Antiferro-quadrupolar correlations in the quantum spin ice candidate Pr2Zr2O7

We present an experimental study of the quantum spin ice candidate pyrochlore coumpound \przr\ by means of magnetization measurements, specific heat and neutron scattering up to 12 T and down to 60 mK. When the field is applied along the $[111]$ and $[1\bar{1}0]$ directions, ${\bf k}=0$ field induced structures settle in. We find that the ordered moment rises slowly, even at very low temperature, in agreement with macroscopic magnetization. Interestingly, for $H \parallel [1\bar{1}0]$, the ordered moment appears on the so called $α$ chains only. The spin excitation spectrum is essentially {\it inelastic} and consists in a broad flat mode centered at about 0.4 meV with a magnetic structure factor which resembles the spin ice pattern. For $H \parallel [1\bar{1}0]$ (at least up to 2.5 T), we find that a well defined mode forms from this broad response, whose energy increases with $H$, in the same way as the temperature of the specific heat anomaly. We finally discuss these results in the light of mean field calculations and propose a new interpretation where quadrupolar interactions play a major role, overcoming the magnetic exchange. In this picture, the spin ice pattern appears shifted up to finite energy because of those new interactions. We then propose a range of acceptable parameters for \przr\, that allow to reproduce several experimental features observed under field. With these parameters, the actual ground state of this material would be an antiferroquadrupolar liquid with spin-ice like excitations.

Exploring metamagnetism of single crystalline \eun\ by neutron scattering

We present here a neutron diffraction study, both in zero field and as a function of magnetic field, of the magnetic structure of the tetragonal intermetallic \eun\ on a single crystalline sample. This material is known to undergo a cascade of transitions, first at 13.2\,K towards an incommensurate modulated magnetic structure, then at 10.5\,K to an equal moment, yet undetermined, antiferromagnetic structure. We show here that the low temperature phase presents a spiral moment arrangement with wave-vector {\bf k} = ($\frac{1}{4},δ,0)$. For a magnetic field applied along the tetragonal {\bf c}-axis, the square root of the scattering intensity of a chosen reflection matches very well the complex metamagnetic behavior of the magnetization along {\bf c} measured previously. For the magnetic field applied along the {\bf b}-axis, two magnetic transitions are observed below the transition to a fully polarized state.

Magnetic ground state and spin fluctuations in MnGe chiral magnet as studied by Muon Spin Rotation

We have studied by muon spin resonance (μSR) the helical ground state and fluctuating chiral phase recently observed in the MnGe chiral magnet. At low temperature, the muon polarization shows double period oscillations at short time scales. Their analysis, akin to that recently developed for MnSi [A. Amato et al., Phys. Rev. B 89, 184425 (2014)], provides an estimation of the field distribution induced by the Mn helical order at the muon site. The refined muon position agrees nicely with ab initio calculations. With increasing temperature, an inhomogeneous fluctuating chiral phase sets in, characterized by two well separated frequency ranges which coexist in the sample. Rapid and slow fluctuations, respectively associated with short range and long range ordered helices, coexist in a large temperature range below T$_{N}$ = 170 K. We discuss the results with respect to MnSi, taking the short helical period, metastable quenched state and peculiar band structure of MnGe into account.

Enhanced conduction band density of states in intermetallic EuTSi$_3$ (T=Rh, Ir)

We report on the physical properties of single crystalline EuRhSi$_3$ and polycrystalline EuIrSi$_3$, inferred from magnetisation, electrical transport, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy. These previously known compounds crystallise in the tetragonal BaNiSn$_3$-type structure. The single crystal magnetisation in EuRhSi$_3$ has a strongly anisotropic behaviour at 2 K with a spin-flop field of 13 T, and we present a model of these magnetic properties which allows the exchange constants to be determined. In both compounds, specific heat shows the presence of a cascade of two close transitions near 50 K, and the $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectra demonstrate that the intermediate phase has an incommensurate amplitude modulated structure. We find anomalously large values, with respect to other members of the series, for the RKKY Néel temperature, for the spin-flop field (13 T), for the spin-wave gap ($\simeq$ 20-25 K) inferred from both resistivity and specific heat data, for the spin-disorder resistivity in EuRhSi$_3$ ($\simeq 35$ $μ$Ohm.cm) and for the saturated hyperfine field (52 T). We show that all these quantities depend on the electronic density of states at the Fermi level, implying that the latter must be strongly enhanced in these two materials. EuIrSi$_3$ exhibits a giant magnetoresistance ratio, with values exceeding 600 % at 2 K in a field of 14 T.

