A low-threshold ultrahigh-energy neutrino search with the Askaryan Radio Array

In the pursuit of the measurement of the still-elusive ultrahigh-energy (UHE) neutrino flux at energies of order EeV, detectors using the in-ice Askaryan radio technique have increasingly targeted lower trigger thresholds. This has led to improved trigger-level sensitivity to UHE neutrinos. Working with data collected by the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA), we search for neutrino candidates at the lowest threshold achieved to date, leading to improved analysis-level sensitivities. A neutrino search on a data set with 208.7~days of livetime from the reduced-threshold fifth ARA station is performed, achieving a 68\% analysis efficiency over all energies on a simulated mixed-composition neutrino flux with an expected background of $0.10_{-0.04}^{+0.06}$ events passing the analysis. We observe one event passing our analysis and proceed to set a neutrino flux limit using a Feldman-Cousins construction. We show that the improved trigger-level sensitivity can be carried through an analysis, motivating the Phased Array triggering technique for use in future radio-detection experiments. We also include a projection using all available data from this detector. Finally, we find that future analyses will benefit from studies of events near the surface to fully understand the background expected for a large-scale detector.

Close, bright and boxy: the superluminous SN 2018hti

SN 2018hti was a very nearby (z=0.0614) superluminous supernova with an exceedingly bright absolute magnitude of -21.7 mag in r-band at maximum. The densely sampled pre-maximum light curves of SN 2018hti show a slow luminosity evolution and constrain the rise time to ~50 rest-frame days. We fitted synthetic light curves to the photometry to infer the physical parameters of the explosion of SN 2018hti for both the magnetar and the CSM-interaction scenarios. We conclude that one of two mechanisms could be powering the luminosity of SN 2018hti; interaction with ~10 Msun of circumstellar material or a magnetar with a magnetic field of B_p~1.3e13 G and initial period of P_spin~1.8 ms. From the nebular spectrum modelling we infer that SN 2018hti likely results from the explosion of a ~40 Msun progenitor star.

Experimental tests of sub-surface reflectors as an explanation for the ANITA anomalous events

The balloon-borne ANITA experiment is designed to detect ultra-high energy neutrinos via radio emissions produced by an in-ice shower. Although initially purposed for interactions within the Antarctic ice sheet, ANITA also demonstrated the ability to self-trigger on radio emissions from ultra-high energy charged cosmic rays interacting in the Earth's atmosphere. For showers produced above the Antarctic ice sheet, reflection of the down-coming radio signals at the Antarctic surface should result in a polarity inversion prior to subsequent observation at the $\sim$35-40 km altitude ANITA gondola. ANITA has published two anomalous instances of upcoming cosmic-rays with measured polarity opposite the remaining sample of $\sim$50 UHECR signals. The steep observed upwards incidence angles (25--30 degrees relative to the horizontal) require non-Standard Model physics if these events are due to in-ice neutrino interactions, as the Standard Model cross-section would otherwise prohibit neutrinos from penetrating the long required chord of Earth. Shoemaker et al. posit that glaciological effects may explain the steep observed anomalous events. We herein consider the scenarios offered by Shoemaker et al. and find them to be disfavored by extant ANITA and HiCal experimental data. We note that the recent report of four additional near-horizon anomalous ANITA-4 events, at $>3σ$ significance, are incompatible with their model, which requires significant signal transmission into the ice.

Improving sensitivity of the ARIANNA detector by rejecting thermal noise with deep learning

The ARIANNA experiment is an Askaryan detector designed to record radio signals induced by neutrino interactions in the Antarctic ice. Because of the low neutrino flux at high energies ($E > 10^{16} $), the physics output is limited by statistics. Hence, an increase in sensitivity significantly improves the interpretation of data and offers the ability to probe new parameter spaces. The amplitudes of the trigger threshold are limited by the rate of triggering on unavoidable thermal noise fluctuations. We present a real-time thermal noise rejection algorithm that enables the trigger thresholds to be lowered, which increases the sensitivity to neutrinos by up to a factor of two (depending on energy) compared to the current ARIANNA capabilities. A deep learning discriminator, based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), is implemented to identify and remove thermal events in real time. We describe a CNN trained on MC data that runs on the current ARIANNA microcomputer and retains 95 percent of the neutrino signal at a thermal noise rejection factor of $10^5$, compared to a template matching procedure which reaches only $10^2$ for the same signal efficiency. Then the results are verified in a lab measurement by feeding in generated neutrino-like signal pulses and thermal noise directly into the ARIANNA data acquisition system. Lastly, the same CNN is used to classify cosmic-rays events to make sure they are not rejected. The network classified 102 out of 104 cosmic-ray events as signal.

Measuring the Polarization Reconstruction Resolution of the ARIANNA Neutrino Detector with Cosmic Rays

The ARIANNA detector is designed to detect neutrinos with energies above $10^{17}$eV. Due to the similarities in generated radio signals, cosmic rays are often used as test beams for neutrino detectors. Some ARIANNA detector stations are equipped with antennas capable of detecting air showers. Since the radio emission properties of air showers are well understood, and the polarization of the radio signal can be predicted from the arrival direction, cosmic rays can be used as a proxy to assess the reconstruction capabilities of the ARIANNA neutrino detector. We report on dedicated efforts of reconstructing the polarization of cosmic-ray radio pulses. After correcting for difference in hardware, the two stations used in this study showed similar performance in terms of event rate and agreed with simulation. Subselecting high quality cosmic rays, the polarizations of these cosmic rays were reconstructed with a resolution of $2.5^{\circ}$ (68% containment), which agrees with the expected value obtained from simulation. A large fraction of this resolution originates from uncertainties in the predicted polarization because of the contribution of the subdominant Askaryan effect in addition to the dominant geomagnetic emission. Subselecting events with a zenith angle greater than $70^{\circ}$ removes most influence of the Askaryan emission, and, with limited statistics, we found the polarization uncertainty is reduced to $1.3^{\circ}$ (68% containment).

The SLAC T-510 experiment for radio emission from particle showers: detailed simulation study and interpretation

Over the last several decades, radio detection of air showers has been widely used to detect ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. We developed an experiment under controlled laboratory conditions at SLAC with which we measured the radio-frequency radiation from a charged particle shower produced by bunches of electrons as primaries with known energy. The shower took place in a target made of High Density Polyethylene located in a strong magnetic field. The experiment was designed so that Askaryan and magnetically-induced components of the radio emission could be measured independently. At the same time, we performed a detailed simulation of this experiment to predict the radio signal using two microscopic formalisms, endpoint and ZHS. In this paper, we present the simulation scheme and make a comparison with data characteristics such as linearity with magnetic field and amplitude. The simulations agree with the measurements within uncertainties and present a good description of the data. In particular, reflections within the target that accounted for the largest systematic uncertainties are addressed. The prediction of the amplitude of Askaryan emission agrees with measurements to within 5% for the endpoint formalism and 11% for the ZHS formalism. The amplitudes of magnetically-induced emission agree to within 5% for the endpoint formalism and less than 1% for the ZHS formalism. The agreement of the absolute scale of emission gives confidence in state-of-the-art air shower simulations which are based on the applied formalisms.

Triboelectric Backgrounds to radio-based UHE Neutrino Exeperiments

The proposed IceCube-Gen2 (ICG2) seeks to instrument ~500 sq. km of Antarctic ice near the geographic South Pole with radio antennas, in order to observe the highest energy (E>1 EeV) neutrinos in the Universe. To this end, ICG2 will use the impulsive radio-frequency (RF) signal produced by neutrino interactions in polar ice caps. In such experiments, rare single event candidates must be unambiguously separated from background; to date, signal identification strategies primarily reject thermal noise and anthropogenic backgrounds. Here, we consider the possibility that fake neutrino signals may also be naturally generated via the 'triboelectric effect'. This broadly includes any process in which force applied at a boundary layer results in displacement of surface charge, generating a potential difference ΔV. Wind blowing over granular surfaces such as snow can induce such a ΔV, with subsequent discharge. Discharges over nanosecond-timescales can then lead to RF emissions at characteristic MHz-GHz frequencies. We find that such backgrounds are evident in the several neutrino experiments considered, and are generally characterized by: a) a threshold wind velocity which likely depends on the experimental signal trigger threshold and layout; for the experiments considered herein, this value is typically O(10 m/s), b) frequency spectra generally shifted to the low-end of the frequency regime to which current radio experiments are typically sensitive (100-200 MHz), c) for the strongest background signals, an apparent preference for discharges from above-surface structures, although the presence of more isotropic, lower amplitude triboelectric discharges cannot be excluded.

Analysis of a Tau Neutrino Origin for the Near-Horizon Air Shower Events Observed by the Fourth Flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA)

We study in detail the sensitivity of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) to possible $ν_τ$ point source fluxes detected via $τ$-lepton-induced air showers. This investigation is framed around the observation of four upward-going extensive air shower events very close to the horizon seen in ANITA-IV. We find that these four upgoing events are not observationally inconsistent with $τ$-induced EASs from Earth-skimming $ν_τ$, both in their spectral properties as well as in their observed locations on the sky. These four events, as well as the overall diffuse and point source exposure to Earth-skimming $ν_τ$, are also compared against published ultrahigh-energy neutrino limits from the Pierre Auger Observatory. While none of these four events occurred at sky locations simultaneously visible by Auger, the implied fluence necessary for ANITA to observe these events is in strong tension with limits set by Auger across a wide range of energies and is additionally in tension with ANITA's Askaryan in-ice neutrino channel above $10^{19}$ eV. We conclude by discussing some of the technical challenges with simulating and analyzing these near horizon events and the potential for future observatories to observe similar events.

Long-baseline horizontal radio-frequency transmission through polar ice

We report on analysis of englacial radio-frequency (RF) pulser data received over horizontal baselines of 1--5 km, based on broadcasts from two sets of transmitters deployed to depths of up to 1500 meters at the South Pole. First, we analyze data collected usingtwo RF bicone transmitters 1400 meters below the ice surface, and frozen into boreholes drilled for the IceCube experiment in 2011. Additionally, in Dec., 2018, a fat-dipole antenna, fed by one of three high-voltage (~1 kV), fast (~(1-5 ns)) signal generators was lowered into the 1700-m deep icehole drilled for the South Pole Ice Core Experiment (SPICE), approximately 3 km from the geographic South Pole. Signals from transmitters were recorded on the five englacial multi-receiver ARA stations, with receiver depths between 60--200 m. We confirm the long, >1 km RF electric field attenuation length, test our observed signal arrival timing distributions against models, and measure birefringent asymmetries at the 0.15% level.

Blind Ptychography: Uniqueness and Ambiguities

Ptychography with an unknown mask and object is analyzed for general ptychographic measurement schemes that are strongly connected and possess an anchor. Under a mild constraint on the mask phase, it is proved that the masked object estimate must be the product of a block phase factor and the true masked object. This local uniqueness manifests itself in the phase drift equation that determines the ambiguity at different locations connected by ptychographic shifts. The proposed mixing schemes effectively connects the ambiguity throughout the whole domain such that a distinct ambiguity profile arises and consequently possess the global uniqueness that the block phases have an affine profile and that the object and mask can be simultaneously recovered up to a constant scaling factor and an affine phase factor.

Constraints on the Diffuse Flux of Ultra-High Energy Neutrinos from Four Years of Askaryan Radio Array Data in Two Stations

The Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) is an ultra-high energy (UHE, $>10^{17}$ eV) neutrino detector designed to observe neutrinos by searching for the radio waves emitted by the relativistic products of neutrino-nucleon interactions in Antarctic ice. In this paper, we present constraints on the diffuse flux of ultra-high energy neutrinos between $10^{16}-10^{21}$ eV resulting from a search for neutrinos in two complementary analyses, both analyzing four years of data (2013-2016) from the two deep stations (A2, A3) operating at that time. We place a 90 % CL upper limit on the diffuse all flavor neutrino flux at $10^{18}$ eV of $EF(E)=5.6\times10^{-16}$ $\textrm{cm}^{-2}$$\textrm{s}^{-1}$$\textrm{sr}^{-1}$. This analysis includes four times the exposure of the previous ARA result, and represents approximately 1/5 the exposure expected from operating ARA until the end of 2022.

