Electric-field-driven resistive transition in multiferroic SrCo$_2$Fe$_{16}$O$_{27}$/Sr$_3$Co$_2$Fe$_{24}$O$_{41}$composite

We report observation of electric-field-driven resistive transition at a characteristic threshold field $E_{th}(T)$ across a temperature range 10-200 K in an off-stoichiometric composite of (~80 vol%) W- and (~20 vol%) Z-type hexaferrites. The dielectric constant $ε$ and the relaxation time constant $τ$ too exhibit anomalous jump at $E_{th}(T)$. The $E_{th}(T)$, the extent of jump in resistivity ($Δρ$), and the hysteresis associated with the jump [$ΔE_{th}(T)$] are found to decrease systematically with the increase in temperature ($T$). Several temperature-driven phase transitions have also been noticed in low and high resistive states (LRS and HRS). The temperature-driven conduction turns out to be governed by activated hopping of small polarons at all the phases with electric ($E$) and magnetic ($H$) field dependent activation energy $U(E,H)$. Interestingly, as the temperature is raised, the $E$-driven conduction at a fixed temperature evolves from $\textit{Ohmic}$ to $\textit{non-Ohmic}$ across 10-200 K and within 110-200 K, $ρ$ follows three-dimensional variable range hopping (3D-VRH) with stretched exponential $\sim$ $exp[(E_0/E)^4]$ or power law $\sim$ $(E_0/E)^m$ ($m$ varies within $\sim$0.6-0.7 and $\sim$0.6-0.8 at LRS and HRS, respectively) dependence depending on the localization length ($ζ_E$) to diffusion length ($d_E$) ratio associated with $E$-driven conduction. The $ρ(E,T)$ follows universal scaling only at LRS within 10-110 K but not at higher temperature or at HRS. The entire set of observations has been discussed within the framework of structural evolution of the point-defect (cation vacancies or oxygen excess) network. This comprehensive map of esoteric $ρ-E-T-H$ and $ε-E-T-H$ patterns provides insights on defect driven effects in a composite useful for tuning both the resistive transition and multiferroicity.

Continuously Varying Critical Exponents Beyond Weak Universality

Renormalization group theory does not restrict the from of continuous variation of critical exponents which occurs in presence of a marginal operator. However, the continuous variation of critical exponents, observed in different contexts, usually follows a weak universality scenario where some of the exponents (e.g., $β, γ, ν$) vary keeping others (e.g., $δ, η$) fixed. Here we report a ferromagnetic phase transition in (Sm$_{1-y}$Nd$_{y}$)$_{0.52}$Sr$_{0.48}$MnO$_3$ $(0.5\le y\le1)$ single crystal where all critical exponents vary with $y.$ Such variation clearly violates both universality and weak universality hypothesis. We propose a new scaling theory that explains the present experimental results, reduces to the weak universality as a special case, and provides a generic route leading to continuous variation of critical exponents and multicriticality.

Determination of intrinsic ferroelectric polarization in lossy improper ferroelectric systems

We measured the intrinsic hysteretic polarization in lossy improper and nanoferroelectric systems where the nonhysteretic polarization and leakage are large and the relaxation takes place over a broader time scale. We used different measurement protocols such as standard single triangular voltage pulse, a pulse train of PUND (Positive Up Negative Down), and an even more complicated pulse train of fourteen voltage pulses and compared the results obtained. We show that a protocol which sends a train of fourteen pulses is more appropriate for extracting relaxed (i.e., time scale independent) and intrinsic remanent polarization for these samples. We also point out that it is possible to select and design an appropriate measurement protocol depending on the magnitude of polarization and leakage of the system.

Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of quasi-one-dimensional Ising spin chain CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$

We have investigated the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of antiferromagnetic Ising spin chain CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Both monoclinic $α$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ and triclinic $γ$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ exhibit field-induced metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state via an intermediate ferrimagnetic state with 1/3 magnetization plateau. Due to this field-induced metamagnetic transition, these systems show large conventional as well as inverse magnetocaloric effects. In $α$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$, we observe field-induced complex magnetic phases and multiple magnetization plateaux at low temperature when the field is applied along $c$ axis. Several critical temperatures and fields have been identified from the temperature and field dependence of magnetization, magnetic entropy change and heat capacity to construct the $H$-$T$ phase diagram. As compared to $α$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$, $γ$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ displays a relatively simple magnetic phase diagram. Due to the large magnetic entropy change and adiabatic temperature change at low or moderate applied magnetic field, $γ$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ may be considered as a magnetic refrigerant in the low-temperature region.