Magnetic properties and complex magnetic phase diagram in non centrosymmetric EuRhGe$_3$ and EuIrGe$_3$ single crystals

We report the magnetic properties of two Eu based compounds, single crystalline EuIrGe$_3$ and EuRhGe$_3$, inferred from magnetisation, electrical transport, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy. These previously known compounds crystallise in the non-centrosymmetric, tetragonal, $I4mm$, BaNiSn$_3$-type structure. Single crystals of EuIrGe$_3$ and EuRhGe$_3$ were grown using high temperature solution growth method using In as flux. EuIrGe$_3$ exhibits two magnetic orderings at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 12.4 K, and $T_{\rm N2}$ = 7.3 K. On the other hand EuRhGe$_3$ presents a single magnetic transition with a $T_{\rm N}$ = 12 K. $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectra present evidence for a cascade of transitions from paramagnetic to incommensurate amplitude modulated followed by an equal moment antiferromagnetic phase at lower temperatures in EuIrGe$_3$, the transitions having a substantial first order character. On the other hand the $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectra at 4.2 and 9 K in EuRhGe$_3$ present evidence of a single magnetic transition. In both compounds a superzone gap is observed for the current density $J\parallel$ [001], which enhances with transverse magnetic field. The magnetisation measured up to 14 T shows the occurrence of field induced transitions, which are well documented in the magnetotransport data as well. The magnetic phase diagram constructed from these data is complex, revealing the presence of many phases in the $H-T$ phase space.

Mesoscopic correlations in Tb2Ti2O7 spin liquid

We have studied the spin correlations with $\bf{k}$= ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) propagation vector which appear below 0.4\, K in \tbti\ spin liquid by combining powder neutron diffraction and specific heat on Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ samples with $x$=0, 0.01, -0.01. The $\bf{k}$= ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) order clearly appears on all neutron patterns by subtracting a pattern at 1.2(1)\,K. Refining the subtracted patterns at 0.07\,K yields two possible spin structures, with spin-ice-like and monopole-like correlations respectively. Mesoscopic correlations involve Tb moments of 1 to 2 \mub\ ordered on a length scale of about 20 Å. In addition, long range order involving a small spin component of 0.1 to 0.2 \mub\ is detected for the $x$= 0 and 0.01 samples showing a peak in the specific heat. Comparison with previous single crystals data suggests that the ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) order settles in through nanometric spin textures with dominant spin ice character and correlated orientations, analogous to nanomagnetic twins.

Anisotropic putative "up-up-down" magnetic structure in EuTAl$_4$Si$_2$ (T = Rh and Ir)

We present detailed investigations in single crystals of two recently reported quaternary intermetallic compounds EuRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and EuIrAl$_4$Si$_2$ employing magnetization, electrical resistivity in zero and applied fields, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements. The two compounds order antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 11.7 and 14.7\,K, respectively, each undergoing two magnetic transitions: the first from paramagnetic to incommensurate modulated antiferromagnetic, the second at lower temperature to a commensurate antiferromagnetic phase as confirmed by heat capacity and Mössbauer spectra. The magnetic properties in the ordered state present a large anisotropy despite Eu$^{2+}$ being an $S$-state ion for which the single-ion anisotropy is expected to be weak. Two features in the magnetization measured along the $c$-axis are prominent. At 1.8\,K, a ferromagnetic-like jump occurs at very low field to a value one third of the saturation magnetization (1/3 M$_0$) followed by a wide plateau up to 2\,T for T = Rh and 4\,T for T = Ir. At this field value, a sharp hysteretic spin-flop transition occurs to a fully saturated state (M$_0$). Surprisingly, the magnetization does not return to origin when the field is reduced to zero in the return cycle, as expected in an antiferromagnet. Instead, a remnant magnetization 1/3 M$_0$ is observed and the magnetic loop around the origin shows hysteresis. This suggests that the zero field magnetic structure has a ferromagnetic component, and we present a model with up to third neighbor exchange and dipolar interaction which reproduces the magnetization curves and hints to an "up-up-down" magnetic structure in zero field.

