From helical to standard magnetorotational instability: predictions for upcoming liquid sodium experiments

We conduct a linear analysis of axisymmetric magnetorotational instability (MRI) in a magnetized cylindrical Taylor-Couette (TC) flow for its standard version (SMRI) with a purely axial background magnetic field and two further types -- helically modified SMRI (H-SMRI) and helical MRI (HMRI) -- in the presence of combined axial and azimuthal magnetic fields. This study is intended as preparatory for upcoming large-scale liquid sodium MRI experiments planned within the DRESDYN project at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, so we explore these instability types for typical values of the main parameters: the magnetic Reynolds number, the Lundquist number and the ratio of the angular velocities of the cylinders, which are attainable in these experiments. In contrast to previous attempts at detecting MRI in the lab, our results demonstrate that SMRI and its helically modified version can in principle be detected in the DRESDYN-TC device for the range of the above parameters, including the astrophysically most important Keplerian rotation, despite the extremely small magnetic Prandtl number of liquid sodium. Since in the experiments we plan to approach (H-)SMRI from the previously studied HMRI regime, we characterise the continuous and monotonous transition between the both regimes. We show that H-SMRI, like HMRI, represents an overstability (travelling wave) with non-zero frequency linearly increasing with azimuthal field. Because of its relevance to finite size flow systems in experiments, we also analyse the absolute form of H-SMRI and compare its growth rate and onset criterion with the convective one.

Effect of Passive flow Control of Bifurcation Phenomenon in Sudden Expansion channel

In this article we describe, a numerical simulation has been performed for a channel flow with sudden expansion. Different geometric expansion ratios are considered in the current study such as 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4. The bifurcation phenomenon has been investigated for the baseline case and the critical Reynolds number is controlled using a passive modification in the channel. The geometry of sudden expansion channel is modified by introducing a two-dimensional plate along the center line of the channel at the expansion plane. This is one of the passive control techniques, which has been explored in the present study. The computations indicate that the critical Reynolds number of the symmetry-breaking bifurcation increases as the length of the plate increases. An empirical relation has been developed amongst the critical Reynolds number, length of control plates and expansion ratio (h/H). The critical Reynolds number predicted by the empirical relation for different plate lengths are in good agreement with computational results.

Imaging the interface of a qubit and its quantum-many-body environment

Decoherence affects all quantum systems, natural or artificial, and is the primary obstacle impeding quantum technologies. We show theoretically that for a Rydberg qubit in a Bose condensed environment, experiments can image the system-environment interface that is central for decoherence. High precision absorption images of the condensed environment will be able to capture transient signals that show the real time build up of a mesoscopic entangled state in the environment. This is possible before decoherence sources other than the condensate itself can kick in, since qubit decoherence time-scales can be tuned from the order of nanoseconds to microseconds by choice of the excited Rydberg principal quantum number ν. Imaging the interface will allow detailed explorations of open quantum system concepts and may offer guidance for coherence protection in challenging scenarios with non-Markovian environments.

Multiband optical variability of the blazar OJ 287 during its outbursts in 2015 -- 2016

We present recent optical photometric observations of the blazar OJ 287 taken during September 2015 -- May 2016. Our intense observations of the blazar started in November 2015 and continued until May 2016 and included detection of the large optical outburst in December 2016 that was predicted using the binary black hole model for OJ 287. For our observing campaign, we used a total of 9 ground based optical telescopes of which one is in Japan, one is in India, three are in Bulgaria, one is in Serbia, one is in Georgia, and two are in the USA. These observations were carried out in 102 nights with a total of ~ 1000 image frames in BVRI bands, though the majority were in the R band. We detected a second comparably strong flare in March 2016. In addition, we investigated multi-band flux variations, colour variations, and spectral changes in the blazar on diverse timescales as they are useful in understanding the emission mechanisms. We briefly discuss the possible physical mechanisms most likely responsible for the observed flux, colour and spectral variability.

Chimera states in a population of identical oscillators under planar cross-coupling

We report the existence of a chimera state in an assembly of identical nonlinear oscillators that are globally linked to each other in a simple planar cross-coupled form. The rotational symmetry breaking of the coupling term appears to be responsible for the emergence of these collective states that display a characteristic coexistence of coherent and incoherent behaviour. Our finding, seen in both a collection of van der Pol oscillators and chaotic Rossler oscillators, further simplifies the existence criterion for chimeras and thereby broadens the range of their applicability to real world situations.

Unidentified species in envelopes around carbon stars

The infrared (IR) spectra of many evolved carbon-rich stars exhibit two prominent dust emission features peaking around 21um and 30um, with the former exclusively seen in proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe), while the latter seen in a much wider range of objects, including AGB stars, PPNe and planetary nebulae (PNe). The 30um feature is seen in all the 21um sources, but no correlation is found between these two features. Over a dozen carrier candidates have been proposed for the 21um feature, but none of them has been widely accepted and the nature of the 21um feature remains a mystery. The carrier of the 30um feature also remains unidentied. MgS dust, once widely accepted as a valid carrier, was ruled out because of the sulfur budget problem. In this work we examine nano-sized FeO dust as a carrier for the 21um feature. We calculate the IR emission spectrum of FeO nanodust which undergoes single-photon heating in PPNe. It is found that the 21um feature emitted by FeO nanodust is too broad to explain the observed feature. For the 30um feature, we argue that graphite could be a viable carrier. Graphite, provided its d.c. conductivity sigma_dc exceeding 100/ohm/cm, exhibits a pronounced band at 30um.

Vacuum Structure in QCD with Quark and Gluon Condensates

We consider here the vacuum structure in QCD with both quark and gluon condensates and a variational ansatz for the ground state. The method is nonperturbative using only equal time algebra for the field operators. We then find that a constrained energy minimisation of the Hamiltonian leads to a QCD vacuum with both quark and gluon condensates for $α_s > α_c=0.62$. Pion decay constant and the charge radius of the pion seem to fix the QCD coupling constant $α_s$ as 1.28. The approach opens up possibilities of relating the mysterious vacuum structure with common place hadronic properties.

Effective Potentials in QCD and Chiral Symmetry Breaking

We consider chiral symmetry breaking through nontrivial vacuum structure with an explicit construct for the vacuum with quark antiquark condensates in QCD with Coulomb gauge for different phenomenological potentials. The dimensional parameter for the condensate function gets related to $<{\bar ψ}ψ>$ of Shifman, Vainshtein and Zakharov. We then relate the condensate function to the wave function of pion as a Goldstone mode. This simultaneously yields the pion also as a quark antiquark bound state as a localised zero mode of vacuum. We then calculate different pionic properties using the wave function as obtained from the vacuum structure. (to appear in Z. Phys. C)
