Pushing JWST to the extremes: search and scrutiny of bright galaxy candidates at z$\simeq$15-30

We designed customized Lyman-break color selection techniques to identify galaxy candidates in the redshift ranges $15 \leq z \leq 20$ and $20 \leq z \leq 28$. The selection was performed on the ASTRODEEP-JWST multi-band catalogs of the CEERS, Abell-2744, JADES, NGDEEP, and PRIMER survey fields, covering a total area of $\sim0.2$ sq. deg. We identify five candidates at $15 \leq z \leq 20$, while no objects are found based on the $z\gtrsim20$ color selection criteria. Despite exhibiting a $>$1.5 mag break, all the objects display multimodal redshift probability distributions across different SED-fitting codes and methodologies. The alternative solutions correspond to poorly understood populations of low-mass quiescent or dusty galaxies at z$\sim$3-7. This conclusion is supported by the analysis of five F200W-dropout objects that we find to be interlopers on the basis of NIRSpec PRISM spectra: four dusty star-forming galaxies at z$\sim$2.2-6.6, and a passive galaxy at z=4.91 with log$(M_{\rm star}/{\rm M}_{\odot}) \lesssim$ 9. We measured the UV luminosity function under different assumptions on the contamination level within our sample. We find that if even a fraction of the candidates is indeed at $z\gtrsim15$, the resulting UV LF points to a very mild evolution compared to estimates at $z<15$, implying a significant tension with existing theoretical models. In particular, confirming our bright ($M_{\text{UV}}<-21$) candidates would require substantial revisions to the theoretical framework. In turn, if all these candidates will be confirmed to be interlopers, we conclude that future surveys may need ten times wider areas to select $M_{\text{UV}}\lesssim-20$ galaxies at $z>15$. Observations in the F150W and F200W filters at depths comparable to those in the NIRCam LW bands are also required to mitigate contamination from rare red objects at z$\lesssim$8.

Discovery and properties of ultra-high redshift galaxies ($9<z<12$) in the JWST ERO SMACS 0723 Field

We present a reduction and analysis of the \textit{James Webb Space Telescope} (JWST) SMACS~0723 field using new post-launch calibrations to conduct a search for ultra-high-redshift galaxies ($z > 9$) present within the Epoch of Reionisation. We conduct this search by modelling photometric redshifts in several ways for all sources and by applying conservative magnitude cuts ($m_{\rm F200W} < 28$) to identify strong Lyman breaks greater than 1 magnitude. We find four $z > 9$ candidate galaxies which have not previously been identified, with one object at $z = 11.5$, and another which is possibly a close pair of galaxies. We measure redshifts for candidate galaxies from other studies and find the recovery rate to be only 23 per cent, with many being assigned lower redshift, dusty solutions in our work. Most of our $z > 9$ sample show evidence for Balmer-breaks, or extreme emission lines from H$β$ and [OIII], demonstrating that the stellar populations could be advanced in age or very young depending on the cause of the F444W excess. We discuss the resolved structures of these early galaxies and find that the Sérsic indices reveal a mixture of light concentration levels, but that the sizes of all our systems are exceptionally small ($< 0.5$~kpc). These systems have stellar masses M$_{*} \sim 10^{9.0}$ M$_{\odot}$, with our $z \sim 11.5$ candidate a dwarf galaxy with a stellar mass M$_{*} \sim 10^{7.8}$ -- $10^{8.2}$ M$_{\odot}$. These candidate ultra high-redshift galaxies are excellent targets for future NIRSpec observations aimed to better understand their physical nature.

Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey: Selection and Characterization of Luminous Interstellar Medium Reservoirs in the z>6.5 Universe

The Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) is a cycle-7 ALMA Large Program (LP) that is identifying and performing a first characterization of many of the most luminous star-forming galaxies known in the z>6.5 universe. REBELS is providing this probe by systematically scanning 40 of the brightest UV-selected galaxies identified over a 7-deg**2 area for bright 158-micron [CII] and 88-micron [OIII] lines and dust-continuum emission. Selection of the 40 REBELS targets was done by combining our own and other photometric selections, each of which is subject to extensive vetting using three completely independent sets of photometry and template-fitting codes. Building on the observational strategy deployed in two pilot programs, we are increasing the number of massive interstellar medium (ISM) reservoirs known at z>6.5 by ~4-5x to >30. In this manuscript, we motivate the observational strategy deployed in the REBELS program and present initial results. Based on the 60.6 hours of ALMA observations taken in the first year of the program (November 2019 to January 2020), 18 highly significant >~7sigma [CII] lines have already been discovered, the bulk of which (13/18) also show >~3.3 sigma dust-continuum emission. These newly discovered lines more than triple the number of bright ISM-cooling lines known in the z>6.5 universe, such that the number of ALMA-derived redshifts at z>6.5 already rival Lya redshift discoveries. An analysis of the completeness of our search results vs. star formation rate (SFR) suggests an ~79% efficiency in scanning for [CII] when the SFR(UV+IR) is in excess of 28 M_sol/yr. These new LP results further demonstrate ALMA's efficiency as a "redshift machine", particularly in the epoch of reionization.

The ALMA REBELS Survey: Average [CII] $158\,\rm{μm}$ sizes of Star-Forming Galaxies from $z\sim 7$ to $z\sim 4$

We present the average [CII] $158\,\rm{μm}$ emission line sizes of UV-bright star-forming galaxies at $z\sim7$. Our results are derived from a stacking analysis of [CII] $158\,\rm{μm}$ emission lines and dust continua observed by ALMA, taking advantage of the large program Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS). We find that the average [CII] emission at $z\sim7$ has an effective radius $r_e$ of $2.2\pm0.2\,\rm{kpc}$. It is $\gtrsim2\times$ larger than the dust continuum and the rest-frame UV emission, in agreement with recently reported measurements for $z\lesssim6$ galaxies. Additionally, we compared the average [CII] size with $4<z<6$ galaxies observed by the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). By analysing [CII] sizes of $4<z<6$ galaxies in two redshift bins, we find an average [CII] size of $r_{\rm e}=2.2\pm0.2\,\rm{kpc}$ and $r_{\rm e}=2.5\pm0.2\,\rm{kpc}$ for $z\sim5.5$ and $z\sim4.5$ galaxies, respectively. These measurements show that star-forming galaxies, on average, show no evolution in the size of the [CII] $158\,{\rm μm}$ emitting regions at redshift between $z\sim7$ and $z\sim4$. This finding suggest that the star-forming galaxies could be morphologically dominated by gas over a wide redshift range.

The ALMA REBELS Survey: The Cosmic HI Gas Mass Density in Galaxies at $z\approx 7$

The neutral atomic gas content of individual galaxies at large cosmological distances has until recently been difficult to measure due to the weakness of the hyperfine HI 21-cm transition. Here we estimate the HI gas mass of a sample of main-sequence star-forming galaxies at $z\sim 6.5 - 7.8$ surveyed for [CII]$-158μ$m emission as part of the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS), using a recent calibration of the [CII]-to-HI conversion factor. We find that the HI gas mass excess in galaxies increases as a function of redshift, with an average of $M_{\rm HI} / M_\star \approx 10$, corresponding to HI gas mass fractions of $f_{\rm HI} = M_{\rm HI} / (M_\star + M_{\rm HI}) = 90\%$, at $z\approx 7$. Based on the [CII]-$158μ$m luminosity function (LF) derived from the same sample of galaxies, we further place constraints on the cosmic HI gas mass density in galaxies ($ρ_{\rm HI}$) at this redshift, which we measure to be $ρ_{\rm HI} = 7.1^{+6.4}_{-3.0} \times 10^{6}\,M_{\odot}\,{\rm Mpc^{-3}}$. This estimate is substantially lower by a factor of $\approx 10$ than that inferred from an extrapolation of damped Lyman-$α$ absorber (DLA) measurements, and largely depend on the exact [CII] LF adopted. However, we find this decrease in $ρ_{\rm HI}$ to be consistent with recent simulations and argue that this apparent discrepancy is likely a consequence of the DLA sightlines predominantly probing the substantial fraction of HI gas in high-$z$ galactic halos, whereas [CII] traces the HI in the ISM associated with star formation. We make predictions for this build-up of neutral gas in galaxies as a function of redshift, showing that at $z\gtrsim 5$ only $\approx 10\%$ of the cosmic HI gas content is confined in galaxies and associated with the star-forming ISM.