EuNiGe3, an equal moment anisotropic antiferromagnet

Single crystals of EuNiGe$_3$ crystallizing in the non-centrosymmetric BaNiSn$_3$-type structure have been grown using In flux, enabling us to explore the anisotropic magnetic properties which was not possible with previously reported polycrystalline samples. The EuNiGe$_3$ single crystalline sample is found to order antiferromagnetically at 13.2 K as revealed from the magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity data. The low temperature magnetization M(H) is distinctly different for field parallel to ${ab}$-plane and $c$-axis; the ${ab}$-plane magnetization varies nearly linearly with field before the occurrence of an induced ferromagnetic phase (spin-flip) at 6.2 Tesla; on the other hand M(H) along the $c$-axis is accompanied by two metamagnetic transitions followed by a spin-flip at 4.1 T. A model including anisotropic exchange and dipole-dipole interactions reproduces the main features of magnetization plots but falls short of full representation. (H,T) phase diagrams have been constructed for the field applied along the principal directions. From the $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectra, we determine that the 13.2 K transition leads to an incommensurate antiferromagnetic intermediate phase followed by a transition near 10.5 K to a commensurate antiferromagnetic configuration.

Order by Disorder and Energetic Selection of the Ground State in the XY Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet Er2Ti2O7. An Inelastic Neutron Scattering Study

Examples of materials where an "order by disorder" mechanism is at play to select a particular ground state are scarce. It has recently been proposed, however, that the antiferromagnetic XY pyrochlore Er2Ti2O7, reveals a most convincing case of this mechanism. Observation of a spin gap at zone centers has recently been interpreted as a corroboration of this physics. In this paper, we argue, however, that the anisotropy generated by the interaction-induced admixing between the crystal-field ground and excited levels provides for an alternative mechanism. It especially predicts the opening of a spin gap of about 15 micro-eV, which is of the same order of magnitude as the one observed experimentally. We report new high resolution inelastic neutron scattering data which can be well understood within this scenario.

Spin dynamics and disorder effects in the S=1/2 kagome Heisenberg spin liquid phase of kapellasite

We report $^{35}$Cl NMR, ESR, $μ$SR and specific heat measurements on the $S=1/2$ frustrated kagomé magnet kapellasite, $α-$Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, where a gapless spin liquid phase is stabilized by a set of competing exchange interactions. Our measurements confirm the ferromagnetic character of the nearest-neighbour exchange interaction $J_1$ and give an energy scale for the competing interactions $|J| \sim 10$ K. The study of the temperature-dependent ESR lineshift reveals a moderate symmetric exchange anisotropy term $D$, with $|D/J|\sim 3$%. These findings validate a posteriori the use of the $J_1 - J_2 - J_d$ Heisenberg model to describe the magnetic properties of kapellasite [Bernu et al., Phys. Rev. B 87, 155107 (2013)]. We further confirm that the main deviation from this model is the severe random depletion of the magnetic kagomé lattice by 27%, due to Cu/Zn site mixing, and specifically address the effect of this disorder by $^{35}$Cl NMR, performed on an oriented polycrystalline sample. Surprisingly, while being very sensitive to local structural deformations, our NMR measurements demonstrate that the system remains homogeneous with a unique spin susceptibility at high temperature, despite a variety of magnetic environments. Unconventional spin dynamics is further revealed by NMR and $μ$SR in the low-$T$, correlated, spin liquid regime, where a broad distribution of spin-lattice relaxation times is observed. We ascribe this to the presence of local low-energy modes.