HiCal 2: An instrument designed for calibration of the ANITA experiment and for Antarctic surface reflectivity measurements

The NASA supported High-Altitude Calibration (HiCal)-2 instrument flew as a companion balloon to the ANITA-4 experiment in December 2016. Based on a HV discharge pulser producing radio-frequency (RF) calibration pulses, HiCal-2 comprised two payloads, which flew for a combined 18 days, covering 1.5 revolutions of the Antarctic continent. ANITA-4 captured over 10,000 pulses from HiCal, both direct and reflected from the surface, at distances varying from 100-800 km, providing a large dataset for surface reflectivity measurements. Herein we present details on the design, construction and performance of HiCal-2.

Unusual Near-horizon Cosmic-ray-like Events Observed by ANITA-IV

ANITA's fourth long-duration balloon flight in late 2016 detected 29 cosmic-ray (CR)-like events on a background of $0.37^{+0.27}_{-0.17}$ anthropogenic events. CRs are mainly seen in reflection off the Antarctic ice sheets, creating a characteristic phase-inverted waveform polarity. However, four of the below-horizon CR-like events show anomalous non-inverted polarity, a $p = 5.3 \times 10^{-4}$ chance if due to background. All anomalous events are from locations near the horizon; ANITA-IV observed no steeply-upcoming anomalous events similar to the two such events seen in prior flights.

White Paper: ARIANNA-200 high energy neutrino telescope

The proposed ARIANNA-200 neutrino detector, located at sea-level on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, consists of 200 autonomous and independent detector stations separated by 1 kilometer in a uniform triangular mesh, and serves as a pathfinder mission for the future IceCube-Gen2 project. The primary science mission of ARIANNA-200 is to search for sources of neutrinos with energies greater than 10^17 eV, complementing the reach of IceCube. An ARIANNA observation of a neutrino source would provide strong insight into the enigmatic sources of cosmic rays. ARIANNA observes the radio emission from high energy neutrino interactions in the Antarctic ice. Among radio based concepts under current investigation, ARIANNA-200 would uniquely survey the vast majority of the southern sky at any instant in time, and an important region of the northern sky, by virtue of its location on the surface of the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica. The broad sky coverage is specific to the Moore's Bay site, and makes ARIANNA-200 ideally suited to contribute to the multi-messenger thrust by the US National Science Foundation, Windows on the Universe - Multi-Messenger Astrophysics, providing capabilities to observe explosive sources from unknown directions. The ARIANNA architecture is designed to measure the angular direction to within 3 degrees for every neutrino candidate, which too plays an important role in the pursuit of multi-messenger observations of astrophysical sources.

Recoil Effects on Reflection from Relativistic Mirrors in Laser Plasmas

Relativistic mirrors can be realized with strongly nonlinear Langmuir waves excited by intense laser pulses in underdense plasma. On reflection from the relativistic mirror the incident light affects the mirror motion. The corresponding recoil effects are investigated analytically and with particle-in-cell simulations. It is found that if the fluence of the incident electromagnetic wave exceeds a certain threshold, the relativistic mirror undergoes a significant back reaction and splits into multiple electron layers. The reflection coefficient of the relativistic mirror as well as the factors of electric field amplification and frequency upshift of the electromagnetic wave are obtained.

Accelerator measurements of magnetically-induced radio emission from particle cascades with applications to cosmic-ray air showers

For fifty years, cosmic-ray air showers have been detected by their radio emission. We present the first laboratory measurements that validate electrodynamics simulations used in air shower modeling. An experiment at SLAC provides a beam test of radio-frequency (RF) radiation from charged particle cascades in the presence of a magnetic field, a model system of a cosmic-ray air shower. This experiment provides a suite of controlled laboratory measurements to compare to particle-level simulations of RF emission, which are relied upon in ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray air shower detection. We compare simulations to data for intensity, linearity with magnetic field, angular distribution, polarization, and spectral content. In particular, we confirm modern predictions that the magnetically induced emission in a dielectric forms a cone that peaks at the Cherenkov angle and show that the simulations reproduce the data within systematic uncertainties.

Angular analysis of $B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-$

We present a measurement of angular observables, $P_4'$, $P_5'$, $P_6'$, $P_8'$, in the decay $B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-$, where $\ell^+\ell^-$ is either $e^+e^-$ or $μ^+μ^-$. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $711~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ containing $772\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar B$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider KEKB. Four angular observables, $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ are extracted in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the lepton system, $q^2$. We compare our results for $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ with Standard Model predictions including the $q^2$ region in which the LHCb collaboration reported the so-called $P_5'$ anomaly.

Characteristics of Four Upward-pointing Cosmic-ray-like Events Observed with ANITA

We report on four radio-detected cosmic-ray (CR) or CR-like events observed with the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), a NASA-sponsored long-duration balloon payload. Two of the four were previously identified as stratospheric CR air showers during the ANITA-I flight. A third stratospheric CR was detected during the ANITA-II flight. Here we report on characteristics these three unusual CR events, which develop nearly horizontally, 20-30~km above the surface of the Earth. In addition, we report on a fourth steeply upward-pointing ANITA-I CR-like radio event which has characteristics consistent with a primary that emerged from the surface of the ice. This suggests a possible $τ$-lepton decay as the origin of this event, but such an interpretation would require significant suppression of the Standard Model $τ$-neutrino cross section.

Energy and Flux Measurements of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays Observed During the First ANITA Flight

The first flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment recorded 16 radio signals that were emitted by cosmic-ray induced air showers. For 14 of these events, this radiation was reflected from the ice. The dominant contribution to the radiation from the deflection of positrons and electrons in the geomagnetic field, which is beamed in the direction of motion of the air shower. This radiation is reflected from the ice and subsequently detected by the ANITA experiment at a flight altitude of 36km. In this paper, we estimate the energy of the 14 individual events and find that the mean energy of the cosmic-ray sample is 2.9 EeV. By simulating the ANITA flight, we calculate its exposure for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We estimate for the first time the cosmic-ray flux derived only from radio observations. In addition, we find that the Monte Carlo simulation of the ANITA data set is in agreement with the total number of observed events and with the properties of those events.

Measurement of $CP$ asymmetry in the $D^{0} \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decay at Belle

We report a measurement of the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ using 921~fb$^{-1}$ data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(5S)$ resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The observed asymmetry is $$ A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-0.02 \pm 1.53 \pm 0.17) \%, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Performance of two Askaryan Radio Array stations and first results in the search for ultra-high energy neutrinos

Ultra-high energy neutrinos are interesting messenger particles since, if detected, they can transmit exclusive information about ultra-high energy processes in the Universe. These particles, with energies above $10^{16}\mathrm{eV}$, interact very rarely. Therefore, detectors that instrument several gigatons of matter are needed to discover them. The ARA detector is currently being constructed at South Pole. It is designed to use the Askaryan effect, the emission of radio waves from neutrino-induced cascades in the South Pole ice, to detect neutrino interactions at very high energies. With antennas distributed among 37 widely-separated stations in the ice, such interactions can be observed in a volume of several hundred cubic kilometers. Currently 3 deep ARA stations are deployed in the ice of which two have been taking data since the beginning of the year 2013. In this publication, the ARA detector "as-built" and calibrations are described. Furthermore, the data reduction methods used to distinguish the rare radio signals from overwhelming backgrounds of thermal and anthropogenic origin are presented. Using data from only two stations over a short exposure time of 10 months, a neutrino flux limit of $3 \cdot 10^{-6} \mathrm{GeV} / (\mathrm{cm^2 \ s \ sr})$ is calculated for a particle energy of 10^{18}eV, which offers promise for the full ARA detector.

Study of χ_{bJ}(1P) Properties in the Radiative Υ(2S) Decays

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using an underground liquid scintillator detector. It is located 53 km away from both Yangjiang and Taishan Nuclear Power Plants in Guangdong, China. The experimental hall, spanning more than 50 meters, is under a granite mountain of over 700 m overburden. Within six years of running, the detection of reactor antineutrinos can resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy at a confidence level of 3-4$σ$, and determine neutrino oscillation parameters $\sin^2θ_{12}$, $Δm^2_{21}$, and $|Δm^2_{ee}|$ to an accuracy of better than 1%. The JUNO detector can be also used to study terrestrial and extra-terrestrial neutrinos and new physics beyond the Standard Model. The central detector contains 20,000 tons liquid scintillator with an acrylic sphere of 35 m in diameter. $\sim$17,000 508-mm diameter PMTs with high quantum efficiency provide $\sim$75% optical coverage. The current choice of the liquid scintillator is: linear alkyl benzene (LAB) as the solvent, plus PPO as the scintillation fluor and a wavelength-shifter (Bis-MSB). The number of detected photoelectrons per MeV is larger than 1,100 and the energy resolution is expected to be 3% at 1 MeV. The calibration system is designed to deploy multiple sources to cover the entire energy range of reactor antineutrinos, and to achieve a full-volume position coverage inside the detector. The veto system is used for muon detection, muon induced background study and reduction. It consists of a Water Cherenkov detector and a Top Tracker system. The readout system, the detector control system and the offline system insure efficient and stable data acquisition and processing.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near $\sqrt{s}\approx10.58$ GeV.

Measurement of the amplitude ratio of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio $r_S$ of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays. Using the full data sample of $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is $r_S < 0.87$ at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of $r_S$ with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of $r_S$ indicates the sensitivity of the decay to $ϕ_3$ because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to $1/r_S$. The $r_S$ result is obtained from observables ($x_\pm$, $y_\pm$) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where $x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$, $y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$ and $ϕ_3 (δ_S)$ are the weak (strong) phase difference between $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on $c_i$ and $s_i$ parameters measured by CLEO.

Quantum numbers of the $X(3872)$ state and orbital angular momentum in its $ρ^0 Jψ$ decay

Angular correlations in $B^+\to X(3872) K^+$ decays, with $X(3872)\to ρ^0 J/ψ$, $ρ^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$, are used to measure orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the $J^{PC}$ value of the $X(3872)$ meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time performed without assuming a value for the orbital angular momentum, confirms the quantum numbers to be $J^{PC}=1^{++}$. The $X(3872)$ is found to decay predominantly through S wave and an upper limit of $4\%$ at $95\%$ C.L. is set on the fraction of D wave.

Antarctic Radio Frequency Albedo and Implications for Cosmic Ray Reconstruction

From an elevation of ~38 km, the balloon-borne ANtarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) is designed to detect the up-coming radio frequency (RF) signal resulting from a sub-surface neutrino-nucleon collision. Although no neutrinos have been discovered thus far, ANITA is nevertheless the only experiment to self-trigger on radio frequency emissions from cosmic-ray induced atmospheric air showers. In the majority of those cases, down-coming RF signals are observed via their reflection from the Antarctic ice sheet and back up to the ANITA interferometer. Estimating the energy scale of the incident cosmic rays therefore requires an estimate of the fractional power reflected at the air-ice interface. Similarly, inferring the energy of neutrinos interacting in-ice from observations of the upwards-directed signal refracting out to ANITA also requires consideration of signal coherence across the interface. By comparing the direct Solar RF signal intensity measured with ANITA to the surface-reflected Solar signal intensity, as a function of incident elevation angle relative to the surface Θ, we estimate the power reflection coefficients R(Θ). We find general consistency between our average measurements and the values of R(Θ) expected from the Fresnel equations, separately for horizontal- vs. vertical-polarizations.

Measurement of the branching fraction of $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ decays with the semileptonic tagging method and the full Belle data sample

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ decays using a data sample of $772 \times 10^6 B \bar{B}$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We reconstruct the accompanying $B$ meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ candidate in the recoiling event. We obtain a branching fraction of ${\cal B}(B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ) = [1.25 \pm 0.28 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.27({\rm syst.})] \times 10^{-4}$. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements and the expectation from calculations based on the Standard Model.

