QED at NNLO with McMule

McMule is a framework for fully differential higher-order QED calculations of scattering and decay processes involving leptons. It keeps finite lepton masses, which regularises collinear singularities. Soft singularities are treated with dimensional regularisation and using FKS$^\ell$ subtraction. We describe the implementation of the framework in Fortran 95, list the processes that are currently implemented, and give instructions on how to run the code. In addition, we present new phenomenological results for muon-electron scattering and lepton-proton scattering, including the dominant NNLO corrections. While the applications presented focus on MUonE, MUSE, and P2, the code can be used for a large number of planned and running experiments.

Shape coexistence in 153Ho

The high-spin states in 153Ho, have been studied by 139 57 La(20Ne, 6n) reaction at a projectile energy of 139 MeV at Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata, India, utilizing an earlier campaign of Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) setup. Data from gamma-gamma coincidence, directional correlation and polarization measurements have been analyzed to assign and confirm the spins and parities of the levels. We have suggested a few additions and revisions of the reported level scheme of 153Ho. The RF-gamma time difference spectra have been useful to confirm the half-life of an isomer in this nucleus. From the comparison of experimental and theoretical results, it is found that there are definite indications of shape coexistence in this nucleus. The experimental and calculated lifetimes of several isomers have been compared to follow the coexistence and evolution of shape with increasing spin.

Supersymmetric analogue of BC_N type rational integrable models with polarized spin reversal operators

We derive the exact spectra as well as partition functions for a class of $BC_N$ type of spin Calogero models, whose Hamiltonians are constructed by using supersymmetric analogues of polarized spin reversal operators (SAPSRO). The strong coupling limit of these spin Calogero models yields $BC_N$ type of Polychronakos-Frahm (PF) spin chains with SAPSRO. By applying the freezing trick, we obtain an exact expression for the partition functions of such PF spin chains. We also derive a formula which expresses the partition function of any $BC_N$ type of PF spin chain with SAPSRO in terms of partition functions of several $A_K$ type of supersymmetric PF spin chains, where $K\leq N-1$. Subsequently we show that an extended boson-fermion duality relation is obeyed by the partition functions of the $BC_N$ type of PF chains with SAPSRO. Some spectral properties of these spin chains, like level density distribution and nearest neighbour spacing distribution, are also studied.

Complex fragment emission in low energy light-ion reactions

Inclusive energy spectra of the complex fragments (3 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 5) emitted in the reactions $^{12}$C (77 MeV)+ $^{28}$Si, $^{11}$B (64 MeV)+ $^{28}$Si and $^{12}$C (73 MeV)+ $^{27}$Al (all having the same excitation energy of $ \sim$ 67 MeV), have been measured in the angular range of 10$^\circ$ $\lesssim θ_{lab} \lesssim$ 60$^\circ$. The fully energy damped (fusion-fission) and the partially energy damped (deep inelastic) components of the fragment energy spectra have been extracted. It has been found that the yields of the fully energy damped fragments for all the above reactions are in conformity with the respective statistical model predictions. The time scales of various deep inelastic fragment emissions have been extracted from the angular distribution data. The angular momentum dissipation in deep inelastic collisions has been estimated from the data and it has been found to be close to the corresponding sticking limit value.

New Primary Mechanisms for the Synthesis of Rare 9Be in Early Supernovae

We present two new primary mechanisms for the synthesis of the rare nucleus 9Be, both triggered by nu-induced production of 3H followed by 4He(3H,gamma)7Li in the He shells of core-collapse supernovae. For progenitors of ~8M_sun, 7Li(3H,n_0)9Be occurs during the rapid expansion of the shocked He shell. Alternatively, for ultra-metal-poor progenitors of ~11-15M_sun, 7Li(n,gamma)8Li(n,gamma)9Li(e^-anti-nu_e)9Be occurs with neutrons produced by 4He(anti-nu_e,e^+n)3H, assuming a hard effective anti-nu_e spectrum from oscillations (which also leads to heavy element production through rapid neutron capture) and a weak explosion (so the 9Be survives shock passage). We discuss the associated production of 7Li and 11B, noting patterns in LiBeB production that might distinguish the new mechanisms from others.

A Long, Cold, Early r-process? Neutrino-induced Nucleosynthesis in He Shells Revisited

We revisit a neutrino-driven r-process mechanism in the He shell of a core-collapse supernova, finding that it could succeed in early stars of metallicity < solar/1000, at relatively low temperatures and neutron densities, producing A ~ 130 and 195 abundance peaks over ~ 10-20 s. The mechanism is sensitive to the neutrino emission model and to neutrino oscillations. We discuss the implications of an r-process that could alter interpretations of abundance data from metal-poor stars, and point out the need for further calculations that include effects of the supernova shock.

Quantitative magnetic force microscopy on permalloy dots using an iron filled carbon nanotube probe

We have characterized a new Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) probe based on an iron filled carbon nanotube (FeCNT) using MFM imaging on permalloy (Py) disks saturated in a high magnetic field perpendicular to the disk plane. The experimental data are accurately modeled by describing the FeCNT probe as having a single magnetic monopole at its tip whose effective magnetic charge is determined by the diameter of the iron wire enclosed in the carbon nanotube and its saturation magnetization 4 πM_s ~ 2.2 x 10^4 G. A magnetic monopole probe enables quantitative measurements of the magnetic field gradient close to the sample surface. The lateral resolution is defined by the diameter of the iron wire ~15 nm and the probe-sample separation. As a demonstration, the magnetic field gradients close to the surface of a Py dot in domain and vortex states were imaged.

Manipulating Spins by Cantilever Synchronized Frequency Modulation: A Variable Resolution Magnetic Resonance Force Microscope

We report a new spin manipulation protocol for periodically reversing the sample magnetization for Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy. The protocol modulates the microwave excitation frequency synchronously with the position of the oscillating detection cantilever, thus allowing manipulation of the spin magnetization independent of both magnetic field gradient strength and cantilever response time. This allows continuous variation of the detected sample volume and is effective regardless of spin relaxation rate. This enhanced flexibility improves the utility of MRFM as a generally applicable imaging and characterization tool.