Spin Liquid Ground State in the Frustrated Kagome Antiferromagnet MgCu3(OH)6Cl2

We report muSR experiments on Mg{x}Cu{4-x}(OH)6Cl2 with x \sim 1, a new material isostructural to Herbertsmithite exhibiting regular kagome planes of spin 1/2 (Cu^{2+}), and therefore a candidate for a spin liquid ground state. We evidence the absence of any magnetic ordering down to 20 mK (\sim J/10^4). We investigate in detail the spin dynamics on well characterized samples in zero and applied longitudinal fields and propose a low T defect based interpretation to explain the unconventional dynamics observed in the quantum spin liquid phase.

The modulated antiferromagnetic structures in multiferroic FeVO4: a 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy investigation

We present a 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy study of the two incommensurate magnetic phases in the multiferroic material FeVO4. We devise lineshapes appropriate for planar elliptical and collinear modulated magnetic structures and show that they reproduce very well the Mössbauer spectra in FeVO4, in full qualitative agreement with a previous neutron diffraction study. Quantitatively, our spectra provide precise determinations of the characteristics of the elliptical and modulated structures which are in good agreement with the neutron diffraction results. We find that the hyperfine field elliptical modulation persists as T goes to 0, which we attribute to an anisotropy of the hyperfine interaction since a moment modulation is forbidden at T=0 for a spin only ion like Fe3+.

Field-induced magnetic structures in Tb2Ti2O7 spin liquid under field H || [111]

We have studied the field-induced magnetic structures of Tb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore by single-crystal neutron diffraction under a field applied along the [111] local anisotropy axis, up to H=12T and down to T=40mK. We collected a hundred magnetic Bragg peaks for each field and temperature value and refined the magnetic structures with k=0 propagation vector by performing a symmetry analysis in the space group R-3m, reducing the number of free parameters to three only. We observe a gradual reorientation of the Tb magnetic moments towards the field direction, close to a "3-in, 1-out / 1-in, 3-out" spin structure in the whole field range 0.05-12T. We perform a quantitative comparison with mean-field calculations and we propose the presence of a low-temperature dynamic symmetry breaking of the local trigonal symmetry, akin to a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, i.e. preserving the overall cubic symmetry. We discuss the possible origin of this off-diagonal mixing term in the crystal field hamiltonian in terms of quadrupole-quadrupole interaction or magneto-elastic effects.

Gapless spin liquid ground state in the S=1/2 vanadium oxyfluoride kagome antiferromagnet [NH4]2[C7H14N][V7O6F18]

The vanadium oxyfluoride [NH4]2[C7H14N][V7O6F18] (DQVOF) is a geometrically frustrated magnetic bilayer material. The structure consists of S=1/2 kagome planes of V4+ d1 ions with S=1 V3+ d2 ions located between the kagome layers. Muon spin relaxation measurements demonstrate the absence of spin freezing down to 40 mK despite an energy scale of 60 K for antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. From magnetization and heat capacity measurements we conclude that the S=1 spins of the interplane V3+ ions are weakly coupled to the kagome layers, such that DQVOF can be viewed as an experimental model for S=1/2 kagome physics, and that it displays a gapless spin liquid ground state.

Low temperature diffuse neutron scattering and magnetisation in single crystal Tb2Ti2O7

We present an interpretation of zero field diffuse neutron scattering and of high field magnetisation data at very low temperature in the frustrated pyrochlore system Tb2Ti2O7. This material has antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and it is expected to have Ising character at low temperature. Contrary to expectations, it shows no magnetic ordering down to 0.05\,K, being thus labelled a "spin liquid". However, the ground state in Tb2Ti2O7 is not a mere fluctuating moment paramagnet but, as demonstrated by very recent experiments, a state where the electronic degrees of freedom are hybridised with the phononic variables in an unconventional way. We show here that, by approximating this complex and still unraveled electron-phonon interaction by a dynamic Jahn-Teller coupling, one can account rather well for the diffuse neutron scattering and the low temperature isothermal magnetisation. We discuss the shortcomings of this picture which arise mainly from the fact that the singlet electronic mean field ground state of the model fails to reproduce the observed strong intensity of the elastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering.