The ALMA REBELS Survey: the dust content of $z \sim 7$ Lyman Break Galaxies

We include a fully coupled treatment of metal and dust enrichment into the Delphi semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to explain the dust content of 13 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) detected by the Atacama Large millimetre Array (ALMA) REBELS Large Program at $z\simeq 7$. We find that the galaxy dust mass, $M_d$, is regulated by the combination of SNII dust production, astration, shock destruction, and ejection in outflows; grain growth (with a standard timescale $τ_0= 30$ Myr) plays a negligible role. The model predicts a dust-to-stellar mass ratio of $\sim 0.07-0.1\%$ and a UV-to-total star formation rate relation such that $log (ψ_{\rm UV}) = -0.05 ~[log (ψ)]^{2} + 0.86 ~log(ψ) -0.05$ (implying that 55-80\% of the star formation is obscured) for REBELS galaxies with stellar mass $M_* = 10^{9-10} M_\odot$. This relation reconciles the intrinsic UV luminosity of LBGs with their observed luminosity function at $z=7$. However, 2 out of the 13 systems show dust-to-stellar mass ratios ($\sim 0.94-1.1\%$) that are up to $18\times$ larger than expected from the fiducial relation. Due to the physical coupling between dust and metal enrichment, even decreasing $τ_0$ to very low values (0.3 Myr) only increases the dust-to-stellar mass ratio by a factor $ \sim 2$. Given that grain growth is not a viable explanation for such high observed ratios of the dust-to-stellar mass, we propose alternative solutions.

The ALMA REBELS Survey. Epoch of Reionization giants: properties of dusty galaxies at $z \approx 7$

We analyse FIR dust continuum measurements for 14 galaxies ($z\approx 7$) in the ALMA REBELS LP to derive their physical properties. Our model uses three input data: (a) the UV spectral slope, $β$, (b) the observed UV continuum flux at $1500$A, $F_{\rm UV}$, (c) the observed continuum flux at $\approx 158μ$m, $F_{158}$, and considers Milky Way (MW) and SMC extinction curves, along with different dust geometries. We find that REBELS galaxies have (28-90.5)% of their star formation obscured; the total (UV+IR) star formation rates are in the range $31.5 < {\rm SFR}/ (M_\odot {\rm yr}^{-1}) < 129.5$. The sample-averaged dust mass and temperature are $(1.3\pm 1.1)\times 10^7 M_\odot$ and $52 \pm 11$ K, respectively. In some galaxies dust is abundant (REBELS-14, $M'_d \approx 3.4 \times 10^7 M_\odot$), or hot (REBELS-18, $T'_d \approx 67$ K). The dust distribution is compact ($<0.3$ kpc for 70% of the galaxies). The dust yield per supernova is $0.1 \le y_d/M_\odot \le 3.3$, with 70% of the galaxies requiring $y_d < 0.25 M_\odot$. Three galaxies (REBELS-12, 14, 39) require $y_d > 1 M_\odot$. With the SFR predicted by the model and a MW extinction curve, REBELS galaxies detected in [CII] nicely follow the local $L_{\rm CII}-$SFR relation, and are approximately located on the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. The sample-averaged gas depletion time is of $0.11\, y_P^{-2}$ Gyr, where $y_P$ is the ratio of the gas-to-stellar distribution radius. For some systems a solution simultaneously matching the observed ($β, F_{\rm UV}, F_{158}$) values cannot be found. This occurs when the index $I_m = (F_{158}/F_{\rm UV})/(β-β_{\rm int})$, where $β_{\rm int}$ is the intrinsic UV slope, exceeds $I_m^*\approx 1120$ for a MW curve. For these objects we argue that the FIR and UV emitting regions are not co-spatial, questioning the use of the IRX-$β$ relation.

