[CII] halos in ALPINE galaxies: smoking-gun of galactic outflows?

ALMA observations have revealed that many high redshift galaxies are surrounded by extended (10-15 kpc) [CII]-emitting halos which are not predicted by even the most advanced zoom-in simulations. Using a semi-analytical model, in a previous work we suggested that such halos are produced by starburst-driven, catastrophically cooling outflows. Here, we further improve the model and compare its predictions with data from 7 star-forming (10≲SFR/M⊙yr−1<10010\lesssim \rm SFR/ M_\odot \rm yr^{-1}<100) galaxies at z=4-6, observed in the ALPINE survey. We find that (a) detected [CII] halos are a natural by-product of starburst-driven outflows; (b) the outflow mass loading factors are in the range 4≲η≲74\lesssimη\lesssim 7, with higher ηη values for lower-mass, lower-SFR systems, and scale with stellar mass as η∝M∗−0.43η\propto M_*^{-0.43}, consistently with the momentum-driven hypothesis. Our model suggests that outflows are widespread phenomena in high-z galaxies. However, in low-mass systems the halo extended [CII] emission is likely too faint to be detected with the current levels of sensitivity.

A survey of high-zz galaxies: SERRA simulations

We introduce SERRA, a suite of zoom-in high-resolution (∼10 pc\sim 10\,\rm pc) cosmological simulations including non-equilibrium chemistry and on-the-fly radiative transfer. The outputs are post-processed to derive galaxy UV+FIR continuum and emission line properties. Results are compared with available multi-wavelength data to constrain the physical properties (e.g., star formation rates, stellar/gas/dust mass, metallicity) of high-redshift 6≲z≲156 \lesssim z \lesssim 15 galaxies. This flagship paper focuses on the z=7.7z=7.7 sub-sample, including 202 galaxies with stellar mass 107M⊙≲M⋆≲5×1010M⊙10^7 M_\odot \lesssim M_\star \lesssim 5\times 10^{10}M_\odot, and specific star formation ranging from sSFR∼100 Gyr−1{\rm sSFR} \sim 100\,{\rm Gyr}^{-1} in young, low-mass galaxies to ∼10 Gyr−1\sim 10\,{\rm Gyr}^{-1} for older, massive ones. At this redshift, SERRA galaxies are typically bursty, i.e. they are located above the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation by a factor κs=3.03−1.8+4.9κ_s = 3.03^{+4.9}_{-1.8}, consistent with recent findings for [OIII] and [CII] emitters at high-zz. They also show relatively large IRX=LFIR/LUV{\rm IRX} = L_{\rm FIR}/L_{\rm UV} values as a result of their compact/clumpy morphology effectively blocking the stellar UV luminosity. Note that this conclusion might be affected by insufficient spatial resolution at the molecular cloud level. We confirm that early galaxies lie on the standard [CII]−SFR\rm [CII]-SFR relation; their observed L[OIII]/L[CII]≃1−10L_{\rm [OIII]}/L_{\rm [CII]} \simeq 1-10 ratios can be reproduced by a part of the SERRA galaxies without the need of a top-heavy IMF and/or anomalous C/O abundances. [OI] line intensities are similar to local ones, making ALMA high-zz detections challenging but feasible (∼6 hr\sim 6\,\rm hr for a SFR of 50 M⊙ yr−150\,M_\odot\,{\rm yr}^{-1}).

Interpreting ALMA non-detections of JWST super-early galaxies

Recent attempts to detect [OIII] 88μμm emission from super-early (z>10z>10) galaxy candidates observed by JWST have been unsuccessful. By using zoom-in simulations, we show that these galaxies are faint, and mostly fall below the local metal-poor [OIII]−SFR\rm [OIII]-SFR relation as a result of their low ionization parameter, Uion≲10−3U_{\rm ion}\lesssim 10^{-3}. Such low UionU_{\rm ion} values are found in galaxies that are in an early assembly stage, and whose stars are still embedded in high-density natal clouds. However, the most luminous galaxy in our sample (log[L[OIII]/L⊙]=8.4\rm{log}[L_{\rm{[OIII]}}/L_\odot] = 8.4, Uion≈0.1U_{\rm ion} \approx 0.1) could be detected by ALMA in only 2.82.8 hrs.

Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey: Selection and Characterization of Luminous Interstellar Medium Reservoirs in the z>6.5 Universe

The Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) is a cycle-7 ALMA Large Program (LP) that is identifying and performing a first characterization of many of the most luminous star-forming galaxies known in the z>6.5 universe. REBELS is providing this probe by systematically scanning 40 of the brightest UV-selected galaxies identified over a 7-deg**2 area for bright 158-micron [CII] and 88-micron [OIII] lines and dust-continuum emission. Selection of the 40 REBELS targets was done by combining our own and other photometric selections, each of which is subject to extensive vetting using three completely independent sets of photometry and template-fitting codes. Building on the observational strategy deployed in two pilot programs, we are increasing the number of massive interstellar medium (ISM) reservoirs known at z>6.5 by ~4-5x to >30. In this manuscript, we motivate the observational strategy deployed in the REBELS program and present initial results. Based on the 60.6 hours of ALMA observations taken in the first year of the program (November 2019 to January 2020), 18 highly significant >~7sigma [CII] lines have already been discovered, the bulk of which (13/18) also show >~3.3 sigma dust-continuum emission. These newly discovered lines more than triple the number of bright ISM-cooling lines known in the z>6.5 universe, such that the number of ALMA-derived redshifts at z>6.5 already rival Lya redshift discoveries. An analysis of the completeness of our search results vs. star formation rate (SFR) suggests an ~79% efficiency in scanning for [CII] when the SFR(UV+IR) is in excess of 28 M_sol/yr. These new LP results further demonstrate ALMA's efficiency as a "redshift machine", particularly in the epoch of reionization.

The ALMA REBELS Survey: Average [CII] 158 μm158\,\rm{μm} sizes of Star-Forming Galaxies from z∼7z\sim 7 to z∼4z\sim 4

We present the average [CII] 158 μm158\,\rm{μm} emission line sizes of UV-bright star-forming galaxies at z∼7z\sim7. Our results are derived from a stacking analysis of [CII] 158 μm158\,\rm{μm} emission lines and dust continua observed by ALMA, taking advantage of the large program Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS). We find that the average [CII] emission at z∼7z\sim7 has an effective radius rer_e of 2.2±0.2 kpc2.2\pm0.2\,\rm{kpc}. It is ≳2×\gtrsim2\times larger than the dust continuum and the rest-frame UV emission, in agreement with recently reported measurements for z≲6z\lesssim6 galaxies. Additionally, we compared the average [CII] size with 4<z<64<z<6 galaxies observed by the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). By analysing [CII] sizes of 4<z<64<z<6 galaxies in two redshift bins, we find an average [CII] size of re=2.2±0.2 kpcr_{\rm e}=2.2\pm0.2\,\rm{kpc} and re=2.5±0.2 kpcr_{\rm e}=2.5\pm0.2\,\rm{kpc} for z∼5.5z\sim5.5 and z∼4.5z\sim4.5 galaxies, respectively. These measurements show that star-forming galaxies, on average, show no evolution in the size of the [CII] 158 μm158\,{\rm μm} emitting regions at redshift between z∼7z\sim7 and z∼4z\sim4. This finding suggest that the star-forming galaxies could be morphologically dominated by gas over a wide redshift range.

The ALMA REBELS Survey: The Cosmic HI Gas Mass Density in Galaxies at z≈7z\approx 7

The neutral atomic gas content of individual galaxies at large cosmological distances has until recently been difficult to measure due to the weakness of the hyperfine HI 21-cm transition. Here we estimate the HI gas mass of a sample of main-sequence star-forming galaxies at z∼6.5−7.8z\sim 6.5 - 7.8 surveyed for [CII]−158μ-158μm emission as part of the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS), using a recent calibration of the [CII]-to-HI conversion factor. We find that the HI gas mass excess in galaxies increases as a function of redshift, with an average of MHI/M⋆≈10M_{\rm HI} / M_\star \approx 10, corresponding to HI gas mass fractions of fHI=MHI/(M⋆+MHI)=90%f_{\rm HI} = M_{\rm HI} / (M_\star + M_{\rm HI}) = 90\%, at z≈7z\approx 7. Based on the [CII]-158μ158μm luminosity function (LF) derived from the same sample of galaxies, we further place constraints on the cosmic HI gas mass density in galaxies (ρHIρ_{\rm HI}) at this redshift, which we measure to be ρHI=7.1−3.0+6.4×106 M⊙ Mpc−3ρ_{\rm HI} = 7.1^{+6.4}_{-3.0} \times 10^{6}\,M_{\odot}\,{\rm Mpc^{-3}}. This estimate is substantially lower by a factor of ≈10\approx 10 than that inferred from an extrapolation of damped Lyman-αα absorber (DLA) measurements, and largely depend on the exact [CII] LF adopted. However, we find this decrease in ρHIρ_{\rm HI} to be consistent with recent simulations and argue that this apparent discrepancy is likely a consequence of the DLA sightlines predominantly probing the substantial fraction of HI gas in high-zz galactic halos, whereas [CII] traces the HI in the ISM associated with star formation. We make predictions for this build-up of neutral gas in galaxies as a function of redshift, showing that at z≳5z\gtrsim 5 only ≈10%\approx 10\% of the cosmic HI gas content is confined in galaxies and associated with the star-forming ISM.