Double-layered monopolar order in Tb2Ti2O7 spin liquid

Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 spin ices exhibit elementary excitations akin to magnetic monopoles. Here we focus on Tb2Ti2O7 spin liquid, where correlated magnetic moments keep fluctuating down to very low temperatures. Using a monopole picture, we have re-analyzed the field-induced magnetic structure previously determined by neutron diffraction in Tb2Ti2O7. We show that under a high field applied along a [110] direction, Tb2Ti2O7 orders as a three dimensional arrangement of monopole and antimonopole double layers. In contrast, Ho2Ti2O7 spin ice in the same conditions behaves as a monopole-free state. By symmetry analysis we derived the distortions compatible with the observed magnetic structure of Tb2Ti2O7 which can be related to the appearance of the double-layered monopolar order.

Incommensurate Spin Density Wave versus local magnetic inhomogeneities in Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2: a 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy study

We report 57Fe Mossbauer spectral results in pure and doped Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2 with x=0.01 and 0.03. We show that all these materials present a first-order magnetic transition towards a magnetically ordered state. In the doped compounds, a broad distribution of Fe hyperfine fields is present in the magnetic phase. We successfully fit the Mossbauer data in Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2 in the framework of two different models: 1) an incommensurate spin density wave; 2) a dopant-induced perturbation of the Fe polarization, recently proposed to interpret 75As NMR data in Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2, which is valid only in the very dilute limit x=0.01. Moreover, we show here that these NMR data can also be successfully analysed in terms of the 'incommensurate model' for all doping contents by using the parameters obtained from the Mossbauer spectral analysis. Therefore it is not possible to rule out the presence of an incommensurate spin density wave on the basis of the 75As NMR data.

Singlet Ground State of the Quantum Antiferromagnet Ba3CuSb2O9

We present local probe results on the honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Ba3CuSb2O9. Muon spin relaxation measurements in zero field down to 20 mK show unequivocally that there is a total absence of spin freezing in the ground state. Sb NMR measurements allow us to track the intrinsic susceptibility of the lattice, which shows a maximum at around 55 K and drops to zero in the low-temperature limit. The spin-lattice relaxation rate shows two characteristic energy scales, including a field-dependent crossover to exponential low-temperature behavior, implying gapped magnetic excitations.

Antiferromagnetic ordering in EuPtGe$_3$ single crystal

The magnetic properties of single crystalline EuPtGe$_3$, crystallizing in the non-centrosymmetric BaNiSn$_3$-type crystal structure, have been studied by means of magnetisation, electrical resistivity, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy. The susceptibility and heat capacity data indicate a magnetic transition at $T_{\rm N}$ = 11\,K. The Mössbauer data confirm this conclusion, but evidence a slight first order character of the transition. Analysing the magnetisation data using a mean field model with two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices allows to explain some aspects of the magnetic behaviour, and to derive the first and second neighbour exchange integrals in EuPtGe$_3$.

InMnO3 : a fully frustrated multiferroic

InMnO$_3$ is a peculiar member of the hexagonal manganites h-RMnO$_3$ (where R is a rare earth metal element), showing crystalline, electronic and magnetic properties at variance with the other compounds of the family. We have studied high quality samples synthesized at high pressure and temperature by powder neutron diffraction. The position of the Mn ions is found to be close to the threshold $\it{x}=1/3$ where superexchange Mn-Mn interactions along the $\it{c}$ axis compensate. Magnetic long range order occurs below $T_{\rm N}$= 120(2) K with a magnetic unit cell doubled along $\it{c}$, whereas short range two dimensional dynamical spin correlations are observed above $T_{\rm N}$. We propose that pseudo-dipolar interactions are responsible for the long period magnetic structure.

Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, a two singlet spin-liquid pyrochlore

The pyrochlore compound \tbti\ is known to remain in a spin-liquid state down to the lowest attainable temperature (0.05\,K), whereas current theories predict it should order into an antiferromagnetic structure. A number of models have been developed in order to resolve this discrepancy, but they could not obtain a spin-liquid ground state. We present here an explanation for the lack of magnetic order in \tbti\ based on the presence of a Jahn-Teller-like distortion from the local trigonal symmetry and on the physics of the two-singlet system coupled by exchange.