Measurement of the flavour-specific CP-violating asymmetry $a_{\rm sl}^s$ in $B_s^0$ decays

The CP-violating asymmetry a_{sl}^s is studied using semileptonic decays of Bs and anti-Bs mesons produced in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC, exploiting a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0/fb. The reconstructed final states are Ds^(+/-)μ^(-/+), with the Ds^(+/-) particle decaying in the ϕπ^(+/-) mode. The Ds^(+/-)μ^{-/+) yields are summed over Bs and anti-Bs initial states, and integrated with respect to decay time. Data-driven methods are used to measure efficiency ratios. We obtain $a_{sl}^s$ = (-0.06 +/- 0.50 +/- 0.36)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of the inclusive semileptonic branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow X^- \ell^+ ν_\ell)$ at Belle

We report a measurement of the inclusive semileptonic $B_s^0$ branching fraction in a $121~fb^{-1}$ data sample collected near the $Υ(5S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Events containing $B_s^0$ pairs are selected by reconstructing a tag side $D_s^+$ and identifying a signal side lepton $\ell^+$ ($\ell = e, μ$) that is required to have the same-sign charge to ensure that both originate from different $B_s^0$ mesons. The $B_s^0 \rightarrow X^- \ell^+ ν_\ell$ branching fraction is extracted from the ratio of the measured yields of $D_s^+$ mesons and $D_s^+ \ell^+$ pairs and the known production and branching fractions. The inclusive semileptonic branching fraction is measured to be $[9.6 \pm 0.4\text{(stat)} \pm 0.7\text{(syst)}]~\%$.

The ratio of the production cross-section times branching fraction between the $B_c^+ \to J/ψπ^+$ and the $B^+ \to J/ψK^+$ decays is measured to be $(0.68 \pm 0.10\,({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.03\,({\rm syst.}) \pm 0.05\,({\rm lifetime}))$% for $B_c^+$ and $B^+$ mesons with transverse momenta $p_{\rm T}>4 $GeV/$c$ and pseudorapidities $2.5<η<4.5$. The $B_c^+$ mass is directly measured to be $6273.7 \pm 1.3\,({\rm stat.}) \pm 1.6 \,({\rm syst.})$ MeV/$c^2$, and the measured mass difference with respect to the $B^+$ meson is $M(B_c^+)-M(B^+) = 994.6 \pm 1.3\,({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.6\,({\rm syst.})$ MeV/$c^2$.

Searches for $B^{0}_{(s)} \rightarrow J/ψ p \overline{p}$ and $B^{+} \to J/ψ p \overline{p} π^{+}$ decays

The results of searches for $B^{0}_{(s)} \rightarrow J/ψ p \overline{p}$ and $B^{+} \to J/ψ p \overline{p} π^{+}$ decays are reported. The analysis is based on a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions, collected with the LHCb detector. An excess with 2.8$\,σ$ significance is seen for the decay $B^{0}_{s} \to J/ψ p \overline{p}$ and an upper limit on the branching fraction is set at the 90 % confidence level: ${\cal B}(B^{0}_{s} \to J/ψ p \overline{p}) < 4.8 \times 10^{-6}$, which is the first such limit. No significant signals are seen for $B^{0} \to J/ψ p \overline{p}$ and $B^{+} \to J/ψ p \overline{p} π^{+}$ decays, for which the corresponding limits are set: ${\cal{B}}(B^{0} \to J/ψ p \overline{p}) < 5.2 \times 10^{-7}$, which significantly improves the existing limit; and ${\cal{B}}(B^{+} \to J/ψ p \overline{p} π^{+}) < 5.0 \times 10^{-7}$, which is the first limit on this branching fraction.

Shifted one-parameter supersymmetric family of quartic asymmetric double-well potentials

Extending our previous work (Rosu, Mancas, Chen, Ann.Phys. 343 (2014) 87-102), we define supersymmetric partner potentials through a particular Riccati solution of the form F(x)=(x-c)^2-1, where c is a real shift parameter, and work out the quartic double-well family of one-parameter isospectral potentials obtained by using the corresponding general Riccati solution. For these parametric double well potentials, we study how the localization properties of the two wells depend on the parameter of the potentials for various values of the shifting parameter. We also consider the supersymmetric parametric family of the first double-well potential in the Razavy chain of double well potentials corresponding to F(x)=(1/2)sinh 2x-2(1+sqrt 2)sinh 2x/[(1+sqrt 2) cosh 2x+1], both unshifted and shifted, to test and compare the localization properties

Study of B^0 -> rho^0 rho^0 decays, implications for the CKM angle phi_2 and search for other B^0 decay modes with a four-pion final state

We present a study of the branching fraction of the decay B^0->rho0rho0 and the fraction of longitudinally polarized rho0 mesons in this decay. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We find 166 +- 59 B^0 -> rho0 rho0 events (including systematic uncertainties), corresponding to a branching fraction of B(B^0->rho0rho0) = (1.02 +- 0.30 (stat) +- 0.15 (syst)) x 10^{-6} with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations and a longitudinal polarization fraction fL = 0.21^{+0.18}_{-0.22} (stat) +- 0.15 (syst). We use the longitudinal polarization fraction to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix angle phi_2 = (84.9 +- 13.5) degrees through an isospin analysis in the B->rhorho system. We furthermore find 149 +- 49 B^0->f0rho0 events, corresponding to B(B^0->f0rho0) x B(f0->pi+pi-) = (0.78 +- 0.22 (stat) +- 0.11 (syst)) x 10^{-6}, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations. We find no other significant contribution with the same final state, and set upper limits at 90% confidence level on the (product) branching fractions, B(B^0->pi+pi-pi+pi-)<11.2 x 10^{-6}, B(B^0->rho0pi+pi-)<12.0 x 10^{-6}, B(B^0->f0pi+pi-) x B(f0->pi+pi-) <3.0 x 10^{-6} and B(B^0->f0f0) x B(f0->pi+pi-)^{2} < 0.2 x 10^{-6}.

Tuning perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the MgO/CoFeB/Ta thin films

Understanding the magnetic anisotropy at ferromagnetic metal/oxide interface is a fundamental and intriguing subject. Here we propose an approach to manipulate the strength of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) by varying MgO thickness in the MgO/CoFeB/Ta thin films. We identify that the PMA at the MgO/CoFeB interface is tuned by the crystalline structure of bulk MgO layer and decreases dramatically due to the onset of crystalline MgO forming with the increase of MgO thickness. Our work opens an avenue to manipulate the magnetic anisotropy by the modification of the ferromagnetic metal/oxide interface.

A transformative superconducting magnet technology for fields well above 30 T using isotropic round wire multifilament Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-x conductor

We report here that magnetic fields of almost 34 T, far above the upper 24 T limit of Nb3Sn, can be generated using a multifilament round wire conductor made of the high temperature cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-x (Bi-2212). A remarkable attribute of this Bi-2212 conductor is that it does not exhibit macroscopic texture and contains many high angle grain boundaries but nevertheless attains very high superconducting critical current densities Jc of 2500 A/mm2 at 20 T and 4.2 K. This Bi-2212 conductor does not possess the extreme texture that high Jc coated conductors of REBa2Cu3O7-x (REBCO) require, avoiding also its high aspect ratio, large superconducting anisotropy and the inherent sensitivity to defects of a single filament conductor. Bi-2212 wires can be wound or cabled into almost any type of superconducting magnet and will be especially valuable for very high field NMR magnets beyond the present 1 GHz proton resonance limit of Nb3Sn technology. This demonstration that grain boundary limits to high Jc can be practically overcome suggests the huge value of a renewed focus on grain boundary properties in non-ideal geometries, especially with the goal of translating the lessons of this Bi-2212 conductor into fabrication of multifilament round wire REBCO or Fe-based superconductors.

Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of Bs->J/ψK+K-

An amplitude analysis of the final state structure in the Bs->J/ψK+K- decay mode is performed using 1.0/fb of data collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 TeV center-of-mass energy pp collisions produced by the LHC. A modified Dalitz plot analysis of the final state is performed using both the invariant mass spectra and the decay angular distributions. Resonant structures are observed in the K+K- mass spectrum as well as a significant non-resonant S-wave contribution. The largest resonant component is the ϕ(1020), accompanied by f0(980), f'2(1525), and four additional resonances. The overall branching fraction is measured to be B(Bs->J/ψK+K-)=(7.70 +/-0.08 +/- 0.39 +/- 0.60)x 10^(-4), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the ratio of the number of Bs to B- mesons produced. The mass and width of the f'2(1525) are measured to be 1522.2 +/- 2.8^{+5.3}_{-2.0} MeV and 84 +/- 6^{+10}_{-5} MeV, respectively. The final state fractions of the other resonant states are also reported.

Analysis of the resonant components in B0->J/ψpi+pi-

Interpretation of CP violation measurements using charmonium decays, in both the B0 and Bs systems, can be subject to changes due to "penguin" type diagrams. These effects can be investigated using measurements of the Cabibbo-suppressed B0->J/ψpi+pi- decays. The final state composition of this channel is investigated using a 1.0/fb sample of data produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC and collected by the LHCb experiment. A modified Dalitz plot analysis is performed using both the invariant mass spectra and the decay angular distributions. An improved measurement of the B0->J/ψpi+pi- branching fraction of (3.97 +/-0.09+/- 0.11 +/- 0.16)x10^{-5} is reported where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty of the branching fraction of the decay B- -> J/ψK- used as a normalization channel. In the J/ψpi+pi- final state significant production of f0(500) and rho(770) resonances is found, both of which can be used for CP violation studies. In contrast evidence for the f0(980) resonance is not found, thus establishing the first upper limit on the branching fraction product B(B0->J/ψf0(980) x B(f0(980)-> pi+ pi-) < 1.1x10^{-6}, leading to an upper limit on the absolute value of the mixing angle of the f0(980)$ with the f0(500) of <31 degrees, both at 90% confidence level.

We perform a partial wave analysis to distinguish among scalar [$B^0 \to ϕ(Kπ)^{*}_{0}$], vector [$B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}$] and tensor [$B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}$] components, and determine the corresponding branching fractions to be $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕ(Kπ)^{*}_{0}] = (4.3 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}] = (10.4 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}] = (5.5 ^{+0.9}_{-0.7} \pm 1.0) \times 10^{-6}$. We also measure the longitudinal polarization fraction $f_L$ in $B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}$ and $B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}$ decays to be $0.499 \pm 0.030 \pm 0.018$ and $0.918 ^{+0.029}_{-0.060} \pm 0.012$, respectively. The first quoted uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The ratio of branching fractions and the direct {\it CP} asymmetries are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 K^+)/\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 π^+) = 0.064 \pm 0.009\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.004\textrm{(syst.)}$, $\mathcal{A}^{\it CP}(B^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 π^+) = -0.022 \pm 0.025\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.010\textrm{(syst.)}$ and $\mathcal{A}^{\it CP}(B^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 K^+) = -0.21 \pm 0.14\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.01\textrm{(syst.)}$. The data correspond to 1.0 fb-1 of pp collisions collected by the LHCb detector. The only alternative assignment allowed by previous measurements, JPC=2-+, is rejected with a confidence level equivalent to more than eight Gaussian standard deviations using the likelihood-ratio test in the full angular phase space. The differential branching fraction is determined in bins of $q^{2}$, the invariant dimuon mass squared. The $J/ψ$ photoproduction cross-section has been measured as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy. The results are consistent with measurements obtained at HERA and confirm a similar power law behaviour for the photoproduction cross-section.

Experimental constraints on the spin and parity of the Z(4430)+

We perform a full amplitude analysis of B0 -> psi' K+ pi- decays, with psi' -> mu+ mu- or e+ e-, to constrain the spin and parity of the Z(4430)-. The J^P=1+ hypothesis is favored over the 0-, 1-, 2- and 2+ hypotheses at the levels of 3.4 sigma, 3.7 sigma, 4.7 sigma and 5.1 sigma, respectively. The analysis is based on a 711 fb^-1 data sample that contains 772x10^6 B B pairs, collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider KEKB.

