Thermodynamics and Dynamic Stability: Extended Theories of Heat Conduction

The fundamental dynamic stability of heat conduction theories beyond Fourier is analyzed in the framework of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. It is shown, that the thermodynamic framework, concave entropy and nonnegative entropy production, can ensure the stability of homogeneous thermodynamic equilibrium. Various special heat conduction theories of Extended Thermodynamics are compared and analysed in the general framework.

Report on a pre-earthquake signal detection by enhanced Eötvös torsion balance

More than 30 minutes before the earthquake event in Florina, Greece at 21:43:47(UTC) on 9th January 2022 an enhanced Eötvös torsion balance registered unidentified signals in the Jánossy Underground Research Laboratory in Budapest, Hungary. These signals were not visible on the seismograms, although seismic noises are continuously recorded by a side-by-side broadband seismometer. Moreover, seismological stations did not detect anything unusual, they presented a negative confirmation of the events. Our observation suggests that torsion balances might effectively detect precursory earthquake signals from a considerable distance. Such a finding could trigger the development of new observational devices and networks and can provide novel knowledge about the origin and mechanism of earthquake phenomena.

Generalized ballistic-conductive heat conduction in isotropic materials

The general isotropic constitutive equations of heat conduction with second sound and ballistic propagation in isotropic materials is given using Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics with Internal Variables (NET-IV). The consequences of Onsager reciprocity between thermodynamic fluxes and forces and positive definiteness of the entropy production is considered. The relation to theories of Extended Thermodynamics is discussed in detail.

Splitting the source term for the Einstein equation to classical and quantum parts

We consider the special and general relativistic extensions of the action principle behind the Schrödinger equation distinguishing classical and quantum contributions. Postulating a particular quantum correction to the source term in the classical Einstein equation we identify the conformal content of the above action and obtain classical gravitation for massive particles, but with a cosmological term representing off-mass-shell contribution to the energy-momentum tensor. In this scenario the - on the Planck scale surprisingly small - cosmological constant stems from quantum bound states (gravonium) having a Bohr radius $a$ as being Λ=3/a^2.

Distinguished rheological models in the framework of a thermodynamical internal variable theory

We present and analyze a thermodynamical theory of rheology with single internal variable. The universality of the model is ensured as long as the mesoscopic and/or microscopic background processes satisfy the applied thermodynamical principles, which are the second law, the basic balances and the existence of an additional-tensorial-state variable. The resulting model, which we suggest to call the Kluitenberg-Verhás body, is the Poynting-Thomson-Zener body with an additional inertial element, or, in other words, is the extension of Jeffreys model to solids. We argue that this Kluitenberg-Verhás body is the natural thermodynamical building block of rheology. An important feature of the presented methodology is that nontrivial inequality-type restrictions arise for the four parameters of the model. We compare these conditions and other aspects to those of other known thermodynamical approaches, like Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics or the original theory of Kluitenberg.

Generalized heat conduction in heat pulse experiments

A novel equation of heat conduction is derived with the help of a generalized entropy current and internal variables. The obtained system of constitutive relations is compatible with the momentum series expansion of the kinetic theory. The well known Fourier, Maxwell-Cattaneo-Vernotte, Guyer-Krumhansl, Jeffreys-type, and Cahn-Hilliard type equations are derived as special cases. Some remarkable properties of solutions of the general equation are demonstrated with heat pulse initial and boundary conditions. A simple numerical method is developed and its stability is proved. Apparent faster than Fourier pulse propagation is calculated in the over-diffusion regime.

Statistical Power-Law Spectra due to Reservoir Fluctuations

LHC ALICE data are interpreted in terms of statistical power-law tailed pT spectra. As explanation we derive such statistical distributions for particular particle number fluctuation patterns in a finite heat bath exactly, and for general thermodynamical systems in the subleading canonical expansion approximately. Our general result, $q = 1 - 1/C + ΔT^2 / T^2$, demonstrates how the heat capacity and the temperature fluctuation effects compete, and cancel only in the standard Gaussian approximation.