Magnetodielectric and spin-lattice coupling in quasi 1D Ising spin chain CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$

We have studied magnetodielectric and spin-lattice coupling in CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ single crystals. Magnetostriction and magnetodielectric experiments are performed at temperatures in and above antifferomagnetic phase of quasi 1D Ising spin chain CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$. Field induced magnetic transitions are clearly reflected in magnetodielectric measurement as well as magnetostriction measurement also. Two sharp anomalies are found around the critical fields of antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition and ferrimagnetic to saturated paramagnetic transition in both magnetodielectric and magnetostriction experiments. High field anomaly is more pronounced for magnetodielectric response and magnetostriction also. So, in CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$, spins are strongly coupled with lattice as well as charges also.

Tuning the scattering mechanism in three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$

To probe the charge scattering mechanism in Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ single crystal, we have analyzed the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the Seebeck coefficient ($S$). The large saturation value of $S$ at high field clearly demonstrates the linear energy dispersion of three-dimensional Dirac fermion. A wide tunability of the charge scattering mechanism has been realized by varying the strength of the magnetic field and carrier density via In doping. With the increase in magnetic field, the scattering time crosses over from being nearly energy independent to a regime of linear dependence. On the other hand, the scattering time enters into the inverse energy-dependent regime and the Fermi surface strongly modifies with 2\% In doping at Cd site. With further increase in In content from 2 to 4\%, we did not observe any Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation up to 9 T field, but the magnetoresistance is found to be quite large as in the case of undoped sample.

Field induced metamagnetic transitions in quasi-one-dimensional Ising spin chain CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$

We have investigated the temperature and magnetic field dependence of magnetization ($M$), specific heat ($C_p$), and relative sample length change ($ΔL/L_0$) for understanding the field-induced metamagnetic transitions in quasi-one-dimensional monoclinic ($α$ phase) and triclinic ($γ$ phase) CoV$_2$O$_6$ spin chains. With the application of external magnetic field, a sharp peak emerges in $C_p$($T$) below $T_N$$=$15 K in $α$ phase and a hump-like feature appears above $T_N$$=$6.5 K in $γ$ phase due to the field-induced ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic transitions, respectively. Strong field dependence of linear thermal expansion and large positive magnetostriction have been observed in $α$ phase. Though magnetization data indicate strong spin-orbit coupling for both phases, other measurements show that this effect is very weak for the $γ$ phase.

Giant magnetothermal conductivity and magnetostriction effect in charge ordered Nd$_{0.8}$Na$_{0.2}$MnO$_{3}$ compound

We present results on resistivity ($ρ$), magnetization ($M$), thermal conductivity ($κ$), magnetostriction ($\frac{ΔL}{L(0)}$) and specific heat ($C_{p}$) of charge-orbital ordered antiferromagnetic Nd$_{0.8}$Na$_{0.2}$MnO$_{3}$ compound. Magnetic field-induced antiferromagnetic/charge-orbital ordered insulating to ferromagnetic metallic transition leads to giant magnetothermal conductivity and magnetostriction effect. The low-temperature irreversibility behavior in $ρ$, $M$, $κ$ and $\frac{ΔL}{L(0)}$ due to field cycling together with striking similarity among the field and temperature dependence of these parameters manifest the presence of strong and complex spin-charge-lattice coupling in this compound. The giant magnetothermal conductivity is attributed mainly to the suppression of phonon scattering due to the destabilization of spin fluctuations and static/dynamic Jahn-Teller distortion by the application of magnetic field.

Large adiabatic temperature and magnetic entropy changes in EuTiO3

We have investigated the magnetocaloric effect in single and polycrystalline samples of quantum paraelectric EuTiO3 by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Single crystalline EuTiO3 shows antiferromagnetic ordering due to Eu2+ magnetic moments below TN = 5.6 K. This compound shows a giant magnetocaloric effect around its Neel temperature. The isothermal magnetic entropy change is 49 Jkg-1K-1, the adiabatic temperature change is 21 K and the refrigeration capacity is 500 JKg-1 for a field change of 7 T at TN. The single crystal and polycrystalline samples show similar values of the magnetic entropy change and adiabatic temperature changes. The large magnetocaloric effect is due to suppression of the spin entropy associated with localized 4f moment of Eu2+ ions. The giant magnetocaloric effect together with negligible hysteresis, suggest that EuTiO3 could be a potential material for magnetic refrigeration below 20 K.

