on symplectic 4-manifolds that realize any given finitely presented group as their fundamental group. We extend to the symplectic realm a result of LeBrun which relates the Kodaira dimension with the Yamabe invariant of compact complex surfaces.

An essential relation between Einstein metrics, volume entropy, and exotic smooth structures

We show that the minimal volume entropy of closed manifolds remains unaffected when nonessential manifolds are added in a connected sum. We combine this result with the stable cohomotopy invariant of Bauer-Furuta in order to present an infinite family of four-manifolds with the following properties: 1) They have positive minimal volume entropy. 2) They satisfy a strict version of the Gromov-Hitchin-Thorpe inequality, with a minimal volume entropy term. 3) They nevertheless admit infinitely many distinct smooth structures for which no compatible Einstein metric exists.

Minimal entropy and geometric decompositions in dimension four

We show vanishing results about the infimum of the topological entropy of the geodesic flow of homogeneous smooth four manifolds. We prove that any closed oriented geometric four manifold has zero minimal entropy if and only if it has zero simplicial volume. We also show that if a four manifold M admits a geometric decomposition, in the sense of Thurston, and does not have geometric pieces modelled on hyperbolic four-space, the complex hyperbolic plane or the product of two hyperbolic planes, then M admits an F-structure. It follows that M has zero minimal entropy and collapses with curvature bounded from below. We then analyse whether or not M admits a metric whose topological entropy coincides with the minimal entropy of M and provide new examples of manifolds for which the minimal entropy problem cannot be solved.

Perelman's invariant and collapse via geometric characteristic splittings

Any closed orientable and smooth non-positively curved manifold M is known to admit a geometric characteristic splitting, analogous to the JSJ decomposition in three dimensions. We show that when this splitting consists of pieces which are Seifert fibered or pieces each of whose fundamental group has non-trivial centre, M collapses with bounded curvature and has zero Perelman invariant.