The ionizing properties of two bright Ly$α$ emitters in the BDF reionized bubble at z=7

We investigate the ionizing properties of the pair of bright Ly$α$ emitting galaxies BDF521 and BDF2195 at z=7.012 in order to constrain their contribution to the formation of the BDF "reionized bubble". We obtain constraints on UV emission lines (CIV$λ1548$ doublet, HeII$λ1640$, OIII]$λ1660$ doublet, and CIII]$λ1909$ doublet) from deep VLT-XSHOOTER observations and compare them to those available for other high-redshift objects, and to models with mixed stellar and AGN emission. We use this spectroscopic information together with the photometry available in the field to constrain the physical properties of the two objects using the spectro-photometric fitting code BEAGLE. We do not detect any significant emission at the expected position of UV lines, with 3$σ$ upper limits of EW$\lesssim$2-7 AA rest-frame. We find that the two objects have lower CIII] emission than expected on the basis of the correlation between the Ly$α$ and CIII] EWs. The EW limits on CIV and HeII emission exclude pure AGN templates at $\sim2-3σ$ significance, and only models with a $\lesssim$40% AGN contribution are compatible with the observations. The two objects are found to be relatively young ($\sim$20-30 Myrs) and metal-poor ($\lesssim 0.3 Z_{\odot}$) with stellar masses of a few $10^9M_{\odot}$. Their production rate of hydrogen ionizing photons per intrinsic UV luminosity is log($ξ_{ion}^*$/Hz erg$^{-1}$)=25.02-25.26, consistent with values typically found in high-redshift galaxies, but more than twice lower than values measured in $z>$7 galaxies with strong CIII] and/or optical line emission ($\simeq$25.6-25.7). The two BDF emitters have no evidence of higher than average ionizing capabilities and are not capable of reionizing their surroundings by their own means under realistic assumptions on the escape fraction of ionizing photons. The REBELS ALMA Survey: cosmic dust temperature evolution out to z $\sim$ 7

ALMA observations have revealed the presence of dust in the first generations of galaxies in the Universe. However, the dust temperature $T_d$ remains mostly unconstrained due to the few available FIR continuum data at redshift $z>5$. This introduces large uncertainties in several properties of high-$z$ galaxies, namely their dust masses, infrared luminosities, and obscured fraction of star formation. Using a new method based on simultaneous [CII] 158$μ$m line and underlying dust continuum measurements, we derive $T_ d$ in the continuum and [CII] detected $z\approx 7$ galaxies in the ALMA Large Project REBELS sample. We find $39\ \mathrm{K} < T_d < 58\ \mathrm{K}$, and dust masses in the narrow range $M_d = (0.9-3.6)\times 10^7 M_{\odot}$. These results allow us to extend for the first time the reported $T_d(z)$ relation into the Epoch of Reionization. We produce a new physical model that explains the increasing $T_ d(z)$ trend with the decrease of gas depletion time, $t_{dep}=M_g/\mathrm{SFR}$, induced by the higher cosmological accretion rate at early times; this hypothesis yields $T_d \propto (1+z)^{0.4}$. The model also explains the observed $T_d$ scatter at a fixed redshift. We find that dust is warmer in obscured sources, as a larger obscuration results in more efficient dust heating. For UV-transparent (obscured) galaxies, $T_d$ only depends on the gas column density (metallicity), $T_d \propto N_H^{1/6}$ ($T_d \propto Z^{-1/6}$). REBELS galaxies are on average relatively transparent, with effective gas column densities around $N_H \simeq (0.03-1)\times 10^{21} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$. We predict that other high-$z$ galaxies (e.g. MACS0416-Y1, A2744-YD4), with estimated $T_d \gg 60$ K, are significantly obscured, low-metallicity systems. In fact $T_d$ is higher in metal-poor systems due to their smaller dust content, which for fixed $L_{ IR}$ results in warmer temperatures.