Magnetic field induced drastic violation of Wiedemann-Franz law in Dirac semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$

The journey through the nontrivial band topology beyond the conventional band structure has resulted in the recent discovery of three-dimensional Dirac semimetal phase in Na$_{3}$Bi and Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$. The bulk state of which is semi-metallic obeying linear energy dispersion, while the surface state is topology protected Fermi arc. Due to the unique band topology, they show different exotic electronic properties of both fundamental and technological interest. From electrical and thermal transport measurements, we have demonstrated a remarkable violation of Wiedemann-Franz law (WFL) under application of magmatic field in Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ and the violation becomes more and more drastic with increasing magnetic field strength. Whereas the validity of WFL is the key feature of Landau Fermi-liquid theory in metal, the notion of quasiparticles is the building block to this theory. This implies that the fundamental concept of Landau quasiparticle no longer holds in Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ in presence of magnetic field. The continuous break down of Landau quasiparticle framework with field introduces a concept of field induced quantum critical point (QCP) as in the case of heavy fermion compounds YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, Sr$_{3}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$, etc.

Perpendicular standing spin wave and magnetic anisotropic study on amorphous FeTaC films

Magnetic anisotropy, spin wave (SW) excitation and exchange stiffness constant of amorphous FeTaC ($d$ = 20-200 nm) films were studied as a function of thickness using micro-strip ferromagnetic resonance (MS-FMR) technique. The MS-FMR spectra for in-plane applied magnetic field show the presence of uniform precessional mode ($n$ = 0) along with first perpendicular standing spin wave (PSSW) mode ($n$ = 1) especially for $d$ = 50, 100 and 200 nm films. The angular ($φ_{H}$) dependence of resonance field ($H_{r}$) and magnetic field dependence of resonance frequencies ($f_{r}$) in planar configuration for the uniform and PSSW modes were modeled successfully by using dispersion relation which arises from a combination of exchange and dipolar interactions. The relevant parameters such as saturation magnetization ($4πM_{S}$), uniaxial anisotropic constant ($K_{u}$), $g$-factor, and exchange stiffness constants ($A_{ex}$) are estimated for different FeTaC film thickness. $A_{ex}$ is found to increase from 1.52(4)$\times$10$^{-7}$ to 5.0(5)$\times$10$^{-6}$ erg/cm as the thickness of film increases from 50 to 200 nm, possibly due to surface pinning effect or significant inhomogeneity especially at higher thickness films.

Probing the Fermi Surface of 3D Dirac Semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ through de Haas-van Alphen Technique

We have observed Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen effect in the single crystals of three dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ upto 50 K, traceable at field as low as 2 T and 1 T, respectively. The values of Fermi wave vector, Fermi velocity, and effective cyclotron mass of charge carrier, calculated from both the techniques, are close to each other and match well with the earlier reports. However, the de Haas-van Alphen effect clearly reflects the existence of two different Fermi surface cross-sections along certain direction and a non-trivial Berry's phase which is the signature of 3D Dirac Fermion in Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$.

Spin dynamics and frequency dependence of magnetic damping study in soft ferromagnetic FeTaC film with a stripe domain structure

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and low magnetic damping are the key factors for the free layer magnetization switching by spin transfer torque technique in magnetic tunnel junction devices. The magnetization precessional dynamics in soft ferromagnetic FeTaC thin film with a stripe domain structure was explored in broad band frequency range by employing micro-strip ferromagnetic resonance technique. The polar angular variation of resonance field and linewidth at different frequencies have been analyzed numerically using Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation by taking into account the total free energy density of the film. The numerically estimated parameters Landé $g$-factor, PMA constant, and effective magnetization are found to be 2.1, 2$\times10^{5}$ erg/cm$^{3}$ and 7145 Oe, respectively. The frequency dependence of Gilbert damping parameter ($α$) is evaluated by considering both intrinsic and extrinsic effects into the total linewidth analysis. The value of $α$ is found to be 0.006 at 10 GHz and it increases with decreasing precessional frequency.

Weak ferromagnetism and magnetization reversal in YFe$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$O$_3$

We present combined experimental and theoretical studies on the magnetic properties of a solid solution between yttrium orthoferrite and yttrium orthochromite systems, YFe$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$O$_3$ (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1) where Fe$^{3+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$ ions are distributed randomly at the same crystallographic site (4b). We found that all the compositions exhibit weak ferromagnetism below the Néel temperature that decreases non-linearly with increasing $x$, while certain intermediate compositions ($x = 0.4,0.5$) show a compensation point and magnetization reversal. This unusual behavior is explained based on a simple model comprising the isotropic superexchange and the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. This model explains the magnetization behavior in the entire range of doping and temperature including the magnetization reversal which results from an interplay of various DM interactions such as, Fe-O-Fe, Cr-O-Cr and Fe-O-Cr.