Thermodynamic Approach to Generalized Continua

Governing equations of dissipative generalized solid mechanics are derived by thermodynamic methods in the Piola-Kirchhoff framework using the Liu procedure. The isotropic small strain case is investigated in more detail. The connection to the Ginzburg-Landau type evolution, dual internal variables, and a thermodynamic generalization of the standard linear solid model of rheology is demonstrated. Specific examples are chosen to emphasize experimental confirmations and predictions beyond less general approaches.

Thermodynamic aspects of rock friction

Rate- and state-dependent friction law for velocity-step tests is analyzed from a thermodynamic point of view. A simple macroscopic non-equilibrium thermodynamic model with a single internal variable reproduces instantaneous jump and relaxation. Velocity weakening appears as a consequence of a plasticity related nonlinear coefficient. Permanent part of displacement corresponds to plastic strain, and relaxation effects are analogous to creep in thermodynamic rheology.

Thermodynamic hierarchies of evolution equations

Non-equilibrium thermodynamics with internal variables introduces a natural hierarchical arrangement of evolution equations. Three examples are shown: a hierarchy of linear constitutive equations in thermodynamic rhelogy with a single internal variable, a hierarchy of wave equations in the theory of generalized continua with dual internal variables and a hierarchical arrangement of the Fourier equation in the theory of heat conduction with current multipliers.

Dissipation flow-frames: particle, energy, thermometer

We associate the following physical co-mover conditions of to different frame choices: i) Eckart: particle flow, ii) Landau-Lifshitz: energy flow, iii) Jüttner: moving thermometer frame. The role of fixing a flow-frame is analysed with respect to local equilibrium concentrating on dissipative currents and forces in single component relativistic fluids. The special role of a "Jüttner frame" is explored and contrasted to the more common Eckart and Landau-Lifshitz choices.

Thermodynamics and flow-frames for dissipative relativistic fluids

A general thermodynamic treatment of dissipative relativistic fluids is introduced, where the temperature four vector is not parallel to the velocity field of the fluid. Generic stability and kinetic equilibrium points out a particular thermodynamics, where the temperature vector is parallel to the enthalpy flow vector and the choice of the flow fixes the constitutive functions for viscous stress and heat. The linear stability of the homogeneous equilibrium is proved in a mixed particle-energy flow-frame.

Kinematic quantities of finite elastic and plastic deformation

Kinematic quantities for finite elastic and plastic deformations are defined via an approach that does not rely on auxiliary elements like reference frame and reference configuration, and that gives account of the inertial-noninertial aspects explicitly. These features are achieved by working on Galilean spacetime directly. The quantity expressing elastic deformations is introduced according to its expected role: to measure how different the current metric is from the relaxed/stressless metric. Further, the plastic kinematic quantity is the change rate of the stressless metric. The properties of both are analyzed, and their relationship to frequently used elastic and plastic kinematic quantities is discussed. One important result is that no objective elastic or plastic quantities can be defined from deformation gradient.

Nonadditive thermostatistics and thermodynamics

Nonadditive composition rules for several physical quantities are treated in thermodynamics. It is argued that the zeroth law defines the existence of their additive forms, the formal logarithms. A further principle, the universal thermostat independence leads to a particular formal logarithm, equivalent to Tsallis entropy S_q. We connect q with generalized susceptibilities of the thermostat.

Sensitivity analysis of GSI based mechanical characterization of rock mass

Recently, the rock mechanical and rock engineering designs and calculations are frequently based on Geological Strength Index (GSI) method, because it is the only system that provides a complete set of mechanical properties for design purpose. Both the failure criteria and the deformation moduli of the rock mass can be calculated with GSI based equations, which consists of the disturbance factor, as well. The aim of this paper is the sensitivity analysis of GSI and disturbance factor dependent equations that characterize the mechanical properties of rock masses. The survey of the GSI system is not our purpose. The results show that the rock mass strength calculated by the Hoek-Brown failure criteria and both the Hoek-Diederichs and modified Hoek-Diederichs deformation moduli are highly sensitive to changes of both the GSI and the D factor, hence their exact determination is important for the rock engineering design.

