Octant Degeneracy and Plots of Parameter Degeneracy in Neutrino Oscillations Revisited

The three kinds of parameter degeneracy in neutrino oscillation, the intrinsic, sign and octant degeneracy, form an eight-fold degeneracy. The nature of this eight-fold degeneracy can be visualized on the ($\sin^22θ_{13}$, $1/\sin^2θ_{23}$)-plane, through quadratic curves defined by $P(ν_μ\toν_e)=$ const. and $P(\barν_μ\to\barν_e)=$ const., along with a straight line $P(ν_μ\toν_μ)=$ const. After $θ_{13}$ was determined by reactor neutrino experiments, the intrinsic degeneracy in $θ_{13}$ transforms into an alternative octant degeneracy in $θ_{23}$, which can potentially be resolved by incorporating the value of $P(ν_μ\toν_μ)$. In this paper, we analytically discuss whether this octant parameter degeneracy is resolved or persists in the future long baseline accelerator neutrino experiments, such as T2HK, DUNE, T2HKK and ESS$ν$SB. It is found that the energy spectra near the first oscillation maximum are effective in resolving the octant degeneracy, whereas those near the second oscillation maximum are not.

Search for sterile neutrinos by shower events at a future neutrino telescope

It is pointed out that searching for sterile neutrinos at high energy regions at a future IceCube-like facility has advantages compared with that of reactor or short baseline accelerator neutrino experiments, in which the size of the detector and energy resolution make it difficult to gain good sensitivity for a large mass-squared difference. In this study we show that it is possible to improve constraints on sterile neutrino mixing $θ_{14}$ for 1 eV$^2~\lesssim Δm_{41}^2\lesssim$ 100 eV$^2$ by looking for a dip in the shower events at an IceCube-like neutrino telescope whose volume is at least 10 times as large as that of IceCube and duration is 10 years. We also give an analytic expression for the oscillation probabilities in two cases where the condition of one mass scale dominance is satisfied.

Neutrino Oscillations at low energy long baseline experiments in the presence of nonstandard interactions and parameter degeneracy

We discuss the analytical expression of the oscillation probabilities at low energy long baseline experiments, such as T2HK and T2HKK in the presence of nonstandard interactions (NSIs). We show that these experiments are advantageous to explore the NSI parameters ($ε_D$, $ε_N$), which were suggested to be nonvanishing to account for the discrepancy between the solar neutrino and KamLAND data. We also show that, when the NSI parameters are small, parameter degeneracy in the CP phase $δ$, $ε_D$ and $ε_N$ can be resolved by combining data of the T2HK and T2HKK experiments.

Testing NSI suggested by the solar neutrino tension in T2HKK and DUNE

It was shown that the tension between the mass-squared differences obtained from solar neutrinos and those acquired through KamLAND experiments may be solved by the introduction of a non-standard flavor-dependent interaction (NSI) in neutrino propagation. In this study, we discuss the possibility of testing such a hypothesis using the future long-baseline neutrino experiments T2HKK and DUNE. Assuming that the NSI does not exist, we provide the excluded region within the ($ε_D$, $ε_N$) plane, where $ε_D$ and $ε_N$ are the parameters appearing in the solar neutrino analysis conducted with the NSI. We find that the best-fit value from the solar neutrino and KamLAND data (global analysis of a particular coupling to quarks) can be tested at more than 10$σ$ (3$σ$) by these two experiments for most of the parameter space.

Constraints on the flavor-dependent non-standard interaction in propagation from atmospheric neutrinos

The sensitivity of the atmospheric neutrino experiments to the non-standard flavor-dependent interaction in neutrino propagation is studied under the assumption that the only nonvanishing components of the non-standard matter effect are the electron and tau neutrino components $ε_{ee}$, $ε_{eτ}$, $ε_{ττ}$ and that the tau-tau component satisfies the constraint $ε_{ττ}=|ε_{eτ}|^2/(1+ε_{ee})$ which is suggested from the high energy behavior for atmospheric neutrino data.

Is nonstandard interaction a solution to the three neutrino tensions?