The ALMA REBELS Survey: the dust content of z∼7z \sim 7 Lyman Break Galaxies

We include a fully coupled treatment of metal and dust enrichment into the Delphi semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to explain the dust content of 13 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) detected by the Atacama Large millimetre Array (ALMA) REBELS Large Program at z≃7z\simeq 7. We find that the galaxy dust mass, MdM_d, is regulated by the combination of SNII dust production, astration, shock destruction, and ejection in outflows; grain growth (with a standard timescale τ0=30τ_0= 30 Myr) plays a negligible role. The model predicts a dust-to-stellar mass ratio of ∼0.07−0.1%\sim 0.07-0.1\% and a UV-to-total star formation rate relation such that log(ψUV)=−0.05 [log(ψ)]2+0.86 log(ψ)−0.05log (ψ_{\rm UV}) = -0.05 ~[log (ψ)]^{2} + 0.86 ~log(ψ) -0.05 (implying that 55-80\% of the star formation is obscured) for REBELS galaxies with stellar mass M∗=109−10M⊙M_* = 10^{9-10} M_\odot. This relation reconciles the intrinsic UV luminosity of LBGs with their observed luminosity function at z=7z=7. However, 2 out of the 13 systems show dust-to-stellar mass ratios (∼0.94−1.1%\sim 0.94-1.1\%) that are up to 18×18\times larger than expected from the fiducial relation. Due to the physical coupling between dust and metal enrichment, even decreasing τ0τ_0 to very low values (0.3 Myr) only increases the dust-to-stellar mass ratio by a factor ∼2 \sim 2. Given that grain growth is not a viable explanation for such high observed ratios of the dust-to-stellar mass, we propose alternative solutions.

The ALMA REBELS Survey. Epoch of Reionization giants: properties of dusty galaxies at z≈7z \approx 7

We analyse FIR dust continuum measurements for 14 galaxies (z≈7z\approx 7) in the ALMA REBELS LP to derive their physical properties. Our model uses three input data: (a) the UV spectral slope, ββ, (b) the observed UV continuum flux at 15001500A, FUVF_{\rm UV}, (c) the observed continuum flux at ≈158μ\approx 158μm, F158F_{158}, and considers Milky Way (MW) and SMC extinction curves, along with different dust geometries. We find that REBELS galaxies have (28-90.5)% of their star formation obscured; the total (UV+IR) star formation rates are in the range 31.5<SFR/(M⊙yr−1)<129.531.5 < {\rm SFR}/ (M_\odot {\rm yr}^{-1}) < 129.5. The sample-averaged dust mass and temperature are (1.3±1.1)×107M⊙(1.3\pm 1.1)\times 10^7 M_\odot and 52±1152 \pm 11 K, respectively. In some galaxies dust is abundant (REBELS-14, Md′≈3.4×107M⊙M'_d \approx 3.4 \times 10^7 M_\odot), or hot (REBELS-18, Td′≈67T'_d \approx 67 K). The dust distribution is compact (<0.3<0.3 kpc for 70% of the galaxies). The dust yield per supernova is 0.1≤yd/M⊙≤3.30.1 \le y_d/M_\odot \le 3.3, with 70% of the galaxies requiring yd<0.25M⊙y_d < 0.25 M_\odot. Three galaxies (REBELS-12, 14, 39) require yd>1M⊙y_d > 1 M_\odot. With the SFR predicted by the model and a MW extinction curve, REBELS galaxies detected in [CII] nicely follow the local LCII−L_{\rm CII}-SFR relation, and are approximately located on the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. The sample-averaged gas depletion time is of 0.11 yP−20.11\, y_P^{-2} Gyr, where yPy_P is the ratio of the gas-to-stellar distribution radius. For some systems a solution simultaneously matching the observed (β,FUV,F158β, F_{\rm UV}, F_{158}) values cannot be found. This occurs when the index Im=(F158/FUV)/(β−βint)I_m = (F_{158}/F_{\rm UV})/(β-β_{\rm int}), where βintβ_{\rm int} is the intrinsic UV slope, exceeds Im∗≈1120I_m^*\approx 1120 for a MW curve. For these objects we argue that the FIR and UV emitting regions are not co-spatial, questioning the use of the IRX-ββ relation.