First evidence for the annihilation decay mode $B^{+} \to D_{s}^{+} ϕ$

Evidence for the hadronic annihilation decay mode $B^{+} \to D_s^{+}ϕ$ is found with greater than $3σ$ significance. The branching fraction and \CP asymmetry are measured to be \mathcal{B}(B^{+} \to D_s^{+}ϕ) &=& (1.87^{+1.25}_{-0.73}({\rm stat}) \pm 0.19 ({\rm syst}) \pm 0.32 ({\rm norm})) \times 10^{-6}, \mathcal{A}_{CP}(B^{+} \to D_s^{+}ϕ) &=& -0.01 \pm 0.41 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.03 ({\rm syst}). The last uncertainty on $\mathcal{B}(B^{+} \to D_s^{+}ϕ)$ is from the branching fractions of the $B^+ \to D_s^+ \kern 0.2em\bar{\kern -0.2em D}{}^0$ normalization mode and intermediate resonance decays. Upper limits are also set for the branching fractions of the related decay modes $B^{+}_{(c)} \to D^{+}_{(s)} K^{*0}$, $B^{+}_{(c)} \to D^{+}_{(s)} \kern 0.2em\bar{\kern -0.2em K}{}^{*0}$ and ${B_c^{+} \to D^{+}_{s}ϕ}$, including the result ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to D^+ K^{*0})} < 1.8 \times 10^{-6}$ at the 90% credibility level.

First evidence for the two-body charmless baryonic decay $B^0 \to p \bar{p}$

The results of a search for the rare two-body charmless baryonic decays $B^0 \to p \bar{p}$ and $B_s^0 \to p \bar{p}$ are reported. The analysis uses a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.9 fb$^{-1}$, of $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. An excess of $B^0 \to p \bar{p}$ candidates with respect to background expectations is seen with a statistical significance of 3.3 standard deviations. This is the first evidence for a two-body charmless baryonic $B^0$ decay. No significant $B_s^0 \to p \bar{p}$ signal is observed, leading to an improvement of three orders of magnitude over previous bounds. If the excess events are interpreted as signal, the 68.3% confidence level intervals on the branching fractions are {eqnarray} \cal{B}(B^0 \to p \bar{p}) & = & (1.47 \,^{+0.62}_{-0.51} \,^{+0.35}_{-0.14}) \times 10^{-8} \,, *{0.3cm} \cal{B}(B_s^0 \to p \bar{p}) & = & (2.84 \,^{+2.03}_{-1.68} \,^{+0.85}_{-0.18}) \times 10^{-8} \,, {eqnarray} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

First measurement of the CP-violating phase in $B_s^0 \to ϕϕ$ decays

A first flavour-tagged measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in $B_s^0 \to ϕϕ$ decays is presented. In this decay channel, the CP-violating weak phase arises due to CP violation in the interference between $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ mixing and the $b \to s \bar{s} s $ gluonic penguin decay amplitude. Using a sample of $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\; fb^{-1}$ and collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $7 \rm TeV$ with the LHCb detector, $880\ \B_s^0 \to ϕϕ$ signal decays are obtained. The CP-violating phase is measured to be in the interval [-2.46, -0.76] \rm rad$ at 68% confidence level. The p-value of the Standard Model prediction is 16%.

First observation of B0->J/ψK+K- and search for B0->J/ψϕ decays

The first observation of the B0->J/ψK+K- decay is presented with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0/fb of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV collected with the LHCb detector. The branching fraction is measured to be B(B0->J/ψK+K-) = (2.53 +/- 0.31 +/- 0.19)x10^{-6}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Evidence of the a0(980) resonance is reported with statistical significance of 3.9 standard deviations. The corresponding product branching fraction is measured to be B(B0->J/ψa0(980), a0(980)->K+K-)=(4.70 +/- 3.31 +/- 0.72)x10^{-7}, yielding an upper limit of B(B0->J/ψa0(980), a0(980)->K+K-)<9.0x10^{-7} at 90% confidence level. No evidence of the resonant decay B0->J/ψϕ\; is found, and an upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be B(B0->J/ψϕ)< 1.9x10^{-7} at 90% confidence level.

Properties of the orbitally excited (L=1) $B_s$ states are studied using 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =7$ TeV collected with the LHCb detector. The first observation of the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0$ meson decaying to $B^{*+} K^-$ is reported, and the corresponding branching fraction measured relative to the $B^+ K^-$ decay mode. The signal yield is found to be dominated by $B_s^0 \rightarrow ϕ\bar{K}^{*0}$ decays, and the corresponding branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow ϕ\bar{K}^{*0}) = (1.10 \pm 0.24 (stat) \pm 0.14 (syst) \pm 0.08 (f_d/f_s)) \times 10^{-6}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the ratio of fragmentation fractions $f_d/f_s$ which accounts for the different production rate of $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ mesons. The significance of $B_s^0 \rightarrow ϕ\bar{K}^{*0}$ signal is 6.1 standard deviations. High-statistics study of K^0_S pair production in two-photon collisions

We report a high-statistics measurement of the differential cross section of the process gamma gamma --> K^0_S K^0_S in the range 1.05 GeV <= W <= 4.00 GeV, where W is the center-of-mass energy of the colliding photons, using 972 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider operated at and near the Upsilon-resonance region. The differential cross section is fitted by parameterized S-, D_0-, D_2-, G_0- and G_2-wave amplitudes. In the D_2 wave, the f_2(1270), a_2(1320) and f_2'(1525) are dominant and a resonance, the f_2(2200), is also present. The f_0(1710) and possibly the f_0(2500) are seen in the S wave. The mass, total width and product of the two-photon partial decay width and decay branching fraction to the K bar{K} state Gamma_{gamma gamma}B(K bar{K}) are extracted for the f_2'(1525), f_0(1710), f_2(2200) and f_0(2500). The destructive interference between the f_2(1270) and a_2(1320) is confirmed by measuring their relative phase. The parameters of the charmonium states chi_{c0} and chi_{c2} are updated. Possible contributions from the chi_{c0}(2P) and chi_{c2}(2P) states are discussed. A new upper limit for the branching fraction of the P- and CP-violating decay channel eta_c --> K^0_S K^0_S is reported. The detailed behavior of the cross section is updated and compared with QCD-based calculations.

Implications of LHCb measurements and future prospects

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

Limits on neutral Higgs boson production in the forward region in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV

Limits on the cross-section times branching fraction for neutral Higgs bosons, produced in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, and decaying to two tau leptons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, are presented. The result is based on a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector. Candidates are identified by reconstructing final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. A model independent upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on a neutral Higgs boson cross-section times branching fraction. It varies from 8.6 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 0.7 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 250 GeV, and is compared to the Standard Model expectation. An upper limit on $\tanβ$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model is set in the $m_{h^0}^\mathrm{max}$ scenario. It ranges from 34 for a CP-odd Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 70 for a pseudo-scalar Higgs boson mass of 140 GeV.

Localized excited charge carriers generate ultrafast inhomogeneous strain in the multiferroic BiFeO$_3$

We apply ultrafast X-ray diffraction with femtosecond temporal resolution to monitor the lattice dynamics in a thin film of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ after above-bandgap photoexcitation. The sound-velocity limited evolution of the observed lattice strains indicates a quasi-instantaneous photoinduced stress which decays on a nanosecond time scale. This stress exhibits an inhomogeneous spatial profile evidenced by the broadening of the Bragg peak. These new data require substantial modification of existing models of photogenerated stresses in BiFeO$_3$: the relevant excited charge carriers must remain localized to be consistent with the data.

Measurement of Branching Fraction and First Evidence of CP Violation in B0 --> a1+-(1260) pi-+ Decays

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent CP violation parameters in B0 --> a_1^+-(1260) pi^-+ decays. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772x10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We also measure an upper limit on the product branching fraction for a possible decay with the same final state B0 --> a_2^+-(1320) pi^-+. In a time-dependent measurement to extract CP asymmetries, we find evidence of mixing-induced CP violation in B0 --> a_1^+-(1260) pi^-+ decays with a 3.1 sigma significance and the rate where the a_1^+-(1260) does not contain the spectator quark is found to dominate the rate where it does at the 4.1 sigma level. Measurement of CP violation and the B_s^0 meson decay width difference with B_s^0\to J/ψK^+ K^- and B_s^0\to J/ψπ^+π^- decays

The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays is measured using $pp$ collision data at \sqrt{s}=7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1, collected with the LHCb detector. The decay time distribution is characterised by the decay widths Γ_L and Γ_H of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_s^0--\bar{B}_s^0 system and by a CP-violating phase ϕ_s. In a sample of 27\,617 B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays, where the dominant contribution comes from B_s^0\to J/ψϕ decays, these parameters are measured to be ϕ_s = 0.07 \pm 0.09 (stat) \pm 0.01 (syst) rad, Γ_s \equiv (Γ_L+Γ_H)/2 = 0.663 \pm 0.005 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) ps^-1, ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_L -Γ_H = 0.100 \pm 0.016 (stat) \pm 0.003 (syst) & ps^-1, corresponding to the single most precise determination of ϕ_s, ΔΓ_s and Γ_s. The significance of $A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}K^+K^-)$ exceeds three standard deviations and is the first evidence of an inclusive $C\!P$ asymmetry in charmless three-body $B$ decays. For the first time, signals are observed in the modes $Υ(1S) \to \ks K^+ π^- + {\rm c.c.}$, $π^+ π^- π^0 π^0$, and $Υ(2S) \to π^+ π^- π^0 π^0$, and evidence is found for the modes $Υ(1S)\to π^+ π^- π^0$, $K^{\ast}(892)^0 \bar{K}^0+ {\rm c.c.}$, and $Υ(2S) \to \ks K^+ π^- + {\rm c.c.}$ Branching fractions are measured for all the processes, while 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions are also set for the modes with a statistical significance of less than $3σ$. The ratios of the branching fractions of $Υ(2S)$ and $Υ(1S)$ decays into the same final state are used to test a perturbative QCD prediction for OZI-suppressed bottomonium decays.

Measurement of form-factor independent observables in the decay $B^{0} \to K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$

We present a measurement of form-factor independent angular observables in the decay \mbox{$B^0\to K^{*}(892)^{0}μ^+ μ^-$}. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7TeV. Four observables are measured in six bins of the dimuon invariant mass squared, $q^2$, in the range $0.1<q^2<19.0$GeV$^{2}$/c$^{4}$. Agreement with Standard Model predictions is found for 23 of the 24 measurements. A local discrepancy, corresponding to $3.7$ Gaussian standard deviations, is observed in one $q^2$ bin for one of the observables. Considering the 24 measurements as independent, the probability to observe such a discrepancy, or larger, in one is $0.5\%$.

Measurement of prompt hadron production ratios in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 0.9 and 7 TeV

The charged-particle production ratios $\bar{p}/p$, $K^-/K^+$, $π^-/π^+$, $(p + \bar{p})/(π^+ + π^-)$, $(K^+ + K^-)/(π^+ + π^-)$ and $(p + \bar{p})/(K^+ + K^-)$ are measured with the LHCb detector using $0.3 {\rm nb^{-1}}$ of $pp$ collisions delivered by the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$ TeV and $1.8 {\rm nb^{-1}}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. The measurements are performed as a function of transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ and pseudorapidity $η$. The production ratios are compared to the predictions of several Monte Carlo generator settings, none of which are able to describe adequately all observables. The ratio $\bar{p}/p$ is also considered as a function of rapidity loss, $Δy \equiv y_{\rm beam} - y$, and is used to constrain models of baryon transport.

Measurement of the $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0}e^+e^-$ branching fraction at low dilepton mass

The branching fraction of the rate decay $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0}e^+e^-$ in the dilepton mass region from 30 to 1000 MeV$/c^2$ has been measured by the LHCb experiment, using $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The decay mode $B^0 \rightarrow J/ψ(e^+e^-) K^{*0}$ is utilized as a normalization channel. The branching fraction $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0}e^+e^-$ is measured to be $$ B(B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0}e^+e^-)^{30-1000 MeV/c^2}= (3.1\, ^{+0.9\mbox{} +0.2}_{-0.8\mbox{}-0.3} \pm 0.2)\times 10^{-7}, $$ where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third comes from the uncertainties on the B^0 \rightarrow J/ψK^{*0}$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow e^+e^- $ branching fractions.

