Report on a pre-earthquake signal detection by enhanced Eötvös torsion balance

More than 30 minutes before the earthquake event in Florina, Greece at 21:43:47(UTC) on 9th January 2022 an enhanced Eötvös torsion balance registered unidentified signals in the Jánossy Underground Research Laboratory in Budapest, Hungary. These signals were not visible on the seismograms, although seismic noises are continuously recorded by a side-by-side broadband seismometer. Moreover, seismological stations did not detect anything unusual, they presented a negative confirmation of the events. Our observation suggests that torsion balances might effectively detect precursory earthquake signals from a considerable distance. Such a finding could trigger the development of new observational devices and networks and can provide novel knowledge about the origin and mechanism of earthquake phenomena.

$v_2$ of charged hadrons in a`soft + hard' model for PbPb collisions at $\sqrt s$ = 2.76 ATeV

We describe transverse spectra as well as azimuthal anisotropy ($v_2$) of charged hadrons stemming from various centrality PbPb collisions at $\sqrt s$ = 2.76 ATeV analytically in a `soft + hard' model. In this model, we propose that hadron yields produced in heavy-ion collisions are simply the sum of yields stemming from jets (hard yields) and yields stemming from the Quark-Gluon Plasma (soft yields). The hadron spectra in both types of yields are approximated by the Tsallis distribution. It is found that the anisotropy decreases for more central collisions.

A `soft + hard' model for heavy-ion collisions

We describe the spectra of neutral pions stemming from AuAu collisions at $\sqrt s$ = 200 AGeV in a `soft + hard' model. The model is based on the assumptions that hadrons stemming from hard processes are described via perturbative quantum chromodynamics improved parton model calculations, while those stemming from the Quark-Gluon Plasma (we refer to as soft yields) can be described in a super-statistical model induced by multiplicity fluctuations. The obtained dependence of the parameters of the model on the event centrality is compared to what is observed in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt s$ = 2.76 ATeV.

Monte Carlo Studies of Identified Two-particle Correlations in p-p and Pb-Pb Collisions

Azimuthal particle correlations have been extensively studied in the past at various collider energies in p-p, p-A, and A-A collisions. Hadron-correlation measurements in heavy-ion collisions have mainly focused on studies of collective (flow) effects at low-$p_T$ and parton energy loss via jet quenching in the high-$p_T$ regime. This was usually done without event-by-event particle identification. In this paper, we present two-particle correlations with identified trigger hadrons and identified associated hadrons at mid-rapidity in Monte Carlo generated events. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of quantum number conservation and the flavour balance during parton fragmentation and hadronization. The simulated p-p events were generated with PYTHIA 6.4 with the Perugia-0 tune at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. HIJING was used to generate $0-10\%$ central Pb-Pb events at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV. We found that the extracted identified associated hadron spectra for charged pion, kaon, and proton show identified trigger-hadron dependent splitting. Moreover, the identified trigger-hadron dependent correlation functions vary in different $p_T$ bins, which may show the presence of collective/nuclear effects.

Statistical Power-Law Spectra due to Reservoir Fluctuations

LHC ALICE data are interpreted in terms of statistical power-law tailed pT spectra. As explanation we derive such statistical distributions for particular particle number fluctuation patterns in a finite heat bath exactly, and for general thermodynamical systems in the subleading canonical expansion approximately. Our general result, $q = 1 - 1/C + ΔT^2 / T^2$, demonstrates how the heat capacity and the temperature fluctuation effects compete, and cancel only in the standard Gaussian approximation.

Microcanonical Jet-fragmentation in proton-proton collisions at LHC Energy

In this paper, we show that the distribution of the longitudinal momentum fraction of charged hadrons $dN/dz$ inside jets stemming from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV center of mass energy can be described by a statistical jet-fragmentation model. This model combines microcanonical statistics and super-statistics induced by multiplicity fluctuations. The resulting scale dependence of the parameters of the model turns out to be similar to what was observed in electron-positron annihilations in Urmossy, Barnaföldi, and Biró.

Nonadditive thermostatistics and thermodynamics

Nonadditive composition rules for several physical quantities are treated in thermodynamics. It is argued that the zeroth law defines the existence of their additive forms, the formal logarithms. A further principle, the universal thermostat independence leads to a particular formal logarithm, equivalent to Tsallis entropy S_q. We connect q with generalized susceptibilities of the thermostat.

Thermodynamic Derivation of the Tsallis and Rényi Entropy Formulas and the Temperature of Quark-Gluon Plasma

We derive Tsallis entropy, Sq, from universal thermostat independence and obtain the functional form of the corresponding generalized entropy-probability relation. Our result for finite thermostats interprets thermodynamically the subsystem temperature, T1, and the index q in terms of the temperature, T, entropy, S, and heat capacity, C of the reservoir as T1 = T exp(-S/C) and q = 1 - 1/C. In the infinite C limit, irrespective to the value of S, the Boltzmann-Gibbs approach is fully recovered. We apply this framework for the experimental determination of the original temperature of a finite thermostat, T, from the analysis of hadron spectra produced in high energy collisions, by analyzing frequently considered simple models of the quark-gluon plasma.

Underlying Event in pp Collisions at LHC Energies

Hadron production is investigated in proton-proton (pp) collisions at \surds = 7 TeV LHC energy - especially outside the cones of identified jets. We improved the original CDF definition of underlying event and introduce surrounding rings/belts (SB) around the cone of identified jets. We compare the characteristics of hadron production using the original CDF-based and the new SB-based via analysing PYTHIA generated fluxes of these hadrons within the geometrical regions of pp collisions.

VHMPID: a new detector for the ALICE experiment at LHC

This article presents the basic idea of VHMPID, an upgrade detector for the ALICE experiment at LHC, CERN. The main goal of this detector is to extend the particle identification capabilities of ALICE to give more insight into the evolution of the hot and dense matter created in Pb-Pb collisions. Starting from the physics motivations and working principles the challenges and current status of development is detailed.

Jets and Underlying Events at LHC Energies

Jet-matter interaction remains a central question and a theoretical challenge in heavy-ion physics and might become important in high-multiplicity events in proton-proton collisions at LHC energies. Full jet measurement at LHC offer the proper tool to investigate energy loss process and fragmentation of hard parton in the medium. Since jet reconstruction will be constrained to small cone sizes, then study of the connection between jets and surrounding environment provides a further possibility to extend our exploration. We study jets at s = (14 TeV)^2 and pp collisions at s = (7 TeV)^2. We analyze the flavor components in jet-like environments. We introduce a definition for surrounding cones/belts and investigate flavor dependence and correlation of different hadron species produced in jets. Here, we focus on proton-triggered correlations. Our analysis can be extended for heavy ion collisions.

Jet Tomography in the Forward Direction at RHIC

Hadron production at high-$p_T$ displays a strong suppression pattern in a wide rapidity region in heavy ion collisions at RHIC energies. This finding indicates the presence of strong final state effects for both transversally and longitudinally traveling partons, namely induced energy loss. We have developed a perturbative QCD based model to describe hadron production in $pp$ collision, which can be combined with the Glauber -- Gribov model to describe hadron production in heavy ion collisions. Investigating $AuAu$ and $CuCu$ collisions at energy $\sqrt{s}=200$ $A$GeV at mid-rapidity, we find the opacity of the strongly interacting hot matter to be proportional to the participant nucleon number. Considering forward rapidities, the suppression pattern indicates the formation of a longitudinally contracted dense deconfined zone in central heavy ion collisions. We determine parameters for the initial geometry from the existing data.