Field-induced spin-structural transition and giant magnetostriction in Ising chain $α$-CoV$_2$O$_6$

We have investigated the temperature and magnetic field dependence of magnetization, specific heat ($C_p$), and relative sample length change ($ΔL/L_0$) for understanding the field-induced spin-structural change in quasi-one-dimensional spin chain $α$-CoV$_2$O$_6$ which undergoes antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition below $T_N$$=$15 K. Analysis of $C_p$($T$) shows that an effective $S$$=$1/2 Ising state is realized below 20 K, though the magnetic fluctuations persist well above $T_N$. $C_p$ and the coefficient of linear thermal expansion ($α$) exhibit strong $H$ dependence in the AFM state. We also observe a huge positive magnetostriction [$ΔL$($H$)/$L_0$] below 20 K which does not show any tendency of saturation up to 9 T. With increasing field, a sharp and symmetric peak emerges below $T_N$ in both $C_p$($T$) and $α$($T$) due to field-induced first order ferrimagnetic/ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transitions. The large value of magnetostriction below $T_N$ suggests strong spin-lattice coupling in $α$-CoV$_2$O$_6$.

Memory effects and magnetic relaxation in single-crystalline La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$CoO$_3$

We report a detailed investigation of magnetic relaxation and memory effects in La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$CoO$_3$ single crystal from dc magnetization measurements. The analysis of magnetic relaxation at different temperatures and magnetic fields below the freezing temperature ($T_{f}$) manifests the characteristics of spin glass phase. Below $T_{f}$, striking memory effects have been clearly observed in different experimental protocols. The memory effect in the zero-field-cooled magnetization further establishes that the glassy magnetic state arises from the co-operative spin-spin interaction but not due to the independent relaxation of metastable phase clusters. The asymmetric response with respect to negative and positive temperature change favors the hierarchical model of memory effects rather than the droplet model discussed in other works for different insulating and metallic Heisenberg spin glasses.

3d-4f spin interaction induced giant magnetocaloric effect in zircon-type DyCrO4 and HoCrO4 compounds

We have investigated the influence of 3d-4f spin interaction on magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of DyCrO$_4$ and HoCrO$_4$ compounds by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Both the compounds exhibit complicated magnetic properties and huge magnetic entropy change around the ferromagnetic transition due to the strong competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions. For a field change of 8 T, the maximum values of magnetic entropy change ($ΔS_{M}^{max}$), adiabatic temperature change ($ΔT_{ad}$), and refrigerant capacity (RC) reach 29 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$, 8 K, and 583 J kg$^{-1}$, respectively for DyCrO$_4$ whereas the corresponding values for HoCrO$_4$ are 31 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$, 12 K, and 622 J kg$^{-1}$. $ΔS_{M}^{max}$, $ΔT_{ad}$, and RC are also quite large for a moderate field change. The large values of magnetocaloric parameters suggest that the zircon-type DyCrO$_4$ and HoCrO$_4$ could be the potential magnetic refrigerant materials for liquefaction of hydrogen.

Critical exponents and irreversibility lines of La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$CoO$_3$ single crystal

We have studied the dynamic and static critical behavior of spin glass transition in insulating La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$CoO$_3$ single crystal by ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements in the vicinity of its freezing temperature ($T_f$). The dynamic scaling analysis of the frequency dependence of ac susceptibility data yields the characteristic time constant $τ_{0}$=1.6(9)$\times10^{-12}$ s, the dynamic critical exponent $zν$=9.5(2), and a frequency dependence factor $K$=$Δ$$T_{f}/T_{f}$($Δ$$log$$f$)=0.017, indicating that the sample enters into a canonical spin-glass phase below $T_{f}$=34.8(2) K. The scaling analysis of non-linear magnetization in the vicinity of $T_{f}$ through the static scaling hypothesis yields critical exponents $β$=0.89(1) and $γ$=2.9(1), which match well with that observed for well known three-dimensional (3D) Heisenberg spin glasses. From the longitudinal component of zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetization measurement we have constructed the $H-T$ phase diagram which represents the field evolution of two characteristic temperatures: the upper one, $T_{w}(H)$, indicates the onset of spin freezing in a uniform external field $H$, while the lower one, $T_{s}(H)$, marks the onset of strong irreversibility of the frozen state. The low field $T_{s}(H)$ follows the critical line suggested by d'Almeida-Thouless model for canonical spin glass, whereas the $T_{w}(H)$ exhibits a reentrant behavior with a maximum in the $T_{w}(H)$ at a nonzero field above which it follows the Gabay-Toulouse (GT) critical line which is a characteristic of Heisenberg spin glass. The re-entrant behavior of the GT line resembles that predicted theoretically for $n$-component vector spin glasses in the presence of a uniaxial anisotropy field.