In this work we present a scenario in which a nonstandard interaction in neutrino propagation can explain the three major tensions in the neutrino oscillation data at present. These tensions are: (i) a non-zero best-fit value of the non-standard oscillation parameters in the the global analysis of the solar and KamLAND data which rules out the standard oscillation scenario at $90\%$ C.L, (ii) the measurement of the non-maximal value of $θ_{23}$ by NO$ν$A which excludes the maximal mixing at $2.5 σ$ C.L. and (iii) a discrepancy in the $θ_{13}$ measurement by T2K which has a tension with the reactor best-fit value of $\sin^2θ_{13}=0.021$ at $90\%$ C.L. Our results show that all these three above mentioned anomalies can be explained if one assumes the existence of the non-standard interactions in neutrino propagation with $θ_{23}=45^\circ$ and $\sin^2θ_{13}=0.021$ in the case of normal hierarchy. In our scenario the phase of $ε_{eτ}$ is zero and the most favorable value of the Dirac CP phase is approximately $255^\circ$.

The possibility to observe the non-standard interaction by the Hyperkamiokande atmospheric neutrino experiment

It was suggested that a tension between the mass-squared differences obtained from the solar neutrino and KamLAND experiments can be solved by introducing the non-standard flavor-dependent interaction in neutrino propagation. In this paper we discuss the possibility to test such a hypothesis by atmospheric neutrino observations at the future Hyper-Kamiokande experiment. Assuming that the mass hierarchy is known, we find that the best-fit value from the solar neutrino and KamLAND data can be tested at more than 8 $σ$, while the one from the global analysis can be examined at 5.0 $σ$ (1.4 $σ$) for the normal (inverted) mass hierarchy.

Will atmospheric neutrino experiment at Hyper-Kamiokande see non-standard interaction effects?

In this talk we discuss the possibility to test the hypothesis, which has been proposed to explain the tension between the mass-squared differences of the solar neutrino and KamLAND experiments by the non-standard flavor-dependent interaction in neutrino propagation, with the atmospheric neutrino observations at the future Hyper-Kamiokande experiment.

Constraints on non-standard flavor-dependent interactions from Superkamiokande and Hyperkamiokande

We investigate the constraint on the flavor-dependent neutral current Non-Standard Interactions in propagation from atmospheric neutrino experiments Superkamiokande and Hyperkamiokande. With the ansatz where the parameters which have strong constraints from other experiments are neglected, we show how these experiments put constraints on the remaining parameters of the Non-Standard Interactions.

Constraints on the non-standard interaction in propagation from atmospheric neutrinos

It is shown that the Superkamiokande (SK) data for 4438 days constrains $|\tanβ|\equiv|ε_{eτ}/(1+ε_{ee})|\lesssim 0.8$ at 2.5$σ$ (98.8\%) CL whereas the future Hyperkamiokande experiment for the same period of time as SK will constrain as $|\tanβ|\lesssim 0.3$ at 2.5$σ$CL from the energy rate analysis and the energy spectrum analysis will give even tighter bounds on $ε_{ee}$ and $|ε_{eτ}|$.

On nonadiabatic contributions to the neutrino oscillation probability and the formalism by Kimura, Takamura and Yokomakura

It is shown that it is possible to obtain the analytical expression for the effective mixing angle in matter using the formalism which was developed by Kimura, Takamura and Yokomakura for the neutrino oscillation probability in matter with constant density. If we assume that the imaginary part of the integral of the difference of the energy eigenvalues of the two levels at each level-crossing is given by the ratio $γ$ of the difference of the energy eigenvalues of the two levels to the derivative of the effective mixing angle at the level-crossing, then the nonadiabatic contribution to the oscillation probability can be expressed analytically by this formalism. We give one example in which the energy eigenvalues cannot be expressed as roots of a quadratic equation and we show that our assumption is correct in the approximation of the small mixing angle.

The KTY formalism and nonadiabatic contributions to the neutrino oscillation probability

It is shown how to obtain the analytical expression for the effective mixing angle in matter using the formalism which was developed by Kimura, Takamura and Yokomakura. If the baseline of the neutrino path is long enough so that averaging over rapid oscillations is a good approximation, then with the help of Landau's method, the nonadiabatic contribution to the oscillation probability can be expressed analytically by this formalism. We give two examples in which the present method becomes useful.

