Complete curves in the moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces and hyper-Kähler manifolds

Building on an idea of Borcherds, Katzarkov, Pantev, and Shepherd-Barron (who treated the case $e=14$), we prove that the moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces of degree $2e$ contains complete curves for all $e\geq 62$ and for some sporadic lower values of $e$ (starting at $14$). We also construct complete curves in the moduli spaces of polarized hyper-Kähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type or $\mathrm{Kum}_n$-type for all $n\ge 1$ and polarizations of various degrees and divisibilities.

Gushel-Mukai varieties with many symmetries and an explicit irrational Gushel-Mukai threefold

We construct an explicit complex smooth Fano threefold with Picard number 1, index 1, and degree 10 (also known as a Gushel-Mukai threefold) and prove that it is not rational by showing that its intermediate Jacobian has a faithful $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbf{F}_{11}) $-action. Along the way, we construct Gushel-Mukai varieties of various dimensions with rather large (finite) automorphism groups. The starting point of all these constructions is an Eisenbud-Popescu-Walter sextic with a faithful $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbf{F}_{11}) $-action discovered by the second author in 2013.

Lines on cubic hypersurfaces over finite fields

We show that smooth cubic hypersurfaces of dimension $n$ defined over a finite field ${\bf F}_q$ contain a line defined over ${\bf F}_q$ in each of the following cases: - $n=3$ and $q\ge 11$; - $n=4$ and $q\ne 3$; - $n\ge 5$. For a smooth cubic threefold $X$, the variety of lines contained in $X$ is a smooth projective surface $F(X)$ for which the Tate conjecture holds, and we obtain information about the Picard number of $F(X)$ and its 5-dimensional principally polarized Albanese variety $A(F(X))$.

Hilbert squares of K3 surfaces and Debarre-Voisin varieties

The Debarre-Voisin hyperkähler fourfolds are built from alternating $3$-forms on a $10$-dimensional complex vector space, which we call trivectors. They are analogous to the Beauville-Donagi fourfolds associated with cubic fourfolds. In this article, we study several trivectors whose associated Debarre-Voisin variety is degenerate, in the sense that it is either reducible or has excessive dimension. We show that the Debarre-Voisin varieties specialize, along general $1$-parameter degenerations to these trivectors, to varieties isomorphic or birationally isomorphic to the Hilbert square of a K3 surface.

Special prime Fano fourfolds of degree 10 and index 2

Mukai proved that most prime Fano fourfolds of degree 10 and index 2 are contained in a Grassmannian G(2,5). They are all unirational and some are rational, as remarked by Roth in 1949. We show that their middle cohomology is of K3 type and that their period map is dominant, with smooth 4-dimensional fibers, onto a 20-dimensional bounded symmetric period domain of type IV. Following Hassett, we say that such a fourfold is special if it contains a surface whose cohomology class does not come from the Grassmannian G(2,5). Special fourfolds correspond to a countable union of hypersurfaces in the period domain, labelled by a positive integer d, the discriminant. We describe special fourfolds for some low values of d. We also characterize those integers d for which special fourfolds do exist.

On nodal prime Fano threefolds of degree 10

We study the geometry and the period map of nodal complex prime Fano threefolds with index 1 and degree 10. We show that these threefolds are birationally isomorphic to Verra solids (hypersurfaces of bidegree $(2,2)$ in $ ¶^2\times ¶^2$). Using Verra's results on the period map for these solids and on the Prym map for double étale covers of plane sextic curves, we prove that the fiber of the period map for our nodal threefolds is birationally the union of two surfaces, for which we give several descriptions. This result is the analog in the nodal case of a result obtained in arXiv:0812.3670 for the smooth case.

Théorèmes De Connexité Pour Les Produits D'Espaces Projectifs et Les Grassmanniennes

Let $G$ be the Grassmannian $G(d,n)$, let $X$ and $Y$ be complete irreducible varieties, and let $X\rightarrow G$ and $Y\rightarrow G$ be morphisms. Hansen proved that $X \times_G Y$ is connected when $codim f(X) + codim g(Y) < n$. We show that the conclusion holds under the often weaker hypothesis $f(X).g(Y).T\ne 0$, where $T$ is the class of $G(d,n-1)$ in $G$. We prove similar results when $G$ is a product of projective spaces. In particular, if $D$ is an irreducible subvariety of $P^n\times P^n$ of dimension $n$ which dominates both factors, and if $X$ is complete irreducible, with a morphism $f: X \rightarrow P^n\times P^n$ such that $dim f(X) >n$, $f^{-1}(D)$ is connected. This extends the classical Fulton-Hansen connectedness theorem. These results illustrate Fulton and Lazarsfeld's idea that connectedness should be a numerical property.