Dynamics of ion cloud in a linear Paul trap

A linear ion trap setup has been developed for studying the dynamics of trapped ion cloud and thereby realizing possible systematics of a high precision measurement on a single ion within it. The dynamics of molecular nitrogen ion cloud has been investigated to extract the characteristics of the trap setup. The stability of trap operation has been studied with observation of narrow nonlinear resonances pointing out the region of instabilities within the broad stability region. The secular frequency has been measured and the motional spectra of trapped ion oscillation have been obtained by using electric dipole excitation. It is applied to study the space charge effect and the axial coupling in the radial plane.

Large magnetocapacitance in electronic ferroelectric manganite systems

We have observed a sizable positive magnetocapacitance ($\sim$$5-90\%$) in perovskite Pr$_{0.55}$Ca$_{0.45}$MnO$_3$ and bilayer Pr(Sr$_{0.1}$Ca$_{0.9}$)$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$ system under 5T magnetic field across 20-100 K below the magnetic transition point T$_N$. The magnetodielectric effect, on the other hand, exhibits a crossover: (a) from positive to negative for the perovskite system and (b) from negative to positive for the bilayer system over the same temperature range. The bilayer Pr(Sr$_{0.1}$Ca$_{0.9}$)$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$ system exhibits a sizable anisotropy as well. We have also noticed the influence of magnetic field on the dielectric relaxation characteristics of these systems. These systems belong to a class of improper ferroelectrics and are expected to exhibit charge/orbital order driven ferroelectric polarization below the transition point T$_{CO}$. Large magnetocapacitance in these systems shows typical multiferroic behavior even though the ferroelectric polarization is small in comparison to that of other ferroelectrics.

Scaling of NonOhmic Conduction in Strongly Correlated Systems

A new scaling formalism is used to analyze nonlinear I-V data in the vicinity of metal-insulator transitions (MIT) in five manganite systems. An exponent, called the nonlinearity exponent, and an onset field for nonlinearity, both characteristic of the system under study, are obtained from the analysis. The onset field is found to have an anomalously low value corroborating the theoretically predicted electronically soft phases. The scaling functions above and below the MIT of a polycrystalline sample are found to be the same but with different exponents which are attributed to the distribution of the MIT temperatures. The applicability of the scaling in manganites underlines the universal response of the disordered systems to electric field.

Space charge and collective oscillation of ion cloud in a linear Paul trap

The presence of charged particles in an ion trap modifies the harmonic trapping potential in which they are trapped, leading to observed shifts in secular frequency as well as appearance of collective oscillation. In a linear trap geometry, both of these effects have been observed under different trapping conditions using narrow non-linear resonance and external excitation. The observations have been modeled with minimal fitting parameter showing good agreement with results obtained. The space charge in our experiment plays an important role in terms of criticality of the onset of collective oscillation.

Temperature-dependent structural property and power factor of n type thermoelectric Bi0.90Sb0.10 and Bi0.86Sb0.14 alloys

Thermal variation of structural property, linear thermal expansion coefficient, resistivity, thermopower and power factor of polycrystalline Bi1-xSbx (x=0.10, 0.14) samples are reported. Temperature-dependent powder diffraction experiments indicate that samples do not undergo any structural phase transition. Rietveld refinement technique has been used to perform detailed structural analysis. Temperature dependence of thermal expansion coefficient is found to be stronger for Bi0.90Sb0.10. Also, power factor for direct band gap Bi0.90Sb0.10 is higher as compared to that for indirect band gap Bi0.86Sb0.14. Role of electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering on resistivity, thermopower and power factor have been discussed.

Vortex dynamics and second magnetization peak in PrFeAsO$_{0.60}$F$_{0.12}$ superconductor

We have studied the vortex dynamics in the PrFeAsO$_{0.60}$F$_{0.12}$ superconducting sample by dc magnetization and dynamic magnetization-relaxation rate $(Q)$ measurements. The field dependence of the superconducting irreversible magnetization $M_s$ reveals a second magnetization peak or fishtail effect. The large value of $Q$ is an indication of moderate vortex motion and relatively weak pinning energy. Data analysis based on the generalized inversion scheme suggests that the vortex dynamics can be described by the collective pinning model. The temperature dependence of the critical current is consistent with the pinning due to the spatial variation in the mean free path near a lattice defect ($δl$ pinning). The temperature and field dependence of $Q$ indicates a crossover from elastic to plastic vortex creep with increasing temperature and magnetic field. Finally, we have constructed the vortex phase diagram based on the present data.