Measurement of a Phase of a Radio Wave Reflected from Rock Salt and Ice Irradiated by an Electron Beam for Detection of Ultra-High-Energy Neutrinos

We have found a radio-wave-reflection effect in rock salt for the detection of ultra-high energy neutrinos which are expected to be generated in Greisen, Zatsepin, and Kuzmin (GZK) processes in the universe. When an UHE neutrino interacts with rock salt or ice as a detection medium, a shower is generated. That shower is formed by hadronic and electromagnetic avalanche processes. The energy of the UHE neutrino shower converts to thermal energy through ionization processes. Consequently, the temperature rises along the shower produced by the UHE neutrino. The refractive index of the medium rises with temperature. The irregularity of the refractive index in the medium leads to a reflection of radio waves. This reflection effect combined with the long attenuation length of radio waves in rock salt and ice would yield a new method to detect UHE neutrinos. We measured the phase of the reflected radio wave under irradiation with an electron beam on ice and rock salt powder. The measured phase showed excellent consistence with the power reflection fraction which was measured directly. A model taking into account the temperature change explained the phase and the amplitude of the reflected wave. Therefore the reflection mechanism was confirmed. The power reflection fraction was compared with that calculated with the Fresnel equations, the ratio between the measured result and that obtained with the Fresnel equations in ice was larger than that of rock salt.

Search for sterile neutrinos at reactors

The sensitivity to the sterile neutrino mixing at very short baseline reactor neutrino experiments is investigated. In the case of conventional (thermal neutron) reactors it is found that the sensitivity is lost for $Δm^2 \gtrsim$ 1 eV$^2$ due to smearing of the reactor core size. On the other hand, in the case of an experimental fast neutron reactor Joyo, because of its small size, sensitivity to $\sin^22θ_{14}$ can be as good as 0.03 for $Δm^2 \sim$ several eV$^2$ with the Bugey-like detector setup.

Search for sterile neutrinos at reactors with a small core

The sensitivity to the sterile neutrino mixing at very short baseline reactor neutrino experiments is investigated. If the reactor core is relatively large as in the case of commercial reactors, then the sensitivity is lost for $Δm^2 \gtrsim$ 1 eV$^2$ due to smearing of the reactor core size. If the reactor core is small as in the case of the experimental fast neutron reactor Joyo, the ILL research reactor or the Osiris reactor, on the other hand, then sensitivity to $\sin^22θ_{14}$ can be as good as 0.03 for $Δm^2 \sim$ several eV$^2$ because of its small size.

Sensitivity of T2KK to non-standard interactions

Assuming only the non-zero electron and tau neutrino components $ε_{ee}$, $ε_{eτ}$, $ε_{ττ}$ of the non-standard matter effect and postulating the atmospheric neutrino constraint $ε_{ττ}=|ε_{eτ}|^2/(1+ε_{ee})$, the sensitivity to the non-standard interaction in neutrino propagation of the T2KK neutrino long-baseline experiment is estimated. It is found that T2KK can constrain the parameters $|ε_{ee}|\lesssim 1$, $|ε_{eτ}|\lesssim 0.2$.

Sensitivity of T2KK to the non-standard interaction in propagation

Assuming only the non-zero electron and tau neutrino components $ε_{ee}$, $ε_{eτ}$, $ε_{ττ}$ of the non-standard matter effect and postulating the atmospheric neutrino constraint $ε_{ττ}=|ε_{eτ}|^2/(1+ε_{ee})$, we study the sensitivity to the non-standard interaction in neutrino propagation of the T2KK neutrino long-baseline experiment. It is shown that T2KK can constrain the parameters $|ε_{ee}|\lesssim 1$, $|ε_{eτ}|\lesssim 0.2$. It is also shown that if $|ε_{eτ}|$ and $θ_{13}$ are large, then T2KK can determine the Dirac phase and the phase of $ε_{eτ}$ separately, due to the information at the two baselines. We also provide an argument that the components $|ε_{αμ}|$ $(α=e,μ,τ)$ must be small for the disappearance oscillation probability to be consistent with high-energy atmospheric neutrino data, which justifies our premise that these quantities are negligible.

Summary report of MINSIS workshop in Madrid

Recent developments on tau detection technologies and the construction of high intensity neutrino beams open the possibility of a high precision search for non-standard μ - τ flavour transition with neutrinos at short distances. The MINSIS - Main Injector Non-Standard Interaction Search- is a proposal under discussion to realize such precision measurement. This document contains the proceedings of the workshop which took place on 10-11 December 2009 in Madrid to discuss both the physics reach as well as the experimental requirements for this proposal.

