Absolute profinite rigidity and hyperbolic geometry

We construct arithmetic Kleinian groups that are profinitely rigid in the absolute sense: each is distinguished from all other finitely generated, residually finite groups by its set of finite quotients. The Bianchi group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z}[ω])$ with $ω^2+ω+1=0$ is rigid in this sense. Other examples include the non-uniform lattice of minimal co-volume in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ and the fundamental group of the Weeks manifold (the closed hyperbolic $3$-manifold of minimal volume).

Actions of arithmetic groups on homology spheres and acyclic homology manifolds

We establish lower bounds on the dimensions in which arithmetic groups with torsion can act on acyclic manifolds and homology spheres. The bounds rely on the existence of elementary p-groups in the groups concerned. In some cases, including Sp(2n,Z), the bounds we obtain are sharp: if X is a generalized Z/3-homology sphere of dimension less than 2n-1 or a Z/3-acyclic Z/3-homology manifold of dimension less than 2n, and if n \geq 3, then any action of Sp(2n,Z) by homeomorphisms on X is trivial; if n = 2, then every action of Sp(2n,Z) on X factors through the abelianization of Sp(4,Z), which is Z/2.

Dimension of elementary amenable groups

The paper has three parts. It is conjectured that for every elementary amenable group G and every non-zero commutative ring k, the homological dimension of G over k is equal to the Hirsch length of G whenever G has no k-torsion. In Part I this is proved for several classes, including the abelian-by-polycyclic groups. In Part II it is shown that elementary amenable groups of homological dimension one are filtered colimits of systems of groups of cohomological dimension one. Part III is devoted to the deeper study of cohomological dimension with particular emphasis on the nilpotent-by-polycyclic case.

Extrinsic versus intrinsic diameter for Riemannian filling-discs and van Kampen diagrams

The diameter of a disc filling a loop in the universal covering of a Riemannian manifold may be measured extrinsically using the distance function on the ambient space or intrinsically using the induced length metric on the disc. Correspondingly, the diameter of a van Kampen diagram filling a word that represents the identity in a finitely presented group can either be measured intrinsically its 1-skeleton or extrinsically in the Cayley graph of the group. We construct the first examples of closed manifolds and finitely presented groups for which this choice -- intrinsic versus extrinsic -- gives rise to qualitatively different min-diameter filling functions.

Infinite groups with fixed point properties

We construct finitely generated groups with strong fixed point properties. Let $\mathcal{X}_{ac}$ be the class of Hausdorff spaces of finite covering dimension which are mod-$p$ acyclic for at least one prime $p$. We produce the first examples of infinite finitely generated groups $Q$ with the property that for any action of $Q$ on any $X\in \mathcal{X}_{ac}$, there is a global fixed point. Moreover, $Q$ may be chosen to be simple and to have Kazhdan's property (T). We construct a finitely presented infinite group $P$ that admits no non-trivial action by diffeomorphisms on any smooth manifold in $\mathcal{X}_{ac}$. In building $Q$, we exhibit new families of hyperbolic groups: for each $n\geq 1$ and each prime $p$, we construct a non-elementary hyperbolic group $G_{n,p}$ which has a generating set of size $n+2$, any proper subset of which generates a finite $p$-group.

Free and fragmenting filling length

The filling length of an edge-circuit ηin the Cayley 2-complex of a finite presentation of a group is the least integer L such that there is a combinatorial null-homotopy of ηdown to a base point through loops of length at most L. We introduce similar notions in which the null-homotopy is not required to fix a basepoint, and in which the contracting loop is allowed to bifurcate. We exhibit groups in which the resulting filling invariants exhibit dramatically different behaviour to the standard notion of filling length. We also define the corresponding filling invariants for Riemannian manifolds and translate our results to this setting.