Anomalous thermal expansion of Sb$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulator

We have investigated the temperature dependence of the linear thermal expansion along the hexagonal c axis ($ΔL$), in-plane resistivity ($ρ$), and specific heat ($C_p$) of the topological insulator Sb$_2$Te$_3$ single crystal. $ΔL$ exhibits a clear anomaly in the temperature region 204-236 K. The coefficient of linear thermal expansion $α$ decreases rapidly above 204 K, passes through a deep minimum at around 225 K and then increases abruptly in the region 225-236 K. $α$ is negative in the interval 221-228 K. The temperature dependence of both $α$ and $C_p$ can be described well by the Debye model from 2 to 290 K, excluding the region around the anomaly in $α$.

Giant magnetocaloric effect in magnetically frustrated EuHo$_2$O$_4$ and EuDy$_2$O$_4$ compounds

We have investigated the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of EuHo$_2$O$_4$ and EuDy$_2$O$_4$ by magnetization and heat capacity measurements down to 2 K. These compounds undergo a field-induced antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition and exhibit a huge entropy change. For a field change of 0-8 T, the maximum magnetic entropy and adiabatic temperature changes are 30 (25) J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ and 12.7 (16) K, respectively and the corresponding value of refrigerant capacity is 540 (415) J kg$^{-1}$ for EuHo$_2$O$_4$ (EuDy$_2$O$_4$). These magnetocaloric parameters also remain large down to lowest temperature measured and are even larger than that for some of the potential magnetic refrigerants reported in the same temperature range for a moderate field change. Moreover, these materials are highly insulating and exhibit no thermal and field hysteresis, fulfilling the necessary conditions for a good magnetic refrigerant in the low-temperature region.

Near dispersion-less surface plasmon polariton resonances at a metal-dielectric interface

Omni-directional light coupling to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes to make use of plasmon mediated near-field enhancement is challenging. We report possibility of near dispersion-less modes in structures with unpatterned metal-dielectric interfaces having 2-D dielectric patterns on top. We show that the position and dispersion of the excited modes can be controlled by the excitation geometry and the 2-D pattern. The anti-crossings resulting from the in-plane coupling of different SPP modes are also shown.

Near room-temperature colossal magnetodielectricity and multiglass properties in partially-disordered La2NiMnO6

We report magnetic, dielectric and magnetodielectric responses of pure monoclinic bulk phase of partially-disordered La2NiMnO6, exhibiting a spectrum of unusual properties and establish that this system intrinsically is a true multiglass with a large magnetodielectric coupling (8-20%) over a wide range of temperatures (150 - 300 K). Specifically, our results establish a unique way to obtain colossal magnetodielectricity, independent of any striction effects, by engineering the asymmetric hopping contribution to the dielectric constant via the tuning of the relative spin orientations between neighboring magnetic ions in a transition metal oxide system. We discuss the role of anti-site (Ni-Mn) disorder in emergence of these unusual properties.

Anisotropic magnetic properties and giant magnetocaloric effect in antiferromagnetic $R$MnO$_3$ crystals ($R$=Dy, Tb, Ho and Yb)

We have systematically investigated the magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in $R$MnO$_3$ ($R$$=$Dy, Tb, Ho and Yb) single crystals. Above a critical value of applied field ($H_c$), $R$MnO$_3$ undergo a first-order antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition below the ordering temperature ($T_{N}^{R}$) of $R^{3+}$ moment and a second-order FM to paramagnetic (PM) transition above $T_{N}^{R}$. Both $H$ and $T$ dependence of $M$ shows that the system is highly anisotropic in the FM as well as PM states and, as a result, the magnetic entropy change ($ΔS_{M}$) is extremely sensitive to the direction of applied field and can be negative (normal MCE) or positive (inverse MCE). For hexagonal HoMnO$_3$ and YbMnO$_3$ systems, a very small inverse MCE is observed only for $H$ parallel to c axis and it decreases with increasing $H$ and crosses over to normal one above $H_c$. On the other hand, for orthorhombic DyMnO$_3$ and TbMnO$_3$, though the inverse MCE disappears above $H_c$ along easy-axis of magnetization, it increases rapidly with $H$ along hard-axis of magnetization for $T$$\ll$$T_{N}^{R}$. Except for YbMnO$_3$, the values of $ΔS_{M}$, relative cooling power and adiabatic temperature change along easy-axis of magnetization are quite large in the field-induced FM state for a moderate field strength. The large values of these parameters, together with negligible hysteresis, suggest that the multiferroic manganites could be potential materials for magnetic refrigeration in the low-temperature region.

