Arakelov-Milnor inequalities and maximal variations of Hodge structure

In this paper we study the $\mathbb{C}^*$-fixed points in moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface for a complex semisimple Lie group and its real forms. These fixed points are called Hodge bundles and correspond to complex variations of Hodge structure. We introduce a topological invariant for Hodge bundles that generalizes the Toledo invariant appearing for Hermitian Lie groups. A main result of this paper is a bound on this invariant which generalizes both the Milnor-Wood inequality of the Hermitian case and the Arakelov inequalities of classical variations of Hodge structure. When the generalized Toledo invariant is maximal, we establish rigidity results for the associated variations of Hodge structure which generalize known rigidity results for maximal Higgs bundles and their associated maximal representations in the Hermitian case.

A moment map interpretation of the Ricci form, Kähler--Einstein structures, and Teichmüller spaces

This paper surveys the role of moment maps in Kähler geometry. The first section discusses the Ricci form as a moment map and then moves on to moment map interpretations of the Kähler--Einstein condition and the scalar curvature (Quillen--Fujiki--Donaldson). The second section examines the ramifications of these results for various Teichmüller spaces and their Weil--Petersson symplectic forms and explains how these arise naturally from the construction of symplectic quotients. The third section discusses a symplectic form introduced by Donaldson on the space of Fano complex structures.

Action of the mapping class group on character varieties and Higgs bundles

We consider the action of a finite subgroup of the mapping class group $Mod(S)$ of an oriented compact surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$ on the moduli space $\mathcal{R}(S,G)$ of representations of $π_1(S)$ in a connected semisimple real Lie group $G$. Kerckhoff's solution of the Nielsen realization problem ensures the existence of an element $J$ in the Teichmüller space of $S$ for which $Γ$ can be realised as a subgroup of the group of automorphisms of $X=(S,J)$ which are holomorphic or antiholomorphic. We identify the fixed points of the action of $Γ$ on $\mathcal{R}(S,G)$ in terms of $G$-Higgs bundles on $X$ equipped with a certain twisted $Γ$-equivariant structure, where the twisting involves abelian and non-abelian group cohomology simultaneously. When the kernel of the isotropy representation of the maximal compact subgroup of $G$ is trivial, the fixed points can be described in terms of familiar objects on $Y=X/Γ^+$, where $Γ^+ \subset Γ$ is the maximal subgroup of $Γ$ consisting of holomorphic automorphisms of $X$. If $Γ=Γ^+$ one obtains actual $Γ$-equivariant $G$-Higgs bundles on $X$, which in turn correspond with parabolic Higgs bundles on $Y=X/Γ$ (this generalizes work of Nasatyr \& Steer for $G=SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ and Boden, Andersen & Grove and Furuta & Steer for $G=SU(n)$). If on the other hand $Γ$ has antiholomorphic automorphisms, the objects on $Y=X/Γ^+$ correspond with pseudoreal parabolic Higgs bundles. This is a generalization in the parabolic setup of the pseudoreal Higgs bundles studied by the first author in collaboration with Biswas & Hurtubise.

Pseudo-real principal $G$-bundles over a real curve

We consider stable and semistable principal bundles over a smooth projective real algebraic curve, equipped with a real or pseudo-real structure in the sense of Atiyah. After fixing suitable topological invariants, one can build a suitable gauge theory, and show that the resulting moduli spaces of pseudo-real bundles are connected. This in turn allows one to describe the various fixed point varieties on the complex moduli spaces under the action of the real involutions on the curve and the structure group.

Coupled equations for Kähler metrics and Yang-Mills connections

We study equations on a principal bundle over a compact complex manifold coupling a connection on the bundle with a Kahler structure on the base. These equations generalize the conditions of constant scalar curvature for a Kahler metric and Hermite-Yang-Mills for a connection. We provide a moment map interpretation of the equations and study obstructions for the existence of solutions, generalizing the Futaki invariant, the Mabuchi K-energy and geodesic stability. We finish by giving some examples of solutions.

Higgs bundles and surface group representations in the real symplectic group

In this paper we study the moduli space of representations of a surface group (i.e., the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface) in the real symplectic group Sp(2n,R). The moduli space is partitioned by an integer invariant, called the Toledo invariant. This invariant is bounded by a Milnor-Wood type inequality. Our main result is a count of the number of connected components of the moduli space of maximal representations, i.e. representations with maximal Toledo invariant. Our approach uses the non-abelian Hodge theory correspondence proved in a companion paper arXiv:0909.4487 [math.DG] to identify the space of representations with the moduli space of polystable Sp(2n,R)-Higgs bundles. A key step is provided by the discovery of new discrete invariants of maximal representations. These new invariants arise from an identification, in the maximal case, of the moduli space of Sp(2n,R)-Higgs bundles with a moduli space of twisted Higgs bundles for the group GL(n,R).