Thermodynamic Derivation of the Tsallis and Rényi Entropy Formulas and the Temperature of Quark-Gluon Plasma

We derive Tsallis entropy, Sq, from universal thermostat independence and obtain the functional form of the corresponding generalized entropy-probability relation. Our result for finite thermostats interprets thermodynamically the subsystem temperature, T1, and the index q in terms of the temperature, T, entropy, S, and heat capacity, C of the reservoir as T1 = T exp(-S/C) and q = 1 - 1/C. In the infinite C limit, irrespective to the value of S, the Boltzmann-Gibbs approach is fully recovered. We apply this framework for the experimental determination of the original temperature of a finite thermostat, T, from the analysis of hadron spectra produced in high energy collisions, by analyzing frequently considered simple models of the quark-gluon plasma.

Universal heat conduction -- the thermodynamics of some weakly nonlocal theories

A linear irreversible thermodynamic framework of heat conduction in rigid conductors is introduced. The deviation from local equilibrium is characterized by a single internal variable and a current intensity factor. A general constitutive evolution equation of the current density of the internal energy is derived by introducing linear relationship between the thermodynamic forces and fluxes. The Fourier, Maxwell-Cattaneo-Vernotte, Guyer-Krumhansl, Jeffreys type and Green-Naghdi type equations of heat conduction are obtained as special cases. The universal character of the approach is demonstrated by two examples. Solutions illustrating the properties of the equation with jump boundary conditions are given.

Zeroth Law compatibility of non-additive thermodynamics

Non-extensive thermodynamics was criticized among others by stating that the Zeroth Law cannot be satisfied with non-additive composition rules. In this paper we determine the general functional form of those non-additive composition rules which are compatible with the Zeroth Law of thermodynamics. We find that this general form is additive for the formal logarithms of the original quantities and the familiar relations of thermodynamics apply to these. Our result offers a possible solution to the longstanding problem about equilibrium between extensive and non-extensive systems or systems with different non-extensivity parameters.

Weakly nonlocal non-equilibrium thermodynamics - variational principles and Second Law

A general, uniform, rigorous and constructive thermodynamic approach to weakly nonlocal non-equilibrium thermodynamics is reviewed. A method is given to construct and restrict the evolution equations of physical theories according to the Second Law of thermodynamics and considering weakly nonlocal constitutive state spaces. The evolution equations of internal variables, the classical irreversible thermodynamics and Korteweg fluids are treated.

A thermodynamic approach to the relaxation of viscosity and thermal conductivity

A novel higher order theory of relaxation of heat and viscosity is proposed based on corrections to the traditional treatment of the relativistic energy density. In the framework of generalized Bjorken scaling solution to accelerating longitudinal flow we point out that the energy flux can be consequently set to zero in the stationary case, independently of the choice of a specific local rest frame, like the Landau-Lifshitz or Eckart one. We investigate and compare several cooling and re-heating scenarios for the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) within this approach.

Generic stability of dissipative non-relativistic and relativistic fluids

The linear stability of the homogeneous equilibrium of non-relativistic fluids with mass flux and special relativistic fluids with the absolute value of the energy vector as internal energy is investigated. It is proved that the equilibrium is asymptotically stable in both cases due to purely thermodynamic restrictions; the only requirements are the thermodynamic stability and the nonnegativity of the transport coefficients.

Scalar, vectorial and tensorial damage parameters from the mesoscopic background

In the mesoscopic theory a distribution of different crack sizes and crack orientations is introduced. A scalar damage parameter, a second order damage tensor and a vectorial damage parameter are defined in terms of this distribution function. As an example of a constitutive quantity the free energy density is given as a function of the damage tensor. This equation is reduced in the uniaxial case to a function of the damage vector and in case of a special geometry to a function of the scalar damage parameter.
