The AIDA-2020 TLU: a Flexible Trigger Logic Unit for Test Beam Facilities

The AIDA-2020 Trigger Logic Unit (TLU) has been designed to be a flexible and easily configurable unit to provide trigger and control signals to devices employed during test beams, integrating them with the beam telescope. The most recent iteration of the TLU (v1E) has been re-designed within the AIDA-2020 project to integrate with hardware used in beam facilities. Configuration and communication with the TLU are performed over Ethernet. It can be employed as a stand-alone unit or be deployed as part of the EUDAQ2 data acquisition framework, which allows it to connect to a wide range of LHC readout systems. The TLU can operate with a sustained particle rate of 1 MHz and with instantaneous rates up to 20 MHz. In the current firmware iteration, the unit can time-stamp incoming signals with a resolution of 1.5 ns. The hardware, firmware and software designs of the TLU are freely accessible and benefit from constant inputs and upgrades from experienced users. TLU units have already been deployed successfully in beam lines at CERN and DESY.

EUDAQ2 -- A Flexible Data Acquisition Software Framework for Common Test Beams

The data acquisition software framework, EUDAQ, was originally developed to read out data from the EUDET-type pixel telescopes. This was successfully used in many test beam campaigns in which an external position and time reference were required. The software has recently undergone a significant upgrade, EUDAQ2, which is a generic, modern and modular system for use by many different detector types, ranging from tracking detectors to calorimeters. EUDAQ2 is suited as an overarching software that links individual detector readout systems and simplifies the integration of multiple detectors. The framework itself supports several triggering and event building modes. This flexibility makes test beams with multiple detectors significantly easier and more efficient, as EUDAQ2 can adapt to the characteristics of each detector prototype during testing. The system has been thoroughly tested during multiple test beams involving different detector prototypes. EUDAQ2 has now been released and is freely available under an open-source license.

Study of gas purifiers for the CMS RPC detector

The CMS RPC muon detector utilizes a gas recirculation system called closed loop (CL) to cope with large gas mixture volumes and costs. A systematic study of CL gas purifiers has been carried out over 400 days between July 2008 and August 2009 at CERN in a low-radiation test area, with the use of RPC chambers with currents monitoring, and gas analysis sampling points. The study aimed to fully clarify the presence of pollutants, the chemistry of purifiers used in the CL, and the regeneration procedure. Preliminary results on contaminants release and purifier characterization are reported.

The CMS RPC gas gain monitoring system: an overview and preliminary results

The status of the CMS RPC Gas Gain Monitoring (GGM) system developed at the Frascati Laboratory of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) is reported on. The GGM system is a cosmic ray telescope based on small RPC detectors operated with the same gas mixture used by the CMS RPC system. The GGM gain and efficiency are continuously monitored on-line, thus providing a fast and accurate determination of any shift in working point conditions. The construction details and the first result of GGM commissioning are described.
