Dimension of elementary amenable groups

The paper has three parts. It is conjectured that for every elementary amenable group G and every non-zero commutative ring k, the homological dimension of G over k is equal to the Hirsch length of G whenever G has no k-torsion. In Part I this is proved for several classes, including the abelian-by-polycyclic groups. In Part II it is shown that elementary amenable groups of homological dimension one are filtered colimits of systems of groups of cohomological dimension one. Part III is devoted to the deeper study of cohomological dimension with particular emphasis on the nilpotent-by-polycyclic case.

Groups with many finitary cohomology functors

For a group G we consider the set of natural numbers n for which the nth cohomology functor of G commutes with filtered colimit systems of coefficient modules. We find that for the large class of hierarchically decomposable groups there is a dichotomy: this set of natural numbers is either finite or cofinite. Moreover any finite or cofinite set is shown to arise in suitable examples. A survey of recent literature on this topic, especially the work of Martin Hamilton, is included.

Groups possessing extensive hierarchical decompositions

Kropholler's class of groups is the smallest class of groups which contains all finite groups and is closed under the following operator: whenever $G$ admits a finite-dimensional contractible $G$-CW-complex in which all stabilizer groups are in the class, then $G$ is itself in the class. Kropholler's class admits a hierarchical structure, i.e., a natural filtration indexed by the ordinals. For example, stage 0 of the hierarchy is the class of all finite groups, and stage 1 contains all groups of finite virtual cohomological dimension. We show that for each countable ordinal $α$, there is a countable group that is in Kropholler's class which does not appear until the $α+1$st stage of the hierarchy. Previously this was known only for $α= 0$, 1 and 2. The groups that we construct contain torsion. We also review the construction of a torsion-free group that lies in the third stage of the hierarchy.