Measurement of the $B^0_s \to μ^+ μ^-$ branching fraction and search for $B^0 \to μ^+ μ^-$ decays at the LHCb experiment

A search for the rare decays $B^0_s \toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0 \toμ^+μ^-$ is performed at the LHCb experiment. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 2 fb$^{-1}$ at 8 TeV. An excess of $B^0_s \toμ^+μ^-$ signal candidates with respect to the background expectation is seen with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations. A time-integrated branching fraction of ${\cal B}(B^0_s \toμ^+μ^-) = (2.9^{+1.1}_{-1.0})\times 10^{-9}$ is obtained and an upper limit of ${\cal B}(B^0 \toμ^+μ^-) < 7.4\times 10^{-10}$ at 95% confidence level is set. These results are consistent with the Standard Model expectations.

Measurement of the $C¶$ asymmetry in $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ μ^+ μ^-$ decays

A measurement of the $C¶$ asymmetry in $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ μ^+ μ^-$ decays is presented using $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0${\,fb}^{-1}$, recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The measurement is performed in seven bins of $μ^+ μ^-$ invariant mass squared in the range ${0.05<q^{2}<22.00{\mathrm{GeV^2/}c^4}}$, excluding the ${J/ψ}$ and $ψ{(2S)}$ resonance regions. Production and detection asymmetries are corrected for using the $B^+ \rightarrow J/ψK^+$ decay as a control mode. Averaged over all the bins, the $C¶$ asymmetry is found to be ${{\cal A}_{C¶} = 0.000\pm 0.033{(stat.)} \pm0.005 {(syst.)} \pm 0.007{}(J/ψK^+)}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the $C¶$ asymmetry of the control mode. This is consistent with the Standard Model prediction.

Measurement of the CKM angle gamma from a combination of B->Dh analyses

A combination of three LHCb measurements of the CKM angle gamma is presented. All measurements use a dataset corresponding to 1.0 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. Combining results from B->DK decays alone a best-fit value of gamma = 72.0 deg is found, and confidence intervals are set gamma in [56.4,86.7] deg at 68% CL, gamma in [42.6,99.6] deg at 95% CL. The best-fit value of gamma found from a combination of results from B->Dpi decays alone, is gamma = 18.9 deg, and the confidence intervals gamma in [7.4,99.2] deg or [167.9,176.4] deg at 68% CL, are set, without constraint at 95% CL. The combination of results from B->DK and B->Dpi decays gives a best-fit value of gamma = 72.6 deg and the confidence intervals gamma in [55.4,82.3] deg at 68% CL, gamma in [40.2,92.7] deg at 95% CL are set. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Measurement of the differential branching fraction of the decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$

The differential branching fraction of the decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$ is measured as a function of the square of the dimuon invariant mass, $q^2$. A yield of $78\pm12$ $Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$ decays is observed using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0\,fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 7\,TeV. A significant signal is found in the $q^2$ region above the square of the $J/ψ$ mass, while at lower-$q^2$ values upper limits are set on the differential branching fraction. Integrating the differential branching fraction over $q^2$, while excluding the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ regions, gives a branching fraction of $\BF($Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$)=(0.96\pm 0.16\stat\pm 0.13\syst\pm 0.21 (\mathrm{norm}))\times 10^{-6}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the normalisation mode, $$Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/psiΛ$, respectively.

Measurement of the fragmentation fraction ratio $f_{s}/f_{d}$ and its dependence on $B$ meson kinematics

The relative production rate of $B^{0}_{s}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons is determined with the hadronic decays $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{-}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^0 \rightarrow D^{-}K^{+}$. The measurement uses data corresponding to 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV recorded in the forward region with the LHCb experiment. The ratio of production rates, $f_{s}/f_{d}$, is measured to be $0.238 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.021 $, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third theoretical. This is combined with a previous LHCb measurement to obtain $f_{s}/f_{d} = 0.256 \pm 0.020$. The dependence of $f_{s}/f_{d}$ on the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the $B$ meson is determined using the decays $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{-}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$. There is evidence for a decrease with increasing transverse momentum, whereas the ratio remains constant as a function of pseudorapidity. In addition, the ratio of branching fractions of the decays $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}K^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$ is measured to be $0.0822 \pm 0.0011 (\textrm{stat}) \pm 0.0025 (\textrm{syst})$.

Measurements of Branching Fractions and Direct CP Asymmetries for B -> K pi, B->pi pi and B->to KK Decays

We set a 90% confidence-level upper limit for K^+- K^-+ at 2.0x10^{-7}; all other decays are observed with branching fractions ranging from 10^{-6} to 10^{-5}. In the $B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ mode, we confirm Belle's previously reported large A_{CP} with a value of -0.069 +- 0.014 +- 0.007 and a significance of 4.4 sigma. For all other flavor-specific modes, we find A_{CP} values consistent with zero, including A_{CP}(K^+- π^0) = +0.043 +- 0.024 +- 0.007 with 1.8 sigma significance. The difference of CP asymmetry between B^+- -> K^+- pi^0 and B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ is found to be Delta A_{K pi} equiv A_{CP} (K^+ pi^0) - A_{CP}(K^+ pi^-) = +0.112 +- 0.027 +- 0.007 with 4.0 sigma significance. The search is carried out with a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1 collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV. For the K-K+pi-pi+ final state, the four-body phase space is divided into 32 bins, each bin with approximately 1800 decays. The p-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 9.1%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 6.5% observed. The phase space of the pi-pi+pi+pi- final state is partitioned into 128 bins, each bin with approximately 2500 decays. The $p$-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 41%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 5.5% observed. All results are consistent with the hypothesis of no CP violation at the current sensitivity.

The first observation of the decay $B^0_s\rightarrowχ_{c1}ϕ$ and a study of $B^0\rightarrowχ_{c1,2}K^{*0}$ decays are presented. The analysis is performed using a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Observation of a resonance in $B^+ \to K^+ μ^+μ^-$ decays at low recoil

A broad peaking structure is observed in the dimuon spectrum of $B^+ \to K^+ μ^+μ^-$ decays in the kinematic region where the kaon has a low recoil against the dimuon system. The structure is consistent with interference between the $B^+ \to K^+ μ^+μ^-$ decay and a resonance and has a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations. The mean and width of the resonance are measured to be $4191^{+9}_{-8}\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V/}c^2$ and $65^{+22}_{-16}\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V/}c^2$, respectively, where the uncertainties include statistical and systematic contributions. These measurements are compatible with the properties of the $ψ(4160)$ meson. First observations of both the decay $B^+ \to ψ(4160) K^+$ and the subsequent decay $ψ(4160) \to μ^+μ^-$ are reported. The resonant decay and the interference contribution make up 20\,% of the yield in the low recoil region, which is larger than theoretical estimates.

Observation of D0-D0bar oscillations

We report a measurement of the time-dependent ratio of D0->K+pi- to D0->K-pi+ decay rates in D*+-tagged events using 1.0 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment. We measure the mixing parameters x'2=(-0.9+-1.3)x10^{-4}, y'=(7.2+-2.4)x10^{-3} and the ratio of doubly-Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored decay rates R_D=(3.52+-0.15)x10^{-3}, where the uncertainties include statistical and systematic sources. The result excludes the no-mixing hypothesis with a probability corresponding to 9.1 standard deviations and represents the first observation of D0-D0bar oscillations from a single measurement.

Pathways-driven Sparse Regression Identifies Pathways and Genes Associated with High-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol in Two Asian Cohorts

Standard approaches to analysing data in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) ignore any potential functional relationships between genetic markers. In contrast gene pathways analysis uses prior information on functional structure within the genome to identify pathways associated with a trait of interest. In a second step, important single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or genes may be identified within associated pathways. Most pathways methods begin by testing SNPs one at a time, and so fail to capitalise on the potential advantages inherent in a multi-SNP, joint modelling approach. Here we describe a dual-level, sparse regression model for the simultaneous identification of pathways, genes and SNPs associated with a quantitative trait. Our method takes account of various factors specific to the joint modelling of pathways with genome-wide data, including widespread correlation between genetic predictors, and the fact that variants may overlap multiple pathways. We use a resampling strategy that exploits finite sample variability to provide robust rankings for pathways, SNPs and genes. We test our method through simulation, and use it to perform pathways-driven SNP selection in a search for pathways, genes and SNPs associated with variation in serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) levels in two separate GWAS cohorts of Asian adults. By comparing results from both cohorts we identify a number of candidate pathways including those associated with cardiomyopathy, and T cell receptor and PPAR signalling. Highlighted genes include those associated with the L-type calcium channel, adenylate cyclase, integrin, laminin, MAPK signalling and immune function.

Power-law Temperature Dependent Hall Angle in the Normal State and its Correlation with Superconductivity in iron-pnictides

We report Hall measurement of the normal state in K- and Co-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$, as well NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As. We found that a power-law temperature dependence of Hall angle, cot$θ_{\rm H}$$\propto$ $T^β$, prevails in normal state with temperature range well above the structural, spin-density-wave and superconducting transitions for the all samples with various doping levels. The power $β$ is nearly 4 for the parent compounds and the heavily underdoped samples, while around 3 for the superconducting samples. The $β$ suddenly changes from 4 to 3 at a doping level that is close to the emergence of superconductivity. It suggests that the $β$ of $\sim 3$ is clearly tied to the superconductivity. Our data suggest that, similar to cuprates, there exists a connection between the physics in the normal state and superconductivity of iron-pnictides. These findings shed light on the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity.

Precise measurement of the branching fractions for Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- and first measurement of the Ds*+ Ds*- polarization using e+e- collisions

We have made a precise measurement of the absolute branching fractions of Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- decays using 121.4 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The results are B(Bs0->Ds+ Ds-) = (0.58 +0.11 -0.09 +-0.13)%, B(Bs0->Ds*+- Ds-+) = (1.8 +-0.2 +-0.4)%, and B(Bs0->Ds*+ Ds*-) = (2.0 +-0.3 +-0.5)%; the sum is B(Bs0->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- = (4.3 +-0.4 +-1.0)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction constrains the ratio Delta(Gamma_s)/cos(phi_s), where Delta(Gamma_s) is the difference in widths between the two Bs0-Bs0bar mass eigenstates, and phi_s is the CP-violating phase in Bs0-Bs0bar mixing. For phi_s=0 we obtain Delta(Gamma_s)/Gamma_s = 0.090 +-0.009 (stat.) +-0.023 (syst.), where Gamma_s is the mean decay width. We also measure for the first time the longitudinal polarization fraction of Bs->Ds*+ Ds*-; the result is 0.12 +0.30 -0.28 +0.04 -0.05.

Precision measurement of the $B^{0}_{s}$-$\bar{B}^{0}_{s}$ oscillation frequency with the decay $B^{0}_{s}\rightarrowD^{-}_{s}π^{+}$

A key ingredient to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model in $B^{0}_{s}$ mixing phenomena is the measurement of the $B^{0}_{s}$-$\bar{B}^{0}_{s}$ oscillation frequency, which is equivalent to the mass difference $Δm_{s}$ of the $B^{0}_{s}$ mass eigenstates. Precision measurement of the Lambda_b baryon lifetime

The ratio of the Λb baryon lifetime to that of the B0 meson is measured using 1.0/fb of integrated luminosity in 7 TeV center-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC. The Λb baryon is observed for the first time in the decay mode Λb -> J/ψpK-, while the B0 meson decay used is the well known B0 -> J/ψpi+K- mode, where the pi+ K- mass is consistent with that of the K*0(892) meson. The ratio of lifetimes is measured to be 0.976 +/- 0.012 +/- 0.006, in agreement with theoretical expectations based on the heavy quark expansion. In addition, limits are set in the context of a supersymmetric model which allows for the $B^0_{(s)}$ meson to decay into a scalar ($S$) and pseudoscalar particle ($P$), where $S$ and $P$ have masses of 2.5 GeV and 214.3 MeV, respectively, both resonances decay into $μ^+μ^-$. Search for the decay Bs -> D*-+ π+-

A search for the decay Bs -> D*-+ π+- is presented using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1 of pp collisions collected by LHCb. This decay is expected to be mediated by a W-exchange diagram, with little contribution from rescattering processes, and therefore a measurement of the branching fraction will help to understand the mechanism behind related decays such as Bs -> π+ π- and Bs -> D Dbar. Systematic uncertainties are minimised by using B0 -> D*-+ π+- as a normalisation channel. We find no evidence for a signal, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of BR(Bs -> D*-+ π+-) < 6.1 (7.8) x10^(-6) at 90% (95%) confidence level.