The discovery channel at the Neutrino Factory: $ν_μ\toν_τ$ pointing to sterile neutrinos

We study the potential of a Neutrino Factory in constraining the parameter space of a scheme with one sterile neutrino separated from three active ones by an O(1) eV^2, mass-squared difference. We present approximated analytic expressions for the oscillation probabilities, showing that the greatest sensitivity to sterile neutrinos at a Neutrino Factory can be achieved using the ν_μ->ν_μand the ν_μ->ν_τoscillations. We have studied two setups: a Neutrino Factory with 50 GeV (20 GeV) stored muons, with two detectors of the Hybrid-MIND type (a magnetized ECC next to a magnetized iron calorimeter), located at L=3000, 7500 km (L=4000, 7500 km) from the source. Four channels have been used: ν_e -> ν_μ,ν_τ; ν_μ-> ν_μ,ν_τ. The relevant backgrounds, efficiencies and systematic errors have been taken into account, and we have discussed dependence of the sensitivities on the systematic errors. We have found that the 50 GeV (20 GeV) setup can constrain \sin^2 2 θ^{(4fam)}_{13} <= 7x10^{-5} (2x10^{-4}); θ_{34} <= 12 deg (14 deg); and θ_{24}<= 7.5 deg (8 deg). Our results hold for any value of Δm^2_{Sbl} >~ 0.1 eV^2. Eventually we have shown that, if a positive signal is found, the proposed setup is able to measure simultaneously θ_{34} and δ_3 with a precision of few degrees and few tens of degrees, respectively, solving the so-called "intrinsic" and "sign degeneracies". Combination of ν_μdisappearance and of the ν_μ->ν_τchannel, that will be called "the discovery channel", at the two baselines is able to measure at 99% CL a new CP-violating phase δ_3 for \sin^2 2 θ_{34} >= 0.06.

Correlations of errors in measurements of CP violation at neutrino factories

Using $Δχ^2$ which is defined by the difference of the number of events with the CP phase $δ$ and the hypothetical one with $δ=0$, we discuss correlations of errors of the CP phase and other oscillation parameters as well as the matter effect in measurements at neutrino factories. By varying the oscillation parameters and the normalization of the matter effect, we evaluated the data size required to reject a hypothesis with $δ=0$ at 3$σ$CL. The optimum muon energy and the baseline depends on the magnitude of $θ_{13}$, the background fraction, the uncertainty of the normalization of the matter effect, but in general lie in the ranges 20GeV $\lesssim E_μ\lesssim$ 50GeV, 1000km$\lesssim L\lesssim$3000km. If we assume that the uncertainty of the matter effect is as large as 20% then the optimum values may be modified to $E_μ\lesssim$ 10GeV, $L\lesssim$1000km due to the strong correlation of $δ$ and the matter effect. We show analytically that sensitivity to CP violation is lost for $E_μ\ll$ 10GeV or for $E_μ\gg$ 50GeV. We also discuss the possibility of measuring CP violation at the upgraded JHF experiment by taking all the error correlations into account, and show that it is possible to demonstrate $δ\ne0$ at 3$σ$CL for $θ_{13}\gtrsim 3^\circ$.

Summary of Working Group 1: Theory Part

I will summarize theoretical issues in Working Group 1 at Nufact'01. Although there may not be complete agreement yet on the exact optimum baseline $L$ and the muon energy $E_μ$ for measurements of the CP phase at a neutrino factory, all the works done so far indicate that the optimum set ($L$, $E_μ$) tends to be smaller than (3000km, 50GeV) if the uncertainty of the matter effect is assumed to be larger than $\pm$5% or the background fraction is much larger than $10^{-5}$.

Three Flavor Neutrino Oscillations and Application to Long Baseline Experiments

Using the result of the three flavor analysis of the old Kamiokande data, the recent Superkamiokande data of atmospheric neutrinos and the CHOOZ reactor data, it is shown that the third mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is small. It is proposed to determine the small value of $θ_{13}$ and the CP violating phase $δ$ in very long baseline experiments by measuring the appearance probability $P(ν_μ\toν_e)$ and the T violating effect $P(ν_e\toν_μ)-P(ν_μ\toν_e)$ which are enhanced by the matter effect of the Earth.

A test of the equivalence principle by long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiments

We show that a breakdown of the universality of the gravitational couplings to different neutrino flavors can be tested in long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiments. In particular we have analyzed in detail a proposed experiment at SOUDAN 2 with $ν_μ$ beams from the Fermilab Main Injector. It turns out that we can study both masses of neutrinos and such a breakdown with sensitivity to the order of $10^{-14}$ by investigating the energy spectrum of the resulting muons.