Field evolution of the magnetic structures in Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ through the critical point

We have measured neutron diffraction patterns in a single crystal sample of the pyrochlore compound Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ in the antiferromagnetic phase (T=0.3\,K), as a function of the magnetic field, up to 6\,T, applied along the [110] direction. We determine all the characteristics of the magnetic structure throughout the quantum critical point at $H_c$=2\,T. As a main result, all Er moments align along the field at $H_c$ and their values reach a minimum. Using a four-sublattice self-consistent calculation, we show that the evolution of the magnetic structure and the value of the critical field are rather well reproduced using the same anisotropic exchange tensor as that accounting for the local paramagnetic susceptibility. In contrast, an isotropic exchange tensor does not match the moment variations through the critical point. The model also accounts semi-quantitatively for other experimental data previously measured, such as the field dependence of the heat capacity, energy of the dispersionless inelastic modes and transition temperature.

Field-Induced magnetic structures in Tb2Ti2O7 at low temperatures: From spin-ice to spin-flip structures

We studied the field-induced magnetic structures of the Tb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore by single-crystal neutron diffraction with a magnetic field applied along a [110] axis, focusing on the influence of a small misalignment. Both induced magnetic structures with k=0 and k=(0,0,1) propagation vectors are found to be sensitive to the misalignment, which controls the magnitude and orientation of the Tb moments involved in the beta chains, with local [111] anisotropy axis perpendicular to the field. For k=0, spin-ice-like structures are observed for a misalignment of a few degrees, whereas other structures, where the Tb-beta moments flip by "melting" on the field axis, occur when the field is perfectly aligned. The field evolution of the k=0 structure is well reproduced by a molecular field model with anisotropic exchange. We give a complete symmetry analysis of the k=0 and k=(0,0,1) magnetic structures, both being described by the basis functions of single irreducible representations.

Incommensurate spin density wave in Co-doped BaFe2As2

57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements are presented in the underdoped Ba(Fe{1-x}Cox)2As2 series for x=0.014 (T_c < 1.4K) and x=0.03 and 0.045 (T_c ~ 2 and 12K respectively). The spectral shapes in the so-called spin-density wave (SDW) phase are interpreted in terms of incommensurate modulation of the magnetic structure, and allow the shape of the modulation to be determined. In undoped BaFe2As2, the magnetic structure is commensurate, and we find that incommensurability is present at the lowest doping level (x=0.014). As Co doping increases, the low temperature modulation progressively loses its "squaredness" and tends to a sine-wave. The same trend occurs for a given doping level, as temperature increases. We find that a magnetic hyperfine component persists far above the SDW transition, its intensity being progressively tranferred to a paramagnetic component on heating.

Magnetic properties of EuPtSi$_3$ single crystals

Single crystals of EuPtSi$_3$, which crystallize in the BaNiSn$_3$-type crystal structure, have been grown by high temperature solution growth method using molten Sn as the solvent. EuPtSi$_3$ which lacks the inversion symmetry and has only one Eu site in the unit cell is found to be an antiferromagnet with two successive magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 17 K and $T_{\rm N2}$ = 16 K, as inferred from magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer measurements. The isothermal magnetization data for $H \parallel$ [001] reveal a metamagnetic transition at a critical field $H_{\rm c}$ = 1 T. The magnetization saturates to a moment value of 6.43 $μ_{\rm B}$/Eu above 5.9 T (9.2 T) for $H \parallel $ [001] ([100]), indicating that these fields are spin-flip fields for the divalent Eu moments along the two axes. The origin of this anisotropic behaviour is discussed. A magnetic (H, T) phase diagram has been constructed from the temperature dependence of isothermal magnetization data. The reduced jump in the heat capacity at $T_{\rm N1}$ indicates a transition to an incommensurate, amplitude modulated antiferromagnetic structure. The shape of the hyperfine field split Mössbauer spectrum at $T_{\rm N1}$ provides additional support for the proposed nature of this magnetic transition.