The REBELS ALMA Survey: cosmic dust temperature evolution out to z ∼\sim 7

ALMA observations have revealed the presence of dust in the first generations of galaxies in the Universe. However, the dust temperature TdT_d remains mostly unconstrained due to the few available FIR continuum data at redshift z>5z>5. This introduces large uncertainties in several properties of high-zz galaxies, namely their dust masses, infrared luminosities, and obscured fraction of star formation. Using a new method based on simultaneous [CII] 158μμm line and underlying dust continuum measurements, we derive TdT_ d in the continuum and [CII] detected z≈7z\approx 7 galaxies in the ALMA Large Project REBELS sample. We find 39 K<Td<58 K39\ \mathrm{K} < T_d < 58\ \mathrm{K}, and dust masses in the narrow range Md=(0.9−3.6)×107M⊙M_d = (0.9-3.6)\times 10^7 M_{\odot}. These results allow us to extend for the first time the reported Td(z)T_d(z) relation into the Epoch of Reionization. We produce a new physical model that explains the increasing Td(z)T_ d(z) trend with the decrease of gas depletion time, tdep=Mg/SFRt_{dep}=M_g/\mathrm{SFR}, induced by the higher cosmological accretion rate at early times; this hypothesis yields Td∝(1+z)0.4T_d \propto (1+z)^{0.4}. The model also explains the observed TdT_d scatter at a fixed redshift. We find that dust is warmer in obscured sources, as a larger obscuration results in more efficient dust heating. For UV-transparent (obscured) galaxies, TdT_d only depends on the gas column density (metallicity), Td∝NH1/6T_d \propto N_H^{1/6} (Td∝Z−1/6T_d \propto Z^{-1/6}). REBELS galaxies are on average relatively transparent, with effective gas column densities around NH≃(0.03−1)×1021cm−2N_H \simeq (0.03-1)\times 10^{21} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}. We predict that other high-zz galaxies (e.g. MACS0416-Y1, A2744-YD4), with estimated Td≫60T_d \gg 60 K, are significantly obscured, low-metallicity systems. In fact TdT_d is higher in metal-poor systems due to their smaller dust content, which for fixed LIRL_{ IR} results in warmer temperatures.

Warm dust in high-z galaxies: origin and implications

ALMA observations have revealed the presence of dust in galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (redshift z>6z>6). However, the dust temperature, TdT_d, remains unconstrained, and this introduces large uncertainties, particularly in the dust mass determinations. Using an analytical and physically-motivated model, we show that dust in high-zz, star-forming giant molecular clouds (GMC), largely dominating the observed far-infrared luminosity, is warmer (Td>60 KT_d > 60\ \mathrm{K}) than locally. This is due to the more compact GMC structure induced by the higher gas pressure and turbulence characterizing early galaxies. The compactness also delays GMC dispersal by stellar feedback, thus ∼40%\sim 40\% of the total UV radiation emitted by newly born stars remains obscured. A higher TdT_d has additional implications: it (a) reduces the tension between local and high-zz IRX-ββ relation, (b) alleviates the problem of the uncomfortably large dust masses deduced from observations of some EoR galaxies.

BCJ and KK Relations from BRST Symmetry and Supergravity Amplitudes

We use Pure Spinor string theory to construct suitable kinematical factors which explicitly satisfy the Kleiss-Kuijf (KK) relations. Using the formula conceived by Bern et al. and employed by us for 4- and 5-point amplitudes in a previous work, we are able to compute the 6-point supergravity amplitude from the corresponding SYM building blocks given by Mafra et al.. We derive the KK and Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) identities from the BRST invariance and we discuss the relations between Bern et al. building blocks and those of Mafra et al..

On Supergravity Amplitudes from Pure Spinor Strings

We use Pure Spinor String Theory to construct suitable building blocks to arrange the structure of supergravity amplitudes with n-points and at higher loops in a very convenient way. Following Mafra et al. proposal for N=4 super Yang-Mills amplitudes, we discuss its generalization to supergravity amplitudes. In particular, we first derive the building blocks for closed string amplitudes from closed vertices showing that, because of the factorization, several results of open string theory can be used; nevertheless, also new structures emerge. We provide a first list of these new ingredients and their BRST variations. Second, we analyze 4-point amplitudes showing how the different building blocks enter and finally we discuss the factorization of 5-point amplitudes in supergravity in terms of those structures.

Supersymmetric Fluid Dynamics

Recently Navier-Stokes (NS) equations have been derived from the duality between the black branes and a conformal fluid on the boundary of AdS_5. Nevertheless, the full correspondence has to be established between solutions of supergravity in AdS_5 and supersymmetric field theories on the boundary. That prompts the construction of NS equations for a supersymmetric fluid. In the framework of rigid susy, there are several possibilities and we propose one candidate. We deduce the equations of motion in two ways: both from the divergenless condition on the energy-momentum tensor and by a suitable parametrization of the auxiliary fields. We give the complete component expansion and a very preliminary analysis of the physics of this supersymmetric fluid.