Search for the lepton-flavour violating decays $B^0_s \rightarrow e^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$ and $B^0 \rightarrow e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$

A search for the lepton-flavour violating decays $B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ and $B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ is performed with a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. The observed number of $B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ and $B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ candidates is consistent with background expectations. Upper limits on the branching fractions of both decays are determined to be $BR(B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) < 1.1 \,(1.4) \times 10^{-8}$ and $BR (B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) < 2.8 \,(3.7) \times 10^{-9}$ at 90% (95%) confidence level (C.L.). These limits are a factor of twenty lower than those set by previous experiments. Lower bounds on the Pati-Salam leptoquark masses are also calculated, $M_{\rm LQ} (B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) > 107$ TeV/c$^2$ and $M_{\rm LQ} (B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) > 126$ TeV/c$^2$ at 95% C.L., and are a factor of two higher than the previous bounds.

Searches for violation of lepton flavour and baryon number in tau lepton decays at LHCb

Searches for the lepton flavour violating decay $τ^-\rightarrow μ^-μ^+μ^-$ and the lepton flavour and baryon number violating decays $τ^-\rightarrow \bar{p}μ^+μ^-$ and $τ^-\rightarrow pμ^-μ^-$ have been carried out using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, taken by the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. No evidence has been found for any signal, and limits have been set at 90% confidence level on the branching fractions: $\cal B(τ^-\rightarrow μ^-μ^+μ^-) < 8.0 \times 10^{-8}$, $\cal B(τ^-\rightarrow \bar{p}μ^+μ^-) < 3.3 \times 10^{-7}$ and $\cal B(τ^-\rightarrow pμ^-μ^-) < 4.4 \times 10^{-7}$. Studies of the decays $B^+ \to p \bar p h^+$ and observation of $B^+ \to \kern 0.1em\bar{\kern -0.1emΛ}(1520)p$

Dynamics and direct $C¶$ violation in three-body charmless decays of charged $B$ mesons to a proton, an antiproton and a light meson (pion or kaon) are studied using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0$ {\,fb}^{-1}$, collected by the ${LHCb}$ experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Production spectra are determined as a function of Dalitz-plot and helicity variables. The forward-backward asymmetry of the light meson in the $p\bar p$ rest frame is measured. No significant $C¶$ asymmetry in $B^+ \to p \bar p K^+$ decay is found in any region of the Dalitz plane. We present the first observation of the decay $B^+ \to \kern 0.1em\bar{\kern -0.1emΛ}(1520)(\to K^+\bar p)p$ near the $K^+\bar p$ threshold and measure $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \kern 0.1em\bar{\kern -0.1emΛ}(1520)p)=(3.9^{+1.0}_{-0.9} (\mathrm{stat})\pm0.1 (\mathrm{syst})\pm0.3 (\mathrm{BF}))\times 10^{-7}$, where BF denotes the uncertainty on secondary branching fractions.

A search for charmless three-body decays of $B^0$ and $B_{s}^0$ mesons with a $K_{\rm S}^0$ meson in the final state is performed using the $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $7\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. Branching fractions of the $B_{(s)}^0 \to K_{\rm S}^0 h^{+} h^{\prime -}$ decay modes ($h^{(\prime)} = π, K$), relative to the well measured $B^0 \to K_{\rm S}^0 π^{+} π^{-}$ decay, are obtained. In addition, two natural parity and two unnatural parity resonances are observed in the mass region between 2500 and 2800 MeV. Study of $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ and Observation of a Charged Charmonium-like State at Belle

The cross section for $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ between 3.8 GeV and 5.5 GeV is measured with a 967 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at or near the $Υ(nS)$ ($n = 1,\ 2,\ ...,\ 5$) resonances. The Y(4260) state is observed, and its resonance parameters are determined. In addition, an excess of $π^+ π^- J/ψ$ production around 4 GeV is observed. This feature can be described by a Breit-Wigner parameterization with properties that are consistent with the Y(4008) state that was previously reported by Belle. In a study of $Y(4260) \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ decays, a structure is observed in the $M(π^\pm\jpsi)$ mass spectrum with $5.2σ$ significance, with mass $M=(3894.5\pm 6.6\pm 4.5) {\rm MeV}/c^2$ and width $Γ=(63\pm 24\pm 26)$ MeV/$c^{2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. This structure can be interpreted as a new charged charmonium-like state.

Study of B0 -> D*- pi+ pi- pi+ and B0 -> D*- K+ pi- pi+ decays

Using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^{-1}, the ratio of branching fractions of the B0 -> D*- pi+ pi- pi+ decay relative to the B0 -> D*- pi+ decay is measured to be B(B0 -> D*- pi+ pi- pi+) / B(B0 -> D*- pi+) = 2.64 \pm 0.04 (stat.) \pm 0.13 (syst.). The Cabibbo-suppressed decay B0 -> D*- K+ pi- pi+ is observed for the first time and the measured ratio of branching fractions is B(B0 -> D*- K+ pi- pi+) / B(B0 -> D*- pi+ pi- pi+) = (6.47 \pm 0.37 (stat.) \pm 0.35 (syst.)) x 10^{-2}. A search for orbital excitations of charm mesons contributing to the B0 -> D*- pi+ pi- pi+ final state is also performed, and the first observation of the B0 -> Dbar_{1}(2420)^0 pi+ pi- decay is reported with the ratio of branching fractions B(B0 -> (Dbar_{1}(2420)^0 -> D*- pi+) pi- pi+) / B(B0 -> D*- pi+ pi- pi+) = (2.04 \pm 0.42 (stat.) \pm 0.22 (syst.)) x 10^{-2}, where the numerator represents a product of the branching fractions B(B0 -> Dbar_{1}(2420)^0 pi- pi+) and B(Dbar_{1}(2420)^0 -> D*- pi+).

Study of Exclusive B->X_u l nu Decays and Extraction of |V_{ub}| using Full Reconstruction Tagging at the Belle Experiment

We report the results of a study of the exclusive semileptonic decays B->pi0lnu, B->pi+lnu, B->rho0lnu, B->rho+lnu and B->omegalnu, where l represents an electron or a muon. The events are tagged by fully reconstructing a second B meson in the event in a hadronic decay mode. The measured branching fractions are Br(B->pi0lnu) = (0.80 +- 0.08 +- 0.04)x10^-4, Br(B->pi+lnu) = (1.49 +- 0.09 +- 0.07)x10^-4, Br(B->rho0lnu) = (1.83 +- 0.10 +- 0.10)x10^-4, Br(B->rho+lnu) = (3.22 +- 0.27 +- 0.24)x10^-4, and Br(B->omegalnu) =(1.07 +- 0.16 +- 0.07)x10^-4, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. The obtained branching fractions are inclusive of soft photon emission. We also determine the branching fractions as a function of the 4-momentum transfer squared to the leptonic system q^2=(p_l+p_nu)^2, where p_l and p_nu are the lepton and neutrino 4-momenta, respectively. Using the pion modes, a recent LCSR calculation, lattice QCD results and a model-independent description of the hadronic form factor, a value of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}| = (3.52 +- 0.29)x10^-3 is extracted. For the first time, a charmless state with invariant mass greater than 1 GeV/c^2, which might be dominated by the decay B->f2lnu, is observed. These results are obtained from a 711 1/fb data sample that contains 772 millions BB pairs, collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider.

A model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of $B^\pm \to D K^\pm$ with $D \to K^0_{\rm S} h^+h^-$ ($h=π, K$) decays and constraints on the CKM angle $γ$

A binned Dalitz plot analysis of $B^\pm \to D K^\pm$ decays, with $D \to K^0_{\rm S} π^+π^-$ and $D \to K^0_{\rm S} K^+ K^-$, is performed to measure the CP-violating observables $x_{\pm}$ and $y_{\pm}$ which are sensitive to the CKM angle $γ$. The analysis exploits 1.0 $\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb experiment. The study makes no model-based assumption on the variation of the strong phase of the D decay amplitude over the Dalitz plot, but uses measurements of this quantity from CLEO-c as input. The values of the parameters are found to be $x_- = (0.0 \pm 4.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-2}$, $y_- = (2.7 \pm 5.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 2.3) \times 10^{-2}$, $x_+ = (-10.3 \pm 4.5 \pm 1.8 \pm 1.4)\times 10^{-2}$ and $y_+ = (-0.9 \pm 3.7 \pm 0.8 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-2}$. The first, second, and third uncertainties are the statistical, the experimental systematic, and the error associated with the precision of the strong-phase parameters measured at CLEO-c, respectively. These results correspond to $γ= (44^{\,+43}_{\,-38})^\circ$, with a second solution at $γ\to γ+ 180^\circ$, and $r_B = 0.07 \pm 0.04$, where $r_B$ is the ratio between the suppressed and favoured B decay amplitudes.

A next generation Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO-100) for IR/optical observations of the rise phase of gamma-ray bursts

The Swift Gamma-ray Burst (GRB) observatory responds to GRB triggers with optical observations in ~ 100 s, but cannot respond faster than ~ 60 s. While some ground-based telescopes respond quickly, the number of sub-60 s detections remains small. In mid- to late-2013, the Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory-Pathfinder is to be launched on the Lomonosov spacecraft to investigate early optical GRB emission. This pathfinder mission is necessarily limited in sensitivity and event rate; here we discuss a next generation rapid-response space observatory. We list science topics motivating our instruments, those that require rapid optical-IR GRB response, including: A survey of GRB rise shapes/times, measurements of optical bulk Lorentz factors, investigation of magnetic dominated (vs. non-magnetic) jet models, internal vs. external shock origin of prompt optical emission, the use of GRBs for cosmology, and dust evaporation in the GRB environment. We also address the impacts of the characteristics of GRB observing on our instrument and observatory design. We describe our instrument designs and choices for a next generation observatory as a second instrument on a low-earth orbit spacecraft, with a 120 kg instrument mass budget. Restricted to relatively modest mass and power, we find that a coded mask X-ray camera with 1024 cm2 of detector area could rapidly locate about 64 GRB triggers/year. Responding to the locations from the X-ray camera, a 30 cm aperture telescope with a beam-steering system for rapid (~ 1 s) response and a near-IR camera should detect ~ 29 GRB, given Swift GRB properties. Am additional optical camera would give a broadband optical-IR slope, allowing dynamic measurement of dust extinction at the source, for the first time.

A study of the $Z$ production cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV using tau final states

A measurement of the inclusive $Z \to ττ$ cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV is presented based on a dataset of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector. Candidates for $Z \to ττ$ decays are identified through reconstructed final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. The production cross-section for $Z$ bosons, with invariant mass between 60 and 120 GeV/$c^2$, which decay to $τ$ leptons with transverse momenta greater than 20 GeV/$c$ and pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, is measured to be $σ_{pp \to Z \to ττ} = 71.4 \pm 3.5 \pm 2.8 \pm 2.5$ pb; the first uncertainty is statistical, the second uncertainty is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The ratio of the cross-sections for $Z \to ττ$ to $Z \to μμ$ is determined to be $0.93 \pm 0.09$, where the uncertainty is the combination of statistical, systematic, and luminosity uncertainties of the two measurements.

