A hadronic emission model for black hole-disc impacts in the blazar OJ 287

A super-massive black hole (SMBH) binary in the core of the blazar OJ 287 has been invoked in previous works to explain its observed optical flare quasi-periodicity. Following this picture, we investigate a hadronic origin for the X-ray and $γ$-ray counterparts of the November 2015 major optical flare of this source. An impact outflow must result after the lighter SMBH (the secondary) crosses the accretion disc of the heavier one (the primary). We then consider acceleration of cosmic-ray (CR) protons in the shock driven by the impact outflow as it expands and collides with the active galactic nucleus (AGN) wind of the primary SMBH. We show that the emission of these CRs can reproduce the X-ray and $γ$-ray flare data self-consistently with the optical component of the November 2015 major flare. The derived emission models are consistent with a magnetic field $B \sim 5$ G in the emission region and a power-law index of $q\sim2.2$ for the energy distribution of the emitting CRs. The mechanical luminosity of the AGN wind represents $\lesssim 50\%$ of the mass accretion power of the primary SMBH in all the derived emission profiles.

Probing spin correlations using angle resolved photoemission in a coupled metallic/Mott insulator system

A nearly free electron metal and a Mott insulating state can be thought of as opposite ends of possibilities for the motion of electrons in a solid. In the magnetic oxide metal PdCrO$_{2}$, these two coexist as alternating layers. Using angle resolved photoemission, we surprisingly find sharp band-like features in the one-electron removal spectral function of the correlated subsystem. We show that these arise because a hole created in the Mott layer moves to and propagates in the metallic layer while retaining memory of the Mott layer's magnetism. This picture is quantitatively supported by a strong coupling analysis capturing the physics of PdCrO$_{2}$ in terms of a Kondo lattice Hamiltonian. Our findings open new routes to use the non-magnetic probe of photoemission to gain insights into the spin-susceptibility of correlated electron systems.

Multiband optical variability of the blazar OJ 287 during its outbursts in 2015 -- 2016

We present recent optical photometric observations of the blazar OJ 287 taken during September 2015 -- May 2016. Our intense observations of the blazar started in November 2015 and continued until May 2016 and included detection of the large optical outburst in December 2016 that was predicted using the binary black hole model for OJ 287. For our observing campaign, we used a total of 9 ground based optical telescopes of which one is in Japan, one is in India, three are in Bulgaria, one is in Serbia, one is in Georgia, and two are in the USA. These observations were carried out in 102 nights with a total of ~ 1000 image frames in BVRI bands, though the majority were in the R band. We detected a second comparably strong flare in March 2016. In addition, we investigated multi-band flux variations, colour variations, and spectral changes in the blazar on diverse timescales as they are useful in understanding the emission mechanisms. We briefly discuss the possible physical mechanisms most likely responsible for the observed flux, colour and spectral variability.