Current-driven orbital order-disorder transition in LaMnO3

We report significant influence of electric current on the orbital order-disorder transition in LaMnO3. The transition temperature T_OO, thermal hysteresis in the resistivity (rho) versus temperature (T) plot around T_OO, and latent heat L associated with the transition decrease with the increase in current density. Eventually, at a critical current density, L reaches zero. The transition zone, on the other hand, broadens with the increase in current density. The states at ordered, disordered, and transition zone are all found to be stable within the time window from ~10^-3 to ~10^4 seconds.

Fe-spin reorientation in PrFeAsO : Evidences from resistivity and specific heat studies

We report the magnetic field dependence of resistivity ($ρ$) and specific heat ($C$) for the non-superconducting PrFeAsO compound. Our study shows a hitherto unobserved anomaly at $T_{SR}$ in the resistivity and specific heat data which arises as a result of the interplay of antiferromagnetic (AFM) Pr and Fe sublattices. Below the AFM transition temperature ($T_N^{\rm{Pr}}$), Pr moment orders along the crystallographic c axis and its effect on the iron subsystem causes a reorientation of the ordered inplane Fe moments in a direction out of the $ab$ plane. Application of magnetic field introduces disorder in the AFM Pr sublattice, which, in turn, reduces the out-of-plane Pr-Fe exchange interaction responsible for Fe spin reorientation. Both in $ρ$($T$) and $d(C/T)/dT$ curves, the peak at $T_{SR}$ broadens with the increase of $H$ due to the introduction of the disorder in the AFM Pr sublattice by magnetic field. In $ρ$($T$) curve, the peak shifts towards lower temperature with $H$ and disappears above 6 T while in $d(C/T)/dT$ curve the peak remains visible up to 14 T. The broadening of the anomaly at $T_N^{\rm{Pr}}$ in $C(T)$ with increasing $H$ further confirms that magnetic field induces disorder in the AFM Pr sublattice.

Griffiths phase in solid-solution of ferromagnetic manganite and cobaltite

We report the existence of Griffiths phase (GP) over a wide range of $x$ in La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O$_3$, the solid solution of ferromagnetic (FM) La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$CoO$_3$, from magnetization measurements. In this compound, GP arises due to the quenching of randomly distributed Co-O-Mn antiferromagnetic bonds in the FM background. In contrary to divalent doped manganites, GP in the present system can exist entirely in the metallic state above $T_C$ (for $x$$<$0.10). Based on the present study, a magnetoelectronic phase diagram is drawn.

Quantm Magnetoresistance of the PrFeAsO oxypnictides

We report the observation of an unusual $B$ dependence of transverse magnetoresistance (MR) in the PrFeAsO, one of the parent compound of pnictide superconductors. Below the spin density wave transition, MR is large, positive and increases with decreasing temperature. At low temperatures, MR increases linearly with $B$ up to 14 T. For $T$$\geq$40 K, MR vs $B$ curve develops a weak curvature in the low-field region which indicates a crossover from $B$ linear to $B^2$ dependence as $B$$\rightarrow$0. The $B$ linear MR originates from the Dirac cone states and has been explained by the quantum mechanical model proposed by Abrikosov.

The magnetization of PrFeAsO$_{0.60}$F$_{0.12} sueprconductor

The magnetization of the PrFeAsO$_{0.60}$F$_{0.12}$ polycrystalline sample has been measured as functions of temperature and magnetic field $(H)$. The observed total magnetization is the sum of a superconducting irreversible magnetization ($M_s$) and a paramagnetic magnetization ($M_p$). Analysis of dc susceptibility $χ(T)$ in the normal state shows that the paramagnetic component of magnetization comes from the Pr$^{+3}$ magnetic moments. The intragrain critical current density $(J_L)$ derived from the magnetization measurement is large. The $J_L(H)$ curve displays a second peak which shifts towards the high-field region with decreasing temperature. In the low-field region, a plateau up to a field $H^*$ followed by a power law $H^{-5/8}$ behavior of $J_L(H)$ is the characteristic of the strong pinning. A vortex phase diagram for the present superconductor has been obtained from the magnetization and resistivity data.