Pseudo-real principal Higgs bundles on compact Kaehler manifolds

Let $X$ be a compact connected Kähler manifold equipped with an anti-holomorphic involution which is compatible with the Kähler structure. Let $G$ be a connected complex reductive affine algebraic group equipped with a real form $σ_G$. We define pseudo-real principal $G$--bundles on $X$; these are generalizations of real algebraic principal $G$--bundles over a real algebraic variety. Next we define stable, semistable and polystable pseudo-real principal $G$--bundles. Their relationships with the usual stable, semistable and polystable principal $G$--bundles are investigated. We then prove that the following Donaldson--Uhlenbeck--Yau type correspondence holds: a pseudo-real principal $G$--bundle admits a compatible Einstein-Hermitian connection if and only if it is polystable. A bijection between the following two sets is established: 1) The isomorphism classes of polystable pseudo-real principal $G$--bundles such that all the rational characteristic classes of the underlying topological principal $G$--bundle vanish. 2) The equivalence classes of twisted representations of the extended fundamental group of $X$ in a $σ_G$--invariant maximal compact subgroup of $G$. (The twisted representations are defined using the central element in the definition of a pseudo-real principal $G$--bundle.) All these results are also generalized to the pseudo-real Higgs $G$--bundle.

The Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence, Higgs pairs and surface group representations

We develop a complete Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence for twisted pairs on a compact Riemann surface X. The main novelty lies in a careful study of the the notion of polystability for pairs, required for having a bijective correspondence between solutions to the Hermite-Einstein equations, on one hand, and polystable pairs, on the other. Our results allow us to establish rigorously the homemomorphism between the moduli space of polystable G-Higgs bundles on X and the character variety for representations of the fundamental group of X in G. We also study in detail several interesting examples of the correspondence for particular groups and show how to significantly simplify the general stability condition in these cases.

A Milnor-Wood inequality for complex hyperbolic lattices in quaternionic space

We prove a Milnor-Wood inequality for representations of the fundamental group of a compact complex hyperbolic manifold in the group of isometries of quaternionic hyperbolic space. Of special interest is the case of equality, and its application to rigidity. We show that equality can only be achieved for totally geodesic representations, thereby establishing a global rigidity theorem for totally geodesic representations.

Maximal surface group representations in isometry groups of classical Hermitian symmetric spaces

Higgs bundles and non-abelian Hodge theory provide holomorphic methods with which to study the moduli spaces of surface group representations in a reductive Lie group G. In this paper we survey the case in which G is the isometry group of a classical Hermitian symmetric space of non-compact type. Using Morse theory on the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles, we compute the number of connected components of the moduli space of representations with maximal Toledo invariant.

Moduli spaces of holomorphic triples over compact Riemann surfaces

A holomorphic triple over a compact Riemann surface consists of two holomorphic vector bundles and a holomorphic map between them. After fixing the topological types of the bundles and a real parameter, there exist moduli spaces of stable holomorphic triples. In this paper we study non-emptiness, irreducibility, smoothness, and birational descriptions of these moduli spaces for a certain range of the parameter. Our results have important applications to the study of the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of the surface into unitary Lie groups of indefinite signature, which we explore in a companion paper "Surface group representations in PU(p,q) and Higgs bundles". Another application, that we study in this paper, is to the existence of stable bundles on the product of the surface by the complex projective line. This paper, and its companion mentioned above, form a substantially revised version of math.AG/0206012.

Representations of the fundamental group of a surface in PU(p,q) and holomorphic triples

We count the connected components in the moduli space of PU(p,q)-representations of the fundamental group for a closed oriented surface. The components are labelled by pairs of integers which arise as topological invariants of the flat bundles associated to the representations. Our results show that for each allowed value of these invariants, which are bounded by a Milnor-Wood type inequality, there is a unique non-empty connected component. Interpreting the moduli space of representations as a moduli space of Higgs bundles, we take a Morse theoretic approach using a certain smooth proper function on the Higgs moduli space. A key step is the identification of the function's local minima as moduli spaces of holomorphic triples. We prove that these moduli spaces of triples are non-empty and irreducible.
