Ultra-high finesse cavity-enhanced spectroscopy for accurate tests of quantum electrodynamics for molecules

We report the most accurate measurement of the position of the weak quadrupole S(2) 2-0 line in D2_2. The spectra were collected with a frequency-stabilized cavity ring-down spectrometer (FS-CRDS) with an ultra-high finesse optical cavity (F\mathcal{F} = 637 000) and operating in the frequency-agile, rapid scanning spectroscopy (FARS) mode. Despite working in the Doppler-limited regime, we reached 40 kHz of statistical uncertainty and 161 kHz of absolute accuracy, achieving the highest accuracy for homonuclear isotopologues of molecular hydrogen. The accuracy of our measurement corresponds to the fifth significant digit of the leading term in QED correction. We observe 2.3σσ discrepancy with the recent theoretical value.

Precision measurements and test of molecular theory in highly-excited vibrational states of H2_2 (v=11)(v=11)

Accurate EF1Σg+−X1Σg+EF{}^1Σ^+_g-X{}^1Σ^+_g transition energies in molecular hydrogen were determined for transitions originating from levels with highly-excited vibrational quantum number, v=11v=11, in the ground electronic state. Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy was applied on vibrationally excited H2∗_2^*, produced via the photodissociation of H2_2S, yielding transition frequencies with accuracies of 4545 MHz or 0.00150.0015 cm−1^{-1}. An important improvement is the enhanced detection efficiency by resonant excitation to autoionizing 7pπ7pπ electronic Rydberg states, resulting in narrow transitions due to reduced ac-Stark effects. Using known EFEF level energies, the level energies of X(v=11,J=1,3−5)X(v=11, J=1,3-5) states are derived with accuracies of typically 0.002 cm−1^{-1}. These experimental values are in excellent agreement with, and are more accurate than the results obtained from the most advanced ab initio molecular theory calculations including relativistic and QED contributions.

Strontium optical lattice clocks for practical realization of the metre and secondary representation of the second

We present a system of two independent strontium optical lattice standards probed with a single shared ultra-narrow laser. The absolute frequency of the clocks can be verified by the use of Er:fiber optical frequency comb with the GPS-disciplined Rb frequency standard. We report hertz-level spectroscopy of the clock line and measurements of frequency stability of the two strontium optical lattice clocks.