Dynamic correlated Cu(2) magnetic moments in superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Co_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7)

We have examined the magnetic properties of superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Co_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7, T_sc = 65 K) using elastic neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation (muSR) on single crystal samples. The elastic neutron scattering measurements evidence magnetic reflections which correspond to a commensurate antiferromagnetic Cu(2) magnetic structure with an associated Neel temperature T_N ~ 400 K. This magnetically correlated state is not evidenced by the muSR measurements. We suggest this apparent anomaly arises because the magnetically correlated state is dynamic in nature. It fluctuates with rates that are low enough for it to appear static on the time scale of the elastic neutron scattering measurements, whereas on the time scale of the muSR measurements, at least down to ~ 50 K, it fluctuates too fast to be detected. The different results confirm the conclusions reached from work on equivalent polycrystalline compounds: the evidenced fluctuating, correlated Cu(2) moments coexist at an atomic level with superconductivity.

Dynamic correlated Cu(2) magnetic moments in superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Ni_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7)

We have examined the magnetic properties of polycrystalline, superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Ni_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7, T_sc ~ 75 K) using two local probe techniques: 170Yb Moessbauer down to 0.1 K and muon spin relaxation (muSR) down to 1.5 K. At 0.1 K, the 170Yb measurements show the Cu(2) over essentially all the sample volume carry magnetically correlated moments which are static on the time-scale of 10^{-9} s. The moments show a distribution in size. The correlations are probably short range. As the temperature increases, the correlated moments are observed to fluctuate with measurable rates (in the GHz range) which increase as the temperature increases and which show a wide distribution. The muSR measurements also evidence that the fluctuation rates increase with increasing temperature and there is a distribution. The evidenced fluctuating, correlated Cu(2) moments coexist at an atomic level with superconductivity.

Magnetic excitations in dipolar pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$

The spin dynamics in the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet $\rm Gd_2Sn_2O_7$ is studied by means of the electron spin resonance. In the ordered phase ($T_N = 1$ K), we have detected three gapped resonance modes. Their values agree well with the developed spin-wave theory which takes into account the Heisenberg nearest-neighbor exchange, the single-ion anisotropy and the long-range dipolar interactions. The theory also predicts a fourth lowest-frequency gap, which lies beyond the experimental range of frequencies, but determines the exponential decrease of the specific heat at low temperature.

Spin-liquid dynamics of pyrochlore magnets Gd2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7

The spin-liquid phase of two highly frustrated pyrochlore magnets Gd2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7 is probed using electron spin resonance in the temperature range 1.3 - 30 K. The deviation of the absorption line from the paramagnetic position ν=γH observed in both compounds below the Curie-Weiss temperature Θ_CW ~ 10 K, suggests an opening up of a gap in the excitation spectra. On cooling to 1.3 K (which is above the ordering transition T_N ~ 1.0 K) the resonance spectrum is transformed into a wide band of excitations with the gap amounting to Δ~ 26 GHz (1.2 K) in Gd2Ti2O7 and 18 GHz (0.8 K) in Gd2Sn2O7. The gaps increase linearly with the external magnetic field. For Gd2Ti2O7 this branch co-exists with an additional nearly paramagnetic line absent in Gd2Sn2O7. These low lying excitations with gaps, which are preformed in the spin-liquid state, may be interpreted as collective spin modes split by the single-ion anisotropy.

First Order Transition in the Spin Dynamics of Geometrically Frustrated Yb2Ti2O7

Using neutron diffraction, 170Yb Mossbauer and muSR spectroscopies, we have examined the pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7 where the Yb3+ S'=1/2 ground state has planar anisotropy. Below ~0.24K, the temperature of the known specific heat lambda transition, there is no long range magnetic order. We show that the transition corresponds to a first order change in the fluctuation rate of the Yb3+ spins. Above the transition temperature, the rate, in the GHz range, follows a thermal excitation law, whereas below, the rate, in the MHz range, is essentially temperature independent indicative of a quantum fluctuation regime.