First observational support for overlapping reionized bubbles generated by a galaxy overdensity

We present the analysis of deep HST multi-band imaging of the BDF field specifically designed to identify faint companions around two of the few Ly-alpha emitting galaxies spectroscopically confirmed at z~7 (Vanzella et al. 2011). Although separated by only 4.4 proper Mpc these galaxies cannot generate HII regions large enough to explain visibility of their Ly-alpha line, thus requiring a population of fainter ionizing sources in their vicinity. We use deep HST and VLT-Hawk-I data to select z~7 Lyman break galaxies around the emitters. We select 6 new robust z~7 LBGs at Y~26.5-27.5 whose average spectral energy distribution is consistent with the objects being at the redshift of the close-by Ly-alpha emitters. The resulting number density of z~7 LBGs in the BDF field is a factor ~3-4 higher than expected in random pointings of the same size. We compare these findings with cosmological hydrodynamic plus radiative transfer simulations of a universe with a half neutral IGM: we find that indeed Ly-alpha emitter pairs are only found in completely ionized regions characterized by significant LBG overdensities. Our findings match the theoretical prediction that the first ionization fronts are generated within significant galaxy overdensities and support a scenario where faint, "normal" star-forming galaxies are responsible for reionization.

The colour distribution of galaxies at redshift five

We present the results of a study investigating the rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) spectral slopes of redshift z~5 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). By combining deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the CANDELS and HUDF fields with ground-based imaging from the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS), we have produced a large sample of z~5 LBGs spanning an unprecedented factor of >100 in UV luminosity. Based on this sample we find a clear colour-magnitude relation (CMR) at z~5, such that the rest-frame UV slopes (beta) of brighter galaxies are notably redder than their fainter counterparts. We determine that the z~5 CMR is well described by a linear relationship of the form: d beta = (-0.12 +/- 0.02) d Muv, with no clear evidence for a change in CMR slope at faint magnitudes (i.e. Muv > -18.9). Using the results of detailed simulations we are able, for the first time, to infer the intrinsic (i.e. free from noise) variation of galaxy colours around the CMR at z~5. We find significant (12 sigma) evidence for intrinsic colour variation in the sample as a whole. Our results also demonstrate that the width of the intrinsic UV slope distribution of z~5 galaxies increases from Delta(beta)=0.1 at Muv=-18 to Delta(beta)=0.4 at Muv=-21. We suggest that the increasing width of the intrinsic galaxy colour distribution and the CMR itself are both plausibly explained by a luminosity independent lower limit of beta=-2.1, combined with an increase in the fraction of red galaxies in brighter UV-luminosity bins.

The visibility of Lyman Alpha Emitters: constraining reionization, ionizing photons and dust

We build a physical model for high-redshift Lyman Alpha emitters (LAEs) by coupling state of the art cosmological simulations (GADGET-2) with a dust model and a radiative transfer code (pCRASH). We post-process the cosmological simulation with pCRASH using five different values of the escape fraction of hydrogen ionizing photons (f_esc=0.05,0.25,0.5,0.75,0.95) until reionization is complete, i.e. the average neutral hydrogen fraction drops to <X_HI>~10^-4. Then, the only free-parameter left to match model results to the observed Lya and UV luminosity functions of LAEs at z~6.6 is the relative escape of Lyman Alpha (Lya) and continuum photons from the galactic environment (f_alpha/f_c). We find a three-dimensional degeneracy such that the theoretical model can be reconciled with observations for an IGM Lya transmission <T_alpha>_LAE~38-50% (which translates to <X_HI>~0.5-10^-4 for Gaussian emission lines), f_esc~0.05-0.50 and f_alpha/f_c~0.6-1.8.

