Synchronization of the internal dynamics of optical soliton molecules

Optical soliton molecules in ultrafast lasers present striking analogies with their matter molecule counterparts, such as internal vibrations. However, the vibrations of soliton molecules are nonlinear, with frequencies that are sensitive to the system parameters, thus presenting an opportunity of control. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the synchronization of the internal vibrations of self-excited vibrating soliton molecules through a modulated optical injection. We show efficient sub-harmonic, fundamental and super-harmonic synchronization, forming a pattern of Arnold tongues with respect to the injection strength. Our observations are supported by numerical simulations.

Thermal instabilities, frequency comb formation, and temporal oscillations in Kerr microresonators

We analyze the consequences of dissipative heating in driven Kerr microresonators theoretically and numerically, using a thermal Lugiato-Lefever model. We show that thermal sensitivity modifies the stability range of continuous wave in a way that blocks direct access to broadband frequency-comb forming waveforms, and we propose a deterministic access path that bypasses the thermal instability barrier. We describe a novel thermal instability that leads to thermooptical oscillations via a Hopf bifurcation.

Topology of time-reversal invariant energy bands with adiabatic structure

We classify the topology of bands defined by the energy states of quantum systems with scale separation between slow and fast degrees of freedom, invariant under fermionic time reversal. Classical phase space transforms differently from momentum space under time reversal, and as a consequence the topology of adiabatic bands is different from that of Bloch bands. We show that bands defined over a two-dimensional phase space are classified by the Chern number, whose parity must be equal to the parity of the band rank. Even-rank bands are equivalently classified by the Kane-Mele index, an integer equal to one half the Chern number.

Resonance phenomena in the interaction of a many-photon wave packet and a qubit

We demonstrate that a highly excited quantum electromagnetic mode strongly interacting with a single qubit exhibits several distinct resonances in addition to the Bloch-Siegert resonance condition that arises in the interaction with classical radiation. The resonance phenomena are associated with non-classical effects: Collapse of Rabi oscillations, splitting of the photon wave packet, and field-qubit entanglement. The analysis is based on a semiclassical phase-space flow of 2-by-2 matrices and becomes exact when the photon number tends to infinity. The flow equations are solved perturbatively and numerically, showing that the resonant detuning of the field and qubit frequencies lie on two branches in the leading order, that further split into distinct curves in higher orders.

Semiclassics for particles with spin via a Wigner-Weyl-type calculus

We show how to relate the full quantum dynamics of a spin-1/2 particle on R^d to a classical Hamiltonian dynamics on the enlarged phase space R^d x S^2 up to errors of second order in the semiclassical parameter. This is done via an Egorov-type theorem for normal Wigner-Weyl calculus for R^d [Lei10,Fol89] combined with the Stratonovich-Weyl calculus for SU(2) [VGB89]. For a specific class of Hamiltonians, including the Rabi- and Jaynes-Cummings model, we prove an Egorov theorem for times much longer than the semiclassical time scale. We illustrate the approach for a simple model of the Stern-Gerlach experiment.

Time-energy tradeoff in unambiguous state discrimination POVM

Unambiguous non-orthogonal state discrimination has fundamental importance in quantum information and quantum cryptography. The discrimination is carried out by POVM generalized measurements. For this process, we find a tradeoff between the needed energy resources and the evolution time, and express it in terms of action-like cost inequality. We find the realization that minimizes this action-like cost and show that in this case the cost is determined by the maximal population transfer from the system to the ancilla needed for the POVM implementation.

Frequency comb injection locking of mode locked lasers

The two-frequency problem of synchronization of the pulse train of a passively mode locked soliton laser to an externally injected pulse train is solved in the weak injection regime. The source and target frequency combs are distinguished by the spacing and offset frequency mismatches. Locking diagrams map the domain in the mismatch parameter space where stable locking of the combs is possible. We analyze the dependence of the locking behavior on the relative frequency and chirp of the source and target pulses, and the conditions where the relative offset frequency has to be actively stabilized. Locked steady states are characterized by a fixed source-target time and phase shifts that map the locking domain.

Dynamical phase interferometry of cold atoms in optical lattices

We study the propagation of cold-atom wave packets in an interferometer with a Mach-Zehnder topology based on the dynamical phase of Bloch oscillation in a weakly forced optical lattice with a narrow potential barrier that functions as a cold-atom wave packet splitter. We calculate analytically the atomic wave function, and show that the expected number of atoms in the two outputs of the interferometer oscillates rapidly as a function of the angle between the potential barrier and the forcing direction with period proportional to the external potential difference across a lattice spacing divided by the lattice band energy scale. The interferometer can be used as a high precision force probe whose principle of operation is different from current interferometers based on the overall position of Bloch oscillating wave packets.

Entanglement generation by interaction with semiclassical radiation

We address a fundamental issue in quantum mechanics and quantum information theory, the generation of an entangled pair of qubits that interact solely through a third, semiclassical degree of freedom, in the framework of cavity quantum electrodynamics. We show that finite, though not maximal, entanglement is obtainable in the classical limit, at the price of a diverging effective interaction time. The optimal atomic entanglement derives from a trade-off between the atomic entanglement in a sub-wave packet and the purity of the atomic state. Decoherence by photon loss sets an upper limit on the degree of excitation of the cavity mode, beyond which the achievable entanglement decreases as the inverse mean photon number to the sixth power.

Spectral Sidebands and Multi-Pulse Formation in Passively Mode Locked Lasers

Pulse formation in passively mode locked lasers is often accompanied with dispersive waves that form of spectral sidebands due to spatial inhomogoneities in the laser cavity. Here we present an explicit calculation of the amplitude, frequency, and precise shape of the sidebands accompanying a soliton-like pulse. We then extend the study to the global steady state of mode locked laser with a variable number of pulses, and present experimental results in a mode locked fiber laser that confirm the theory. The strong correlation between the temporal width of the sidebands and the measured spacing between the pulses in multipulse operation suggests that the sidebands have an important role in the inter-pulse interaction.

Violation of smooth observable macroscopic realism in a harmonic oscillator

We study the emergence of macrorealism in a harmonic oscillator subject to consecutive measurements of a squeezed action. Since the harmonic oscillator dynamics admits a hidden trajectory formulation, the assumptions of macrorealism are violated only by the measurement process. We demonstrate a breakdown of macrorealism in a wide parameter range that is maximized in a scaling limit of extreme squeezing. A semiclassical analysis shows that macrorealism is violated even with measurements of classically smooth observables that do not resolve quantum levels. We propose an experimental test of macrorealism with entangled photons by demonstrating that local realism in a composite system implies macrorealism in a subsystem.

Non-Perturbative Zero Modes in the Kraichnan Model for Turbulent Advection

The anomalous scaling behavior of the n-th order correlation functions ${\cal F}_n$ of the Kraichnan model of turbulent passive scalar advection is believed to be dominated by the homogeneous solutions (zero-modes) of the Kraichnan equation $\hat{\cal B}_n {\cal F}_n=0$. Previous analysis found zero-modes in perturbation theory in a small parameter. We present non-perturbative analysis of the simplest (non-trivial) case of n=3 and compare the results with the perturbative predictions.
