ΓΓ-convergence for nonlocal phase transitions

preprint2011arXivOpen access

Abstract

We discuss the ΓΓ-convergence, under the appropriate scaling, of the energy functional ∥u∥Hs(Ω)2+∫ΩW(u)dx, \|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}^2+\int_ΩW(u)dx, with s∈(0,1)s \in (0,1), where ∥u∥Hs(Ω)\|u\|_{H^s(Ω)} denotes the total contribution from ΩΩ in the HsH^s norm of uu, and WW is a double-well potential. When s∈[1/2, 1)s\in [1/2,\,1), we show that the energy ΓΓ-converges to the classical minimal surface functional -- while, when s∈(0, 1/2)s\in(0,\,1/2), it is easy to see that the functional ΓΓ-converges to the nonlocal minimal surface functional.