Simulating high-redshift galaxies

Recent observations have gathered a considerable sample of high redshift galaxy candidates and determined the evolution of their luminosity function (LF). To interpret these findings, we use cosmological SPH simulations including, in addition to standard physical processes, a detailed treatment of the Pop III-Pop II transition in early objects. The simulated high-z galaxies match remarkably well the amplitude and slope of the observed LF in the redshift range 5<z<10. The LF shifts towards fainter luminosities with increasing redshift, while its faint-end slope keeps an almost constant value, α~-2. The stellar populations of high-z galaxies have ages of 100-300 (40-130) Myr at z=5 (z=7-8), implying an early (z>9.4) start of their star formation activity; the specific star formation rate is almost independent of galactic stellar mass. These objects are enriched rapidly with metals and galaxies identified by HST/WFC3 (M_UV < -18) show metallicities ~0.1 Zsun even at z=7-8. Most of the simulated galaxies at z~7 (noticeably the smallest ones) are virtually dust-free, and none of them has an extinction larger than E(B-V) = 0.01. The bulk (50%) of the ionizing photons is produced by objects populating the faint-end of the LF (M_UV < -16), which JWST will resolve up to z=7.3. PopIII stars continue to form essentially at all redshifts; however, at z=6 (z=10) the contribution of Pop III stars to the total galactic luminosity is always less than 5% for M_UV < -17 (M_UV < -16). The typical high-z galaxies closely resemble the GRB host galaxy population observed at lower redshifts, strongly encouraging the use of GRBs to detect the first galaxies.

High redshift Lya emitters: clues on the Milky Way infancy

With the aim of determining if Milky Way (MW) progenitors could be identified as high redshift Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) we have derived the intrinsic properties of z ~ 5.7 MW progenitors, which are then used to compute their observed Lyman-alpha luminosity, L_alpha, and equivalent width, EW. MW progenitors visible as LAEs are selected according to the canonical observational criterion, L_alpha > 10^42 erg/s and EW > 20 A. Progenitors of MW-like galaxies have L_alpha = 10^(39-43.25) erg/s, making some of them visible as LAEs. In any single MW merger tree realization, typically only 1 (out of ~ 50) progenitor meets the LAE selection criterion, but the probability to have at least one LAE is very high, P = 68%. The identified LAE stars have ages, t_* ~ 150-400 Myr at z ~ 5.7 with the exception of five small progenitors with t_* < 5 Myr and large EW = 60-130 A. LAE MW progenitors provide > 10% of the halo very metal-poor stars [Fe/H] < -2, thus establishing a potentially fruitful link between high-z galaxies and the Local Universe.

Lyman Alpha Emitter Evolution in the Reionization Epoch

Combining cosmological SPH simulations with a previously developed Lyman Alpha production/transmission model and the Early Reionization Model (ERM, reionization ends at redshift z~7), we obtain Lyman Alpha and UV Luminosity Functions (LFs) for Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) for redshifts between 5.7 and 7.6. Matching model results to observations at z~5.7 requires escape fractions of Lyman Alpha, f_alpha=0.3, and UV (non-ionizing) continuum photons, f_c=0.22, corresponding to a color excess, E(B-V)=0.15. We find that (i) f_c increases towards higher redshifts, due the decreasing mean dust content of galaxies, (ii) the evolution of f_alpha/f_c hints at the dust content of the ISM becoming progressively inhomogeneous/clumped with decreasing redshift. The clustering photoionization boost is important during the initial reionization phases but has little effect on the Lyman Alpha LF for a highly ionized IGM. Halo (stellar) masses are in the range 10.0 < \log M_h < 11.8 (8.1 < \log M_* < 10.4) with M_h \propto M_*^{0.64}. The star formation rates are between 3-120 solar masses per year, mass-weighted mean ages are greater than 20 Myr at all redshifts, while the mean stellar metallicity increases from Z=0.12 to 0.22 solar metallicity from z~7.6 to z~5.7; both age and metallicity positively correlate with stellar mass. The brightest LAEs are all characterized by large star formation rates and intermediate ages (~200 Myr), while objects in the faint end of the Lyman Alpha LF show large age and star formation rate spreads. With no more free parameters, the Spectral Energy Distributions of three LAE at z~5.7 observed by Lai et al. (2007) are well reproduced by an intermediate age (182-220 Myr) stellar population and the above E(B-V) value.