The branching fractions, normalized with respect to $\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+π^-π^+π^-$ and $\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-$, respectively, are measured to be {\br(\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-)\over\br(\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+π^-π^+π^-)} &= (5.2\pm0.5\pm0.3)\times10^{-2}, {\br(\bar{B}^0\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-)\over\br(\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-^π^+π^-)} &= 0.54\pm0.07\pm0.07, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The $\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-$ decay is of particular interest as it can be used to measure the weak phase $γ$. First observation of the $\bar{B}^0_s\to D_{s1}(2536)^+π^-, D_{s1}^+\to D_s^+π^-π^+$ decay is also presented, and its branching fraction relative to $\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+π^-π^+π^-$ is found to be {\br(\bar{B}^0_s\to D_{s1}(2536)^+π^-, D_{s1}^+\to D_s^+π^-π^+)\over\br(\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+π^-π^+π^-)} &= (4.0\pm1.0\pm0.4)\times10^{-3}.

Implications of ultra-high energy neutrino flux constraints for Lorentz-invariance violating cosmogenic neutrinos

We consider the implications of Lorentz-invariance violation (LIV) on cosmogenic neutrino observations, with particular focus on the constraints imposed on several well-developed models for ultra-high energy cosmogenic neutrino production by recent results from the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) long-duration balloon payload, and Radio Ice Cherenkov Experiment (RICE) at the South Pole. Under a scenario proposed originally by Coleman and Glashow, each lepton family may attain maximum velocities that can exceed the speed of light, leading to energy-loss through several interaction channels during propagation. We show that future observations of cosmogenic neutrinos will provide by far the most stringent limit on LIV in the neutrino sector. We derive the implied level of LIV required to suppress observation of predicted fluxes from several mainstream cosmogenic neutrino models, and specifically those recently constrained by the ANITA and RICE experiments. We simulate via detailed Monte Carlo code the propagation of cosmogenic neutrino fluxes in the presence of LIV-induced energy losses. We show that this process produces several detectable effects in the resulting attenuated neutrino spectra, even at LIV-induced neutrino superluminality of (u_ν-c)/c ~ 10^{-26}, about 13 orders of magnitude below current bounds.

Measurement of gamma gamma* --> pi0 transition form factor at Belle

We report a measurement of the process gamma gamma* --> pi0 with a 759 fb^{-1} data sample recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The pion transition form factor, F(Q^2), is measured for the kinematical region 4 GeV^2 <~ Q^2 <~ 40 GeV^2, where -Q^2 is the invariant mass squared of a virtual photon. The measured values of Q^2|F(Q^2)| agree well with the previous measurements below Q^2 ~= 9 GeV^2 but do not exhibit the rapid growth in the higher Q^2 region seen in another recent measurement, which exceeds the asymptotic QCD expectation by as much as 50%.

Measurement of the $B^0_s\rightarrow J/ψK^{*0}$ branching fraction and angular amplitudes

A search for the decay $B^0_s\rightarrow J/ψK^{*0}$ with $K^{*0} \rightarrow K^-π^+$ is performed with 0.37 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment, finding a $\Bs \to JψK^-π^+$ peak of $114 \pm 11$ signal events. The $K^-π^+$ mass spectrum of the candidates in the $B^0_s$ peak is dominated by the $K^{*0}$ contribution. Subtracting the non-resonant $K^-π^+$ component, the branching fraction of \BsJpsiKst is $(4.4_{-0.4}^{+0.5} \pm 0.8) \times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. A fit to the angular distribution of the decay products yields the \Kst polarization fractions $f_L = 0.50 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.02$ and $f_{||} = 0.19^{+0.10}_{-0.08} \pm 0.02$.

Measurement of the Bs effective lifetime in the J/psi f0(980) final state

The effective lifetime of the Bs meson in the decay mode Bs->J/ψf0(980) is measured using 1.0/fb of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. The result is 1.700 +/- 0.040 +/- 0.026 ps where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. As the final state is CP-odd, and CP violation in this mode is measured to be small, the lifetime measurement can be translated into a measurement of the decay width of the heavy Bs mass eigenstate, Γ_H = (0.588 +/- 0.014 +/- 0.009)/ps.

Measurement of the CP-violation Parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ with a New Tagging Method at the $Υ(5S)$ Resonance

We report a measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance using a new tagging method, called "$B$-$π$ tagging." In $Υ(5S)$ decays containing a neutral $B$ meson, a charged $B$, and a charged pion, the neutral $B$ is reconstructed in the $J/ψK_S^0$ CP-eigenstate decay channel. The initial flavor of the neutral $B$ meson at the moment of the $Υ(5S)$ decay is opposite to that of the charged $B$ and may thus be inferred from the charge of the pion without reconstructing the charged $B$. From the asymmetry between $B$-$π^+$ and $B$-$π^-$ tagged $J/ψK_S^0$ yields, we determine sin2$ϕ_1$ = 0.57 $\pm$ 0.58(stat) $\pm$ 0.06(syst). The results are based on 121 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider.

Measurement of the D+/- production asymmetry in 7 TeV pp collisions

The asymmetry in the production cross-section σof D+/- mesons, A_P = (σ(D+) - σ(D-))/(σ(D+) + σ(D-)), is measured in bins of pseudorapidity ηand transverse momentum p_T within the acceptance of the LHCb detector. The result is obtained with a sample of D+ -> K_S pi+ decays corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^-1, collected in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. When integrated over the kinematic range 2.0 < p_T < 18.0 GeV/c and 2.20 < η< 4.75, the production asymmetry is A_P = (-0.96+/-0.26+/-0.18)%. The uncertainties quoted are statistical and systematic, respectively. The result assumes that any direct CP violation in the D+ -> K_S pi+ decay is negligible. No significant dependence on ηor p_T is observed.

Measurement of the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime

A precise determination of the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime can be used to constrain contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model in the $B_s^0$ meson system. Conventional approaches select $B$ meson decay products that are significantly displaced from the $B$ meson production vertex. As a consequence, $B$ mesons with low decay times are suppressed, introducing a bias to the decay time spectrum which must be corrected. This analysis uses a technique that explicitly avoids a lifetime bias by using a neural network based trigger and event selection. Using 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the LHCb experiment, the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime is measured as $1.455 \pm 0.046 \; \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.006 \; \mathrm{(syst.)} \, \mathrm{ps}.$

Measurement of the isospin asymmetry in $B \to K^{(*)}μ^+μ^-$ decays

The isospin asymmetries of $B \to K^{(*)}μ^+μ^-$ decays and the partial branching fractions of $B^0 \to K^0μ^+μ^-$ and $B^+ \to K^{*+}μ^+μ^-$ are measured as a function of the di-muon mass squared $q^2$ using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The $B \to Kμ^+μ^-$ isospin asymmetry integrated over $q^2$ is negative, deviating from zero with over 4 $σ$ significance. The $B \to K^{*}μ^+μ^-$ decay measurements are consistent with the Standard Model prediction of negligible isospin asymmetry. The observation of the decay $B^0 \to K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}μ^+μ^-$ is reported with 5.7 $σ$ significance. Assuming that the branching fraction of $B^0 \to K^0μ^+μ^-$ is twice that of $B^0 \to K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}μ^+μ^-$, the branching fractions of $B^0 \to K^0μ^+μ^-$ and $B \to K^{*+}μ^+μ^-$ are found to be ($0.31^{+0.07}_{-0.06}) \times 10^{-6}$ and ($1.16\pm0.19) \times 10^{-6}$, respectively.

Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) and the direct CP asymmetry in B0 -> K*0 gamma

The ratio of branching fractions of the radiative B decays B0 -> K*0 gamma and Bs0 phi gamma has been measured using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1 of pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The value obtained is BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) = 1.23 +/- 0.06(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.) +/- 0.10(fs/fd), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is associated with the ratio of fragmentation fractions fs/fd. Using the world average value for BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma), the branching fraction BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) is measured to be (3.5 +/- 0.4) x 10^{-5}. The direct CP asymmetry in B0 -> K*0 gamma decays has also been measured with the same data and found to be A(CP)(B0 -> K*0 gamma) = (0.8 +/- 1.7(stat.) +/- 0.9(syst.))%. Both measurements are the most precise to date and are in agreement with the previous experimental results and theoretical expectations.

Observation of ψ(4040) and ψ(4160) decay into ηJ/ψ

The cross section for e^+e^- \to ηJ/ψbetween \sqrt{s}=3.8 GeV/c^2 and 5.3 GeV/c^2 is measured via initial state radiation using 980 fb^{-1} of data on and around the Υ(nS)(n=1,2,3,4,5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. Two resonant structures at the ψ(4040) and ψ(4160) are observed in the ηJ/ψinvariant mass distribution. Fitting the mass spectrum with the coherent sum of two Breit-Wigner functions, one obtains BR(ψ(4040)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4040)} = (4.8\pm0.9\pm1.4) eV and BR(ψ(4160)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4160)} = (4.0\pm0.8\pm1.4) eV for one solution and BR(ψ(4040)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4040)} = (11.2\pm1.3\pm1.9) eV and BR(ψ(4160)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4160)} = (13.8\pm1.3\pm2.0) eV for the other solution, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first measurement of this hadronic transition mode of these two states, and the partial widths to ηJ/ψare found to be about 1 MeV. There is no evidence for the Y(4260), Y(4360), ψ(4415), or Y(4660) in the ηJ/ψfinal state, and upper limits of their production rates in e^+e^- annihilation are determined.

Information Content of Exoplanetary Transit Spectra: An Initial Look

It has been shown that spectroscopy of transiting extrasolar planets can potentially provide a wealth of information about their atmospheres. Herein, we set up the inverse problem in spectroscopic retrieval. We use non-linear optimal estimation to retrieve the atmospheric state (pioneered for Earth sounding by Rodgers 1976, 2000). The formulation quantifies the the degrees-of-freedom and information content of the spectrum with respect to geophysical parameters; herein, we focus specifically on temperature and composition. First, we apply the technique to synthetic near infrared spectra, and explore the influence of spectral signal-to-noise ratio and resolution (the two important parameters when designing a future instrument) on the information content of the data. As expected, we find that the number of retrievable parameters increase with increasing signal-to-noise and resolution, although the gains quickly asymptote for large values. Second, we apply the methods to the previously studied atmosphere of HD198733b, and compare the results of our retrieval with those obtained by others.

In the present glasses, compositional variation of Raman active corner-sharing mode frequency of GeSe$_4$ units, molar volumes, and the enthalpy of relaxation at Tg, reveal the rigidity (xc(1)= 19.5(3)%) and the stress (xc(2) = 26.0(3)%) transitions to be rather sharp (Δx < 0.6%). These abrupt elastic phase transitions are intrinsic to these materials and have a direct bearing on physics of glasses.

Observation of B- to pbar Lambda D0 at Belle

We study B- meson decays to pbar Lambda D(*)0 final states using a sample of 657 * 10^6 B Bbar events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider. The observed branching fraction for B- to pbar Lambda D0 is (1.43^ +0.28_-0.25 +- 0.18)*10^-5. with a significance of 8.1 standard deviations, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Most of the signal events have the pbarLambda mass peaking near threshold. No significant signal is observed for B- to pbar Lambda D*0 and the corresponding upper limit on the branching fraction is 4.8 * 10^-5 at the 90% confidence level.

Observation of transverse polarization asymmetries of charged pion pairs in e+e- annihilation near sqrt s=10.58 GeV

The interference fragmentation function translates the fragmentation of a quark with a transverse projection of the spin into an azimuthal asymmetry of two final-state hadrons. In e+e- annihilation the product of two interference fragmentation functions is measured. We report nonzero asymmetries for pairs of charge-ordered pi+pi- pairs, which indicate a significant interference fragmentation function in this channel. The results are obtained from a 672 fb-1 data sample that contains 711 \times 106 pi+pi- pairs and was collected at and near the ?(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.

On the design of experiments for the study of extreme field limits in the interaction of laser with ultrarelativistic electron beam

We propose the experiments on the collision of laser light and high intensity electromagnetic pulses generated by relativistic flying mirrors, with electron bunches produced by a conventional accelerator and with laser wake field accelerated electrons for studying extreme field limits in the nonlinear interaction of electromagnetic waves. The regimes of dominant radiation reaction, which completely changes the electromagnetic wave-matter interaction, will be revealed in the laser plasma experiments. This will result in a new powerful source of ultra short high brightness gamma-ray pulses. A possibility of the demonstration of the electron-positron pair creation in vacuum in a multi-photon processes can be realized. This will allow modeling under terrestrial laboratory conditions neutron star magnetospheres, cosmological gamma ray bursts and the Leptonic Era of the Universe.