Tuning of dielectric properties and magnetism of SrTiO3 by site-specific doping of Mn

Combining experiments with first principles calculations, we show that site-specific doping of Mn into SrTiO3 has a decisive influence on the dielectric properties of these doped systems. We find that phonon contributions to the dielectric constant invariably decrease sharply on doping at any site. However, a sizable, random dipolar contribution only for Mn at the Sr site arises from a strong off-centric displacement of Mn in spite of Mn being in a non-d0 state; this leads to a large dielectric constant at higher temperatures and gives rise to a relaxor ferroelectric behavior at lower temperatures. We also investigate magnetic properties in detail and critically reevaluate the possibility of a true multi-glass state in such systems.

An einzel lens with a diagonal-slit central electrode to combine steering and focusing of a low energy ion beam

In many applications of the simple three-element einzel lens, such as injecting a low energy ion beam into a high-field Penning trap, there is a need for small-angle steering as well as focusing of the beam. We have analyzed a diagonalslit cylinder serving as the middle electrode of such a lens and have shown that such an electrode configuration significantly diminishes the aberration associated with such a deflection.

Parity Nonconservation in Odd-isotopes of Single Trapped Atomic Ions

We have estimated the size of the light-shifts due to parity nonconservation (PNC) interactions in different isotopes of Ba+ and Ra+ ions based on the work of Fortson [Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 2383 (1993)]. We have used the nuclear spin independent (NSI) amplitudes calculated earlier by us [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 163003 (2006); Phys. Rev. A 78, 050501(R) (2008)] and we have employed the third order many-body perturbation theory (MBPT(3)) in this work to estimate the nuclear spin dependent (NSD) amplitudes in these ions. Ra+ is found to be more favourable than Ba+ for measuring both the NSI and NSD PNC observables.

Quantum metrology to probe atomic parity nonconservation

An entangled state prepared in a decoherence free sub-space together with a Ramsey type measurement can probe parity violation in heavy alkali ions like Ba+ or Ra+. Here we propose an experiment with Ba+ as an example to measure the small parity violating effect in this system. It has been shown that a measurement on a maximally correlated system will reduce the uncertainty as compared to that on a single ion measurement. In addition it also provides a feasible solution to measure the nuclear spin dependent part of the total parity violating light shift in an ionic system which has so far not been addressed.

Investigation of biferroic properties in La0.6Sr0.4MnO3/0.7 Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 0.3 PbTiO3 epitaxial bilayered heterostructures

Epitaxial bilayered thin films consisting of La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (LSMO) and 0.7 Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 0.3 PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) layers of relatively different thicknesses were fabricated on LaNiO3 coated LaAlO3 (100) single crystal substrates by pulsed laser ablation technique. Ferroelectric and ferromagnetic characteristics of these heterostructures confirmed their biferroic nature. The magnetization and ferroelectric polarization of the bilayered heterostructures were enhanced with increasing PMN-PT layer thickness owing to the effect of lattice strain. Dielectric properties of these heterostructures studied over a wide range of temperature under different magnetic field strength suggested a possible role of elastic strain mediated magnetoelectric coupling behind the observed magneto-dielectric effect in addition to the influence of rearrangement of the interfacial charge carriers under an applied magnetic field.

Radium ion: A possible candidate for measuring atomic parity violation

Single trapped and laser cooled Radium ion as a possible candidate for measuring the parity violation induced frequency shift has been discussed here. Even though the technique to be used is similar to that proposed by Fortson [1], Radium has its own advantages and disadvantages. The most attractive part of Radium ion as compared to that of Barium ion is its mass which comes along with added complexity of instability as well as other issues which are discussed here

Impurity Substitution in Bismuth and Thallium Cuprates: Suppression of T_c and Estimation of Pseudogap

Suppression of T_c in bilayer bismuth and thallium cuprates, by substitution of Co impurities at Cu sites, are taken for examination. T_c suppression data on differently doped Bi2212 and Tl2212 are analysed within the unitary pair-breaking formalism due to Abrikosov and Gorkov, by fitting data points to a phenomenological relation valid for weak coupling d-wave superconductors. Values of the pseudogap magnitude at each doping are thereby estimated within a "fermi-level density of states suppression" picture. Pseudogap magnitude from our estimation is observed to have a correspondence with a related characteristic temperature T^\star obtained by thermoelectric power measurements. Effects of pseudogap, on the density of states, is studied by calculating the susceptibility which shows a broad peak at high temperature. This peak feature in susceptibility is indicative of an unusual metallic state which could further be explored by systematic other measurements.