Search for CP Violation in D Meson Decays to phi pi+

We search for CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed charged D meson decays by measuring the difference between the CP violating asymmetries for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays D+ -> K+K-pi+ and the Cabibbo-favored decays Ds -> K+K-pi+ in the K+K- mass region of the phi resonance. Using 955/fb of data collected with the Belle detector we obtain A_CP(D+ -> phi pi+) = (+0.51 +- 0.28 +- 0.05)%. The measurement improves the sensitivity of previous searches by more than a factor of five. We find no evidence for direct CP violation.

Search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays at Belle

We report on a search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays using a data sample of 699 fb^{-1} collected in the Belle experiment at the KEKB electron-positron asymmetric-energy collider. The CP asymmetry is measured in four bins of the invariant mass of the K^0_S pi system and found to be compatible with zero with a precision of O(10^{-3}) in each mass bin. Limits for the CP violation parameter Im(eta_S) are given at a 90 % confidence level. These limits are |Im(eta_S)|<0.026 or better, depending on the parameterization used to describe the hadronic form factors and improve upon previous limits by one order of magnitude.

Study of B^{+-} -> K^{+-}(K_S K pi)^0 Decay and Determination of eta_c and eta_c(2S) Parameters

We report the results of a study of $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c$ and $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c(2S)$ decays followed by $η_c$ and $η_c(2S)$ decays to $(K_SKπ)^0$. The results are obtained from a data sample containing 535 million $B\bar{B}$-meson pairs collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure the products of the branching fractions ${\mathcal B}(B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c){\mathcal B}(η_c\to K_S K^{\pm}π^{\mp})=(26.7\pm 1.4(stat)^{+2.9}_{-2.6}(syst)\pm 4.9(model))\times 10^{-6}$ and ${\mathcal B}(B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c(2S)){\mathcal B}(η_c(2S)\to K_S K^{\pm}π^{\mp})=(3.4^{+2.2}_{-1.5}(stat+model)^{+0.5}_{-0.4} syst))\times 10^{-6}$. Interference with the non-resonant component leads to significant model uncertainty in the measurement of these product branching fractions. Our analysis accounts for this interference and allows the model uncertainty to be reduced. We also obtain the following charmonia masses and widths: $M(η_c)=(2985.4\pm 1.5(stat)^{+0.5}_{-2.0}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ(η_c)=(35.1\pm 3.1(stat)^{+1.0}_{-1.6}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$, $M(η_c(2S))=(3636.1^{+3.9}_{-4.2}(stat+model)^{+0.7}_{-2.0}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ(η_c(2S))=(6.6^{+8.4}_{-5.1}(stat+model)^{+2.6}_{-0.9}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$.

The First Limits on the Ultra-high Energy Neutrino Fluence from Gamma-ray Bursts

We set the first limits on the ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino fluence at energies greater than 10^9 GeV from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) based on data from the second flight of the ANtarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA). During the 31 day flight of ANITA-II, 26 GRBs were recorded by Swift or Fermi. Of these, we analyzed the 12 GRBs which occurred during quiet periods when the payload was away from anthropogenic activity. In a blind analysis, we observe 0 events on a total background of 0.0044 events in the combined prompt window for all 12 low-background bursts. We also observe 0 events from the remaining 14 bursts. We place a 90% confidence level limit on the E^-4 prompt neutrino fluence of 2.5x10^17 GeV^3/cm^2 between 10^8 and 10^12 GeV from GRB090107A. This is the first reported limit on the UHE neutrino fluence from GRBs above 10^9 GeV, and the strongest limit above 10^8 GeV.

The UFFO (Ultra Fast Flash Observatory) Pathfinder: Science and Mission

Hundreds of gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical light curves have been measured since the discovery of optical afterglows. However, even after nearly 7 years of operation of the Swift Observatory, only a handful of measurements have been made soon (within a minute) after the gamma ray signal. This lack of early observations fails to address burst physics at short time scales associated with prompt emissions and progenitors. Because of this lack of sub-minute data, the characteristics of the rise phase of optical light curve of short-hard type GRB and rapid-rising GRB, which may account for ~30% of all GRB, remain practically unknown. We have developed methods for reaching sub-minute and sub-second timescales in a small spacecraft observatory. Rather than slewing the entire spacecraft to aim the optical instrument at the GRB position, we use rapidly moving mirror to redirect our optical beam. As a first step, we employ motorized slewing mirror telescope (SMT), which can point to the event within 1s, in the UFFO Pathfinder GRB Telescope onboard the Lomonosov satellite to be launched in Nov. 2011. UFFO's sub-minute measurements of the optical emission of dozens of GRB each year will result in a more rigorous test of current internal shock models, probe the extremes of bulk Lorentz factors, provide the first early and detailed measurements of fast-rise GRB optical light curves, and help verify the prospect of GRB as a new standard candle. We will describe the science and the mission of the current UFFO Pathfinder project, and our plan of a full-scale UFFO-100 as the next step.

Ultra-Relativistic Magnetic Monopole Search with the ANITA-II Balloon-borne Radio Interferometer

We have conducted a search for extended energy deposition trails left by ultra-relativistic magnetic monopoles interacting in Antarctic ice. The non-observation of any satisfactory candidates in the 31 days of accumulated ANITA-II flight data results in an upper limit on the diffuse flux of relativistic monopoles. We obtain a 90% C.L. limit of order 10^{-19}/(cm^2-s-sr) for values of Lorentz boost factor 10^{10}<gamma at the anticipated energy E=10^{16} GeV. This bound is stronger than all previously published experimental limits for this kinematic range.

Belle II Technical Design Report

The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed. The Technical Design Report presents physics motivation, basic methods of the accelerator upgrade, as well as key improvements of the detector.

Community Structure of the Physical Review Citation Network

We investigate the community structure of physics subfields in the citation network of all Physical Review publications between 1893 and August 2007. We focus on well-cited publications (those receiving more than 100 citations), and apply modularity maximization to uncover major communities that correspond to clearly-identifiable subfields of physics. While most of the links between communities connect those with obvious intellectual overlap, there sometimes exist unexpected connections between disparate fields due to the development of a widely-applicable theoretical technique or by cross fertilization between theory and experiment. We also examine communities decade by decade and also uncover a small number of significant links between communities that are widely separated in time.

Measurement of CP violating asymmetries in B^0 -> K^+K^- K^0_S decays with a time-dependent Dalitz approach

We report a measurement of $CP$ violating asymmetries in $B^0(\overline{B}^0) \to K^+ K^- K^0_S$ decays with a time-dependent Dalitz approach. This analysis is based on a data sample of $657\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs accumulated at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. As the result of an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the selected candidates, the mixing-induced and direct $CP$ violation parameters, $ϕ^{\rm eff}_1$ and ${\cal A}_{CP}$ are obtained for $B^0 \to ϕ(1020) K^0_S$, $B^0 \to f_0(980) K^0_S$ and other $B^0 \to K^+ K^- K^0_S$ decays. We find four solutions that describe the data. There are \{eqnarray*} ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (32.2 \pm 9.0 \pm 2.6 \pm 1.4)^{\circ}; ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (26.2 \pm 8.8 \pm 2.7 \pm 1.2)^{\circ};\\ ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (27.3 \pm 8.6 \pm 2.8 \pm 1.3)^{\circ}\; {\rm and}\\ ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (24.3 \pm 8.0 \pm 2.9 \pm 5.2)^{\circ}.{eqnarray*}\ The values for the $CP$ violating phase in $B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S$ are similar but other properties of the Dalitz plot are quite different for the four solutions. These four solutions have consistent $ϕ^{\rm eff}_1$ values for all three $B$ meson decay channels and none of them deviates significantly from the values measured in $B \to (c\bar{c}) K^0$ decays with the currently available statistics. In addition, we find no significant direct $CP$ violation.

Observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- using e+e- collisions and a determination of the Bs-Bsbar width difference ΔΓ_s

We have made the first observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- decays using 23.6 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The branching fractions are measured to be B(B^0_s\ra D^+_s D^-_s) = (1.0\,^{+0.4}_{-0.3}\,^{+0.3}_{-0.2})%, B(B^0_s\ra D^{*\pm}_s D^{\mp}_s) = (2.8\,^{+0.8}_{-0.7}\,\pm 0.7)%, and B(B^0_s\ra D^{*+}_s D^{*-}_s) = (3.1\,^{+1.2}_{-1.0}\,\pm 0.8)%; the sum is B(B^0_s\ra D^{(*)+}_s D^{(*)-}_s) = (6.9\,^{+1.5}_{-1.3}\,\pm 1.9)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction determines the ratio ΔΓ_s/cos(ϕ), where ΔΓ_s is the difference in widths between the two Bs-Bsbar mass eigenstates, and ϕis a CP-violating weak phase. Taking CP violation to be negligibly small, we obtain ΔΓ_s/Γ_s = 0.147^{+0.036}_{-0.030}(stat.)^{+0.044}_{-0.042}(syst.), where Γ_s is the mean decay width.

Observation of Ultra-high-energy Cosmic Rays with the ANITA Balloon-borne Radio Interferometer

We report the observation of sixteen cosmic ray events of mean energy of 1.5 x 10^{19} eV, via radio pulses originating from the interaction of the cosmic ray air shower with the Antarctic geomagnetic field, a process known as geosynchrotron emission. We present the first ultra-wideband, far-field measurements of the radio spectral density of geosynchrotron emission in the range from 300-1000 MHz. The emission is 100% linearly polarized in the plane perpendicular to the projected geomagnetic field. Fourteen of our observed events are seen to have a phase-inversion due to reflection of the radio beam off the ice surface, and two additional events are seen directly from above the horizon.

Testing Strict Hydrostatic Equilibrium in Simulated Clusters of Galaxies: Implications to Abell 1689

Accurate mass determination of clusters of galaxies is crucial if they are to be used as cosmological probes. However, there are some discrepancies between cluster masses determined based on gravitational lensing, and X-ray observations assuming strict hydrostatic equilibirium (i.e., the equilibrium gas pressure is provided entirely by thermal pressure). Cosmological simulations suggest that turbulent gas motions remaining from hierarchical structure formation may provide a significant contribution to the equilibrium pressure in clusters. We analyze a sample of massive clusters of galaxies drawn from high resolution cosmological simulations, and find a significant contribution (20%-45%) from non-thermal pressure near the center of relaxed clusters, and, in accord with previous studies, a minimum contribution at about 0.1 Rvir, growing to about 30%-45% at the virial radius, Rvir. Our results strongly suggest that relaxed clusters should have significant non-thermal support in their core region. As an example, we test the validity of strict hydrostatic equilibirium in the well-studied massive galaxy cluster Abell 1689 using the latest high resolution gravitational lensing and X-ray observations. We find a contribution of about 40% from non-thermal pressure within the core region of A1689, suggesting an alternate explanation for the mass discrepancy: the strict hydrostatic equilibirium is not valid in this region.

IceRay: An IceCube-centered Radio-Cherenkov GZK Neutrino Detector

Operating in coincidence with the IceCube neutrino detector would allow complete calorimetry of a subset of the events. We also report on the status of a testbed IceRay station which incorporates both ANITA and IceCube technology and will provide year-round monitoring of the radio environment at the South Pole.

Muon Collider Design

Muon Colliders have unique technical and physics advantages and disadvantages when compared with both hadron and electron machines. They should thus be regarded as complementary. Parameters are given of 4 TeV and 0.5 TeV high luminosity μ^+ μ^- colliders, and of a 0.5 TeV lower luminosity demonstration machine. We discuss the various systems in such muon colliders, starting from the proton accelerator needed to generate the muons and proceeding through muon cooling, acceleration and storage in a collider ring. Detector background, polarization, and nonstandard operating conditions are discussed.
